I hope yall read this because it's important to point out that America was barely 10 years old when the conversation about abolition began. Not even 100 hundred years in, we fought a brutal civil war to end the practice of slavery. We were barely an established country on the world stage and we were already acting on the principles of our founding. So the argument that America is founded on racism is just so noncontextual as to warrant its complete disregard.
Great work! Yall earned that follow.

America is founded on racism ??? Maybe. But,boy did it really screw over it's black citizens-BLACK-WALLSTREET. An entire black town burned to the ground,300 black citizens murdered by white citizens, the US government doesn't do anything ??? The Bloody Summer of 1918,several other black towns get the same treatment as Blackwallstreet and the government does nothing again ??? 300 recorded incidents in US history and the same results.Oh and I forgot Blackwallstreet was bombed from the air by our own military.I could go on and on,but, you get the picture-I HOPE. Lots of evil and brutal things were done to black citizens after slavery, yet we tell them to forget about all this.Stop being victums-RIGHT ??? Let's pretend racism doesn't exist in america any more, yet it does, doesn't it ??? You can't fix a problem if you don't admit it exists.

I agree with you, except slavery wasn’t the end of racism in this country. We still had some things that systematically hurt people because of their skin color. Although I’m not an advocate for CRT, I’m not going to ignore everything else because a majority of people knew the practices of that day were wrong.

      @SquirtlePower809 7 місяців тому

@jamaalmillen respectfully, I think you are missing the EXACT point Vivek and these young men are trying to make. NO SANE PERSON is claiming that racism is just poof gone! Mainly because that is IMPOSSIBLE! It will never ever happen because of what Vivek pointed out-- humans are deeply flawed creatures. There is no way we are going to get every human on earth to stop being racist. Not remotely a reasonable goal or thought. HOWEVER, America has been a country that has UNIQUELY addressed the issues of slavery, racism, sexism, and inequality in general! You absolutely cannot name another country that has openly struggled and fought with these issues and made such INCREDIBLE strides through law, education, media, culture, etc. to dismantle racism. Why do we never give ourselves credit for that?? It was the REST of the world that followed our example of pursuing equal treatment of all citizens. In fact, to this very day there are STILL millions of slaves in Africa and other regions. So, what frustrates me is this-- racism/inequality has got SHYT to do with being white or being American. Loooooooong before we came into existence the ancient societies were practicing slavery, racism, sexism, classism, etc. Because HUMANS have a problem with power, control, money, and "Us vs them" mentality. And yet, along comes this brand new country that DEFINES at its heart the concept of pursuing equality. That is baked in from the start. And it is that VERY brilliant and Godly principle that allowed for this fledgling nation to be the FIRST to formally and legally abolish slavery--a practice that has been normalized and accepted as an economic structure since the dawn of civilization. So while other nations had been committing the ATROCIOUS of slavery for thousands and thousands of years, America is able to recognize its evil in almost a blink of an eye. Not only that, we fight a DEADLY and tragic war to ensure it is ended. Why is that not recognized for how truly magnificent and miraculous it is?? Instead, we are screamed at every way we turn that we are a RACIST EVIL COUNTRY! And then, we can talk about all the decades that followed, from Jim Crow to Civil Rights movement, and we can map that CONTINUAL fight for MORE equality, better treatment, less racism, etc. We CONTINUED the good fight and CONTINUED to improve! And yet we are so often told that we are still a trash racist society??!! You mean to tell me there is no difference between how blacks were treated in 1910 vs 2024?? REALLY? YOU SURE?? It is just so damn disappointing to see the level of self-hatred we have produced in America. The way the left has REALLY used Race as a tool to agitate and aggravate the black community in order to keep them under Democrat control-- it's sickening. Truly sickening. And now we have arrived at a place and time in society where we are no longer working together like we used to and now it is PERFECTLY ACCEPTABLE to say the most foul, violent, hateful things against white people. That still baffles me. And the liberals have brainwashed people into believing that "it isn't racist if you say it about white people" and they actually encourage it. We have witnessed a meteoric rise in hate crimes against white people, totally unprovoked, because of this type of mindrot. So many black people today TRULY BELIEVE that all the white folks are like secretly in cahoots and we are linked together and we are all rich and happy and have no problems and we sit around thinking up ways to destroy black people. It's madness. It is evil propaganda at it's finest and most dangerous. I think back 15, 20 years ago when your average and reasonable citizen would absolutely acknowledge that racism still exists and we can always do better, BUT they would also acknowledge just how far we have come and that in a majority sense America is not racist anymore. People were TRULY healing and coming together in America. And then the rise of wokeism decided it was going to completely and utterly burn all of that progress down. And it has GOT to make you stop and think....why? Why would they WANT to stop black and white folks from being really at peace and united? I know the answer, do you?
Anyhow, yeah of course we can sit and talk about the after effects of slavery and how that has impacted generational wealth and so on and so forth. No one (except truly Racist and crazy people) is denying that, in fact those are the kinds of convos we were having in the 90s and early 2000s. But it has changed. And it's not about that anymore. And I believe if you look deeply and with a sharp awareness and be brutally honest with yourself- you would agree. It's no longer about "working together to continue improving". The new mantra is "whyte people are evil. They have always been evil. They are born evil. And black people are superior and we need to take over". Now, someone tell me how that is helpful AND how this is ANY different than what the old timey plantation owner racists were doing? Sadly, this aligns with a POWERFUL quote from MLK (I believe, need to check) when he said that one day when Black people are treated equal or get some semblance of power that they wouldn't turn around and seek vengeance and retribution. And that's 💯 what is goin on right now. Of course I don't mean literally every black person, but there definitely is a majority loud voice especially those in media, entertainment, and social media as well as ALL of the whyte liberals.
However, I have been very encouraged to see so many black folks move over to the conservative side! It is happening far more than the liberal/dems realize lol and it does give me hope. It has just gone way too far and I'm hearing more and more and more black folks say "naw, hold up, this isn't right!"

But just like how it is now, if you spoke up against it, you were socially and financially outcast. Even attacked and actively targeted. There's a few major slave owners that had private diaries and journals where they expressed their abhorrence with the whole system and bought up slaves to potentially give them better than what they had and took as much care of them as they socially could while pretending to tow the line. Dark days then, and it seems we are still in the throes of those dark times.

Pretty much everyone has someone else to blame for their woes. The right does it just as much - blaming Affirmative Action, blaming welfare, blaming immigration, blaming LGBT, blaming anyone but themselves for their failings. No one wants to look in the mirror and take responsibility for the decisions they have made. It’s not a uniquely American issue, either. Muslims in the Middle East blame Jews and Americans. Russians blame Europe. Hitler blamed the Jews. Indians blame England and Pakistan. It’s been going on like this forever. In America, if you’re Black, it’s slavery.

the problem is that they don't teach history in this country and Vivek should stay out of the conversation, it's not what he said that showed his ignorance but what he didn't say. the History of this country is soiled in blood which is why they don't teach it. Did you know that the so called Black people are actually indeginious to these lands? probably not because they went through great trouble to keep you from knowing it. the Indians you see today are colonized indians the real indians were what you call colored you see they called them that when they stole their identity. Holly wood made images showing you a different reality and it's in your subconsious right now. The Atlantic slave trade was different because it wasn't all about slavery. these people lost their Language/History/Culture and Customs, they pledge alligance to the flag of their oppressor as well as bow down to his image, they have no political representation or equal protection under the Law and when they say anything they are treated like spoiled children but when morons like Vivek runs his mouth he seems patriotic huh.

I could see and feel this country had gotten to a point that we're all people under one flag. And that people were to be judged on character alone! Than Obama came along, and the left decided it was beneficial to divide us on race, gender, religion, and anything else they can use. It has been hard to stand by and watch when I know my myself as a white person could care less about someone's color. You guys are AMAZING and should be commended for what your doing!!! I know that the Slave trade was started by sub-Saharan African kings and the ottoman (middle eastern) empire; they enslaved African-Americans and then went to the Scottish isles and took everyone there as slaves as well.
Scottish people are white conveniently we forget that. Let it sink in.

Charlemagne needs to travel more, talk to immigrants more and read more, but also, I'm 60, and I've learned so much as I've gotten older. My friend who moved here from Kenya, Africa, in the 1980s, she told me a few decades ago that when she goes back to visit Africa, Kenyans are confused as to why black Americans complain about slavery because they (most Africans) are jealous or envious of anyone who ended up in America and today would sell an eye or a lung for the opportunity to immigrate and recieve the paid passage to do so. They all wish their ancestors had come to America as slaves because unless you were super wealthy back then life was brutally hard compared to today. She then told me that many Irish came to America as slaves and eventually gained their freedoms when they got older and they don't complain about the slavery. I was so embarrassed. I had no idea that we had Irish slaves in America. Yes, in some cases it was different than African slaves because they volunteered to come here and be held in slavery but many did not volunteer, they found themselves in prison and were forced here and forced into slavery. I had not learned any of this in school. Fast forward to 2023, and I'm going through my DNA ancestors through ancestry.com, and I find the first of 3 of my relatives that were indentured from Ireland. One of my distant cousins even has the slave contract my many times back great grandfather signed. They had nothing in Ireland and came to America and agreed to slavery in hopes that their children would be given an opportunity to make a better life for themselves in the future.
My friend from Africa, my two college professor friends from Jamaica and my husband from Colombia. South America, if you ask any of them if they would would like to go back to the countries they came from and live they all say no. They say they love their countries but have been spoiled by America.

My issue is that people just bring up slavery and then act like there wasn't a whole other part after slavery that black people had to deal and fight with for years after till 1900's even 2000's. Jim crow, segregation, lynching us, burning our houses, businesses, properties (we had a black wall street in New york until they burned that down) or Tulsa town they burned) unfair policing and jailing, targeting our gangs that were built off of fighting cops/corruption happening to us, war on drugs or putting guns in neighborhoods, killing/targeting our leaders, unfair rates when getting loans. Slavery just didn't end things for black people and it was happily ever after like some people in these comments are saying. "Oh man slavery ended pretty quick though from when the country was founded" ok and what about all the years after it. Incorporated us with some people who don't even look at us like human beings or equals and we got the aftermath of slavery that alot of these ppl just want to skim over

Forgive me but I don’t know what parts of the constitution and bill of rights is based on race. What special considerations do black peoples need? Slavery is a regrettable history. Thank God it’s no more in our country. I nonetheless agree with Vivek. If black people want to ignore historical facts by destroying statues and trying to make slave owners irrelevant aren’t they in a way minimizing their ancestors’ contributions and sacrifices made to lay the foundation for the country that we work so hard to improve today? Thanks for the insight. Peace.

The only people who want to keep those statues in the first place are lost causers. Would you tolerate a statue of someone who enslaved your family in your home city for everyone to see?

As someone who is a historian, we definitely talk about all of this in history class - if you don't remember hearing it, you weren't paying attention. Folks saying "we don't talk about this" - especially someone who is a Republican like Vivek, the very party trying to pull funding out of education - is WILD to me.

I did the math recently and it turns out that slavery was outlawed fairly quickly from the founding of the United States. The federal government was founded in 1789 and slavery was federally abolished in 1865.
Obviously, there was slavery in colonies prior, but there was no federal authority to abolish it until the federal government was established.

More than a handful bro. In 1830, there were 3,775 black (including mixed-race) slaveholders in the South who owned a total of 12,760 slaves, which was a small percentage of a total of over two million slaves then held in the South. 80% of the black slaveholders were located in Louisiana, South Carolina, Virginia and Maryland.

My ancestor to America was an indentured servant age 10. Snatched off the streets in London and thrown on a ship for service in America. He escaped during the Revolutionary War and joined the military as a drummer boy. We are white. Also, don't forget that the Irish were also sold on the auction block here in America.
