UA-cam could have hundreds of competitors and the same problems would still happen, because we are tied to the digital land, we can't migrate our accounts and content across platforms. I'm a lawyer. My advice also is if you receive a demand letter with a period to comply. Don't feel pressured to follow that timeline. That period is just a number that a lawyer pulled up his ass and has no legal basis or effect if not followed.
When legal teams send out abusive letters that are clearly just an attempt at legal bullying and not well-founded arguments with merit, they should be liable for paying large fines to the targets of their legal bullying.
If there was a specific legal issue, I think the letter would be specific about it. From _this_ letter, I gather the specific issue is something _the data that may be gathered with UA-cam API_ *is* the specific concern, and *they are afraid* to be _specific_ about the nature of the data, _perhaps_ because it would be damaging to reputation or market?

You nailed it perfectly on why I have refused to pay for UA-cam. I love the content on UA-cam but youtube have absolutely no respect for those who use their platform. You are paying for content that has to be made in accordance with their ridiculous ad friendly standards. So, what am I paying for? Worse content? Absolutely not.
I support you, and I don't think anybody should pay. But at the same time, if everybody started paying and they were able to scrap ads, wouldn't the service be better? I find UA-cam isn't smart enough to understand my various interests, so with this sub channel I watch tech, trading news, etc., etc., on another I produce more content for example. I switched between these on an airplane and suddenly, unless I connected to the internet, not possible on this flight, they apologized, I was not going to be able to watch anything I downloaded. My heart dropped like you wouldn't believe. This is literally how I deal with flying. I watched an inflight movie... enjoyed myself reasonably, but got none of the research I'm usually doing done so I wasted my time and it relatively felt horrible. Most of my experiences are fine, but this SUUUUCKED.
UA-cam’s download policy is BS. I download a lot of videos to watch in my down time when I work in remote areas with no service and I run into this unavailable without internet BS way to often.
There are other apps that facilitate downloads. Many seem to operate from China where they cannot agree to the TOS on a service banned in their country. Apps from China do not give two shakes about rules, TOS terms, or even copyright laws.
But if you were to say, use a third party downloader, that just gives you the files, for free, would that work for you? There's not only a bunch of websites that do it for you, but there's even programs, like yt-dlp, etc. Hell, even VLC will let you download a youtube video.
Wish UA-cam would say which terms of service are being broken, and provide an example. The UA-cam letter does not have actionable details. It is like receiving a ticket from a traffic cop that says "Drive Better".
They claim that by giving out details on exactly what is or is not allowed, it would allow people to "game" the system. The idea is fundamentally absurd - it presumes that the natural state of EVERYONE is to be in violation, and NOT committing violations is somehow dishonest or shady behavior, that strips the policy enforcer of rightful authority to act.

The letter used "please" a lot and not "You are ordered to..." Also, the letter was not a summons or subpoena. You are right that this is subtle threats, kind of like, "Nice shop you got here. Be a shame if something happened to it."

@@steamerSama UA-cam is paying zero to the content creators. Any pennies paid out come from advertisers. So it is actually UA-cam's platform monopoly which is profiting from creators, most of whom earn little to nothing from their labour.
The youtube premium download issue is exactly why I stopped paying a subscription to YT Premium and Spotify!! I go on the road a lot outside of cell service. Multiple times I've had Spotify completely remove my downloads (well within the 30 day download expiration limit) for no reason while I am out. I have youtube premium yelling at me to connect to the internet to use my downloads fully defeating the purpose. I got fed up and ended up ripping all my liked songs on both platforms and throwing the mp3's into my phone.
Yeah the other issue is you pay but have the videos are just ads themselves. And then within the videos there's endless self-promotion, sponsored bits etc. so you're really only removing a fraction of the ads when you pay 13 bucks a month or whatever it is
Friggin' UA-cam Podcasts app was the same damned thing. I would think I was downloading my podcasts to my phone, and it would still buffer and stop when I'd lose connection.
fun fact, the PSP and PSvita had a means to get around an always online connection. You payed for their service and you could access your games anywhere on the go, the licenses were timed and sure you couldn't always just play the game, a simple connection to the store after the expiration timer (most games I owned were a year) would renew that licenses again so it can be used offline again. Steam does something similar with the steam deck as I've never had to connect online with it once I installed the game.

Louis, really enjoy the content as a 62yr old Aussie. I too have had annoying AI responses from eBay and PayPal regarding an iPhone sold to me as new and 7 months later l discover it was actually a refurbished iPhone. ( A repairman confirmed the phone was refurbished). I asked my seller for a full refund and was refused saying it was not eBay policy and when l submitted complaints to eBay and PayPal the AI response was disappointing with no support even though I had fraudulently been sold a used phone. Enough of my troubles keep up the good work pushing back.

I have the same problem, people accusing me of deleting their comments and I never even seen them. Not in spam either, just gone. And the ones that are in spam, are something like "nice video, loved the premiere. See you on Monday!". I have to filter thru 300-500 comments every day, just to fish out those innocent comments from spam.
Nothing encourages engagement like the uncertainty if the essay you're writing about how the video you just watched has put you in a philosophical mood is going to be immediately deleted or not, let alone if anyone will read and relate to what you're writing.

Software developers hold the real power in the world. I've maintained for several years that Daylight Savings Time (DST) is one of the worst ideas anyone has ever come up with. DST can be eliminated by waiting for time to normalize, wait a month, and then quietly _delete_ DST handling code from all major OSes and libraries. When people go to change the time on their clocks, they'll discover that DST has been permanently deleted. Poof. No more DST. Changing times on clocks twice a year causes innumerable software failures...twice a year. DST is a plague on humanity but software developers can correct this problem.
Yeah, Google (and UA-cam) was one of the rare mega-corporation that I respected in the past, for a few reasons... But in the last 5-10 years all that respect went completely down the drain. The censorship on UA-cam, especially in the comment section, is really out of control. Sometimes here now it just feels like if I was living in a dictatorship like China or Russia. That's not normal... A few years ago they started censoring anything that would look slightly like an insult between users, but now anything you write can be censored for absolutely no reason! I'm now regularly verifying my comments with a second account and probably between around 10% or 20% of my comments are not showing up to other people. (Depending on the subject and length of the comment.) I'm talking about comments that doesn't contain anything controversial, insults, urls or anything like that. I had hope this could change back to how it was 10 years ago but I know the odds for this to be happening are pretty much none. Knowing how the system works now, I'll have to be extremely lucky if I can post this without having to do a dozen of modifications... lol
They don't want to be specific, so they can get you from something completely different if you go to court, going like: oh, this? No, that letter was mistakenly written, we're getting you for this other thing instead...
I'm regularly banned on UA-cam for allegedly violating their harassment policy. The most harassing thing I have said is that UA-cam is liable for the harm caused by their pushing misinformation. My nephew died from sHLH after the jab, he was 22. My spouse had shingles, seizure and myocarditis after the jab. My daughter developed heart problems after the jab (now on beta blockers and being evaluated for POTS). My mother developed heart problems after the jab (now on beta blockers). My cousin developed heart problems after the jab. So I'm very interested in the misinformation UA-cam has pushed.
Good luck to YT if this goes to court. No judge is going to accept a blanket accusation letter on its face. At Discovery the opposition can subpoena YT for specifics.

The way I see it, the more we develop technology, especially for communication, the more corporations strive to slow down and hinder progress in exchange for profits. We are slowly going backwards because of corporate greed.
On certain fronts that's true, but it's also true that on others the contrary happens, AI is facing more backlash from the general population rather than from companies (or at least that's what I've seen so far). Everyone just cares more about themselves rather than general progress, sadly.

I confirm. Recently I was in a comment "battle" with some user and to my surprise - I couldn't answer his disrespectful misinformation, DESPITE my answer wasn't disrespectful and was based on a law. UA-cam blocked EVERY message I tried to send in response to that.

Or it has a url or something that looks like a url, such as trying to cite a US law site or a government site. There have been cases where I check to see my comment is removed within seconds of posting, consistently. Where I have to keep on guessing as to what part of my comment led to it's auto-removal from the comments section. Worse yet, it's always like a shadow removal. I look on my side, it's there. Refresh, it's there. Go into incognito, it's not there.

This world revolves around hard labor does not pay off but crime does. And streaming services have more or less forgotten that they only exist because they're marginally less annoying than pirating, and they're really pushing that border.
The problem is that streaming came to be owned and run by the same shenanigans that run cable TV, bringing all those detestable business practices with them: cutting backroom deals resulting in disappearing titles, treating customers as money to be pilfered (hiking prices), and (soon to come) booting customers off once the Chinese communist style social credit system is put in place. These are all signs of business chiefs being so out of touch with their customers that they're willing to attack them, and in many cases are doing so. It's not just social media doing this. Banks are doing it.
Only reason I ever made use of Netflix was the desire for higher bitrate video streaming. Now that they no longer offer 90% of the content I enjoy, and keep cancelling projects I would be interested in, I cancelled my sub.

there are programs like InAudible that allow you to decrypt their proprietary files into mp3 or m4b. there are also a few communities like MAM that people upload said decryptions to, and also have a ton of the content that audible has since removed.
I once paid for UA-cam Premium. I was offered three features of interest: ad-free, family sharing, and pre-caching (misleadingly labelled downloads). *UA-cam kept showing me ads, claimed my mother wasn't my family, and removed the pre-caching feature.* For background, years before they offered premium, I had asked them for the option to buy the ad slots shown to me. They refused, and more than quadrupled the ads, apparently convinced they can't sell ad-free without first making their ads completely insufferable.

The problem here is that the state shouldn't be doing this stuff, because they definitely can't do anything efficiently and are doomed to bureaucracy...but the state's job, which it fails to do, is to monitor and limit the abusive 'anti-free market' policies of monopolies and oligopolies. The job of government should not be to provide services that others can deliver, but to ensure the even playing field and prevent the most egregious of corporate business practices. Sadly, government can't even do that right.

@@erinmac4750That's just kind of how legalese sounds. It isn't written by an individual, but by the entire team, so it sounds controlled and generic. It's lawyers. They are ultra controlled in what they say, (and especially for something like this, you have to make absolutely sure it is legally enforceable to the highest extent you can) It's more that AI was trained off of documents like this than vice versa, due to that unnaturally controlled and careful wording.

Ive been shadow banned on the comments so many times. Some were dicey, I'll admit, but some were completely benign. I would go: "Where the hell is my comment? I just oosted it like 10 mins, and now it's gone in the reply chain." I'm sick of garbage arbitrary censorship, and wishywashy "terms of service."

I make comments and never look back. Whether here or on Reddit or wherever. If someone replies, I get the notification but I never look at them. I literally do not care what anyone may think about what I posted. Whatever I posted was already my final word on it and I never look back. By not caring whatsoever what anyone thinks, I feel like I have reached a zen state of just existing as I please. It's relaxing.
They only care about their content creators for how much money they bring them, if you're a big enough channel or personality you can easily crush their bottom line because if one platform bans you, you can find another and literally bring over millions. Its already happened with tons of creators all across platforms. Also they find nothing wrong with you breaking terms of service if you're that large until either the government or mass complaints are involved that could hurt their bottom line.
This video has cemeted this man as a legend in my mind. I stand with you, I refuse to pay for a dis-service. Especially when old features become pay walled.

d) demonstrated to customers they were possible, got a open-source wheelchair non-profit funded two hundred thousand dollars
e) Got a wheelchair right to repair bill passed in Colorado so people don't have to wait three to six months to be able to move again.

I find UA-cam isn't smart enough to understand my various interests, so with this sub channel I watch tech, trading news, etc., etc., on another I produce more content for example.
I switched between these on an airplane and suddenly, unless I connected to the internet, not possible on this flight, they apologized, I was not going to be able to watch anything I downloaded. My heart dropped like you wouldn't believe. This is literally how I deal with flying. I watched an inflight movie... enjoyed myself reasonably, but got none of the research I'm usually doing done so I wasted my time and it relatively felt horrible.
Most of my experiences are fine, but this SUUUUCKED.
UA-cam’s download policy is BS. I download a lot of videos to watch in my down time when I work in remote areas with no service and I run into this unavailable without internet BS way to often.
There are other apps that facilitate downloads. Many seem to operate from China where they cannot agree to the TOS on a service banned in their country. Apps from China do not give two shakes about rules, TOS terms, or even copyright laws.
JDownloader 2 is a great piece of software. Downloads from sites that make is so hard to download stuff from their website.

TBH as a business UA-cam can decide how it's content can be distributed because, they are doing the heavy lifting of storing trillions of hours of video, streaming all their content pretty seamlessly, with multiple data centers across the world. Grayjay is hitchhiking on UA-cam amongst other platforms.

The youtube premium download issue is exactly why I stopped paying a subscription to YT Premium and Spotify!! I go on the road a lot outside of cell service. Multiple times I've had Spotify completely remove my downloads (well within the 30 day download expiration limit) for no reason while I am out. I have youtube premium yelling at me to connect to the internet to use my downloads fully defeating the purpose. I got fed up and ended up ripping all my liked songs on both platforms and throwing the mp3's into my phone.
Yeah the other issue is you pay but have the videos are just ads themselves. And then within the videos there's endless self-promotion, sponsored bits etc. so you're really only removing a fraction of the ads when you pay 13 bucks a month or whatever it is
Friggin' UA-cam Podcasts app was the same damned thing. I would think I was downloading my podcasts to my phone, and it would still buffer and stop when I'd lose connection.
fun fact, the PSP and PSvita had a means to get around an always online connection. You payed for their service and you could access your games anywhere on the go, the licenses were timed and sure you couldn't always just play the game, a simple connection to the store after the expiration timer (most games I owned were a year) would renew that licenses again so it can be used offline again. Steam does something similar with the steam deck as I've never had to connect online with it once I installed the game.

I too have had annoying AI responses from eBay and PayPal regarding an iPhone sold to me as new and 7 months later l discover it was actually a refurbished iPhone. ( A repairman confirmed the phone was refurbished). I asked my seller for a full refund and was refused saying it was not eBay policy and when l submitted complaints to eBay and PayPal the AI response was disappointing with no support even though I had fraudulently been sold a used phone. Enough of my troubles keep up the good work pushing back.

I have the same problem, people accusing me of deleting their comments and I never even seen them. Not in spam either, just gone. And the ones that are in spam, are something like "nice video, loved the premiere. See you on Monday!". I have to filter thru 300-500 comments every day, just to fish out those innocent comments from spam.
My comments have been getting shadow banned it seems recently, they'll show up in my post history but won't appear on the page, its awesome

DST can be eliminated by waiting for time to normalize, wait a month, and then quietly _delete_ DST handling code from all major OSes and libraries. When people go to change the time on their clocks, they'll discover that DST has been permanently deleted. Poof. No more DST. Changing times on clocks twice a year causes innumerable software failures...twice a year. DST is a plague on humanity but software developers can correct this problem.

Yeah, Google (and UA-cam) was one of the rare mega-corporation that I respected in the past, for a few reasons... But in the last 5-10 years all that respect went completely down the drain. The censorship on UA-cam, especially in the comment section, is really out of control. Sometimes here now it just feels like if I was living in a dictatorship like China or Russia. That's not normal...
A few years ago they started censoring anything that would look slightly like an insult between users, but now anything you write can be censored for absolutely no reason! I'm now regularly verifying my comments with a second account and probably between around 10% or 20% of my comments are not showing up to other people. (Depending on the subject and length of the comment.) I'm talking about comments that doesn't contain anything controversial, insults, urls or anything like that.
I had hope this could change back to how it was 10 years ago but I know the odds for this to be happening are pretty much none. Knowing how the system works now, I'll have to be extremely lucky if I can post this without having to do a dozen of modifications... lol
Oh so even in the letters youtube sends they say you've violated our terms of service without providing any specifics lol.
They don't want to be specific, so they can get you from something completely different if you go to court, going like: oh, this? No, that letter was mistakenly written, we're getting you for this other thing instead...
I'm regularly banned on UA-cam for allegedly violating their harassment policy. The most harassing thing I have said is that UA-cam is liable for the harm caused by their pushing misinformation. My nephew died from sHLH after the jab, he was 22. My spouse had shingles, seizure and myocarditis after the jab. My daughter developed heart problems after the jab (now on beta blockers and being evaluated for POTS). My mother developed heart problems after the jab (now on beta blockers). My cousin developed heart problems after the jab. So I'm very interested in the misinformation UA-cam has pushed.

The way I see it, the more we develop technology, especially for communication, the more corporations strive to slow down and hinder progress in exchange for profits.
We are slowly going backwards because of corporate greed.
On certain fronts that's true, but it's also true that on others the contrary happens, AI is facing more backlash from the general population rather than from companies (or at least that's what I've seen so far).

Or it has a url or something that looks like a url, such as trying to cite a US law site or a government site. There have been cases where I check to see my comment is removed within seconds of posting, consistently. Where I have to keep on guessing as to what part of my comment led to it's auto-removal from the comments section. Worse yet, it's always like a shadow removal. I look on my side, it's there. Refresh, it's there. Go into incognito, it's not there.

The problem is that streaming came to be owned and run by the same shenanigans that run cable TV, bringing all those detestable business practices with them: cutting backroom deals resulting in disappearing titles, treating customers as money to be pilfered (hiking prices), and (soon to come) booting customers off once the Chinese communist style social credit system is put in place. These are all signs of business chiefs being so out of touch with their customers that they're willing to attack them, and in many cases are doing so. It's not just social media doing this. Banks are doing it.

there are programs like InAudible that allow you to decrypt their proprietary files into mp3 or m4b. there are also a few communities like MAM that people upload said decryptions to, and also have a ton of the content that audible has since removed.
I once paid for UA-cam Premium. I was offered three features of interest: ad-free, family sharing, and pre-caching (misleadingly labelled downloads).

For background, years before they offered premium, I had asked them for the option to buy the ad slots shown to me. They refused, and more than quadrupled the ads, apparently convinced they can't sell ad-free without first making their ads completely insufferable.

It's lawyers. They are ultra controlled in what they say, (and especially for something like this, you have to make absolutely sure it is legally enforceable to the highest extent you can)
It's more that AI was trained off of documents like this than vice versa, due to that unnaturally controlled and careful wording.
The truth is, if it was necessary to file a lawsuit you could still file a lawsuit naming the UA-cam legal team as the defendant.

Once a courtroom openly states that what your app is doing is okay, far more players will grow the balls to follow suit and take the power out of the hands of Googleschmirtz Evil Incorporated.
Sadly we'll never get a court to rule that the app is okay as the case will suddenly be dropped the moment things look like they are headed in that direction.

I don't really see much of difference between Grayjay connecting content creators and Google News connecting newspapers. I also remember that Google argued it was better for everybody when newspapers complained - yet Grayjay isn't better for everybody. Hmmm.

Piracy is inheritantly the distribution of previously paid goods. You're more than right to criticise the stance piracy reduces potential revenue for those who wouldn't pay for services regardless, but piracy is directly tied to theft. Borrowing a friend's CD isn't the same as burning 100 CDs and distributing them to everyone you know.
