I know this sounds crazy, but I truly love the way this game looks. The style is really nice. I’d have someone make all the assets for my games to look like this.
It’s difficult to point out how revolutionary this was, since it did so much different from other fighting games. Semi-realistic martial arts in a limited area, with a focus on combinations and even the ability to hit grounded opponents. This simply wasn’t done before because you needed polygons to do it. Granted everyone here looks like Lego men and the jumps indicate they’re fighting on the moon, but it’s revolutionary.
It's significance to the industry isn't from it's mechanics as a game, but rather from the advancement in 3D graphics and technology. This game came out in 1993, and it was a pretty strong leap ahead in graphics, and the gameplay was smooth and functional (for the time), and the visuals were appealing compared to 3D graphics of the time.
Everything you described as a negative was exactly what made it so awesome - we knew what REAL fighting looked like because there was so much of it in school and on the street, we wanted something that felt like a GAME not super real reality which sucked
@@charthers8903 In real fights, anyone who isn't on drugs is afraid to invest too much in a punch thrown at the face in case they hit the forehead, or a wall and destroy their hand in the process.
I've always loved VF and I feel the flat shaded, low poly look of the original has aged the best. I really like that PS2 version of VF4 which uses the VF1 aesthetic.
First saw this in a movie theater when they used to have like two arcade machines in the theater I played it and didn’t even want to watch the movie I came to see lol my parents had to drag me away from that arcade machine
Before modern computers, there was this first attempt and everyone still loves these games no one's ever heard of Geo: anyone else miss quarter machines
I sometimes play the PC version from time to time , still fun and holds up well. I wish SEGA would re-release the windows 95 version for windows 10/11 steam with updated graphics on xbox controller support
This series truly came a LONG way!

You do not need polygons to have combinations and hit grounded opponent in 2D games.

Trying to figure out how I would prerender sprite and do all of this on the Sega Master System. No DMA nor special hardware.

I think it's emulated with the program MAME

used to play this game all the time at Chuck E Cheeses, Kage was the character I always played
I believe I saw footage for this game before Tekken. It was amazing to get your hands on a 3D fighting game for the first time.
Excellent! Thanks for this vid! 👍🙏
I think I was a HS Sophomore when this came out. Folks that saw it then knew how revolutionary it was :)
In "MAME" Emulator On Mobile The "Virtua Fighter" Had Errors In The "Arcade Version" So I Download "Virtua Fighter" In "Sega 32x" And "Sega Saturn"
Before modern computers, there was this first attempt and everyone still loves these games no one's ever heard of

My first experience in seeing this game for the first time was the small clip in Man of the house when Ben is at the arcade 😆

So there was no ending? Was the metal dude a boss? I only played this a handful of times back in the day and I sucked
Why do I see bits of slowdown , emulation or capture card issue ?
Guest starring the EPA. (1:00)

That was really freaking close!
Can anyone tell me the appeal of the fighting game genre?
For me the best in the series was VF2 for Windows.
@spearPYN agree
What emulator are you using for this? Guessing its mame but which revision?
This looks like real arcade hardware.
Joel as Akira Yuki
Joel Perez martial arts virtua fighter 6

you gotta vary those finishing moves for the montage at the end or you suck.
This isn't the Arcade version its some shitty emulator, I can tell because the Arcade never had this terrible slow down.
