This it the REAL "right to repair", and IMO, the way to do things instead of screaming at people or holding placard signs. Get people to find repair fun and interesting. They'll self select products & companies that align with their interests, and when they grow up, reject a culture of throwaway items. Really cool for Alex to take an interest in this!
I have a 13 inch MacBook air. , brought in 2014. Now recently it stops charging. When I plug the charging cable lights glows orange for like seconds then turn off. I thought it was a charger issue but then problem persist with new charger also. I took it to apple service centre, they said we need to replace mother board which will cost 690$ (50k in India currency) which is more then the new laptop. I searched online and somehow find a way to use that lapi. I disconnects the battery cable from mother baord and now using it while keep it on power constantly. I don't think it is a mother board problem bcz after disconnecting the battery cable it is usable. Can you please suggest what will be the possible cause for it.

apple is slowly turning into best buy its all about the bottom line. Something broke just get something new and spend new money. I agree strongly with being able to repair your personal gear after all its yours for gods sake. When will these huge companies realize that it's not always about the bottom line there are people out that enjoy fixing stuff and they should be able to too. I predict apple will crash soon and be a forgotten company.

The fact they claimed the GPU needed to be replaced in a machine that has no GPU says it all, Apple is only interested in getting that next $1500+ out of their customers. They have no interest in giving the customer a reliable service for a reasonable price.

Its annoying as well because macs are really good for graphical jobs like architecture and model building.
I am definitely not condoning Apple's practices, but technically it does have a GPU so it's more a play on words. It has an integrated GPU (part of the CPU) as opposed to a discrete GPU and they usually have both so it can switch between the two to save energy.

I've worked there and I and everyone else really wished they came up with another name other than "Genius Bar" because of the obvious accusations. The people aren't sales reps and aren't encouraged towards anything other than helping the customer to the best of their ability, the problems occur because you're dealing with staff paid about 30k annually so naturally you aren't getting advice from hardware technicians or anything like that, just honest workers with a base level of technical experience.
The training focuses on the most common issues so if something unusual outside of that happens like the issue in this video then you're going to be out of luck, in general the Apple philosophy is about satisfying 90% of the customers and the other 10% being extremely unhappy is fine, we had metrics much to this extent.
Honestly the moment you call your technicians "geniuses" all of the alarm bells go off.
When said geniuses can only fix your computer by changing every single part, my sarcasm enabler goes wild.

Not only does that computer not have a GPU, but if it _did_ have a GPU, it would be soldered to the motherboard. A motherboard replacement would already replace the GPU, so how is Apple out there trying to quote a motherboard replacement and a GPU replacement?!
The only possible defense would be if the cpu was socketed (not soldered), meaning the dGPU would be replaced (but also the CPU), and the motherboard, and the screen. But if the CPU is soldered and there is no MXM slot, then yes, it's a full-on scam if they charge someone on the bill for "GPU Replacement".
If a simple mouse fart is within the vicinity of your Apple the whole the system needs to be replaced.
They rely on the ignorance of the consumer.
@Serratus Anterior there are laptops with socketed CPU's and "socketed" GPU's :) You learn something every day! Look up "MXM 3.0b slot", that's what newer (even years old but still) laptops use. The idea is nice but on practical terms.. those cards are very expensive and upgrading is never worth it.

Dude. You're awesome. I remember the good old days of being an electronics tech in the 1990's. Techs who could understand schematics, troubleshoot, and repair with minimal down time and expense were at a premium. By the 2000's we had board replacement techs. I had completed my education and had stopped working as a tech as I moved on to working as an Engineer. Good techs were no longer valued by the corporate bean counters upstairs. Electronics "assemblies" were swapped out and scrapped or sent back to a far off land for repair. This was the beginning of the throw away era in my chosen profession. Things have never really been as good now that nobody knows anything anymore. Not to mention the lack of ethics in tech today.
Thanks for reminding me those good ol' 90s, at electronics tech school we were hand drawing the self designed PCBs, dipped in "hydrochloric acid
+hydrogen peroxide" bath to remove the unwanted copper. Once we have collectively done the transparent film UV light method to copy the circuit plan to the PCB just to see some "up to date" technology :D We were far more up to date on how to tune the "HBO decoder" in certain districts of Budapest (technically it was just a noise filter for analog broadcast, just needed to figure the actual interference signal that was unique to the cable company/district) and on how to cheat with the brand new phonecard system of the public street telephones. Same system has worked fine for a few years already in some luckier more developed countries here and there but in Hungary the next day we "write-protected" the chip simply by covering one connector with tape or nail paint so it was unlimited until the company upgraded their systems and "write protection" stopped working. Then came a multicard with eeprom containing 4 or 8 cards with dip switches so you could change to a new card when prev one was finished... then renew the chip.
My dad back in the very early 90's and even before that was great with tech, at most he did a evening course in electronics. I always remember how somehow without details of the board he took apart my ZX Spectrum that its tape deck had died, and modded it to take a audio input from a headphone jack. He also did small things like rather than pay expensive prices for drive belts for cd players he would use elastic bands. Point is he had a lot of self taught skills. Obviously hes now into his 70's and modern tech has surpassed him and he asks me for advice now on electronics but still hes far better at making home made small devices from components and such, again I remember him making a bug for a phone to transmit to our hi fi so he could record phone calls made to a company trying to rip us off in the early 90's too. I could never do something like that.
My mom taught me how to repair our tv back in the 80's but now that's useless info now..... Tv's don't have the big fuses bulbs anymore lmao
The same exact thing is happening to cars. Most new cars you have to take to the dealership where they will overcharged you because they have the special tools to work on those cars. In top of that the parts are becoming all cheap and throw away.
When electronic waste piles over the world, they start to make electronics repairable ...this already start in EU....they start to force by law all manufacturers to sell electronics that can be repaired ...

@@michaeldelyjah5696 nope, it has onboard graphics in the CPU. It has no dedicated GPU and you can't replace onboard graphics without replacing the CPU. They still lied about the laptop having a GPU.
@@Para1122 I didn't say ANYTHING about "dedicated GPU", you just added that. If the GPU is built into the CPU, you still have a GPU. It's called an integrated GPU. I hope you understand that you CANNOT have graphics without a graphics chip. Whether it's dedicated, integrated, or hybrid, YOU HAVE TO HAVE A GPU FOR GRAPHICS.
@@michaeldelyjah5696 Of course you can have graphics without a GPU. Just use the CPU and you are done... Has been done for years, but today in normal computers we use either a dedicated graphic slot in card or built in to the motherboard, the integrated one.

This is so cool! The customer being right there adds so much! Apple is messing with actual people, not just boards in a slot. Real people are being ripped off and we need to raise awareness for this crap.
True and don't get me wrong because it totally sucks, but at the same time... Nobody is forcing people to buy from Apple, so once you realize that Apple is screwing people over and constantly fighting independent repair, then no sane person would defend Apple, yet somehow there are people out there will stick up for Apple or simply brush people off as "haters" or whatever when you point out how awful Apple is as a company.

There need to be more stores like Mr. Rossmann's. The fact big industry is driving out these local mom and pop stores and you're forced to rely on big stores who have no concern for you or your neighborhood. I've known about this channel for a few years now and enjoy watching the repairs even though I'm no tech myself. You sir will be first on my list for any repair service. I was an Apple/Macintosh guy for 20 years going all the way back to my first Apple IIe and remained so until the mid 2000s. I finally had had enough with Apple when I wanted to upgrade my Macbook Pro from a wireless G to wireless N card. I went to an Apple store to buy the part and I was at the checkout ready to pay for the item. They then said they couldn't sell it to me because it had to be installed by a "professional". I told them not to worry about it, just sell it to me. They refused and said if I installed it myself I would void my warranty. I told them again not to worry about that as my warranty had already expired and they still wouldn't sell it to me. I ended up going online and buying it from a 3rd party and successfully installed it myself. Needless to say this was the straw that broke the camel's back and I became a PC guy. I can do whatever I want with my PC hardware without having some big corporate company telling me what I can and can't do with the equipment I own!

You should of walked in after buying the card and went to the counter and do the installation right in front of them without saying a word.
I was always pc guy, but when I start studing music production I realy need that macintosh, so I bough mac mini for the start, It was great machine until I burned all usb ports with bad printer, of corse fixing isnt possible so I bought crazy pc, and my friend installed hackintosh and from that thay i know that I never buy mac again 4,2ghz quad core 16gb ddr4 1080ti strix some crazy Republic Of gamer asus motherboard 500gb ssd samsung, I mean that configuration still doesnt exist in apple, maybe some stupid mac pro for 6000$ with soldered ram and cpu onboard... lol they realy have great os for music and video production so, use just their os 😊
@@milanmilicevic4618 gotta love a hackinstosh machine. I did my second one this year and I could not be happier, I've had 3 wonderful years of freedom dual booting Win and OSX and I can even run Linux. I will never buy an overpriced mac.

@Nick Name It's that they aren't intelligent enough (as geniuses.. all pun intended lol) to KNOW what could cause or what DID cause the problem. Most likely, they didn't even check the computer. Just ran a "diagnostic" check and realized they didn't know what to do next since it wasn't written down for them. Scamming with a pure lack of knowledge IN THEIR OWN DEPARTMENT.
I bought an MacBook Pro in 2010 $3000, within 45 days it stopped working with crazy lines on the screen, Was under warranty but the quote was $1000 the whole screen needed to be replaced. Even when I got it back all wrapped up the screws underneath it were not in properly. I sold it right away.
Not only did you fix this kid's mac for a fraction of the cost he would've had to paid, but you ALSO taught him something AND brought him on your stream. Rossman is the hero we've all needed.

Wow, I can disconnect the battery on my crappy $250.00 HP laptop without any tools at all! Takes literally 5 seconds. Have to do it about once a month though, haha

Being a New Yorker I think being a smooth talker to survive isn't a requirement but it does make life easier if you are trying to haggle prices down for any situation be it trying to land a reasonable price for an apartment or other essentials. :D But yes I do think that the kid seems well put together. Good on him and doubly good on Louis for showing him to not trust big corporations that sell warranties that don't last long enough to be of any use. For full disclosure I own one of those old Macbook pro that came with a built-in CD drive (matshita dvd-r) and it is still working fine with minor upgrades that would be a no-no with a warranty lol - I refuse to buy incremental upgrades of the Macbook that to me seem to be getting less and less friendly for those of us who enjoy tinkering with the insides. I'm going to see if I can stretch the lifespan of what I call "old reliable" to over to reach a decade ( at the moment it is 7 years old and still running smoothly with updates to the OS ). The only issue I've had is with the battery life.
