    Most kids grow up on watching cartoons. Thanks to my parents, I grew up listening to Gold City, The Cathedrals, The Kingsmen, etc... I was just a young little boy during the early 90's, but I had the privilege of seeing these groups in concert. SGM was a huge part of my chidhood and it still is today. Thank you newtz2000 for posting these videos!

    Gold City are a group started in the eighties that rose to the heights of Southern Gospel. The premium line up consisted of Tim Riley - Bass, Ivan Parker - Lead, Mike Le Fevre - Baritone, and Brian Free - Tenor. They really set the standard, along with The Cathedrals, for many years.

    I'm a firm believe that in many ways, the old ways are the best ways. It's like the hymn says. "My sin was old-fashioned, my guilt was old-fashioned, His Love was old-fashioned I know. And the way I was saved was the old-fashioned way through the Blood that makes whiter than snow."

    • @ronaldshank7589
      @ronaldshank7589 5 років тому +3

      Tim Riley never was a real, real, super-low Bass singer, but he didn't and doesn't have to be! You're definitely right! He has one of the best Bass singing voices in the world! Now into, I imagine, his early 70s, I'm guessing that he may have retired. But, until the day comes when he either takes his last breath, or Jesus comes back, don't ever count this guy out! Take a look at another Bass singer, Ray Dean Reese, of the Mighty Kingsmen Quartet! 80 years old, and, just like the Energizer Bunny...still going!!!

    • @Mark-sj3xb
      @Mark-sj3xb 3 роки тому +6

      Ronald Shank - are you serious? He’s not a super low bass? You’re way off on that. He is super low and super clear. I get so tired of people praising JD Sumner who does nothing but growl. Tim sings low and you can fully understand every word.

    One of, if the not the best quartets of all time

    • @wvob6752
      @wvob6752 4 роки тому

      I'd start with the Statesmen Quartet, Blackwood Brothers, original Prophets Quartet, Imperials Quartet, Stamps Quarter and these groups especially Statesmen Quarter set the standard for all quartets who have followed after them. Big Chief Wetherington with the Statesmen Quartet was known as the best bass singer in the world and no disrespect to Tim Riley or J.D. Sumner. Roy McNeil/McNeal was probably the best lead singer of his time and he sung with Prophets, Statesmen and Blackwood Brothers. Best tenor singer was Denver Crumpler with the Statesmen Quartet and Bill Baize with the Stamps who backed Elvis Presley and I'd have to add Brian Free. Later years Cathedral Quartet and Oakridge Boys.

    I should also mention... that I took a group of kids on a trip last year, and played this album in the van, and the kids actually enjoyed, and could NOT believe that the album was 15 years old... that is PROOF that they were ahead of their time, when young Christian teenagers will listen to it 15 years later.... I can garuntee they would NOT listen to 95% of the stuff that was recorded that long ago... it sounds too 'old' for them. ;)

    I couldn't agree with you more, although Ivan and Brian are comparable in many respects as tenors. However, the comment I agree with you most is about Tim and his low, vibrating bass notes. My wife and I saw Gold City live in concert at a church in Victorville,CA and he hit a note so low that, as a bass, I was totally in awe of, and which vibrating the glass windows of the building. Unbelievable!!!

    Yes... for about 5 years running, they couldn't be touched... they were bascially an 'all-star' quartet..... from the late '80's until 1993(when Brian Free and Ivan Parker left) there was no one that could touch them. P.S. They were SO far ahead of their time, the 'new' Gold City, is still using some of the soundtracks from this particular album(Pillars of Faith) at some of their concerts TODAY! Amazing really...

    Well, I see what you're saying, but I can't help but disagree with the presumption. Jesus actually was interested in the "old fashioned way." In a sense. He said "I come not to destroy the law, but to fulfill." We don't sacrifice goats, because the final sacrifice has come. That's not to say the old fashioned way was bad. Gal. 4:4 says He was made UNDER the law, the "old fashioned way." Yeah, he was interested, but he fulfilled it. But not all of "old ways" should be discarded.

  • @stevebilliter
    @stevebilliter 3 роки тому

    The song lyric said: "The son of the great I Am--referring to Jesus as the Son of God, or as the Son of the Father. That's incorrect theology, because Jesus IS the great I Am Himself--not the Son of such:
    John 8:58 Jesus said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, Before Abraham was, *I am.*
    Joh 8:59 Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the middle of them, and so passed by.

      @stevebilliter 3 роки тому

      @@newtz2000 Thanks my friend, I'm really into Bible theology and when I first heard that song lyric it just jumped right out at me.
      BTW, as a musician myself, were I to do that song, I would change the lyric to fit the Bible--if I knew who wrote the song I should contact that person with what I just posted. The Father, while God too like Jesus, is not the great I am according to Scripture. But retrospectively, it may be proper to also call the Father I am as well, but to say Jesus is only the Son of such is incorrect.
      All through the Old Testament, it was the Son of God who led Israel communicating with them in various ways. The Father only came physically down to earth at few and selected times. In the gross darkness covering Calvary the Father was there (from the spirit of prophecy) trying to comfort His Son--but Jesus hardly knew He was there, because the Father laid the sins of the world upon Him which is what killed the Lamb of God.
      Christ is also Michael the Archangel and the Angel of the Covenant in the Bible which some deny, but is easily provable.

    Back when Ivan Parker could sufficiently sing above middle C. It's painful listening to him try to hit the higher notes nowadays.
    Great song.

      +rebel7254 He is STILL the BEST, inside and out....This is an awesome song, and how you use it to also criticize...Well, you are wrong..I have been to many of his concerts, and he is as great now, as he was then! He is beloved by many, so don't criticize...He has the biggest heart, and love for the lord...And YES, he still can hit the high notes...

    I get a kick out of watching Gerald Wolf in the background... looks completely unimpressed. :)

    Not appropriate for a man to sing this. Who first saw Jesus rose? Not the disciples.
