    Only been using Maya a few months but have been dabbling in 3D modelling for years. And i just wanted to thank you for making such a good tutorial! Too often when a person is intimately familiar with a program they will go in to automode and skip key steps but I think you covered everything. Thanks!

      Is it easy to rig hair in Maya? I'm keeping in mind the parts I want to animate and not animate. Basically the hairstyle has half long and half really short hair.

    Great video, it's really helped me out! You shouldn't have to make a new curve for each strand right? Could you just duplicate the mesh and curve and use it as a different strand?

    • @GGPAnimationAndy
      @GGPAnimationAndy  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the comment, I'm glad this tutorial helped you.
      I suppose you probably could, but at the time when I was prototyping this, duplicating the curve and mesh was very buggy, and never guaranteed to work, the hair strand would disappear or behave in an erratic manner. That may be something that has been fixed since then (I was using Maya 2018 in this video and it could have been fixed in 2019/2020), so you could give it a shot, if it is still buggy you could delete the history once you are happy with the shape, then duplicate the curve and create a new mesh.

    • @zollo911
      @zollo911 4 роки тому

      @@GGPAnimationAndy I tried duplicate the curve and mesh but alas the curve is no longer attached to the mesh. unu I've tried deleting history and other thing but I just don;t think it works. I'm probably just going to make many strands because I want the easy move-ability that the curve gives to the strand.

    Hello. Thanks for the vid, it really helped me alot on my journey. One question tho: lattices. Tons of them. How to remove them without ruining the whole hairdo?

    • @GGPAnimationAndy
      @GGPAnimationAndy  4 роки тому +2

      You're welcome, glad it was useful.
      To get rid of the lattices you can do Edit -> Delete by type -> History, on the selected hair strands, this will clear the link between the mesh and the lattice (This might also delete the lattice, if it doesn't then you can delete these afterwards), be careful though as this will also un-link the hair strand from the curve as well, so only do this once you are 100% satisfied with the positioning of the strands.

    Thanks so much for this very useful tutorial. However, when I get to the point where I'm adjusting the scale curve, the points won't move for me. I'm not doing anything different than what you are to that point. Ideas??

      @GGPAnimationAndy  3 роки тому

      Hi Andy, Thanks for the comment.
      Hmm, the grid for the control curve should let you move the points, otherwise its a pointless feature, what version of Maya are you using?
      I didn't come across this issue back when I created this tutorial, is the grid greyed out all?
      Looking back through the video it may be something to do with the value's under the Mesh Scaling section of the curve warp ( 5:07 ), I get the feeling that there may be a specific setting for those values that may render adjustments to the curve un-noticeable.
      Unfortunately my knowledge would end there as I haven't used Maya in a few years now.

    how can i do the texture like yours? c:

    • @GGPAnimationAndy
      @GGPAnimationAndy  3 роки тому +2

      This character model was a placeholder that I put together using the Mixamo Fuse Character Creator program(which can be downloaded on Steam). The materials and textures in that software were designed specifically for Fuse using Substance and can be exported with your character as texture maps.
      The shader in Maya is a surface shader with the exported diffuse texture from Fuse as its colour, multiplied with a 2-tone toon shader ramp, and the result connected to the colour of another surface shader, to do this you need to use the hypershade window.
      Hope this helps, and thank you for the comment :D

      @@SpaceDuckQuack Ah right no worries, in 2018 you could use it right away.
      I haven't done any animation with hair strands created with this method, You can have a go and see, at the end of the day its the curves that are driving the position of the mesh, so adding handles to the control points of the curve might work, if all else fails you can do the traditional bone based method of rigging the hair.
      Glad you got it working though.

    • @GGPAnimationAndy
      @GGPAnimationAndy  4 роки тому

      To constrain the curve to the surface you need to make that surface live. To do this, make sure you select the surface first, then click the magnet icon above in the shelf (I do this at 0:31 in the video), when the surface is live the text box beside the magnet icon will change from "No Live Surface" to the name of your object. You should then be able to place your curve points constrained along the surface.
      Make sure to turn this off again before trying to adjust the curve's or it's control points' position, just click the magnet icon again.

    I was wondering...
    I'm currently trying to edit the polygon that makes up the hair strand without having it conform to the curve.
    Every time I try to drag vertices on the polygon itself it does weird things along the curve.
    Is there any way to 'un-wrap' or de-conform the polygon from the curve so it may be edited normally (while still retaining its curved state)?
    I'm fairly new the maya so apologies if my question sounds a little vague ^^'

    • @ZhaoP
      @ZhaoP 5 років тому

      Well, this is awkward haha, seems like I answered my own question
      After an hour of exploring I've found a workaround if anyone is interested:
      After curve wrapping your polygon to the CV curve, you can duplicate the polygon (not the curve) and it will become a polygon you can freely edit.
      However, if you wish to change the general curve of the polygon again, you will either have to manually drag vertices, faces, edges, etc. to the desired angle or curve wrap the polygon to the CV curve again.

    • @Nocthena
      @Nocthena 5 років тому +1

      The other way of doing this would be to select your polygon model (not the curve!) and under Edit>Delete by Type> History you can get rid of the node connection to any kind of deformers before. Careful with that one though, cause you can't undo this! Deleted is deleted. So only do this when you really want to get rid of it cause you're happy with where it is and only want to adjust a few vertices :)

    • @GGPAnimationAndy
      @GGPAnimationAndy  5 років тому

      @@ZhaoP Yep you are correct with this solution, however as Nocthena pointed out, you can delete the history (both have downsides but can be useful in certain contexts)

    • @GGPAnimationAndy

      Hi nathaly, thanks for the comment.
      Sorry to hear you're have trouble adjusting the scale curve, unfortunately this is not something I have come across so I'm not 100% on a fix for this, it has been some time since I last used Maya.
      I have suggested to another user (who has the same problem) that adjusting the values in the Mesh Scaling options of the curve warp (as seen at 5:07) may yield some results, as a certain combination of these values may result in the scale curve not adjusting the mesh properly, however that is just a theory and I can't test it myself.
      As for Curly toon style hair that you mentioned in your other comment, you could try creating a curve that spirals around and then curve warp to that, basically the mesh will conform to the length of the curve no matter the curve's shape, I hope this gives you some insight into the potential process for creating curly style hair strands/clumps.

      The curve warp tool should be in the deform tab when in the modelling workspace, if it is not, check that it has been loaded as a plugin from the plugins window (this has worked for other people).
      If my memory serves me correct, curve warp was introduced in Maya 2018, so if you have an earlier version than that, an update will be required.
