  • What's the secret to a green St. Augustine lawn? We need to start not from the top down, but from the bottom up. That right!! A great looking lawn starts with healthy roots. And this starts with the right cultural practices.
    First is to water 1/2" 2-3 times per week. Then we have mowing. For St. Augustine, I recommend mowing as high as your mower will allow, preferably 4" or higher. St Aug is an ornamental type of grass that likes to be tall.
    And last is adding the right micronutrients. This will help stimulate proper root growth and drive those roots down deep into the soil.

    What works in one place won’t in another. Your county extension is an excellent resource for your own unique circumstances

    Question I live in New England do you think that'd be safe to put down Milorganite this spring?
    Also thank you for the video the more I know😊

      Any type of fert that is used should be determined by your soil tests. Milorganite is a great fert, but if your tests show high phosphorous and low potassium, Milo wouldn't be the best choice as it's normally 5-3-0 or 6-4-0. You'd be adding what your grass already has enough of. Choose the fert that has the best NPK for your lawn.

      That's a very broad question and subject to many variables. There's mowing height, sharpness of the blade, mowing frequency, water coverage, type of fertilizer and frequency of application, using products like RGS and Microgreene and their frequency and amounts, to name just a few.

      @thesuburbanhomenut1183 I'll try the fertilizer and see if that helps. Thanks!!!

    Do you use all three sprays or just pick one of the three?

    • @thesuburbanhomenut1183
      @thesuburbanhomenut1183  2 місяці тому

      Humic 12 and RGS can be used year round, while MicroGreene is good during the heavy growing season. If your grass goes dormant or slows down, no need for it. Thanks for watching.

    My Saint Augustine grass is pretty darn green but it just won’t grow vertically. What is the problem? had it for over a year and a half now and I think I’ve cut it maybe three or four times total

      Without seeing the lawn and knowing the amount of water you're putting down and how often, type of fert and weeding habits, etc.. it's a guessing game. I'd recommend getting your soil tested, then going from there. There could be many variables that are not known at the moment.

      Where do you live?

    • @elian222
      @elian222 Рік тому

      It's probably due to the cultivar or type of SA grass you have. For example, floritam SA grows very fast, especially when fertilized a lot of N. Conversely seville (which is a better suited SA type for less sunny lawns) grows far slower than floritam. And lastly, Scott's ProVista grows super slow - in fact, this was an intentionally genetically engineered attribute of ProVista so it would not need to be mowed/maintained as frequently.

    How often should I mow st augustine grass?

    • @thesuburbanhomenut1183
      @thesuburbanhomenut1183  Рік тому +1

      As needed. Mow as tall as you can, then for all subsequent mows, only remove the top 1/3 of the grass. In the Summer, you can expect to mow 2 times per week. Thanks for the question.

      It's great you only have to cut it once a week. I keep mine at 4" and it so green and healthy and grows so quickly I'm mowing every 3-4 days. I wish I could have a lesser grass and only mow every 7 days.
