1:40. In our defense, women's dating fashions can be very complex and somewhat daunting. Men's, by comparison, is virtually idiot-proof. When you hear that a man "fussed" before a date, that means that he shaved. He PROBABLY showered. Probably. If he's going all out, he wears a suit. Likely the same suit he wore the last time he went "all out". :D
Setting aside little details that women take care of before a big date: hair, nails, shaving, waxing, makeup, a woman can't even be seen in the same nice outfit twice. Not at the same place or with the same man accessorising her look. You just KNOW some catty bitch will talk about her if she does! And I wouldn't put it past the man to unfavourably take note that she rewore a previous outfit. The outfit also includes matching shoes, jewelry, and a clutch for keys, ID, money, cell, etc., because haute couture doesn't seem to think that women need pockets. Or much in the way of material.
To that last point, regarding a lack of material and the joke, (Very funny, but nevertheless.), that Mr. Porter is making here, I can easily see why the woman might ask if she needs a wrap or some sort of jacket. Men's fashions tend to cover the body, a full suit, for example. Women's fashions-particularly evening wear-not so much. The fancier, more expensive it is, the less there is of it, seemingly. I wear a strappy little black evening dress and my legs, arms, shoulders and a good bit of "the girls" are not covered.
Yes, it was 118 degrees at 4p.m. but it's 7 now and while the sun has set, air conditioners are likely still going. Will it be cold where we are going? That's the thing. If our date is entirely outside, NO, I don't NEED a jacket in that situation, although I'd probably still want some sort of a coverup to avoid rude stares while in public. But if we are going to be inside, it might get chilly for me. Especially, if we are just sitting; at dinner, at a recital, an opera, a play, etc.
Personally, I'm not asking the man if he thinks I will need a jacket. He doesn't know anything. Clearly, Mr. Porter's lady friend was just trying to make conversation, to be polite, and was unaware that she was dealing with a lunatic. A funny lunatic, but a lunatic just the same. If I'm wearing something like the strappy black dress, I'll wear or bring along a little Bolero Jacket that covers the shoulders, parts of the arms and enough of the chest to reduce the chances that I am flashing my highbeams at those unprepared for their magnificence. Even a simple silk wrap will keep off the chill without being too warm if we are outside and serve to cover the girls when appropriate.
Again, my apologies for the over-long comment but I feel that ladies need to protect our own and though Mr. Porter IS funny, in his own intense way, and though the joke itself was also funny, I myself have been in this situation of needing a jacket of some sort when clearly the weather didn't seem to call for one and a rebuttal was required!
What the ACTUAL FUCK. Stay away from all comedy; you do not belong here.
