Nice reaction and analysis! This song was never released as a single. It is a more prog rock number. If you like fantasy songs, Queen has whole albums filled with fantasy songs, Queen does have a lot of heavier material as well, their best songs is not always the hits. The canon section is somewhat like religious indoctrination, it is almost like an uncomfortable repetition. It also sounds as if the voice is moving closer and closer. The tape delay was unique, there is 3 delays.
Brian May build these tape delays himself to create the sound, it was mostly used on his guitar, but on this occasion it was used for vocals. So Queen actually did this live as well, which worked quite well in a live setting. You could create this sound in a studio by doing a lot of overdubs, such as on Bohemian Rhapsody, but this is not something you would have heard live at the time. A Night At The Opera is full of studio experimentation, at the time this album was made, it was the most expensive album ever produced.
Nowadays people can just use digital eco to create a similar sound. Queen did not really do very long songs like a lot of bands at the time, The Prophet Song is their longest song. They were good at adding many different ideas and changes in one song.
Yes, it could have been shorter, but I understand the thinking process that went behind it.
I suggest you check out My Fairy King - Queen and The White Queen (As It Began) - Queen live at the Hammersmith Odeon 1975 (the live version is better then the studio version, which is something you often find with Queen), and The March Of The Black Queen. Songs such as My Fairy King and The March Of The Black Queen are precursors to Bohemian Rhapsody. All of these songs are fantasy themed. The whole Queen II album is basically a fantasy theme heavy prog rock type of album. And from Queen's later years, the song Innuendo is also known as Bohemian Rhapsody's little brother. It was actually a no.1 hit, but it was released the same year that Freddie Mercury died, so it has been somewhat forgotten, but it a great song.

I think harmonising with overdubbs gives a different sound to harmonising with delays though

Beautiful, the first time I heard this song, I really didn’t know what to think of it. But the more I listened to it, it made me realize how versatile and talented Queen was. The four of them together made some good in depth music. Not only bangers like We are the Champions or We will rock you. I hope you want to watch some live stuff. I suggest Stone Cold Crazy live at the Rainbow or White Queen live at the Odeon Hammersmith. Much bless!

I loved your reaction to this seldom reacted-to Queen song. I suggest The March of the Black Queen. It is the precursor to Bohemian Rhapsody with all the complexity and transitions and harmonies. And a very Freddie surprise at the end!

My favourite Queen track, closely followed by pretty much everything else..
For more reaction material I'd highly recommend Queen 2 , in my opinion their greatest album 👌

This can never be a hit since this never became a single. And that means the radios, back in ANOTO’s time of release, never played this. But I do agree with your opinion of this song. It took some time for this song to grow on me. Now it’s one of my favorites ever from Queen. They tend to get very experimental with their music and this is one of their most musically complex songs. You will never get bored when you dig deeper in their catalogue. 👍🏻

This is one of Brian's most complex songs, Freddie songs tended to be just just naturally very complex from a musical theory perspective.

This Song is far better then Bohemian Rhapsody :) Speaking from a Fan Perspective. Just because a Song is successful it doesn't mean it is "better". Look how many dumb Songs are super successful :) And especially with Queen... As being a Lifelong Fan today I like this Song the most, tomorrow that Song. It is insanely hard to choose compared to other Bands. On every Album with Freddie I liked at least 3 Songs. But in most Cases it weren't the big Hits.

The opening is a Japanese instrument called a Toy Koto. Which Brian is also playing. He is singing the opening lines of the first verse as well. Fred first line starts. I dreamed I saw on a moon lit stair. Small detail. But. The vocals on most Queen studio tracks are pretty interchangeable. Between Fred, Brian, & Roger. Within the songs themselves. People just expect to hear Fred. So. Most of the time. That is all they do hear. Also. Brian, & Roger. Usually sing lead on at least one song per album. Especially true of 1970s Queen.

If youve Never Listened to it before i would like to See you reacting to „The March of the Black Queen“. It is like an older sister of Bohemian Rhapsody

Yes! This will fulfill the "fantasy itch" and the transitions are great...you will not find it too long! And there is a surprise at the end!

My first album back in 76. So many great tracks on this piece of vinyl. Always loved the Prophets Song from the very first. Great to listen to on headphones as you get the full stereo swooping madness.

Absolutely an incredible song written by Brian. The production and instrumentation is so cutting edge and so elevated for rock at that time that I don't understand how this was not a huge hit for Queen. Perhaps it is a bit too technical, I don't know, but every time I listen to this song, I hear something new and I am once again properly impressed. I had to listen to this song a couple of times to actually appreciate it. The first time I listened I was in a terrible traffic jam and that cannon effect got to be so annoying that I had to turn it off but the more I listened to it them more I actually like it. Brian wanted to use that effect and he brought it to Freddie who really was intrigued with what he could do with it and pretty much ran with it. He did more of it than Brian had initially intended but it really does play into the piece once you listen a few times. I do believe this song is brilliant , technically and one of the best written songs by a rock group. Thank you for reacting to this outstanding composition and performance. I do understand your take on this song, though because that was my first take as well.

After my first listen of this song I had almost the exact same thoughts, especially regarding the length of the cannon. However, after having listened to it many times (probably hundreds), I can't imagine taking any of it out. I also had similar thoughts about Bo Rhap when I 1st heard it at 15 & now I would pitch a fit any 2 year old would be envious of if someone even suggested Bo Rhap be cut. 😉😁

The first time I heard this song I wasn’t sure what to make of it. But as I have listened to it more, it is now one of my favorites. I love the lyrics, too. If you are interested in reacting to more Queen, please consider Somebody to Love live at Montreal 1981 and Stone Cold Crazy, live at the Rainbow 1974. White Queen, live at Hammersmith Odeon 1975 is also excellent. All three of these songs are very different - no surprise since they were written by Queen.

Thanks for listening to this, "Ewok" -- it's been posited that this is Brian May's "rhapsody" -- I actually prefer it... Brian May is genius, of course.. (come here.. I hear you.. he was very experimental in the relay/echo sound) I hope to hear more of your reactions... P.S. on Queen's early albums, there was no space between songs.. so the end of this was leading straight into "Love of My Life"..
