Happy New Year everyone! Got new videos for all this month and next month! Stay tuned Also heard that this year is her last year running for a while, she is going into long term layup with an unknown future
@@thatguyfrommichigan Whats even more amazing is the feeling you get when you realize that there are 13 ships on the great lakes that are almost 300 feet longer then the Fitzgerald was.
Saw the same thing happen to the Manitowoc coming into Manistee a couple of years ago. Got stuck right between the pierheads. Took about 20 minutes of swinging the stern back and forth, but she got free and proceeded up the channel.
You might of caught the event that got her the yellow Kiel Strip. This was late December and pulled a light load of grain back down after arriving Jan 8th she was laid up in Sarnia, Ontario awaiting repairs... Never went out this season and watched as they pulled her off under power of two tugs upbound to Soo for scrap on Oct. 8th. Wounder if suffer some sort of structural damage and they decided cost wasn't worth the repairs to 78 year out 15k ton vessel.
She is one if not thee oldest laker on the great lakes so her life has ran its course. My sister lives in Sarnia and I got to see her back in the spring and into the summer before they towed it away to be scrapped. The old Pelee Island ferry is at the same place and going to be scrapped from running aground so many times I guess and that ferry was built in the late 80's
Yeah, nothing beats watching a freighter run aground. The damage and work necessary to get them going again, has gotta be the best part. Good eye Paul.
@@R.U.1.2. When i watched that ship in the Holland channel it was a show. Turning a lake boat in the tight space of the channel with bow thrusters was fascinating to watch.
I have been watching ship cams for 2 years now so don't know why YT took so long in suggesting this video. I grew up in W. Mich and I have never seen a ship like this in Holland (though I did see one in Grand Haven once) so this is pretty cool. I could swear I saw this ship on the Port Huron ship cam just a few days ago? -no?
I’ve seen lots of these videos of these vessels going from one calamity to another and nearly all of the ships show loads of marks along the side’s looking like they’ve been bounced from one side of the dock to the other
Thinking back to that time, the ship had to make the turn at the same place my ship did. The Holland channel has a dog leg turn in it which makes navigating it difficult. PS my parents told me many times DO NOT GO NEAR THE CHANNEL! Did I listen to them at the age of 10? NO.
That is odd. The chart says there is 18 feet in the entrance channel of Holland Harbor. Draft marks at the bow show Mississiagi is drawing 24 feet. Dredged it's own channel, I guess.
I do not believe she was aground or in any danger of actually being aground. I believe she was merely stopped to reposition the bow to get out of the lock. If you watch closely you can see the port bow thruster pushing her bow to the starbord.
Someone here has commented something similar to what you said and I see how you think that. (Video doesn't show this well) is that when see stoped its because she hit a sand bar that was pussed in from the storm the day before. Also (not sure if I got it on video) is that see was moving the rudder left and right to "wiggel" the ship out. She did get a bit close to the wall but when see got unstuck, she ugged the right side of the cannal to miss the sand bar. They also had a barg come out and remove it. I go to Holland a lot and have seen a good amount of ships come here, she took the same line as all the others did. She just had a sand bar in her way. Sorry for the long message but hopefully this makes sense.
Repowered with a Cat 3612 diesel. They retained the package boilers to provide steam energy to operate the deck winches which is why you see water vapor coming from the side vents.
I don't think she ran aground. It was too close to the south wall to make the turn in the channel. Reversed engines and the bow thrusters were kicking up the sand while she repositioned herself in the channel.
She didn't, (can't see it on camera) but she was pushing in sand as well and the canal has not been dredged out in a few months and with the past storms, filled the canal with sand and she got suck coming in. I can see how you think that but no. I've seen ships come in here before and can tell you, she ran aground. Other ships get just as close and make it in, she was just unlucky and ran aground.
@@thatguyfrommichigan Dad and two grandfathers worked Lake Michigan out of Milwaukee, and my older brother sailed Second Mate in the Merchant Marine, now retired after nearly 40 years combined service in the Navy and merchant shipping... You might say we're all wet. 😀
I try to but it won't, I have tried to go frame by frame but it makes it worse. I do agree with you on that. I also am looking into a bit that can zoom in more seeing it doesn't zoom in much and that might help with that. Thank you for the suggestion though

I was there at the same time as you were
@@freighterfans9916 Ohh cool, a lot of people where there on that cloudy day. Was interesting watching her get unstuck
@@thatguyfrommichigan Sent to scrapyard recently.
@@dalel3608 yup, up in the Soo
Rusted, weathered, and aging, she is still one big bad beautiful boat!
Beautiful gentle giant. ❤️ I say thank you for all your years of service on the big lakes.
She is beautiful
Great looking ship!
Unfortunate that she is no more. These classic lake boats are becoming fewer and fewer.
It was a sad thing to hear about. The mighty ships are getting old and harder to keep up
Good video good travels keep it up cheers 😅
Time to dredge the canal. 🛥️⛴️
So interesting to see modern SATCOM equipment next to old mushroom and full bend ventilators. An accurate electrical schematic probably doesn't exist.
Beautiful home in the background.

Amazing how long those ships are. I bet the Fitz was something to see in the day.
Ohh yea, they are a lot bigger than you think. The Fitz was most definitely a cool site to see
@@thatguyfrommichigan Whats even more amazing is the feeling you get when you realize that there are 13 ships on the great lakes that are almost 300 feet longer then the Fitzgerald was.
100 feet longer than this ship. It was biggest till 1968
These captains are amazing too.
Yes they are

Not her firsr time then
the sides of those ships take a beating, must be kinda cool to see these things up close in your area.
Yup, they are beat up. It's cool seeing them but most are getting scrapped and not seeing them anymore
Thank you for this, from that girl from Michigan.
You're welcome. Glad you enjoyed it
Place sure looks familiar...this around Holland....yes ? Making me miss Michigan !
Holland hasn't changed much, just more people

Watched a different laker run aground 65 years ago. Lots of good memories

One last thought...this laker is steam powered like the one I watched. A very rare sight now days

She's Def aground
When did you shoot this? She is currently laid up in Sarnia Ontario waiting to be towed for scrap.
This was originaly recorded in December of 2020 but uploaded in January of 2021
Ooof. That sounded expensive
She got lucky, no damage
Def aground but showing the ship back n forth makes you dizzy ffs, it's so long.. Cool

Time to dredge the canal.
Yup, luckily Holland has 2 dredgers
Looks like it just got dredged, lotsa sand in the water....

Yup
Lumbering giant!
We.Are.Farmers. (bum ba dum dum bum bum bum)
Lol
Oops, forgot to dredge the channel last summer!
Well, a storm went through the day before and puahed a lot of sand in
Amazing to see. Where is this canal? I can't believe a ship built in 1940's is still on the water!
This is in Holland Michigan. Sadly she is to be scraped soon. She is in long term layup as of now
There were lake boats built in the 1890's still sailing in the 1980's. Fresh water doesn't dissolve steel into rust nearly as fast as salt water.
