- In addition to being a how to replace a part video, this is also a how not to diagnose a noise problem video as well, because I am assuming the noise is coming from the power steering pump because it sounds sooooo much like that noise, however I realize now I should have checked everything else I could before I condemned it.

I was struggling to install the power steering pump on my Nissan Frontier. It just wouldn't fit in the bracket. Then I saw how your bracket comes off with the pump and you knocked back that fitting in the bracket. The bracket on the Frontier won't come off without a whole lot off trouble. But I was able to knock that fitting back and the pump slid right in. Your video was much appreciated. Thank you!!!

Having the same issue, did the water pump and idler pulley recently, thanks for not cutting the video up because i was about to spend serious $ on a PSP and now i'm going out to re-check this stuff i did!
Thanks for the info on replacing the pwr steering pump, I’m sorry that wasn’t your issue.
Replace the return and feed lines along with the clamps and put a magnetic filter on the return line to capture all the metal and rubber particles floating around from the failed power steering pump.

you showed everything to diagnose the source of the noise. im about to do my friends powersteering pump and hoses your video help me get a whole total layout of his car engine. ive done worked on mostly GM Vehicles and today was my first Nissan/Infiniti DIY thank you for this awesome vid. p.s next time you work on a power steering pump when you bleed the system out keep the engine running while you steer to lock in both directions . do u it about 3-4 times each way or enough to make the noise to disappear.

Thank you . I have a way different bracket then yours though I was still able to follow your instructions your top valve cover gasket is metal mines plastic I had no idea they made a chrome valve cover for the altimas I just replaced mine I would have ordered one of those instead . 😮

I thought my power steering pump was going out, it just turned out to be my AC idler pulley! so damn relieved. it sounded just like a pump it was strange!
Dont be so hard on yourself, the fact is that Nissan's design for a simple damn power steering pump is the worst I have ever had to deal with - it completely sucks. Anytime there is noise like what you heard that made you think the PS pump was the source, take a stethoscope and put it on all the pulleys that is how to find any high pitch whine - PS pump should only be replace if its leaking or the pulley is warped. Again thanks for the video very helpful.

Another question I bought this certified 2011 toyota camry last year. And I have noticed that if I step on the brakes downhill I can feel a vibration. But if it's driving on plain road and uphill there is no issue. Is this a cause for concern? please advice thank u!!

Does the power steering work if it has fluid in it? Then it don't need to be replaced. Especially if it's not making strange noises.
Correct the reservoir barely gets low and no squeaking sound on the pump. That is why I was in doubt when the Mechanic told the power steering pump needs to be replace as well.
Any chance you remember the size of the bolts you removed? Just getting ready to do this job on my son's car, and am buying my first impact gun. I want to buy the smallest set of sockets possible, and still get the ones I'll need for this job.
i think i have to go to the shop to get this replaced. do you know what parts are needed for a replacement power steering pump? would i also need to get a new reservoir and power steering rack? or are there more things needed for the replacement?

Im currently changing out the Power Steering pump on my Altima SER and luckily found your video! I have a question on removing the pump though. any reason you decided to remove the bracket instead of the pulley to remove the pump? I figured removing the pulley would be easier but didnt want to do that yet just incase!
+Melissa Foss I dunno, I think the bracket is way easier to remove, but there are many ways to skin a cat.
good video and camera work, if there is a noise I like to spray the pulleys with lube and see if the noise goes away , this may help u to pinpoint things next time, also take 1 belt off at a time and see if the noise stops
Yeah I admit this video was a bit amateur hour for me. Oh well, I always leave my mistakes out there for people to see and learn from!
you have a lot more skill than the majority of you tubers on here for sure and thank you for responding the only other tip is to when the belt is still on take pulley on the pump off the belt will hold it or if not you can buy a pulley strap to hold it and take it off, then maybe it will sneak out without taking the brackets off, good luck to you sir.
You should try lifting both front tires off the ground and turn the steering wheel till they lock in each direction, hold for moment to let the air bleed out. Then repeat the process a couple more times till p/s Reservoir is clear of air bubbles. You can drop the car and do the same process with car on and hear for noise.
Where did you get the return hose (the one from the reservoir to the pump)? Mine's leaking, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. Also, the hoses under the fuse box and in front of the condenser are leaking too. I'm curious if I could just buy some bulk hose and cut it to the different lengths I need. Your thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!
Yes I wasn't able to find it either so I used bulk hose.
Sweet, thanks for the response. What about the hose that runs from the reservoir back to the pump? That line looks thicker than the ones under the relays. You said you replaced that one in another repair. Did you just use regular 3/8 bulk? Thanks again.

Where a stethoscope pays for itself. (or a long screwdriver) Feel ya pain mate, those noises are hard to isolate when they are down in the boondocks.

My 2001 wines for a few minutes at start up but goes away no loose lines or leaks . Guess I will check the lower clamps and spray the tension pulley. The oil is 20k miles old
Awesome video. Very detailed. Bravo for posting your mistakes. We all make them. However, after watching the video, I'd rather take a nap, so I dropped the car off at the mechanic and let them deal with the replacement. I'd rather pay.
I think you reversed the two hoses under the fuse box but shouldn’t matter it just goes up to a cooler and back
what is the plug and he bolt next to the power steering pump that you see at 4:15?

That is the lower timing cover. If that's leaking, it's engine oil.

Is this the same on a sentra same year ?
You shouldn't start the car when you first add the fluid, you should jack the front of the car then turn the wheels left and right a couple of times to get the air out then start or turn the power steering pulley to get the air out, rotating the steering a few times also does the trick, check the power steering oil reservoir for air bubbles, once air has been removed start the car.
Mine is 1996 Nissan Altima i have noticed that there was a power steering leak as well. My suspect was just the power steering pressure hose but not the power steering pump. Because i couldnt hear any sound from the pump itself. And the power steering reservoir doesnt get empty that fast. Is this correct? please advice thanks!!
Yes, correct. Just do a visual inspection of all the lines and hoses and you should find the culprit.

I can't say what it most likely is. You have to get your eyes in/under there with a flashlight and see what is wet.

Change the PS reservoir- the filter is clogged. Not enough fluid for PS pump
So we swapped the pump, and now our dash, some tail lights, heater/ ac doesnt work
Check you blinker fluid its most likely overfilled.
Did you have trouble getting the air out of the system. I got the air out seems like it but I have no power steering 🤷🏻♂️
I didn’t, but keep turning from lock to lock and eventually the air bubble will work it’s way out
@@50sKid I seem [o have gotten the air out or so it seems. No bubbles fluid topped off, but just don't have power steering at all I'm stuck.
@@ruben85374 Nah I believe there is still an air bubble trapped in there. Try again, turn lock to lock over and over again. It should work its way out of there. If not, something else is wrong.

Free Spirit they are plastic nuts that actually screw onto threads on the end of the actual lug nuts. I had to unscrew them.

At this point of so much trial and error, I would have put the for sale sign and tell the buyer it only needs new $30 pulleys. 😨😨😨
