    32:31 The phrase "makete-tamaruka" not only conveys a determination to win, but also a stronger sense of indomitable spirit and an unwavering belief in achieving noble goals without ever giving up. I think that the phrase contains a stronger sentiment, one that evokes inner energy, rather than using the word "win."

    So real quick right after the intro, I just wanted to reassure you both - the overwhelming majority of us know full well that 1) Adam is more than capable of forming his own opinions, and that 2) Sarah has consistently been willing to give Oikawa credit where it's due as an athlete. Some of us commenters may joke or bust your balls about it, but mostly it's meant to be good-natured joking and all in good fun, and we both respect your opinions and enjoy watching for exactly those reasons. I think some people just enjoy being a little sassy with the joking because Sarah is also quite sassy and there's probably a sense of kindred spirit that's enjoyable 😂😉 But yeah, don't worry one bit; we love you guys and our opinions exactly as is, and I would even go so far as to say you probably didn't even need to say all of that or explain anything to begin with (though it's of course appreciated). Anyway, have a great one! ❤

      We still can't ignore haikyuu fans that are a bit too fanatical, for lack of a better term, when it comes to liking characters and other people liking the characters they like. It's not like its a behavior you only see in Haikyuu fans as it's basically common place in the anime community as a whole. But for people like Adam and Sarah who just barely got started watching anime, they're not really familiar with that type of behavior which can make it hard for them to differentiate between those who jest, like you, and the actual fans that are getting mad because they don't like Oikawa.
      And I always hear this saying as well echoed throughout the haikyuu fandom, and that is "there's no unlikeable character in haikyuu". Tbh, it's just not true. There's a significant difference between understanding a character and actually liking them. Take Oikawa for example since he's already the topic of this whole thing. You can understand where he's coming from and the frustrations and trials he's been through, for sure. But that still doesn't change the fact that some people can still find his attitude off-putting. He's cocky, petty and often times insecure. Yes there are reasons why he feels that way, and some people might feel like it's justified behavior. But there are others that still won't condone his behavior even after understanding his circumstances.

    With the whole "do not lose" thing, or "we cannot lose here", oftentimes you see that phrasing when the team is 1) in a pinch, clearly, and 2) getting a bit too into their own heads - at least off the top of my head when I'm trying to think of situations like this. With Karasuno, Kageyama when he gets panicked, and in some other future plays too, especially when it gets repetitive, so I'd say that that line of thought generally seems to have a negative/ineffective connotation in Haikyuu.

    It's natural for people from various countries to perceive Oikawa's behavior off the court negatively because it can mean the opposite when not familiar with Japanese communication culture. Of course, the same goes for Season 2.
    It's unfortunate when the meaning or message of a story changes, but that's part of what makes reaction videos interesting, including those aspects. Above all, I hope Sarah can relax and enjoy it :)

    I just wanted to know what Adam's thoughts were when Takeda (GM of Karasuno), said that Seijoh might be the stronger team but sometimes Karasuno will use 70% of their abilities and sometimes bounce up to 120%. Just like how Hinata can change the momentum of the game with his attacks at times. It just intrigued me when Adam said that it was "an interesting observation from a non-volleyball person".

    • @saltyorobsessed
      @saltyorobsessed 11 місяців тому +4

      I love that Takeda Sensi is referred to as the GM (general manager) because to me I only hear that term in the context of working (like in a kitchen or at a store) so there’s just something a little amusing to me about referencing him as the GM of Karasuno. Makes me think of an AU where Karasuno is a store that Takeda Sensi runs 😂

    • @karavalgardson3071
      @karavalgardson3071 11 місяців тому +6

      I would say Takeda has a high insight modifier, lol. He seems very in touch with how people are feeling/dynamics going on within a team (for example his comments during the warm ups of this match about Oikawa watching his team closely and Sejoh being in good shape as a team).
      So, while he may not know a lot regarding the technical aspects of volleyball, his observations regarding psychological or more abstract concepts are usually spot on. Him being a literature teacher probably helps with that.

    • @adamschulz9475
      @adamschulz9475 10 місяців тому +4

      When ever Takeda speaks everyone should listen!! lol He has really good insights (albeit not technical) into the overall picture of what is happening between both teams. I think his comment was completely accurate. Karasuno has a few more "game breakers" but Seijoh is just a well oiled machine. So to me that comments means with all of Karasuno's players are connecting and the top players are at their peak they are stronger. However they have not found the consistency to play like that all the time. Seijoh however is a team that makes you beat them.

    Yamaguchi is one of my dearest boys and I think he's soooo underrated. His character development is sooo brilliant starting from him asking Shimada to teach him one thing that could make him valuable to the team to where he ends up (that even Sarah doesn't know yet) is one of the best stories in Haikyuu, in my opinion, but because we get only little glimpses into it like an episode per season it goes kind of under the radar.

  • @karavalgardson3071
    @karavalgardson3071 11 місяців тому +82

    Personally, I think most commentators in the last video just wanted to share their (perhaps strongly held) perspectives and observations and have an opportunity to discuss them with others, including asking Adam's views on certain things (like if Oikawa and Kageyama's middle school coaches failed them). Oikawa is a very polarizing character, and one a lot of people relate to, so it's more intense. Any comments were out of line or bashing anyone were in the very rare minority, from what I saw.
    I think most viewers have watched Haikyu more than once, probably even more than twice, before watching this reaction series. So their opinions are informed by stuff Adam (and even Sarah) hasn't seen/read yet - even if they aren't directly stating any spoilers. Oikawa is my favourite character (though I still wouldn't say I love his personality), but that definitely wasn't the case until maybe after my second watch through, and after I had heard others' analysis.
    I'm excited to see how Adam's opinion on not just Oikawa, but other players as well, evolves over the course of the show - and to see how Sarah reacts to certain storylines and events in season two and beyond now that she has more context.

    Regarding running slides, Adam's right in that it does tend to happen a bit more frequently in Japanese / Asian men's volleyball than men's teams in other places. It's still not exactly done often or particularly frequently, but since they are on average smaller but faster than players from western countries tend to be, they have shown more of a propensity for running more unorthodox plays like that. I can't speak to the difference in frequency between the national level and high school or other levels, though.
    The play at 15:45 is one of my favorite examples of Hinata's greatest asset (currently) as an athlete. He basically gives his 120 percent for EVERY play. And he's SO good in that moment that as Kageyama remarks, he almost decoyed his own setter into sending him the ball even when Kageyama knew that the right play there was to set Asahi. As Kageyama thought, "I was about to have my toss taken", as in, "I was about to have my decision-making for where the toss should go taken away from me."
    For Sarah - I count the serve at 21:10 as an example of Oikawa missing his serve, actually. I understand that it technically went in and got the point, but that was very clearly not how he intended to hit that, and he just happened to get lucky. I think that point is meant to show us exactly that - he's practiced a ton and his serve is easily the most consistent out of anybody we've seen, but it's not invincible; he doesn't get it right 100 percent of the time.
    The anxiety that enters my body whenever I see the situation with Yamaguchi is overwhelming. A one week-old brand new skill that he's learning, being brought in against what has been *easily* their strongest opponent so far at an absolutely critical moment, expected to turn the momentum around, and it's his literal first time actually playing on the court since the 3v3 at the very start of the series, when him and Tsukki + Daichi were put against Hinata and Kageyama + Tanaka. "Tough situation" doesn't even begin to cover it lmao, I'm amazed he didn't puke on the floor right then and there (though if I had to guess, it was probably a close thing). Also as a quick aside, I love that Ukai acknowledges at 30:08 that Daichi did an even better job than himself in that moment. He understands that Daichi just knows and understands the team's overall mentality better at this point than he does, but isn't upset about it - just grateful to have someone that capable on their side. And I love that the rest of the team heard Daichi's "next time" comment and immediately resolved themselves to win the match too, so that Yamaguchi could even have that "next time" opportunity.
    As for the translations of the mentality - the wording is translated pretty well actually. There is a difference between the moments it happened, though. When they were all thinking it at 32:30, it was more out of conviction and just REFUSING to lose. In contrast, Tanaka's thoughts at 34:55 are definitely more in the camp where I'd be concerned. Thankfully his serve is relatively simple and ends up landing in, but that's definitely a moment where you'd prefer him to be thinking positively instead. Still, while it's important to point that out, it's still a very real moment. Even for players who are incredibly mentally tough, like Tanaka, those thoughts are absolutely going to happen every now and then. He got his thinking back on track immediately following, but it's impossible to absolutely never have those thoughts occur, so I like that they show that.
    Finally, that last play sends chills down my spine every single time. Massive props to Kageyama for seeing Oikawa do something similar earlier in the set and immediately adding it to his own repertoire. Kudos as well to Hinata for having such absolute faith that Kageyama would manage to get to the ball that he went up and jumped to swing. Great job by the animation team, the music, and the storyboarding for splicing in those frames of the hand catching the back of the opponent and maximizing the emotional impact of that moment. Also, from the shading and look of the arms reaching out, I may be wrong, but to me it *looks* like the arm that almost reaches the back (35:29) is Kageyama's - almost there but not quite enough to catch up to Oikawa... but the hand and arm at 35:36 look more like Hinata's, signifying that with them together, it's enough to catch up. I love this show.

    Adam did really well in his predictions for the plays this episode. He calls for things seconds before it happens just like what Sarah used to do in her first reaction.
    Also, in defense of the Oikawa Defense Squad, I think most od the comments does not wish any harm. The comment section is seen as a good place for a discussion especially if there are professionals who can participate. Your opinions and perspective are highly anticipated that's why the people are so passionate in trying to highlight the small details that could potentially lead to a different perspective. Haikyu is so good at incorporating small details beautifully, thus it would be such a shame to not appreciate it to the fullest.

    "not going to lose" => "like hell we're gonna lose!" is more like it. it's more of a mindset of "i'm/we're gonna win." it's a Japanese phrase that seems to be hard to translate as what it really means than what it literally says. i think a lot of fighting anime has that phrase when the protagonist is on verge of death. lulz i may be wrong since it's been a while i've watched Kimetsu, but you might hear that phrase from Tanjiro a lot on your other channel.

    Only at the 5 minute mark, but I've never had any concerns personally about Adam not having his own opinion on this. Also perfectly fine if people don't like Oikawa (or any other characters). Oikawa in particular I think hits a lot of fans personally, because he's an example of someone trying to overcome people with more natural talent than him, which a lot of fans related to, so they defend him a bit more personally than most characters. But not everyone will like his personality and thats fine. Also want to just add another comment saying that Sarah does acknowledge Oikawa's abilities (as much as it kills her sometimes lol)
    Regarding Tanaka's thoughts at the end, as far as I can tell (my Japanese isn't super great), the translations more or less captured the mind right.

    There's a misconception that a lot of Haikyuu fans like to parrot around, and that's "there's no unlikeable character in Haikyuu". To which I say, it's just untrue. There's a difference between understanding someone, and actually liking them. We can empathize and understand characters like Tsuki, Oikawa and the like, but you can't deny the fact that their behaviors can still rub some people the wrong way. Just because you know where they're coming from doesn't change the fact that their actions might rub some people the wrong way. It's okay to not like characters, what's not okay is policing how others should feel about a character you do like.

      100% agree. I genuinely think Haikyuu is one of those rare stories where every characters' actions make sense in the context of who they are and how they perceive themselves vs the others and each of these character arcs have very satisfying pay-offs but that doesn't mean each personality is attractive to every member of the audience. Kageyama is my favorite character and his attitude is not liked by many people. There are so many who find Hinata's intense passion and directness annoying, I find it adorable. Even fan favourites who are all around great people, teammates, and players like Noya have people who don't like them, it's only normal a personality that is written to sometimes be cocky and irritating on purpose like Oikawa doesn't work for everyone. This is not to say these people don't understand the context of his actions or his story in general.

    I think what's going on with the Oikawa thing is that Adam was just trying to acknowledge the times/situations where Sarah was right in an effort to respect the nuance of the situation, but I think it's very obvious that no one was being pushed around by the other. Disagreements don't mean that you can acknowledge when someone has a bit of a point. I think this is just a case of people misinterpreting the snippet you see through the internet window, and the conversational nuances that develop over a long relationship.

    Almost hitting Kageyama is definitely a low for owikawa. However I honestly prefer middle school Oikawa over middle school Kageyama. If oiwikawa treated me like kageyama I might hate him. (However if I was anyone else on that middle school team probably would have a roughly positive opinion of him because he seems like a good setter to work with.) On the other hand being middle school Kageyama’s teammate would make me hate him and hate volleyball. I commented this in the last ep though, both Kageyama and Oikawa are talented players that had break downs on that team which makes me think that the coach was horrible.

    Adam, regarding what you said about Oikawa being low in your book, remember that he was in middle school and aspired to be the best before graduating. It’s normal for people to be very competitive, just like how Kageyama treated his middle school teammates. I believe everyone experiences lows at some point in their lives, whether we like it or not. No one is perfect, and even I admit to having my moments.
    Sarah, you’re right. It’s your opinion, and so are ours. These discussions about life make life more enjoyable, and I believe, in the end, we are all good people.

    The question with oikawa is: Can we judge someone by one mistake they made as a teenager?
    Liking or desliking him should be discussed without giving much weight to his lowest point in the past.

  • @mikkosimonen
    @mikkosimonen 10 місяців тому +28

    LIking a character is something you either do or don't, and it's no one's place to question that. But understanding is another thing entirely. Understanding where Oikawa is coming from, or that he's best friends with Iwaizumi, or that he was having a panic attack that one time might not make you like him, but it still makes a difference to understand. Like if you say that Oikawa treats his teammates poorly, that's just not true, and that'll raise the fandom's hackles more than just not liking the character.

    One of the details that might not be super clear is that in Japan it is costumary for seniors to quit extra curricular actvities like sports halfway through their final year and focus on their studies instead. So when Daichi, a senior, says "next time" it is heavily implied he means "next match" and not "next tournament" because it is unlikely he will play next tournament.

  • @shrutichoudhary9900
    @shrutichoudhary9900 10 місяців тому +1

    Love your reactions and love what you cleared up during the intro. It can be rather overwhelming, with the huge number of people picking onto different things. You cannot please everyone and having different values, opinions and pain points is normal. It can be tiring when a lot of passion clashes in one place. Also, I don't think Sarah's passionate view on Oikawa (which is fair where they come from) can influence Adam. Just that, Haikyuu isn't a one-time watch. When I watched it for the first time, it was different from when I watched it second and third time. I noticed more things, and I realized the things I had forgotten. I liked more characters, understood some characters better. To the commentors, if you don't fit the shoe, good. But if you fit the show, maybe think about it. There's difference between justifying love for your favourite character to prevent their actions from being misinterpreted VS dictating your viewpoint. If you cannot explain it well and respectfully, it's better to stay silent. We're dealing with real people on the internet here.
    Also, I want to say Sarah and Adam, you guys are new to anime. It's really not just a Haikyuu thing to be honest. It's more of an anime thing and you will encounter people like that a lot. I remember when I watched Naruto (it was my first ever anime) and I loved it so much. And I like thinking about characters in depth. Of course, I understand that everyone is not like me. But heck, some people don't put any thought at all? There were characters who had so much to unravel and I wished the community talked more about them because those characters talked about real people in society (Danzo and Tobirama for everyone wondering whom I'm referring to). Rather, people just found a few characters to push their misogyny in comments and make them as punching bags (Talking about Sakura). Their comments would invite more people and make it a hating ground when those character's mistakes weren't even that big. It reached to the point where it ruined the anime for me. I had to clean my explore page on insta and my twitter timeline so I wouldn't see anymore posts from that community. So yeah, you'll be seeing those clashes with anime characters that are more complex. Those that don't give a definite "good" or "bad" feeling that people can rush and agree on. And Haikyuu has plenty of those.

    Oh man I’m late today! 😫 Nvm, in regards to the Oikawa situation, I think some issues might also come from language barrier and/or cultural differences.. it is possible that some people might take you two word for word, and thereby misunderstand the situation(basically the fact that you’re just jokingly fighting and not pushing one’s opinion down the other person’s throats).. putting that aside, I think it’s a sensible move on your part to address the situation so that people can be rest assured. I hope things will be sorted, you guys are the best! ❤

    Yeah, Oikawa as a player is fucking incredible.
    3 set matches have all 3 go to 25, if its a 5 set or a 7 set match the last match is 15 points.
    I love the commentary from the rec team guys, they have been there and their reminiscing is awesome
    Haikyuu does a great job showcasing middle and libero players, the sheet love everybody has for Noya as well as some other libero players in incredible.
    Oikawa misses 1 or 2 a match, its a very high %
    Betting on Yamaguchi and the luck makes total sense, you need SOMETHING there and he is just grasping at straws.I love the move and the reactions to the move.
    Yamaguchi missing is awesome, the emotions for him loosened them up and made then want retribution.
    The jersey grabbing imagery is amazing I agree.
    Noya's "If we fall we fall forwards" line is one I love, they have already done better than anybody expected, even if they loose here they have done a great think playing Seijo in 3 close sets, and its only up from here.
    I always view Hinata being there to hit that as either seeing Kageyama going for it and needs to be there OR he sees the ball and is trying to hit it direct to try to score off it.
    I don't know about it being a translation thing but remember they lose once their season is over, so I "I want to win so I can keep playing, if I loose I am done" sort of thing makes sense. He doesn't want to ruin this for his team so he CAN'T miss, there is such a large quantity of social risk.

It's not just the audacity Kageyama has to pull off wild sets because Oikawa is honestly just as audacious, but the scope of what Kageyama can do because of his next level physicality at his age sets him apart.

    Regarding Adam's question about the slide, I believe JP's high school volleyball plays mostly like how you'd expect orthodox adult volleyball would be like, so it is an extremely rare attack to pull off even for an MB/Opposite.
    Karasuno's a unicorn in this regard because the offensive power of Hinata relies on using the full width of the middle and right side. In their usual S1 rotation, Hinata often swaps positions with Sawamura while the latter goes around center back in order to free up space for Hinata's run-up. It's not explicitly stated yet at this point in the show but if you've observed, and also listened to Oikawa's comment about the slide attack ripping through air, Hinata's scoring potential is much higher whenever he's given the option to hit on the right side. This also results in a much better decoy plays because teams that fall into this trap often end up weakening the block on the left side and leaving nearly zero blockers in the middle, giving a left side spike AND a left/middle pipe more chances of success.

    Imma say this. 14 year olds are dumb. They get into fights. Physical ones. If this was the "lowest point" for Oikawa, when he was in middle school, he's doing just fine. Also reminder that this was almost 4 years ago...We should take care to not be swayed by the Recency Effect in terms of -when in the story you find something out vs when it occurred-, reframing your impression of Oikawa the high school senior because Oikawa the middle schooler took a swing at someone (who we are already biased towards) while he was having a panic attack.

  • @shadowfront21
    @shadowfront21 10 місяців тому +2

    Not trying to justify Oikawa swinging on Kags, he was clearly wrong. BUT he's was a middle schooler at the time, not an adult. 13 year olds regularly act childishly and make poor decisions. I would just urge you to keep that in mind. Being immature as a middle schooler doesn't necessarily make someone a bad person as an adult

    The basic rule of thumb is that only the *fifth* set goes to 15. If you're not playing a five set game, then all sets go to 25.
