Thirty years ago I got my newly sodded St Augustine looking amazing. Then June came and the grub worms ate the roots across the entire lawn. So I litteraly rolled that dead lawn up like an area rug. Disposed of it, then spread durasban across the lawn to wipe out those well fed grubbs. BTW, grubs are June Bug nymphs. Then I had new sod layed down and purchased a lawncare book. That book was an amazing resource. I have been awarded yard of the month many times over the past 30 years. Durasban (Chlorpyrifos ethy) used to be the golden ticket insecticide. Dursban was banned by the EPA around 2000-2001 because of concerns for the health of humans and wildlife. It even killed mosquitos, which are a problem on the gulf coast.
I sprinkle a single fistful of good homemade compost on any trouble spots (no matter what the trouble is) every time i cut. I dont kill clovers. I cut on the highest or second highest setting, and leave the clippings in the yard. I have the best lawn in my hood
That is the way to do it in Central Florida because when you have 4 inches of grass or more above it reduces the need for watering by half and cutting at 4 in if you have a thick healthy lush St Augustine lawn it will suppress the weeds as long as you keep it healthy and thriving
Watering daily in south Texas. We are going on almost three months with no rainfall. 2am-715am, 11 zones x 30 minutes each daily. Running my system off of two shallow wells. Grateful for these wells.

Wow, you are the YadFather of grass! My St. Augustine is so bad. I'm glad I found your channel to help me get my grass back to it's beautiful state. Thank you for the video!
I bought a new home in CA with an existing THICK st Augustine lawn. It is dark dark green and has done really well with zero irrigation. Just rainfall. It’s been green all year long. Never had any experience with this grass type but it seems much lower maintenance than everything else I see on UA-cam.
@@j.c.5016 I’m in North Orange County. It’s definitely gotten crispier over the summer but overall it’s still holding up pretty well. I’d say it’s more minimal irrigation now, not zero. It’s in the backyard so it gets less attention that my front lawn which is tall fescue
It is not low maintenance...yours is just super healthy so make sure you maintain it. Don't ignore it and think it'll stay that way on it's own. It's a heck of a lot easier to maintain it than to try to bring it back.
Thanks for the Texas shout-out. Texas is in a slight to extreme drought - big state - extreme is central Texas. But, Allyn, I think it's something beyond that. My St. Aug. used to grow insanely. I could easily mow 3 times a week 3-4 months out of the year - and that is with limited feeding and watering. I don't know - but it's something.
I recently did an experiment by cutting the long stolons that have rooted from the crown. If you apply fertilizer and water for the next few weeks it will establish independently and spread faster instead of having to get most of its nutrients from a distant crown. I'm not sure if this method is widely known. It forces the stolons to create a deeper root system completely independent from the original crown.
I'm glad you mentioned brown spots could be from nearby shrubs and trees that compete for water. I wonder if my shrubs and pine tree are hogging the water that contributes to problems in part of my lawn.
I'm south... southern hemisphere. Cherry tree is busy dropping leaves, but that means i can mow to break up the leaves. St Aug out the back, did my first top dress this season, bit of work due to access, but those areas look thicker and greener than all the areas i didn't top dress. Finally sat down and converted lb per 1,000sqft to metric as i have no idea how big 1,000sqft is. It's just under 100sqm, exactly my front lawn. I kept it going till xmas when i had surgery then just kept it alive. Here's 🍻 to my next season.
Dallas grass, Johnson grass and most of all crab grass are the hardest weeds to control. The back breaking job of pulling them out is the hardest work. A garden weasel or shovel are instrumental in getting the whole plant out.
I can definitely attest to what Allyn is saying about disease. I had some yellow patch in the yard. I applied a bit of fungicide to it and didn't seem to be working. Then I put my normal fert app down and 6 days later the yellow patch is almost all gone.
What state are you in if you don't mind me asking? Here in Southern Cali if you're in the desert like Palmdale or Palm Springs, forget having any kind of grass.

Downside of putting all the fertilizers on your lawn is that they inevitably end up in the gulf. Red tide, less clarity with each year, is it worth it?
Will top dressing help to jump start growth in St. Augustine? A few weeks ago, I put down fertilizer. Will repeat at the 8 week mark. I’m in zone 10a with very sandy soil. I have a few large areas/patches where it’s bare sand likely cause the irrigation doesn’t get everywhere due to some berms with a tall croton plant in the middle of the yard. I’m now watering those areas with an oscillating sprinkler three times a week. Should I top dress the bare areas?
Great tips. To me, if healthy, no lawn turf looks better than St. Augustine. I live on the Gulf Coast and had trouble with grubs last season. For my area, what month should I begin putting down insecticides to get in front of grubs?
Amazing content. Your videos have helped me better understand my grass. Question; do you ever apply topsoil to your st Augustine? I’ve read online if you do, use sand instead of soil. I didn’t see any of your videos address that.

You can use the same fertilizer for both. For weeds you can use Glyphosate on your ProVista (not on Floratam!) and a combination of products for Floratam. I like Celcius.
So you recommend fertilizer outside of spring is what I’m hearing? People keep telling me not to do that because of burning but you seem to suggest it’s not an issue for you.

Hey man my neighbor has St Augustine and he's been watering and fertilizing and cuts every week, but grass is a ft thick, He's never thatched it. It looks beautiful but it's crazy looking. What can he do?
I had a house built and St Augustine sod laid and a sprinkler system installed. Now my St Augustine keeps weaving more and more. Now the sprinkler heads are sitting so far under the lawn the heads are not rising enough to water properly. Am I letting the lawn base (stolons) get too high or do I just need to keep getting higher sprinkler heads?
Hey LCN! I moved my mower to the highest setting and have been mowing every week, yet I'm not actually cutting much of anything. My lawn doesn't seem to want to grow vertically. It looks over grown and is mixed with some weeds and cutting high isn't making it look much better. Should I mow lower for a bit to encourage growth?? It's St Aug btw and I'm in South Louisiana.
yes for sure you can mow lower as long as you are following the 1/3rd rule. You could have a dwarf variety of St Aug that just won't grow tall. The key is to always follow the 1/3 rule.
G'day Allyn how often to you mow your lawn year round? I have sir Walter buffalo which you guys call st Augustine.I live in qld Australia which be similar weather to florida
Each of the granular fertilizer from Yard Mastery has iron derived from iron oxide, except for Freedom. I am of the understanding that iron oxide is completely unavailable for plant uptake, so why not use the EDTA iron that is in Freedom? When I am buying anything other than Freedom, is my lawn (of a pH higher than 6) even getting any iron with an application?
Great videos! As a first time homeowner last year, I learned everything I needed to take care of my st Aug from your channel. Could you start a series about landscaping, and how to take care of shrubs and trees?
Quick question, I get spots that sink slowly over time around my home, amid the fast spread of weeds that blow in with our NWFL storms...I'm about to go in with a friend on some full dirt before long and wanted your opinion on filling it in; subsequently, I will need to grow grass. Suggestions/advice? I have a large palm to deal with and new gutter system to attend to as well, but they main yard itself tends to sink little divots that in a couple seasons become bigger and broader spread, which I have backfilled before then another spot nearby does it. I'm about 5 mi from the beachfront and sitting on about 25 ft or so of dirt before the aquifer so I imagine this a factor. Sprinkler system is also being repaired soon so I can automatically water. Thanks in advance!
I have a tone of straw looking blades in the lawn. It was new sod from ne construction home purchased in April of 2022. yes for sure you can mow lower as long as you are following the 1/3rd rule. You could have a dwarf variety of St Aug that just won't grow tall. The key is to always follow the 1/3 rule.
@@TheLawnCareNut perfect thanks! I'll get out there with a ruler and measure the grass like a lawn care nut haha! It's the only way!
G'day Allyn how often to you mow your lawn year round? I have sir Walter buffalo which you guys call st Augustine.I live in qld Australia which be similar weather to florida
What HOC do you recommend this time of year ?
Each of the granular fertilizer from Yard Mastery has iron derived from iron oxide, except for Freedom. I am of the understanding that iron oxide is completely unavailable for plant uptake, so why not use the EDTA iron that is in Freedom? When I am buying anything other than Freedom, is my lawn (of a pH higher than 6) even getting any iron with an application?
When applying the 7-0-0 do water in after application
No need. Just let it sit.
the weedcare guide you mention has the wrong link. Its all about dandelions only (north) north
Great video. How short would you suggest cutting a St Aug lawn in preparation to level it with a sand/topsoil mix?
i need to know the same thing
@@lifewithkashmeere I found the answer is, 2.5 inches.
Great videos! As a first time homeowner last year, I learned everything I needed to take care of my st Aug from your channel. Could you start a series about landscaping, and how to take care of shrubs and trees?
I will do some stuff about palms for sure!
@@TheLawnCareNut thanks so much!!! Looking forward your new content 👍
Love the Boogs shirt! Has he hit you up to help with his lawn yet?
No but I am hoping he will soon!
I have a tone of straw looking blades in the lawn. It was new sod from ne construction home purchased in April of 2022. I put down Scotts southern weed and feed bonus S two weeks ago and the grass got a little thicker and greener but the straw looking grass is still there. How do I fix this? Is the Scotts still working slowly or is there something else I should put down?
Hey man, I’ve got a pretty healthy St Augustine lawn here in Houston Texas but I’ve got weeds sprinkled in. I read your weed control but it’s all about dandelions. I don’t have dandelions. I’m looking for a week control / killer that I can spray on the entire lawn to keep everything except the st Augustine away and not damage the st Augustine. Does this exist or do I have to spot treat, again very healthy existing st Augustine lawn
IN LOUISIANA with St.Aug. temps in high 90degrees can I fertilize with nitrogennow and Iron also?
Do you put down flagship every 4 weeks?
yes I do here in the spring time.
Hey Al,
You mentioned in between apps of Flag Ship that you apply Greene charge. If you’re applying Flag Ship every 4-6 weeks, is it safe to say you’re applying Greene charge 2 weeks after that?
yes exactly correct.
Hard to watch you ripping that yard up😄!
Me too! I was cringing!
Is a lawn roller a good option for striping the lawn?
I was outa here in 5 seconds with that blasting overmodulated into. WHTH were you thinking?
Hi Lawn Care Nut,
I just got a house with a very thin lawn. It’s spring. So do I get it aerated now in spring? Or do I still wait for Fall.
Thanks Dave
How do I get rid of Bermuda grass that is invading and killing the St.Augustine?
sadly there is no way to do this other than to resod with ProVista.
Would putting rgs or humic 12 on new zoysia grass sod help or is that to much. I put starter fertilizer already
Yes those two at the low rates would be very helpful, the RGS expecially.
LCN you gonna get in trouble carrying those guns around 💪. You must be hitting the iron? Great video as always.
