Yep. It’s so tough for Conan’s side of it too. Hosts are rarely good on other talk shows. Watch Howard when he’s a guest elsewhere. He can’t handle it and overcompensates the entire time. Talks wayyyy too much.
I’ve watched this probably 100 times over the years. Thanks guys for uploading it officially and in HD at long last. Two of my all time favorites and what a great conversation.
Aww I love Sona! Some of the best things about Conan at TBS were his behind the scenes skits with his staff, particularly the ones featuring Sona playing up the long-suffering, yet sassy, assistant role perfectly. I especially loved the special they did, “Conan in Armenia” where Conan accompanied her on a trip there to help her connect with her Armenian heritage. Love the relationship those two have.
It's nice to see how both Dave and Conan can make each other legitimately laugh. That's how you know Dave respects Conan and Conan obviously has always looked up to Dave.
I truly believe everything happens for a reason. I’ve watched Conan since he started and the best version of Conan I’ve ever known was him on TBS. It was like he completely could just be himself and not care. Less restrictions and it was just amazing to watch. The remotes were hilarious. Conan without borders was iconic. That’s the Conan I like to see. And his podcast is fantastic! The tonight show was definitely made for a jimmy fallon type.
Fallon’ son Carson. I think the tonight show format will forever be in the shadow of Carson, which is why no one else measures up IN THAT FORMAT. All the great late night shows post-Carson did something different. Fallon does Carson’s format without Carson’s interview talent.
If you've never seen "Conan O'Brien Can't Stop", it's a great documentary about the time period right after Conan left The Tonight Show and went on his live tour. Conan even let them leave in some parts that made himself look bad, which he called himself out on in the DVD commentary, of course.
I watched it when it came out. I just remember thinking, damn, this guy was not built for the road. Never heard the commentary, but it's obvious what happened. Guy sat at a desk for almost 20 years then all of a sudden, he's deep into a tour. It was probably crazy stressful.
@@daveharttify good point. That and touring while being away from his family during an already stressful situation was probably rough. There was a scene, I think where he says "I don't wanna have to go meet 100 people" or something like that. In the commentary he starts criticizing himself and calling himself a whiner and saying "shut up Conan". lol
You can tell Letterman has total respect for O'Brien just by how much quality time he's giving him. I can't remember a single guest that gotten this kind of airtime. I met Conan once in my apartment building in NYC (why he was in my apartment building I have no idea), and I can only say that he was a nice and "real" as you see him here, not any of that "I'm a big star" BS that you expect from anyone else.
The idea of Consn making his last Tonight Shows cost NBC as nuch as possible was simple, juvilile, petty, and brilliant. The comedy of that idea wouldn’t have worked for anybody else, but it was perfection for Conan because the audience felt for Conan and was rigt there with him as though they were sticking it to NBC themselves.
Only thing that matters is the ratings. Johnny is first and Jay is second. Jay not as smart as Conan or Dave, but out works both of them and wins. Two sore losers crying in each others soup.
Wow, this was a really good interview. Letterman and Conan did not hold back on Leno, and talked about almost everything about the debacle, hahaha. It was great to see everyone support Conan back then. There will never be another comedian like Conan.
@@anulkaaw No, lol. I was referring to how he left network TV for the past 11 years, and last year he decided to retire from his late night TBS show for good.
Um, I think you're going a little overboard with the lavish praise here. His show tanked and that's why NBC replaced him. It was nothing personal, he got a show with the number one spot and it went to number three within months. So, you sort of have to take the personality out of it and take a look at the bottom line which is advertising dollars and kind of figure out that was the whole reason he lost the show. He didn't have it.
Not everyone saw it Conan's way. Bill Maher thought Conan and Letterman were acting like kids. Jerry Seinfeld sure didn't agree with Conan's decision to walk away from "The Tonight Show," either.
i think the freedom of TBS led to the freedom of the travels and the freedom of the podcast and how so many were soothed by it during and beyond the pandemic. So thankful Conan and team endured the difficult times so well.
I like that when Conan first glances over at Dave and then nods, it's like you can see him deciding to wait and defer to whatever bit or tangent Dave appears to have in mind. XD Conan has always been very respectful of Dave as a predecessor and as someone who went to bat for him back in the day.

Since Carson retired, _The Tonight Show_ hasn't been a career crowning glory for any host with integrity. Instead it's been a creative dead weight held down by its audience's lowest common denominator expectations and NBC's market share obsession. As painful as it was at the time, not getting the show was the best thing that happened to Letterman and Conan. Both were free to create their own distinct artistic legacies as opposed to Leno and Fallon who were perfectly happy to keep serving up bland predictable content for years.
IMHO, The spirit of the “Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” was given to David Letterman who took it to CBS and gave us the “Late Show”. Now that Letterman has retired I believe that spirit went to Jimmy Kimmel.
RE: "Since Carson retired, The Tonight Show hasn't been a career crowning glory for any host with integrity." But what did Jimmy Fallon ever do to anyone that shows a lack of integrity? RE: "...not getting the show was the best thing that happened to Letterman and Conan." There we agree, because *CBS* turned out to be a much better home for Dave than *NBC* was likely to ever be. Had Dave accepted *NBC's* last minute "Tonight Show" offer, it likely would've been him eventually getting the boot in favour of a younger host, and probably a lot sooner than they did it to Jay. As for Conan, he made the right decision, but too late. If he'd originally accepted one of the major offers he was getting for a show of his own at *ABC* or *FOX,* he might still be hosting a network talk show, and the entire "Tonight Show debacle" would've been averted. But he just didn't recognize that what *NBC* could do to Dave and Jay, they could just as easily do to him.
Apart from all the obvious stuff what I love about Conan is that he made SO MUCH money from the settlement, enough to never need to work again. Yet he didn't sit around. Toured everywhere during the non-compete clause and made history with his own show at TBS. LEGEND.
He had enough money BEFORE the Tonight Show to never need to work again. This was about pride and in a strange way, dignity. I mean, for it being a comedy show matter. 😆

This is such an amazing interview. Two comedic geniuses who headline late night television practically hosting a late night show together. They could pull funny out of a hat and I feel lucky to have witnessed them together. I would stay up to watch these two as a child and teenager. Late night just isn't the same with Craig Ferguson, Conan O'Brien and David Letterman off the air. It feels like late night television has regressed to an era pre Smothers Brothers. There's a reason why conan is so successful. Brilliant mind and great story teller. I could listen to him for hours
The way Dave just hangs back like a great rhythm section and lets Conan be his extraordinarily funny self is yet another testament to the fact that Letterman is the GOAT!
Yep. It’s so tough for Conan’s side of it too. Hosts are rarely good on other talk shows. Watch Howard when he’s a guest elsewhere. He can’t handle it and overcompensates the entire time. Talks wayyyy too much.
Johnny Carson is the GOAT. You had to be there.
@Peace2Umans he's great, but Conan is my favorite
I’ve watched this probably 100 times over the years. Thanks guys for uploading it officially and in HD at long last. Two of my all time favorites and what a great conversation.
So have I. It's a funny interview, so I have been re-watching it. So excited to see the better quality as well.

@@geoffok Lol but it still takes her being funny and charismatic to even be so prominent.
I love that this was genuinely difficult and Conan prevailed through it all…
It's nice to see how both Dave and Conan can make each other legitimately laugh. That's how you know Dave respects Conan and Conan obviously has always looked up to Dave.
Conan’s a class act and such a great storyteller
A raconteur we called 'em back in the Day.
I always loved how much Dave liked Conan
I truly believe everything happens for a reason. I’ve watched Conan since he started and the best version of Conan I’ve ever known was him on TBS. It was like he completely could just be himself and not care. Less restrictions and it was just amazing to watch. The remotes were hilarious. Conan without borders was iconic. That’s the Conan I like to see. And his podcast is fantastic!
The tonight show was definitely made for a jimmy fallon type.
Conan on tbs with all the Jordan Schlansky bits will always be top-tier Conan
Fallon’ son Carson. I think the tonight show format will forever be in the shadow of Carson, which is why no one else measures up IN THAT FORMAT. All the great late night shows post-Carson did something different. Fallon does Carson’s format without Carson’s interview talent.
Yeah, but on the other hand they had to kill off the masturbating bear when they changed shows. That guy was always being the best he could be...
AGREED!!! It was like the show was LITERALLY created for him!
But Jimmy Fallon is complete trash.
Been watching Conan since 1996. I was 10 and still I am amused till this day at 36..
If you've never seen "Conan O'Brien Can't Stop", it's a great documentary about the time period right after Conan left The Tonight Show and went on his live tour. Conan even let them leave in some parts that made himself look bad, which he called himself out on in the DVD commentary, of course.
thanks for this, I looked it up, and it's leaving Prime in about 10 days!
Conan is just one of my favourite people, full stop.
In the commentary he starts criticizing himself and calling himself a whiner and saying "shut up Conan". lol
@@apelpinoy thank you for pointing this out, I’m watching it right now before it goes away.
Conan was still clearly hurt by all that drama.
He will always be a legend in my books.
Went to tbs and done to Lopez what he said was done to him
Yup he rivals Letterman may yet surpass him
@@Mike-cv9rrConan was actually afraid that he’d repeat the cycle with Lopez, who ended calling the former and saying it was ok.
The awkward silence, and Conan & Dave both doing the Leno head waggle are priceless moments in late night.
These two legends doing simultaneous Leno impressions is and always will be a moment of television gold. 🏆👌😌
When Sona got him through this, she secured her job for life.
Hah yup! She can have all the Friends binges at work that she wants. Honestly though those two are a perfect together!
💯💯 they are the best

You can tell Letterman has total respect for O'Brien just by how much quality time he's giving him. I can't remember a single guest that gotten this kind of airtime. I met Conan once in my apartment building in NYC (why he was in my apartment building I have no idea), and I can only say that he was a nice and "real" as you see him here, not any of that "I'm a big star" BS that you expect from anyone else.
He did the same thing for Norm when Norm was fired from the weekend update
As a long time Conan fan, that final week and a half of Conan blistering Jay and NBC was the golden age of TV.
👍🏿
The idea of Consn making his last Tonight Shows cost NBC as nuch as possible was simple, juvilile, petty, and brilliant. The comedy of that idea wouldn’t have worked for anybody else, but it was perfection for Conan because the audience felt for Conan and was rigt there with him as though they were sticking it to NBC themselves.
Indeed it was, plus the birth of Team Coco with the fans camping outside of the Tonight Show studios to cheer him on.
One of the best talk show conversations ever. Great to see Dave genuinely enjoying it.
Two of the greatest late night personalities of all time. My two favorites. Fantastic interview.
Perfectly said.
I wanted to comment above but saw yours and realized I would just be copying; could not agree more.
2a and 2b below Johnny Carson.
Only thing that matters is the ratings. Johnny is first and Jay is second. Jay not as smart as Conan or Dave, but out works both of them and wins. Two sore losers crying in each others soup.
Conan is so clearly a wonderful dude: funny, humble, self-deprecating, and oh so proud of his sister! So sweet and sincere in every way.
@@derekprospero Nah you're delusional.
Wow, this was a really good interview. Letterman and Conan did not hold back on Leno, and talked about almost everything about the debacle, hahaha. It was great to see everyone support Conan back then. There will never be another comedian like Conan.
Wait, did he die?
I'm so happy to see this being uploaded in HD quality - this is a moment in television that should be preserved forever! Love COCO!
Conan is simply the best, witty and smart as hell.

@@Rnyargd Kimmel can't even shine Dave's creative shoes!
@@suprchickn7745 Dave would probably disagree with you
RE: "Since Carson retired, The Tonight Show hasn't been a career crowning glory for any host with integrity."
But what did Jimmy Fallon ever do to anyone that shows a lack of integrity?
RE: "...not getting the show was the best thing that happened to Letterman and Conan."
There we agree, because *CBS* turned out to be a much better home for Dave than *NBC* was likely to ever be.

He used that money to pay his staff who all just moved from NY to CA for TTS.

As jerry Seinfeld said of the situation: "if you're still on television then you're winning. Give it a try." But Conan wouldn't, and a lot of people lost their jobs. He owed them.

They could pull funny out of a hat and I feel lucky to have witnessed them together. I would stay up to watch these two as a child and teenager.
