This Macbook has no backlight due to a common F'up - pin 1 of the LCD cable is bent. Pin 1 is for the LCD backlight. The board's current sensing circuit on backlight output will notice that pin 1 is touching the connector housing itself, shorted to ground, and not send power through to the circuit. Bending the pin back fixed the problem.
At Apple, this issue would have cost the customer $1200. You might not believe me, which is why we have it all on tape. :)

The 'scam' is not directly related to that guy at the beginning who was telling the reporter they would need to replace $1100 worth of components, he's only doing what the company has hired and trained him to do. The 'scam' lies with the company itself purposefully making it harder for people to repair their devices so that they have no other option than to go to company owned stores where the employees have been trained to charge them exorbitant prices without checking for common issues that might arise with their devices.
He didn't use a certified genuine iTweezers to bend the pin back so now the whole computer is beyond repair

@@TaSwavo I see a lot of people against universal health care until they get charged 200k for an injury in a car accident or a heart attack, which they pay 15 000 per year of private insurance, which bail out on them the moment they are asked to pay back. Then they don't have the money to sue the insurance company and end up bankrupt losing their houses.
But it would cost them 30$ to 7 000$ per year for universal healthcare, the rich pay more so the poorer can have the right to live.
Yeah, maybe it sucks to have 30 000#$of your 200 000$ salary going directly into healthcare you aren't using, but it's also about remembering when you were a kid and you had surgery that would cost over 30k but you were covered for free or when you were a student at 20 years old and you were only paying 300$ per year for healthcare, another 1000$ for a full year education and you got free medication for an infection after an unfortunate accident.
We keep talking about going green. Think about how much waste would be spared if people could replace their own batteries or processors instead of having to throw out the entire motherboard!

It's about being able to repair your phone so when something does fail, you can keep it 5 or 6 or even 7 years because you can fix it yourself with aftermarket parts. Instead of going to apple after two years and them saying, "Your phone is two years old. We can't fix it. You have to get a new phone now." That puts a consumer in a bad spot where they buy a new phone after a year or two not because they want to, but because they have to.

The fact they worked very hard to close the loops that allow customers to find repair alternatives, shows you how profitable the practice is for them.

The devices are made to die after some time. I owned 2 iphone 6s.
I had an old iPod Touch 4th Gen and my mother had an iPhone 3GS. On both devices the home button stopped working within a year. Amazing premium Apple engineering and quality.
My old Nokia 6260 slide at that time had all buttons working and a better camera (5MP Carl Zeiss lens) with flash while my mother's iPhone 3GS had a poor quality 3.2MP camera with no flash.

Then it hit me, and I realized how stupid I was.
The only reason apple stock has kept on increasing in value is because of this sort of anti consumer shit, forcing you to buy the latest and greatest product while locking you into their ecosystem. One of the best examples is how Samsung has an app for its galaxy buds both on the google play store AND apple app store, so you aren't locked to using a samsung device, you can use them on any android AND iphone. MEANWHILE apple's airpods are a PITA to use on anything other than apple products. ever wonder why they make these things so easy to use? it's so that they can prey on the people that know the least about technology and they can lure them in to these expensive repairs.

If the products are damaged, no matter if its liquid or not, they should be replaced.
He meant that the liquid indicator turned red which means that a fair amount of liquid entered the chasis and even if the screen damage wasn't because of the liquid damage, they still have to do the appropriate procedures just in case that liquid did damage something inside and would cause short circuit in the components

I went through much the same thing on my 2018 MacBook Pro.. Battery died, Apple said I needed to replace the logic board, and top case. Total price, $1190 including labor. I took it to another shop, and they replaced the battery for less than $200 including labor. It still works just fine today.

Honestly, at this point, upgrading to this brand new Corolla XS Max is probably the better option. Only costs $200,000. Either 64 horsepower, or for $100,000 more you can have the 128 horsepower or 256 HP one? -Comes with an adapter to fill up your gas- oh no, lol that only came with the Corolla 7 Plus.

My window fell off the track one time. I had the money so I just took it to the closet mechanic. They said 45 bucks since it wouldn't take that long. I thought it was a little much but hey it's probably not worth it to them unless they charge that much. I drop it off come back after work guy says 200 bucks. "We had to replace the motor" mother fucker the motor was still working. I got it down a little and they did actually put a new motor in the door for the window. But still it's fucked.

As much as I hate Apple, you gotta understand that the guy from Apple explicitly stated at the beginning of this that Apple does not do partial repairs, which is what the guy Louis did. They only have solutions that involve replacing entire parts, and their OEM parts happen to be prohibitively expensive. It's not fraud nor is it illegal because they are extremely up front about this policy when you bring them a device, and it is little different than taking your car to the dealership for repairs. It was legit like the first thing out the guy's mouth, and when CBC asked for an alternative, he didn't lie and say that it couldn't be done for cheaper, only that they had no cheaper solutions.
This one was the most straight forward, easy to digest, well put together video I've ever seen on this topic. This video needs to be liked and commented into infamy. Far beyond viral.

they make it easy for apple to deny warranty claims.
I used to work for T-Mobile in retail. Many times phones would go out with the watermarks already pink instead of white. When management is quizzed we were told to just ignore it. These were brand new phones straight from the manufacturer. Come to find out those water mark indicators will turn pink/red in humidity withuot any real contact to aliquid.

I remember taking in mac for repair around time this video came out. Unrelated didn't actual see this video then but is comical how accurate this was to experience. I had to pay a arm and leg for computer less than a year old to get fixed. Best of all at the very end of handing it back they said it was technically still faulty after repair and couldn't 100% fix it. So I paid all this money for something they didn't know how to fix. I asked what happens if same problem happens again they said would have send it in again for same price.

These sensors indicate that there has been water on the tire, so we're going to have to replace the battery, all of the passenger seating, the air conditioner and the radio.
They claimed my customers macbook was badly corroded due to liquid damage, he told them it was never out of his studio and never near any source of liquid but they just insisted it was defo corroded due to liquid damage. They refused to even tell my customer what part/parts were corroded.... When i got the macbook to look at..it was bone dry no sign or any liquid or corrosion anywhere.... in fact im almost 100% confident they didnt even open the macbook. they dust inside had not been disturbed by fingers or screwdrivers. I would never trust them with any device. to many horror stories from customers

My little sister in law needed a new phone recently (she's 14, does will in school and is a bright kid), to teach her the value of money we got her to earn the money for the phone. I then sat down with her and went through all the phones in her budget, rather than get a brand new phone, with high specs, she insisted on a used, out of date, low spec iphone. Because all the girls in school have iphones.

Actually, many companies would benefit from the sale of spare parts as a side part of their business and also it would kill off the illegal market for spare parts anyway as fake parts would have to complete against genuine parts that would be much lower in cost.
Plus, better aftercare services would improve the chances of brand loyalty and for new customers who are willing to change because of that. (I had my iPhone fixed by a 3rd party (screen for about 600 bucks) (a new phone would cost me 4k) and another repair cost about 1/3 the price of a new one for both water and damage to the motherboard but didn’t go through because the phone was already obsolete.

It's never a good idea to bring anything that's malfunctioning to a person whose job is to sell you a new one. Always keep that in mind not just for computers but phones, cars, anything.

Yes they did. And you should thank them for it. If you know anything about physics behind lithium-ion battery, you should know that chemicals decay over time.
When you battery drops to 80% of its chemicals level, it can no longer support peak activity. So you have performance manager available that makes your phone to process one task at the time, which does slow it down.
I see people every day who don’t use it and their phone just shuts down unexpectedly because battery can’t provide enough power.
Apple, at least, has stores where you can replace the battery same day, in an hour, and walk away. Good luck finding support for Google Pixel ... all they give you is FAQ from which you have to file a claim to be helped over mail.

Louis, I'm so dumb I went to the Genius Bar this past year to get a single key replaced on my MacBook (some dust got stuck under it probably and one of the securing pins popped). I have had zero experience repairing electronics. Guy told me it'd be about $500 or so for the fix. Stupid me I went out and bought another MacBook instead (it was for the kids' school) only to stumble across some repair sites to see I could do the fix myself for, on the high end, $10. Embarrassing, sure. But Apple is borderline criminal with not telling me that I could just consider a DIY fix. Fortunately, that did lead me to find your channel, and for that I'm truly grateful to learn about the "right to repair" movement and your fine work. Thanks for the great content.

Notice when the Apple representative was asked if there was a cheaper alternative, he didn't answer that question. Instead he just said that his proposed repair was close to the cost of a new computer.
He just wanted them to pay even more, that’s all. Profit profit profit :).

I’m guessing Apple isn’t too keen on repairing even their own products.
The water mark is a tough problem for us technicians. Although they could turn red without water spill, some times clients lie about dropping liquids. So a simple task becomes a nightmare when they come back after a few weeks saying that we broke their laptops and want warranty. In my shop we always disclose that we saw water damage. And we either bump up the price and fix damaged components or we refuse to work on the device. Unfortunately just doing for free as Louis suggested can set you to do a time consuming motherboard repair for free in the future.

Car manufacturers (and some repair shops) have done the same since quite a long time ago as well, by not telling the costumer the exact name or Part Number of a specific spare part... so the costumer is unable to buy it somewhere else or repair it easily.
When it’s within warranty, they will find the cheapest alternative (bending a pin back), when it’s out of warranty - weirdly, they can’t find that same cheap solution.

Warranty wouldn't cover water damage anyway, which includes humidity, which can damaged computer parts anyway. It is the consumers fault of they have left the computer in a humid room. It will be apples policy to not be able to just 'bend a pin and give it back'.

@@ftv8181 Unless the water indicators are so sensitive that they go off even in low humidity conditions. Also, the Genius at the apple store took the device in back to open it. Who is to say he didn't swab those indicators with a wet q-tip or paper towel? The consumer has no power here unless he demands the technician open the device in his presence, and even then, they can't control the potentially sketchy water indicators.
How many consumers would even know about the water indicators to know to look at them if it was opened up in front of them?
Here in Indonesia, at least in my city, most electronics will be opened in front of the customers. Even if they need specific tools, the customers can see the workplace.

I'm in UK and had similar prolem on my 2013 Macbook Pro.
Took it to local repairer who specialises in apple pc's and have been going ever since. He's upgraded memory a couple of times and put in replacement used screen after dropping it multiple times. Being an older model it is one of the reliable ones hence keeping it. Updating and increasing memory makes it as fast as any new pc. He has saved me a few thousand pounds to date. Usually needs servicing once every three years or so costing two or three hundred pounds...
+ for saying "charging nothing". I had the same spirit in my small tech shack. Rather fix it, no big deal, customers pleased, spreads the word. same for dusting out PC / Notebooks, was always a courtesy. Wish i could work at a place like urs again.

I had an iPad mini that got “stuck” during an update. I brought it to Apple and the cost to replace was more than buying a new iPad. I brought it to sprint and the manager there reset it for free. 🤔

Might recommend the Lenovo Yoga 3. It has an extra battery in the conveniently shaped for easy holding cylinder on the side. The battery lasts for ages. Plus it's not very expensive at about $150-225.
I love having my 8 inch to carry around & my 10 inch for watching UA-cam & movies.
I don't even use my computer anymore.

I was at an Apple store once and a desperate women came in stating her iPhone was "sick" and it "had the bug 😩" just then we heard the sound of an impersonated siren. It was one of the geniuses at the bar 😌. As he circled around continuing his emergency siren emote another genius came out from the back with a little ambulance that arrived to the scene.
The back doors were thrust open, and the woman's phone was strapped to the stretcher before being loaded back into the ambulance to be rushed into the back room. It was quite the scene.

Apple told me my Macbook Pro needed a new logic board and would cost $800 to fix. It was 1 bad ram stick I fixed myself for $45.

Well, they realized people can change ram stick on their own. So they dediced to solder to the motherboard. "Think different"
I took my wife's iPhone (outside of warranty) into Apple to have the screen replaced - the home button stopped working.. The phone had been in an otterbox since the day she bought it.. they found that there was a structural defect in the phone that caused the issue. And given it still looked like brand new they gave her a NEW replacement of the same model iPhone for *free*. Didn't even charge me the screen replacement fee. I'm all about the right to repair.. but this is stupidly anti-apple. yea OK.. there was a simple fix for the MBP at the beginning of this video .. but the "geniuses" are just kids doing their job.. they see a water indicator they assume water was spilled in the computer..
EXACT same thing happened with my imac. Told me it was a $1200 fix, got it done at a local computer shop for $220

Hey Louise, Thanks for the good fight. A lot of people appreciate what you've done. I've worked on Apple products and they're notorious for things like this covered on this video. Apple is horrible with their portable devices and their desktop products where they make it very difficult if not almost impossible to open them up using non standard screws and snap fit housing where when you try to open them up you can easily damage the casing. Other brands do the same things with their laptops and mobile devices too although not as much with their desktop products... usually. I think right to repair legislation should include easily openable designs for qualified persons not necessarily for average Joe where they could further damage the product or hurt themselves if they get into it easily. It also should cover most if not all parts to be easily repairable or replaceable. Expendable items such battery should be replaceable by the customers themselves.

Interesting to find out how that pin got bent if it is supposed to be plugged in without any movement since the laptop was built. Unless somebody manipulated the connector and bent the the pin by accident or otherwise!

@@Kiwi-ICU-RN they aren't saying you should be able to whole build a car for cheaper than the manufacturer from spare parts, just that to replace a spark plug you shouldn't need to spend 1000's or tens of 1000's for something so simple.
Ame happened to me when the camera wouldn't focus. They told me I had to replace my $1,200 phone. I took it to a repair center and paid $59 with a 1 year repair warrantee. Worked like brand new.
