      @@kispahan252 I'm an American, so I've mostly tested Samsung folds and owned a flip and two folds. Recently, I had work in Dubai and decided to check out some of the Huawei phones. And if I'm being honest, the build quality felt terrible in person vs. the Samsungs I've used. Even the newer, fancier "high-end" folds felt like crappy cheap knockoffs with creaking hinges and all. It just feels like many of these Chinese phones buy up a bunch of the brand new best-on-paper components and throw them together without polish so they can hit the numbers on their website. "GaN/SiC powered this," "100-megapixel sensor," "super duper fast charging," random things like that where it is technically the "Best" but in the end is meaningless if not designed around or tested (you can always make a bad or just plain meh chipset on a new technology *cough* kirin 9000s *cough* every single exynos ever). I use a lot of Samsung as they are the solid middle ground between the over-tested slow to the new iPhones and the experimental new tech crappily thrown together Chinese Android flagship.

I've heard reviewers say they use the front display of their folding phones 90% of the time. That says enough. For me the odd aspect ratio of the Samsung fold 5’s outer screen is a small thing. If I’ll own a folding phone, I’ll use the inner screen most of the time, and use the outer screen for quick reading of notifications. I like big screens.
      But I know some like a familiar aspect ratio for the outer screen, like Dave. I can imagine someone in a very crowded train. He doesn’t wanna fold it open. He wants to use the outer screen during his 1-hour trip.

      @Accuaro 8 місяців тому +15

      I mean, yeah. Albeit it gets fatiguing very fast though. Also holding it with one hand is pretty tricky unless you have a case, and then it just gets thicker and adds to the already heavy phone. The Honor fold doesn't have a huge front display either, it's a tiny bit wider so you still get a mostly portrait display once unfolded.
      As a Z Fold user, this Chinese phone is superior in hardware but not in software However it is undeniably better. I don't care about a built in s pen. I want it lighter and thinner. Having a front display that's a bit wider is a bonus on top.

      I think the compromise Samsung could do is to make the cover display bit wider, but not too wide that it will be harder to use one-handed. So not exactly like the 21:9 we used to, but something between the normal phone wideness and the current Fold 5 wide.

    The reason the outer displays on folding phones are made narrower is to make the inside screen less awkward to use. At some point it turns into a square, and at that point the dimensions are too awkward for media consumption. While watching videos for example you might actually get a bigger viewing area on the outside compared to the inside with black bars.

      Making the outer screen wider won't make an impact on media consumption on the inner screen; the videos will still be same size on inner screen if viewing in landscape, and the only difference is that the black bars on top or bottom would increase. But other than media consumption, it would provide more space to view content such as web browsing, ebook reading, multitasking with multiple apps.
      Wider outer screen would also have a positive impact on videos and images on outer screen as it would make them bigger. If you look at the Z Fold, the narrow outer screen makes viewing videos/images in landscape tiny with wider black bars on either side, whilst viewing them in portrait in outer screen makes them even smaller. If it were on a wider outer screen, videos/images would be bigger in both viewing angles, and with more space to view words and stuff.
      The only benefit I see to narrower outer screen is for people that prefer one-hand/compact use, and I guess more battery life since there is less screen. But since the Z Fold has less battery size than the other foldables, smaller outer screen wouldn't be a benefit to battery life compared to the rest.

    After testing out the Galaxy Fold 5 I actually kind of liked the smaller outside screen after thinking it would be pretty bad when first seeing it. It makes one hand usage alot easier. If you need the full experience you can fold it and use the big screen. Actually a better usability experience than i thought. But because of the slim outer screen, the inner screen has also a strange aspect ratio. You don't really have a tablet like ratio that's good for vertical video watching/media consumption, there a big edges because of it. Otherwise it's a nice screen..
    What bothers me more is the little increment from the Fold 4 to the Fold 5 Samsung did even tho other smartphone makers caught up. The Fold 5 still has a bad/small battery compared to others and the cameras are still a huge downgrade compared to the S-Series or other Foldables. They just chilled because they are still the marked leaders (especially in EU/America), that was kind of lazy (or they are really doing something major for the Fold 6, let's see).

      Absolutely not, the Samsung Fold's have a horrendous aspect ratio on both the outer and inner screen. People are going to use their phones mainly folded, and with the Samsung aspect ratio it makes it very difficult to use the outer screen, anyone with medium-large hands will have a difficult time typing. Not to mention games and apps will be ultra narrow and ruins the experience. To me a foldable is supposed to be a 2 in 1 device, having the inner screen available to use when you want, not NEEDING to use the inner screen because the outer screen is unusable. Sure, it feels good in the hands since it's easy to hold, but that's it. I want a usable device, not an ultra comfortable device. Also when you unfold a wider device, you have a nice widescreen when unfolded, perfect for media consumption and games...which is what it is meant for! I don't want to unfold my phone and STILL have a narrow but tall screen, I don't need that. Now, I get this is all my personal opinion, but damn. Pixel Fold aspect ratios all the way. Currently that would be the only foldable i'd consider, although I won't be jumping to Android any time soon.

Also, none of the chinese foldables are using this narrower screen, only Samsung is adopting it. Even Google with the Pixel Fold is wider and people are praising it for better use than Samsung's narrow outer screen. It isn't only tech reviewers complaining about the narrower screen, a lot of phone users and even Z Fold users (including myself) don't like the narrow outer screen. I guess if you prefer a compact phone, then yes, it would be perfect for you. But a lot of us want a regular wider outer screen phone that transitions into a mini tablet. We get the choice of a regular size phone and a tablet in one, whilst the Z Fold is like a compact phone that becomes a mini tablet. Many of us don't like that and the outer screen feels like a downgrade/sacrifice.
      This could also be the case; that Samsung has continued with the philosophy of their Z Flip line, where the outer screen is only for quick integrations, and the inner screen is the focus. I don't like that; I want a regular 2 in 1, a regular sized outer screen like a regular phone, and a mini tablet. A choice to have either screen as the main focus. No sacrifices.
      With the Honor Magic V2, they've gotten it to the point where not only is it the size of a regular phone, but also even as light and thin as one. An upgrade which the latest Z Fold hasn't reached yet.

But inside they are bigger than the most obese slab phones today. I agree that the honor magic v2 looks great, but it's not the only form factor that might work - look at the Oppn Find N2 which was on your table - it's China only which is a shame as it's so compact! Compact is good!! And so are big screens - hence the Z Fold 5. I think Samsung got the design badly wrong from the start. From the front display (redesign finally Fold 6?), to the hinge (Fold 5 has now gone with the consensus), the gap (Fold 5 finally ditched that years after others). And Samsung just couldn’t admit they mucked everything up in one go, so are slowly copying rivals that seem to know a lot more about designs and tech innovation. Samsung should do what they do best, copy and use their large economies of scale and cash reserves to improve on what other businesses make. Even the Flip, it has taken five iterations to get a sensible front display that even I said was an obvious requirement for flip designs (see RAZR) from the launch of the OG Flip.
      Samsung is not good at new innovation and that is probably why the influencers that said foldable’s would take over quickly are now questioning themselves as to how they got that so wrong? I say blame Samsung.

      @@joshjuarez7777 More expensive, heavier, thicker, fragile and less battery life, worse camera, no full water/dust protection than regular slab phones. Also, still many apps aren't fully optimised for inner screen of foldables (probably because foldables aren't as popular/widely used by mainstream yet). Maybe a couple years more and it will be up to par.

      @@andrewbui1351 Expensive is not an inconvenience as it doesnt describe a feature of the design. The only competitor to the camera is from Samsungs own lineup which is the S23+ where the camera is the distinguishing factor, the Fold 4 cameras spec up against all flagships and are indistinguishably as good or better. This is also not an argument. Apps not being optimized for an added feature is not an inconvenience as you can use 99% of app that are not optimized on the front screen. So where's the inconvenience? Battery life and dust proof are the only legitimate arguments you may have but even then, those are not daily inconveniences as most people are not exposing their phones to water regularly and battery life on the Fold 4 is not great it is roughly 10-15% less than other slab phones that don't have to power 2 screens, which again is the an ADDED feature that most phones DO NOT HAVE. Those are minor trade offs for the ability to combine a tablet and a phone into one device. Can Samsung improve? Definitely, I'd like to see them come closer to the Honor Magic V2 in form factor but from a iterative standpoint, Samsung has nailed most of the issues with foldables and most of the complaints I hear are from people who are simply not comfortable with change. I understand that, but I will not validate their weak arguments and they should also know that their arguments are not valid in relative terms.

    Honor are announcing the global release of the Honor Magic V2 tomorrow. They're also announcing a budget foldable to bring that price of entry for alot of us that have always wanted to purchase a folding phone but its too expensive for. Well played Honor. You're bringing big competition into the market (mainly Samsung) and thats good for all of us! 👌

    The inside screen will not be usable if Samsung sticks with regular form factor. Z fold opens to a portrait orientation, while others open to a landscape orientation, which leaves a lot of black bars when running apps on the inside screen.

    idk why everyone is hating on the folds lol. I waited for years for a worthy foldable... purchased the Fold 3 on release day for a hug premium of course.. but it is freaking incredible. No case/additional protectors, many hard drops, the thing has been perfect for me (though wouldn't be worth the investment for casual users). I simply replaced the original inner screen protector with a superior 3rd party one from whichever white/blue stone-something brand after about a year... but I love my 3, and am impressed with how they iterated the 4 (and probably 5, though I haven't seen many breakdowns). Take or leave my 2c... but if you care about tech... are you actually using an apple product?? O.o

      What do you need the big inner screen for in a phone doe? I also don’t like that the folding phones have a plastic inner screen that is much more backwards then any apple device on the market. Folding phone is going to remain a niche market just like tablet’s because people don’t need all that screen real estate and the price is just not justifiable and it can never replace a laptop or a computer anyway

      @figbyfig5592 8 місяців тому

      @nishantrajani7372 big screens arent needed but its very nice to have its a luxury and youre paying for that when you buy a fold and the inner screen is very nice and the gaming experience is like no other and watching videos and especially for having full desktop experience when web browsing

    • @Zanshin001
      @Zanshin001 8 місяців тому

      Going to respond... but you've generalized and are somewhat incorrect. As I said, paying the premium "for a phone" isn't worth it for your average Joe. I think you need to enjoy and utilize tech to spend over 2 thousand (or be an unfeeling Apple customer -just because of how anti consumer they are lol). But yes, unlike Linus, I unfold to use the big screen for media consumption and general usage, rarely checking alarm/notis or responding to something on outside screen. Gaming, media, browsing, using the S pen at work for demonstrations and design... unfolding for a bigger screen leaves non-foldables in the dust. Indeed, I perform many actions on the device that would have required me to use a PC. I use a large midATX desktop for primary work and gaming, and have a work laptop and lots of antique laptops. I'm waiting for arrow lake next year, and when I purchase my own tech I prefer to use a stationary desktop and an on-hand mobile device. I wish society didn't largley demand phone numbers/lines instead of wifi data communications, as a mobile tablet or laptop can have better value thermals or band for buck atm... anyway... years later nothing beats a Windows desktop and a foldable phone for me. @@nishantrajani7372

      @@figbyfig5592 I tried it for a week but the gaming with that aspect ratio specially for mobile games is not nice trying to reach all the on screen controls and as for the pc usage I generally need pc for input methods and without mice and keyboard I wouldn’t enjoy the bigger screen. As i said like tablets only a few people will every use them and it comes with downgrade of durability and plastic more easily scratch-able screen.

    There’s always been too many trade offs to get a foldable. But once it essentially looks and feels like a regular phone, but it opens up. And you’re not trading off battery life, screen resolution, camera quality, etc. that will be great. And it looks like were almost there
