- The ex Mersey ferry Royal Daffodil now renamed Daffodil returns to the Mersey and enters Canning dock where she will make her home. She made here way from Garston Docks where she has been for a coupe of years. The ex ferry has had 3.5 million spent on her converting it to bars and a restaurant by ex Brookside star Phil Oliver who played the tear away Tin Head. the ferry will open 9th December 2024 after final work is completed. I have been following this conversion from day 1 and have loads more to add to the story ( coming soon ) www.daffodilliveerpool,co.uk
20:20 is pure emotion as she glides across the Mersey once again, and the Iris along side midriver,,, it's like the Iris was saying welcome back old girl...... Thank you for the excellent footage..
cheers
A pity we can't or don't want to bring the Royal Iris back home. Great coverage Paul one for posterity.
Unfortunately, the Royal Iris is to far gone now…the sad reality is, she will be scrapped where she lies, moving her off that mud bank now would break her in two…😕
I thought the comment in the video said “meeting her sister ship Royal Iris” as they passed on the Mersey. Also I’m certain I was on the Royal Iris in August as I have photos. Is it Overchurch on the Thames? I did see it there years ago.
@ they have renamed one of the current ferries, formerly the Mountwood…the Royal Iris of the Mersey, , the other remaining Ferry is now Snowdrop, formerly the Woodchurch….👍🇮🇲
Respect to all of those that invested their time and money too ensure this project returned an historic part of the Mersey heritage back to Liverpool, may the crew and all those involved have every success in the future...well done folks and huge thank you 🙏
It is wonderful to see our heritage being kept in the city instead of letting it rot on the banks of the Thames like the Iris,We had a fantastic attraction in Birkenhead,The German U boat which was cut into sections because people didnt like seeing outside their window,Plantpots!! That U boat if brought over to the Canning dock would have attracted millions of visitors to the City,We have this amazing knack of shooting ourselves in the foot in Liverpool
I completely agree. I almost cried when they stole the planet from there. It was a sad site to see. The planet is now in some private dock down south I think close to another bit of Mersey history, the MV egremont Mersey ferry.
@@veryhighguy Egremont.
@@octaviussludberry9016 I am terrible at spelling am afraid. Cheers
@@veryhighguy No worries. If it wasn't me, some other nerd would point it out. 😁
i have seen the royal iris on the Thames and it is sinking half full of water I went on the iris when i was a young lad of 7 yrs its so sad paul
🇨🇰🇳🇱🙂 enjoyed this..great camera work..left Merseyside to live in Amsterdam 34yrs ago & never been back in UK..thanks for sharing..feeling nostalgic..have a nice day everyday & take care always.✌😉👍
Thanks!
As a little boy, aged around 8-10, my cousin and me used to sneak aboard the ferries, both Daffodil and Iris, to go across the water.
Because you paid on the other side, you could, if you concealed your self, travel to and fro, for free.
The gangplank crew had been told to look out for unaccompanied kids and challenge them for the fare.
My cousin, John, came up with a devious plan...
We used to engage an adult in conversation on the walk down from the Pier Head gangway, giving the appearance of being accompanied.
I have some really happy memories of "stowing away" abord these ferries.
lovely memories. did this myself hahaha.
Excellent video Paul, what a great addition to the docks.
yeah it is. great to see
I remember those decks being packed with people, there was always a crowd hurtling down the 'lanny' to get on first n grab the best seats on the top deck ! happy days !
Brilliant video thanks for sharing
Brilliant vide, thankyou watching this in Bolton.
Nice one Paul brought back a lot of happy memories👍
FANTASTIC Video Paul. Amazing. Thank you. Spoolbox
Traveled on this old girl up the Manchester Ship Canal 1985//86?
What a day, should have gone right into Pomona docks Manchester but ended up decanting at Barton lock as it was so late.
Shankes Pony into Salford after many detours into pubs long gone,we ended up in the Three Legs of Man,back of Granada studios Manchester.
A bunch of Southern posers as they probably thought we were,we walked in,Silence!
I thought we are F ,d here, turned into one of the best night's of my life, what a craic, till four o clock in the morning!
Great bunch of lads in there!
Run over to Piccadilly and jumped on the sleeper back to London.
Great days, great memories!
Glad to see the old girl made it!
Thanks for posting.
great memories
Lovely video many trips across the Mersey great that the Daffodil will be berthed at the Docks for the public to enjoy

❤ " Welcome ❤ Theres No Place Like Home . 😊 Fond memories of a Great Lady ❤
Fantastic video Paul , its great to see the Daffodil put back on the Mersey again .
thanx, yeah it is
Love these ferry boats.
I used them too and from Seacombe 5days a week.
Then had river cruises on the Iris.
Happy happy days
I filled up a bit there seeing its mate come up beside her what a send off Good luck daffodil paul
As a 67 yr old Garstonian scouser, had tears in my eyed watching this! You're a Hero to this great City of Liverpool Paul!
Iv been called a few things in my life but never that lol. As a fellow garstonian you may like this then. ua-cam.com/video/lijqQhpLGMs/v-deo.html
also you can try this one. the old rail bridge being removed ua-cam.com/video/d2DJoVyiG80/v-deo.html
Great video, Paul. I'm very pleased it's now got a new home
Me too, iv been following the conversion for years
I really enjoyed that, beautifully filmed. 😀
thanx
Brilliant video…really enjoyed watching it….
Many thanks!
wonderful... my late uncle, Captain Frank Cavanagh was one of the captains and used to let me in the school holidays in the 1960s take the helm, great memories, well done to all :)
Nice 1. here is a look around before the new owners took possession. ua-cam.com/video/H6lGORnaJDU/v-deo.html
Very nice, when can we go onboard? , any chance of some interior shots? . If anyone knows please post. It’s really great to see the river/ docks being brought back into focus.
i have the full conversion in pictures and video. from Time laps to walk arounds. there is already bits on my chanel have a look. to book it opens on the 9th December and you book here www.daffodilliverpool.co.uk
It tells you above if you bother to read it
Great film, well shot and edited to bring part of this proud city's maritime heritage up to date. Might be an idea to get someone to spell check and proof read the captions to make it perfect. Very well done all involved
hahaha am not the best at spelling
When the Canning dock gate was replaced during the Albert Dock restoration the Wincham Preservation Society part of the Friends of the Maritime museum were asked to have the m.v. Wincham to be the first vessel through. Wincham was built by Yarwoods Northwich in 1948 and as one of the ICI Mons fleet was used to tranship cargo from Nothwich to a waiting vessel in the port. The opening went well and early problems with the gate seal eventually solved. Cuddington her sister ship is at Ellesmere port Boat Museum.
Brilliant video too, well done you .
Nice to see the Vessel done up she is looking well
Excellent video thanks 🙂
That's a very nice piece, thank you.
I used to work at Stalbridge dock in the pay office for Elders and Fyffes. Like most Liverpool kids the Royal Daffodil meant long sunny days at New Brighton baths after dodging the Liverpool goldfish on the shore. Simpler life then, much missed.
Good to see the money spent on the structure to extend her life but at the same time sad to see her lifeless with static radars, no smoke stack etc
I've visited the RMS QUEEN MARY in Long Beach, CA, USA, three times and my thoughts exactly but at least there will be life aboard the DAFFODIL once she opens to the public just as it is on the RMS QUEEN MARY.
I've also been to Philadelphia a couple of times to see the SS UNITED STATES and there's absolutely no life left in her and within a year she will be sunk off the Florida panhandle to become the world's largest artificial reef.
Thankfully, the ROYAL DAFFODIL has been saved and restored and will soon be open to the public once again and hopefully for many years ahead.
I look forward to visiting her next time I am in the great City of Liverpool 😊
Excellent video, and I really enjoyed watching it. From the City of Southampton with love ❤️
Love see that, thanks for sharing. Great to see her looking so good and with a secure future.
Meanwhile, Royal Iris is posing an existential threat to the Thames Barrier - that is, if it were possible to remove hr from the mud.
Excellent......very interesting.
Great to see one of them sailing under her own power, shame its not the Royal Iris which is rotting on the Thames nr London. Will this boat be static restaurant or a sailing one?
Static. All engine and screws have been removed. It will never sail again under her own power
Loved this, as a kid a trip to new Brighton was so exotic and being in that indoor fair with the planes that went up and down. So much better now that the politicians do this sort of thing and Everton's new stadium instead of demolishing the Cavern and building communist style buildings
I lived in Whitley Bay in the 70s and every year my parents drove us to visit my relatives in Wallasey. The highlight for this 6 to 12 year old was a visit to the Palace for dodgems and other rides. As Whitley Bay was also a seaside town with similar rides it was an ironic "coals to Newcastle" experience but very welcome.
Looks great 💙
I rode on the Royal Daffodil a number of times when she used to do day trips from Tower Pier to Margate, Chatham and Strood via Southend Pier back in the 50s but IDK whether that was before or after she was a 'ferry across the Mersey'
That was a very different Royal Daffodil, a two funnel excursion ship built for Thames Estuary and SE coast work for General Steam Navigation Company. Scrapped in the 60s I believe.
Beautifully filmed, 5 ⭐🥳
cheers
The skill of those tug skippers is amazing
great video.
cheers mate
The Mountwood was renamed Royal Iris, the real Royal Iris is rotting away in the Thames somewhere. Why has the Royal been dropped from the ferry Daffodil.
@@manonthemoon2912 Mersey ferry own the right to use the word royal so they have retained it for future use I believe
Borrow the Royle Family’s title,Jim Royle would be chuffed,my Arse
Is this the ferry i used to get to New Brighton in the 60,s ?
No, it's the ex-Birkenhead ferry Overchurch.
Its a shame Liverpool doesnt have any permanent sailing ships .
It should be restored to running condition and used for heritage trips , we live in Sydney Australia and have a heritage fleet which helps pay the upkeep .
that will never happen again. the engine and screws have all been removed
What’s happening with the Royal iris?
i guess you will hear of the iris being removed by authorities any time soon due to the danger its causing. it is beyond repair now sunk on the Thames.
Phillipe Olivier former brookside actor!! Damn!! He's soo fit ❤🥰🤤
Great memories of many crossings on her , odd that she didn’t use her own power to move since they are still fitted
Great that........
Dear me how. Is this Paul Frost from Newcastle on tyne ?
nope
This can’t be the same Daffodil my grandmother took me on in 1968 or thereabouts from Southend pier - can it?!
No. This is Overchurch renamed.
no i think that was a different Daffodil all together. this was Royal Daffodil previously called Overchurch.
Quite emotional when it was joined by the Royal Iris.
Traveled on all ferries as a kid. Mountwood, Woodchurch, Royal Iris, Royal Daffodil… sure there was a fifth??
Egremont.
@ OH CHEERS!!
Have the engines been retained/mothballed. Or is she now without her own motive power?
all been ripped out, Engine, screws and even wiring
here is one of the engines coming out. ua-cam.com/video/yhlYZ7BOong/v-deo.html
@@veryhighguy sad, but I guess to be expected.
Why didn’t the ferry transport its own gangway and any other accessories?
that went ahead ready to be fitted back on
She has return back to Liverpool again
Would have been nice to see it move under it’s own steam but hey ho at least it floats and moves 😊
Is there a reason why it didn’t travel under its own power?
engine all stripped out and no screws any more. here is one engine coming out. ua-cam.com/video/yhlYZ7BOong/v-deo.html
Oddly enough, it has no engine.
Great video. The support tug work left a lot to be desired.
He was doing his best ,he couldn’t see where he was going 😐
Why not Royal anymore?
Mersey ferry own the right to use the Royal prefix
Because it's decommissioned
@@octaviussludberry9016 are Mersey ferry allowed to use it again.
Did the daffodil go to France on day trips in the 50s
no, there is comment below this one explaining that was a different one.
Would she be visible as you approach Birkenhead?
no you will not see from there unless you went up river a little bit more to around the belfast ferry terminal
@ thanks
Probably the last trip she will make for a long time we hope
Cracker video , so many happy memories
Her permanent home where she will in time be forgotten and bankrupted numerous owners before she's scrapped like every other boat thats not of significance 😂
lets hope not, Phil has stuck with this project through some trying times and he is determined to get it up and running. we are now at this point after 5 years and a pandemic. all i can say is well done phil and Josh who have kept the project alive. the goos thing is phil is dedicated to Liverpool and its history.
I hope not also as british industrial heritage seems to fade more by the years. I'm just generalising all the other videos of "saved" boats I've watched and read about over the years.
that is not the daffodil it is the mount wood a exe birkenhead ferry Sorry to see they did not give her old name back she at least deserve that She was a good boat in her own rights just goes to show you if mersy ferries had spent the money on her she could still be running on the river But the last i herd the mersy ferries are still looking for a rowing boat and a bunch of monks to replace her what a waste of a good working ferry boat she should be working on the river
just be pleased she has been saved 🙄
Not Mountwood it was formerly Overchurch
its actually the Overchurch but it was last in service on the Mersey as the Royal daffodil. The royal part has been retained by mersey ferries and i expect you will see it again.
And built on the Mersey at Cammell Laird’s
👍
Royal Iris scrap unfortunately.
Great move guys however, why didn’t the museum go for Royal Iris? Even the Mammoth floating crane? Because they were ripped off goo style by someone in Germany and Mike Starmers thought it was great to have the De Wadden. Idiot.
we still have Mammoth, Now called Lara 1 and as for the iris thats well beyond repair now. This was not the responsibility of the museum. This is a private venture
Mike Stammers, get it right. Also, the museums do not have the money - hence the De Wadden being broken up and no more additional vessels. It's very expensive.
@@octaviussludberry9016 I have got it right. I have his books and I live within 5mins walk from where he lived. Don’t try to correct me upstart.
@@Nansen1981 His name was Stammers, not Starmers, so no, you didn't get it right.
He also wasn't an idiot. He was one of the founders of Merseyside Maritime Museum and advocated for it for over 20 years.
No need for the insult either - upstart, really? I was just highlighting a mistake and the truth of why the museums can't maintain vessels. It's becoming increasingly difficult due to funding.
Also, having someone's books and living 5 minutes away from where they lived, doesn't make you an expert on museum decisions and collecting policies.
