The one thing that I really like from Oikawa's backstory is what he says towards the end after receiving the award. He gets the best setter award but he says "This award is proof that our spikers gave it all they had". To me this says a lot about his mental growth and attitude. Thanks to conversation with Iwa chan, I think Oikawa wholeheartedly started putting Team first attitude.

Many people miss that when Oikawa flips out at Kageyama, he envisions Kageyama with red eyes, but ALSO Ushiwaka from Shiratorizawa with red eyes. He's upset with Kageyama, but what's really freaking him out is the idea that he feels he can't stay on the court playing volleyball because of people who are blessed with god given genius level abilities. He doesn't really want to hit Kageyama; He's having a panic attack and is irrationally trying to defend himself against what he feels is a threat to his existence. You can tell his body acted before his head, because he's surprised when Iwazumi grabs his arm. He didn't know he was about to hit Kageyama. As for Kageyama don't worry, he's completely oblivious to what was about to happen, which is why he approaches Oikawa for tips again. Oikawa sticking his tongue out at Kageyama is yes, immature, but to us as an audience, it's actually a sign of growth because he's no longer panicking and is threatened by Kageyama's desire to get even better at Volleyball. This is why I like Oikawa as a character, he has interesting layers and grows

When you think of it, Oikawa don't get physical with people, like some other characters. Even when Iwaizumi punches him, he doesn't punch back. He uses more playful, funny ways to razz them up. You can really see how out of sorts and out of character he is here if you think of that. And he is terrified, when Iea stops him.

This is just what I think but would like to know if Adam agrees. That the coach at kitagawa (junior high) was a bad coach. When Oikawa was there it seems he didn't have a good time under that coach, the coach didn't even try to talk to kageyama and Oikawa. And even after Oikawa left which just in a year kageyama didn't have a good relation with his teammates and coach didn't even bother questioning the problem and finding a middle ground but now in High school with good coaches Oikawa has a good relation with his juniors and kageyama has a good relation with his seniors.

I would really love to hear Sarah and Adam’s thoughts about the Kitagawa Daiichi Junior High’s coaching staff! I also want you to remember what Kageyama was thinking about when he is on the bench in this match, I don’t remember exact words but something about how when he was benched before in middle school he was thinking that he was no longer useful and that he could be replaced, rather than cool down, observing and correcting like Ukai tells him to do. If that is the message both Oikawa and Kageyama got, it had to come from somewhere back then. Btw, looking into Oikawa’s character and story, doesn’t mean that we are taking his side “against” Karasuno or Kageyama. For me, it is just the pleasure of seeing interesting characters and evolution and I can appreciate both, considering they have a lot in common.

Exactly. As you said, this episode makes you realize that Oikawa's cockiness is mostly a front, and thus the resulting view people get of him thinking he's better than everyone else is not really accurate. In reality, he's very insecure, due partly to high personal expectations/goals and the seemingly unconquerable Ushijima and exponentially improving Kageyama closing him in on both sides. How this affects him as a player and drives his growth as a character is one of the best parts of the show, I think.

  • @karavalgardson3071

The comment section is doing a good job of demonstrating the complexity and polarity concerning the character of Oikawa, lol. I think the fact that people have such varying, yet still well-supported and valid, opinions of him and his actions, development, motivations, etc. is proof of how well-written a character he is.
In my opinion, Haikyu excels as a show not because of the accuracy and passion behind the volleyball depictions, or the pure hype it manages to build up (although those are huge parts as well of course), but because of the character writing; Oikawa is one of the prime examples of that. He might be my favourite character in the show, actually, due to the potential for character analysis and study of his psychology. That is different than liking him on a personal level - in real life, I would probably hate his personality lol. He can be rude, pompous, and childish at times. But I can understand, and empathize with, his motivations and fears and how they drive his actions and shape his personality. Ahead of him is the insurmountable Shiratorizawa, and behind him is Kageyama’s encroaching genius; he is confronted with the idea that, despite everything he tries to do or how hard he works, even the upper limits of his ability might never be enough.
After his breakdown and Iwaizumi’s help, he seems to counterbalance this fear with the idea that it’s not just him - there are six players on the court, and he will be the best setter by bringing them all up to their full potential, thereby achieving both team and individual success. When he wins the Best Setter award, he says that of course he is happy to receive it, but also says it is proof their spikers gave it their all. He is largely ego-driven, sure, but does genuinely understand and appreciate the contributions of the whole team.

23:37 I saw something like "Oikawa tried to hit Kageyama~" in the comments, so I'd like to add a little bit. I think the exact scene is that he is trying to brush Kageyama off with a big sideways motion of the back of his hand, as if to shake off a phantom. Well, I think he would have ended up hitting him if there had been contact because of the momentum, but I'm not sure if he was attempting to touch him or not. I thought it was a little different from "trying to hit him."
    23:50 "Don't come... Don't come..." "Don't come over here!"
By the way, these words are the voice in Oikawa's mind. He didn't say them out loud. (Confirmed by the manga.)
Looking at the situation objectively at this time, Oikawa was silently and unconsciously trying to brush Kageyama off and was stopped by Iwaizumi. So, Kageyama did not know what was going on. It was hard to understand in the anime, so I hope this helps.

With all the love and respect in my heart; NOT how mental health works! Especially mental health of teenagers! Yeah, it's obvs not Kageyama's fault! Oikawa still needed help at that moment and it's normal that without it his mental health deteriorated (because of stress, pressure and insecurities) to the point of having a panic attack (as others already pointed out, he wasn't in his right mind when he tried to hit Kagyama, was shocked with himself after Iwaizumi stopped him and apologized right after). Not having the natural ability to deal with those things at that age is not his fault. He was basically let down by the adults in his life (cough cough his coach).

I also acknowledge that this is a very common thing that most people face in their life in one way or another. Something I have personally dealt with, albeit maybe not to the same levels. We all make decisions that are not great and make mistakes in different situations, however I believe you are also always responsible for your own actions. You don't bury a kid for his one off actions, and I agree ideally you have an adult (coach) step in and guide and mentor in this positions. But it's still not a great reaction on his part and he definitely needs to learn and grow from the situation. The key is do you learn from the situations where you are not happy with your decisions or do you keep making the same mistakes. I'm the only person that doesn't know lol.

I feel like Oikawa is a misunderstood character, yet he is probably the most relatable character in the entire show. Oikawa aspires to be great at playing volleyball, so he works unbelievably hard as an individual with his spartan jump serve routines and as a team player, getting 100% out of his teammates, yet it's never enough. His skills are impressive, so much so that even Sarah can overcome her dislike for him and give him his flowers. However, if you analyze his strengths you will reach the core of why his character is a tragic one. The show makes a very clear point that Kageyama is just on a completely different level than Oikawa as a setter, his natural abilities eclipsing Oikawas efforts. There is a pre-match sequence that put's this without words perfectly: as Kageyama lays on his bed practicing sets, Oikawa is awake, watching Karasuno's previous match to prep. This isn't just a work ethic thing, Kageyama also works hard but he trusts his abilities enough to just wait for game day, while Oikawa is obsessing over every little detail, because if it weren't the case, he wouldn't stand a chance against Kageyama. Oikawa's second core strength is his profound knowledge of his teammates tendencies, what is their mental like? what tosses do they like? what do they excel at individually? He has to resort to this, not only because he is a good teammate but because he understands that he can't really get much more out of himself as a setter, probably already having found his natural limits. Oikawa's last strength is his killer serve, since he already is doing his best as a setter, teammate and analyzing the game to the best of his abilities, he brute forces himself to be able to jump serve reliably, to the point of overworking himself just to get an edge. If you put all these qualities together, you should have a superstar setter, but in reality that's only Oikawa's barrier to entry, in the end, he is just an ordinary guy desperatly reaching for a talent he simply doesn't posses in a sport he clearly loves. That's why Kageyama is so threatening to Oikawa; for Oikawa, Kageyama is a ticking bomb, it's not a matter of if he will be surpassed by him, but when; for Kageyama, his little rivalry with Oikawa is merely a stepping stone to a bigger stage, and Oikawa knows this. That's when Oikawa's silly attitude comes full circle, he's a bit of a joker outwardly but he must be misserable inside knowing that he cannot live up to the aspirations he has for himself.

  • @empressgloom
    @empressgloom 7 місяців тому +52

I agree that Oikawa's feelings are not Kageyama's fault, not that anyone blames him, but that doesn't make his feelings invalid. At that scene, Oikawa was clearly having a mental breakdown. The red perspective and the look on his face after realizing what he almost did was a dead giveaway. He have 3 years worth of frustrations from being second best, as he said, they never even won a set from that specific opponent. He has even reached a point that he's overworking himself, the point is he's doing his best to overcome that opponent and be able to participate in the national tournament and the more he tries, the more painful each defeat comes. As a 14 or 15 year old kid, insecurity is inevitable at that point (he's a teenager, it's normal).
For all his plaudits, we've seen how self-aware Oikawa is (maybe not so much as a middle schooler), so being faced with the immense talent of Kageyama and subsequently being replaced in a game/practice match will be like a nail in the coffin. Again, it is not Kageyama's fault rather, I think the blame should go to the middle school coach who had both of them and never made anything out of it. There's a parallel of conflict between what happened in Oikawa and Kageyama's third year of middle school. The lack of guidance breeding that environment is apparent. Oikawa thinks that he needs to get better so that the team can win and go to nationals while Kageyama thinks that he is so good that his teammates should just follow him so they can win and play more volleyball.
In the end, they both got their lessons the hard way. Oikawa's growth is then shown as he said that "This award is proof that our spikers gave it all they had" upon receiving the Best Setter Award. He did not make the award about himself, instead, it shows how much he thinks highly and values his hitters. Lastly, it seems like Kageyama does not even remember that night encounter with Oikawa, so there was barely any impact to him (bless his innocence). Oikawa was still immature after though. Unfortunately for Kageyama, his middle school mistakes seemed to haunt not just him but also Kindaichi. It is a small detail but I get sad every time Kindaichi reacts each time he notices some growth or change in Kageyama. He's wondering if what he did in middle school was wrong but the truth is that he has been the trigger for Kageyama's self-awareness no matter how traumatic that game was for them.

I got to say the kitagawa coach has to be the worst coach in this series, he almost ruined both oikawa and kageyama, sure his reason for subbing them out was perfectly fine, but he didn't provide the proper guidance to them afterwards, if not for iwaizumi and karasuno both oikawa and kageyama was likely going to slip deeper down with the problems they had.
and with oikawa, yes his insecurities got the better of him, but understandably he was been pincered at both ends, with a wall he couldn't overcome whatsoever, and then with kageyama showing up growing at a rate that looks like he could overtake him at anytime
    Spoilers ahead for manga:

Instead of coaching Oikawa and teaching him that it’s not his fault that they’re losing to Ushijima it’s a team issue and not using Kageyama as an opportunity to teach Oikawa how to nurture a younger player Oikawa goes through a mental breakdown. THEN 2 years later you don’t manage to tell that Kageyama is going through struggles also and needs coaching instead you have his entire team hate him FIRE THIS COACH he doesn’t deserve a job especially knowing the caliber of players that Oikawa and Kageyama become under proper coaching in the future

His confidence seems to inspire confidence in his team; his snarky remarks act to discourage the opponents. It seems almost strategic compared to an s4 character that is driven by ego. He never says things like "a hitter is bad if they cant hit my sets," he does not rest on his laurels even despite individual accolades recieved. Because I think the reason a lot of us like oikawa is because we know the feeling of not being blessed with amazing skills and physiques and working so hard only to keep coming in second place. It’s a frustration that is hard to understand at that age which at this oikawa was 15ish in the flashback. That frustration increases when he realizes it’s not just one person in the whole district but also in his school he can’t even be the best.

11:38 (discussion related to it at 11:55~) 「な~んかいずそうな打ち方だなぁ、月島…」→ "Tsukishima's not hitting it with all he's got" isn't the best translation. I believe「いずい」is a northern Japan dialect that means something like "Doesn't feel right / Doesn't fit / Feels uncomfortable", so a more literal translation would be like "The way Tsukishima's hitting seems like it's really uncomfortable for some reason...". so it's not so much that Ukai thinks Tsukishima's "not hitting with all he's got (11:58)" intentionally, but more that Tsukishima appears to be uncomfortable & UNABLE to make the best of his hits for some reason.

It makes me so sad that we get a flashback from Oikawa’s pov to understand him as a middle schooler, with the immense pressure to be the best and compete with a younger kid who is deemed a prodigy, a genius. He is so stressed, to the point of finally breaking down. He seems horrified when he realizes he almost hit Kageyama. Yet, people still look at it from Kageyama’s pov: still judge Oikawa harshly.

They judge him harshly because no matter what sort of personal struggles one is dealing with, its still no excuse to almost assault another person, especially one of your teammates. Kageyama completely idolized Oikawa. Imagine fanboying over someone on your team and then having them take a swing at you, and you have no idea why. The poor thing still kept trying to ask his senpai for help, and Oikawa gave him nothing. I love Oikawa as a character, so I can sympathize with his struggles with insecurity. Hell, I can even empathize, because I struggle with that a lot myself. It will still never be acceptable for him to attack Kageyama over that. You can understand where Oikawa is coming from, and still critique his actions for being out of line.

Wow this might be the first time I disagree with Sarah on something 😅
Yes Oikawa should not have lashed out at Kageyama a persons mental health issues are not an excuse for violence. That being said he’s going through a clear mental breakdown and to just say you’re the captain and starter your insecurities are a you problem I just can’t agree with it. I don’t think we should just blame a 14/15 year old boy for having insecurities and not being taught proper ways to handle what he perceives as his failures! (We can see this in his language before Iwaizumi headbutts some sense into him and he changes his volleyball philosophy “I want to win I want to go to nationals.” I’m not good enough) This fundamentally comes down to a failure in his coaches in my opinion they have never won a single set vs Shiratorizawa and this coaching staff has done NOTHING they were hands off with Oikawa and hands off with Kageyama when he was a 3rd year as well! There is no reason why these KIDS should be feeling this pressure. Like the middle school coaches suck they have TWO generational setters in the prefecture with Oikawa and Kageyama and didn’t produce anything from it they should be fired just based on results let alone failing to develop them as humans 😂 If there was a Takeda or Ukai there coaching Oikawa and Kageyama neither of them would have ever reached their breaking points, but then we wouldn’t get the beautiful story of Haikyuu that we have currently 😅
Oikawa and Kageyama were victims of bad middle school coaching and they both should have had counseling or therapy. We should not handwave a persons mental struggles just because they’re talented, skilled, good looking or whatever other positive thing you perceive them as we all struggle and that’s why Oikawa is the most human character in this show👏👏👏

When Tobio realized, or, rather, was made aware, that Oikawa views him as a rival, it only pumped him up. It was the first player he'd met who was as talented and dedicated to the sport as Kageyama himself. Only after Oikawa left for high school his problems started. As he said a few episodes before, he thought he went to a great powerhouse school, but it was just that one amazing player that was great. Yes, he tries to beat Oikawa, but also in complete admiration of him, and will continue to learn from his techniques and repeat his moves (if you pay close attention to the gameplay). And I agree with people who say that coaches utterly fail them, by letting conflicts in the team to just escalate.
Also, about Iwaizumi being better suited to be captain, there is a chapter in the spin-off comedy manga Haikyuu-bu about why it's not that great of an idea, and Oikawa turned out to be a better one for the role :):):):)

I think people will always see what part of Oikawa they choose to see according to the type of lives they have personally led and the kinds of people they have had to deal with. And it is the same with Kageyama. I would not like to work with either of Oikawa's or Kageyama's past self. Even though I admire Oikawa the most after finishing the series and Kageyama is a character that I've came to love gradually after watching the anime like... 4 times and reading the manga twice. It took me a while to finally be able to understand Kageyama's mindset because we're both essentially very different people. Contrary to which I have been able to grasp Oikawa a lot faster. And I think it is perfectly fine for any person for whom it takes longer to understand either of them, it is absolutely valid. I only ever really understood Kageyema after watching Sarah and Adam highlight his emotions that they're able to connect to more quickly. And I'm really glad for it.
It is definitely inexcusable that Oikawa's insecurities led to an almost physical attack on Kageyama and that Kageyama, who does not dwell too much into human emotions asked Oikawa to teach him again, to which he was straight up refused. But Kags found his own way to learn, he thought "if he's not teaching, I'll do it on my own" and he just watched Oikawa serve and did his best to copy him. Hurt people shouldn't hurt people. But it is just as inexcusable about Kageyama that he doesn't dwell too much into the emotions of his own teammates which led to his cross off with his team in junior high. If emotions of your teammates would not be a crucial part of Volleyball, Kageyama would never even bother. And just as Kageyama is growing to understand the "current state" of his teammates and we're able to see his journey close up, Oikawa is growing too. He has grown till the third year of high school, I think it'd be a cherry on top if he could show Kageyama the respect that he deep down feels for him. They are literally 16 -18 year olds. They are both discovering new emotions along with their games. Kageyama only looks up to Oikawa and Oikawa only thinks of Kageyama as an enemy which would later develop into a proper rivalry. I personally love how both of these characters are complex and their journey is not so smooth.

At 7:00 I get Adam's enthusiasm completely!! That's how I felt when I first watched it, it was such a "gotcha!" moment for Karasuno, and it shows that Aoba Josai's players are also just kids and don't have enough experience to anticipate that depending on non-technical tells can backfire. As a non athletic person, moments like these take me into the psyche of athletes and it's really so interesting how many mind games go into sports, something that is typically stereotyped as brawn > brains

I don't believe Oikawa has a chip on his shoulder when it comes to Kageyama. If anything, it's more a competitive spirit. He sees Kageyama as a proper rival, which is why he acts the way he does towards him. But Oikawa gives credit where it's due and we know he acknowledges Kageyama.
Also, after reading the comments, I see varying opinions from people regarding Oikawa's back story and almost hitting/pushing Kageyama. Everyone agrees it's not excusable, but I feel like people make it sound so easy to just not do it. It's easy to be a 3rd person and make those kinds of comments, but it's a fact that people react differently under extremely stressful situations. And no one can say for sure, unless they've experienced it themselves, that they wouldn't have done what Oikawa did at the time. Being in the actual situation yourself and being a 3rd person are totally different because it's possible you could act differently than what you'd expect. That's totally normal unless you've really thought about it beforehand and have strong beliefs and morals and support system. Just my 2 cents.

We can't forget that Oikawa wa also really young back then, and he was having a panick attack. Again, there's no villain in Haikyuu. I agree with everyone else who mentioned this. Why are you taking Kageyama's perspective when this is Oikawa's flashback you should be thinking about it from Oikawa's perspective and all the pressure he was feeling and his insecurites because he worked so hard to get were he is and here comes a prodigy first year who has to do practically nothing and is excelling in everything. I expected it from Sarah since she never really liked or likes Oikawa but respects him as a player, but you Adam you were always reserving your judgment and yet when it FINALLY came for Oikawa's backstory you take Sarah's perspective(not that it was wrong) as your own when hers is all about Kageyama and not Oikawa like it should have been.

sometimes it is not the case of "forgeting whats positive" but rather "good does not justify the bad"
i mean, its not great metaphor for oikawa's case but when someone is a serial killer nobody looks at them and goes "yeah he killed all those victims but people forget that he donates to charity and helps in animal shelter on weekends". no, there is limits to how much bad can be justified by good and sometimes some things cant be ignored no matter how much good there is.
ofc as i said the example i made is extreme but metaphor stands, yes oikawa was in bad state of mind but that does not justify physical assault on someone younger than you nor is it an excuse that allow someone to be a-hole with a free pass.

That being said, to address your other thing. difference between iwaizumi headbutting oikawa and oikawa trying to slap kageyama is in the context. firstly iwa and oikawa are childhood friends so there is level of trust formed. ofc it is not ok that iwa headbutted oikawa but there is trust between friend that states you wont run to court every time you have disagreements. as for kags being verbally abusive, that still fits into friendship clause up to the point where he goes overboard in season4 when its addressed so i think you already know answer to that one but lacked better examples so we are on the same boat with that :)

I think Sarah might not connect with Oikawa, probably due to cultural differences. In Asia, the environment often leans towards a competitive vibe rather than a collaborative one. Growing up in this comparison-driven world, I can relate a lot to Oikawa. Even though I didn't put in as much effort as Oikawa, I still felt a lot of insecurities when I was young.
Oikawa didn't want to mentor Tobio, his competitor, because he didn't want to reveal his own strengths. I used to be like that in junior high too. It took getting older for me to understand the importance of sharing and collaboration. That's why I love Oikawa more than Tobio. His journey taught me that instead of blaming myself for not being good enough, I should first focus on whether I've given my best effort.

everyone hates on oikawa even after seeing his backstory. he clearly has huge imposter syndrome - being deemed "the best" but personally knowing that there are innately talented people who are already ahead of you, and while you're already sprinting to catch up, theres someone better right on your back who might surpass you at any moment - that's an uneasy position to come to terms with and not to mention the enormous pressure to stay on top of your game. if his survival mechanism is to be a little begrudging and immature towards kageyama, then that's better than not taking accountability and being bitter. he's never blamed kageyama for his own insecurities but he recognises that kageyama is a trigger for him (as well as ushiwaka). i think oikawa's character is so human that if you hate him, you're just refusing to accept that actual people have flaws which don't necessarily make them a bad person.

Hi Sarah and Adam, thank you for your reactions and insights! It's lovely to see your perspectives, and please be assured that my comments are not intended to oppose your feelings. It's great to see various interpretations.
A little personal understanding to Oikawa & Kageyama dynamic: what Oikawa said to Kageyama after their last middle school match is not about being petty. In the context of animes (forgive me if I'm wrong), it's not uncommon for a senior to challenge their junior to future matches upon graduations. If anything, it shows that Kageyama was acknowledged by Oikawa as a respected rival, and Oikawa had grown more confidentce to welcome challenges from Kageyama. It's actually a moment that I come to appreciate.
Regarding Oikawa's insecurity, I just want to say that, maybe it's not an "all him problem"? The pressure he's been under was tangible. Yes, what he already had should satisfy most middle school athletes, but frustration and fear often come from high self-requirements. As someone who aims to play on national level, he DID look second best. Him being "not as gifted" was not only in his head, but also recognized by his coach and by Iwaisumi. He failed in the same situation, year after year, despite giving his full effort, which definitely puts a toll on one's mentality. Kageyama, at this very point, came in with everything Oikawa did not have: immense talent, and the love for volleyball that was not stained by self-doubt and failures. I would say it's not unreasonable for Oikawa to feel not needed and unworthy. Yes, Kageyama did nothing wrong and he was pure and cute and should receive support rather than being pushed away, but people are not always at their best state to give the most appropriate reaction, especially considering Oikawa was also young himself and was struggling with his own issues.
All I want to say is that, indeed, Oikawa could have seen things from a more mature and open perspective, but don't many mental health issues start from not being able to adjust perspectives because of particular experiences or situations?
All the controversies aside, I also want to appreciate a little point about the Oikawa & Kageyama rivalry. Kageyama, based on years of observation and admiration, can perfectly read into Oikawa's mentality and habit. Oikawa, in turn, is aware of how much Kageyama has grown just from that one play. I love this mutual understanding on the court.
Once again, thank you for sharing your opinions and feelings, Sarah and Adam. I genuinely appreciate your perspectives, and I hope the conversations in the comment section haven't made you feel pushed back. It's wonderful to have your reactions.

There is another interesting point about Kageyama’s relationship with Oikawa that I haven’t seen really discussed. Kageyama is extremely happy about having a point of reference in Oikawa, an “amazing player”, a setter that he wants to surpass. But he wasn’t able to ask the _right_ questions: asking for technical advice about an individual skill, the jumping serve. When it comes to technical skills, Kageyama gets there faster, intuitively and with less effort because that’s his strength or talent. So Oikawa doesn’t answer him _on this particular request_
This is something that I think is more typical of the kind of mentoring traditionally used in Japan from older times. The student isn’t really coached on certain things until he is ready or until he has perfected other aspects of his learning process. I think Furudate was writing Oikawa and Kageyama with *mentoring by example and imitation* , rather than direct teaching, in his mind . Oikawa will recognize Kageyama as his “junior” or as his student only after Kageyama will be ready to learn what is Oikawa’s area of expertise, the only area that he CAN teach Kageyama usefully. Teaching him to serve is rather not necessarily: Kageyama has the ability already to get there and it will give him just an “unfair” advantage in their little context. But there are other things Kageyama needs to work on, whereas Oikawa gets there faster: for example at the end of this episode Oikawa is extremely motivated by Kageyama’s comprehensive analysis about that last play in the set. He recognizes Kageyama’s progress in his own area of expertise, where Kageyama hasn’t really challenged him yet!
I would really like for Sarah to read this, because I think enjoying Oikawa as a character *doesn’t* mean expressing a preference for him instead of Kageyama. It is just that understanding both of them gives me much more appreciation for what they both give the story.
And Oikawa will be ultimately Kageyama’s reference. Suga lacks the competitive nature or that same yearning to play, so he may be good as a teammate but not as an ultimate motivation.

Oikawa is easily understood by those who have faced the same problems. Rivalry. When a 1-year-old genius is on your heels and tries to learn something from you, it really irritates you and I understand him perfectly when you try your best, but there are still those who will be one step ahead because he is just a genius. And that moment when he wanted to hit Kageyama is quite understandable. He was mentally unstable because of losing to Ushiwaka and the fact that it seemed to him that everyone would prefer the genius Kageyama to him, because he is not so talented. But Kageyama at his age was rude to his teammates, but his actions are always justified. Although the question is why? The fact that you can’t pass to the attackers with which they can beat him is his problem, isn’t it? So why did he blame his teammates for everything, supposedly they play badly. The same with Oikawa, all his actions are understandable, but for some reason people are always biased towards him.
And yes, he said "srry" to Kageyama after the incident. Wtf guys.....you're not objective.

Thankfully Kageyama was too ignorant to understand that situation back in middle school. High School Kageyama might have certainly had a reaction to that outburst from Oikawa.

    hmm, I wonder though.
Both Oikawa and kageyama having a bad experience in their middle school means that their coach was in the wrong, no?

ugh i dont like ur take with "thats ur insecurity thats ur problem" what if its from karasuno player? definitely u would defend him right, sarah? but because its oikawa u wont acknowledge him. insecurity is a common thing in this side of world, to not understand him its a dick move imo. we saw ennoshita get insecure too but later u cheer him up, so if its oikawa u despise him no matter what huh

To all Oikawa defenders in comments. I'd like to take a few words out of Tsukishima's mouth and tell you what people are able thinking for themselves i.e. make their own opinions about characters in a show. You all pushing them in certain 'right' direction feels exactly like for Tsukishima to get sets Kageyama think is the best, not giving anyone options to have their own thoughts.

Well, a veeeery good chapter. I think that you, and we, were so happy and proud with Kageyama`s evolution (A mean, we`re all like Suga when he seems him talk with Tsukushima, A bunch of proud mamas and papas) and the volleyball action, that I missed more comments about the history about Oikawa and Kageyama.
And no, a don`t want a marital discussion, is just that, to me, this is the really important episode about Oikawa and... I have to comment.
    So, without much order:
-As a psychologist, I find myself thinking... Maybe the Oikawa punching friend whose name I don`t remember is "helping" in his friends confidence issues. He is verbal and phisical abusing, and that can`t be good. I know is a common theme in animé, hitting like a "comic" think, but, you know, if you goes to psychological depts, you can consider this too.
-And Adam finally saw the complete hardworking person that is Oikawa, and the profound passion he has to FINALLY win to... Shiratorizawa? And that really, is not Kageyama his problem, his problem is that he could`nt win to this team, this person, and Kageyama is "another" genius that came in the way. To him, Kageyama isn`t a kohai (person with less experience that you that, in theory, you have to guide), is the enemy.
-So, with the goal to have the six more powerfull persons in the court, he evolves in a very emotionally inteligent person to win... So, to me, this make his relationship with his team no very... pure? I think. If you see that to him his best friend is a person that abuse him, I think Oikawa not have a good example.
-And talking about good examples... SUGA just came and make us see what a excellent senpai (the person with experience that have to guide) in the same predicament with Kageyama, could do.
And for that, I`m with Sarah. I can understand Oikawa, like a person that need to work in himself and right now is not a very good person.
I dòn`t hate him like her used to do (I think Sarah hate is not as enormous than before), but I don`t like him at all.
An for that, I need a fanfiction about a sport psychologist take Oikawa case.
And sorry for the looooong comment.
    Until next week!

Gotta disagree with the commenters here saying that Oikawa is blameless for his mental breakdown and subsequent treatment of Kageyama. Sure, the coach could've done A LOT more to meditate the conflict between Kageyama and Oikawa, but Oikawa navigated that situation just about as poorly as he could have. Even after Oikawa is "over it" and learns the true value of teammates, he still is incredibly shitty to Kageyama, which is not really justifiable imo.

Who said Oikawa was blameless? All people tried to say is just Oikawa gets to much hate when he ALMOST hit Kageyama because he was traumatized. But yet Iwa kicked and head banged Oikawa/Kageyama verbally abused teammates for years and attacking Hinata are totally fine because whatever reason they had or had change for those who hate Oikawa. Tell me this is fair.

@@chamomilechien3210 basically every single comment on this video is defending Oikawa, so I don't get why you have the impression that he is unfairly hated. He is widely beloved among Haikyuu fans as one of the most relatable, human characters.
My point is that humans are flawed, and his actions and behavior towards Kageyama are not really defensible in any way. I would say the same thing about how Kageyama yelled at his middle school teammates. Iwaizumi hitting Oikawa is not great either tbh. So no, I don't think I'm being unfair by judging Oikawa for his words and actions.

    • @chamomilechien3210
      @chamomilechien3210 7 місяців тому

@@t3cchan Because most of the haikyu fans knows how every character has there struggles and will eventually grow up so they won’t judge a character just by one cut. But for those reacters who may never get the chance to experience what happened in the future of haikyu story if they don’t read the mangas, they may never understand why Haruichi Furudate put so much effort to complete every character’s backstory.
And yes you are being unfair cause I’m pretty sure you didn’t compared Kageyama/Iwa to serial killer when these scenes comes out and ask why reacters didn’t against them using violence. You and that kaaru can hate or judge Oikawa for what he did, since it will be too much to ask for you two to understand why fans can love Kageyama and Oikawa and every character at the same time. You two and Sarah just have to bear with him cause he won’t fade out of haikyu’s story anyway.

@@chamomilechien3210 Where did I compare Oikawa to a serial killer? lol. I think you are confusing me with someone else.
You are really overreacting to something that isn't a big deal. Oikawa was a PoS to Kageyama in middle school. Now that he's in high school, he's mostly grown out of it. Similarly, Kageyama was a PoS to his teammates in middle school. Now, he is slowly but surely growing out of it. Acknowledging that Oikawa was terrible to Kageyama doesn't mean I hate Oikawa as a character. It's okay to recognize that Oikawa is flawed, and unfairly lashed out at Kageyama. That's really all there is to it.

  • @hachi1404

Kageyama's isolation at junior high might have been started from Oikawa's attitude. Seems that baby Kageyama was just an innocent boy who loved playing volleyball but the team captain did not behave kind to him, and Kageyama did not have anyone like Iwaizumi for Oikawa. Kageyama is a bit different from normal kid since all he wants is playing volleyball appropriately, and that made deeper split from his teammates. I like Oikawa’s childish part as well as Kageyama’s insensitiveness since they are both based from eagerness for volleyball.
Anyway, it is very lucky for Kageyama to become a member of Karasuno. Senpais there are just eager to go to nationals and they don’t judge anything except he goes against the spirit of teamwork.
Last but not least, Adam’s back head today looks cute like a crow's tail😊

Heyy Sarah and Adam, i would like to give you a recommendation to react The First Slam Dunk Movie by Takehiko Inoue. It's one of the best sports manga and anime of all time. This show is on same level with Haikyuu and maybe arguably better than Haikyuu. In fact, the author of Haikyuu was inspired by Takehiko Inoue (Slam Dunk Writer's). The animation is on another level, It's very good at giving the impression of real basketball movements. More importantly, I want to know from athlete perspective about The First Slam Dunk Movie. I hope you read this and make my wish come true 🙏🤞. Thank You
