As difficult as it has been for so many of us who love the mass and would like to avail ourselves of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, we remember the early Christian community and how they met in their homes. We recognize that the Church is not a building. It is us. We are the Church. We, as a married couple, are called to be and form a little church, a domestic church and we appreciate very much the efforts of our Bishops like Bishop Jose Gomez and so many others who have offered us the ability to celebrate Eucharist online . For us, living part of each year in the center of Mexico, it is wonderful to see Fr. Adolfo Guemez, L.C. celebrate Lauds, Mass and Holy Hours online and on Sundays, for us, it is wonderful to attend mass with our Bishop Jose Gomez as he celebrates mass at our Cathedral of our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles, California. How about being Grateful that we didn't have to make this very big decision? How about praying for our bishops instead of criticizing? I really really want to receive my JESUS in the blessed sacrament too. But I know HE knows what is going on, and knows how much I want to receive HIM sacramentally. Until the day I can, I trust HE will continue to come to me spiritually. Please my brothers and sisters let's continue to pray and repent for the many many times our JESUS was received without reverence and in a state of mortal sin. I'm with the Archbishop in more than one way. Firstly, I happen to agree with him. HOWEVER, it is my duty as a Catholic to support him and to follow his direction, despite my personal "need" to attend Mass and receive the Eucharist. It is my duty always, when speaking IN PUBLIC, to support him and the church so as to avoid scandal. Period. Now, I will be a "bad Catholic" and call out all the holy Catholics responding to this video in a negative way, putting their personal beliefs, ideas, and "needs", before everyone else; and putting their "wisdom" above that of an Archbishop of the Church the so strongly miss.
I don't understand these negative comments. To be PRO-LIFE also means taking precautions to preserve life, especially when it is preventable. I applaud the Archbishop for following medical science's recommendations, which can be viewed as God's gift via human intelligence. Faith and science should not be seen as opposing forces. In the meantime, "...go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."
The virus will not go away. This is a fact. The salvation of your sheep should be number 1 priority. People died yesterday and will die today and tomorrow regardless of what you do. Open the Church. Do Not Be Afraid!
This is the time when we need the Church the most. Delaying this is causing tremendous harm to the Faithful. You need to be brave now and be a real shepherd, not to hide away and keep us from the Lord. The Church is an essential service, and it has historically been there for people, WITH THE SACRAMENTS especially in times of illness and plague. Sadly you are losing the trust of many of the Faithful. While the online Masses are lovely, it is not the same. YOU priests get the Lord personally and we don't. That is hardly just or compassionate.
We as Catholics should always remember that going to church is more than an obligation it is a gift from our dear Lord. We should also remember that to be close to God we don't have to go any further than our own hearts because through our faith we know God is always with us. Also in this difficult time we should remember those in other parts of the world where God's faithful are not allowed to go to church but never lose faith because they carry His love with them always. I too miss going to mass but I am grateful I can still participate in the mass each week via television. I am also grateful to our church leaders for their wisdom and guidance. Christ would never close his arms to anyone neither should the church. “Mass online” doesn’t satisfy. Not even coming up with creative ways to provide us with sacraments like confession and others really hurts. I’ll be catholic until I die. There’s no way I’ll leave the Holy Eucharist because church clergy didn’t help me during this rough time. Christ provides even when his shepherd’s don’t. My prayers are always with you and for the entire Body of Christ.
There is no reason churches cannot be open for prayer. The cowardice and lack of leadership by Bishops and priests around the world is appalling. It’s enough to turn a Catholic into a Protestant. May God have mercy on the souls of these men!!!!

My hope with the following comments is not provoke division where there shouldn’t be or to defame any bishop. If we disagree, I pray it can be done with gentleness and reverence. What caused such a dramatic change in thinking - from not a whisper of doing anything previously to a complete lockdown - this flu season? In my opinion, churches are essential and should be prudently opened and the Sacraments celebrated. If we can go to Walmart, Dollar Tree, Home Depot, Rite Aid, grocery stores, airplanes, etc. together, we can also go to church. I understand the value of social distancing, wearing masks, cleaning, etc. These make it feasible to gather in a safe manner. How about creative ideas for our churches like outdoor services, or in car services? If a priest and penitent meet outdoors, wear masks and there is a barrier between them, is that not safe? Isn’t doing all we can to bring souls into a state of grace worth pursuing? I’m OK if seniors, folks with certain pre-existing condition, their care-givers and other folks who are for whatever reason uncomfortable refrain from attending church functions. With those people protected, other Catholics should be permitted to prudently celebrate the Sacraments. Personally, I feel there was an overreaction to the virus. I feel fear prompted our churches to be shutdown in too extreme a manner - not even Confession, Eucharisitc adoration, funerals, etc. were allowed and the doors were locked. A time of crisis is when the Church needs to be there for the people the most. I feel that encountering Jesus in the Eucharist (and other Sacraments) has a powerful impact on the recipient and the world at large. Could the increased evil we see in the world be the result of this Sacramental famine? Peace and God bless everyone.
Seems reasonable to be more cautious in the Los Angeles area given the current "COVID Reality" stats. At this point, however, there should at least be some sort of limited reopening plan. The Archdiocese covers three counties. There are 287 parishes within 5,413 square miles. Much of this area is deemed safe enough for the opening of most businesses and activities, provided they can do so with proper social distancing and sanitization. So, let's proceed with caution rather than stand frozen in fear.

Hopefully, through God's great Grace, we will be able to utilize the data we are given, and see why this virus has caused so many people to die of pneumonia in Los Angeles, but not near that rate in the rest of California. Hello, This message is for Archbishop Gomez. I am a concerned Catholic who has been Confirmed in the Church for nearly a decade now. I have reached out to Archbishop Gomez on numerous occasions. I want to know why we are re-opening our parochial schools so early when Los Angeles is the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic in the US. If you are uanble to provide information on this topic other than because the local government approved it, please let me know if you are providing additional income to the teachers and staff who are serving multiple 'classrooms' both in person and online or who are teaching multiple cohorts. Why are we, an organization devoted to the sanctity of life, playing it fast and loose with our educators and their support staff's lives? This does not seem to be in line with our teachings on the sanctity of life nor is it in line with our teachings toward community safety and growth. My spouse teaches second grade and I run a homeless shelter for children, our work is obviously improtant to us. How will you keep her safe and if she gets sick and is hurt or dies, what will you do?
This is yet another example of why so many Catholics have gone from respecting our bishops, to being disinterested in our bishops, to being angry with our bishops, and finally to holding our bishops (not all, but FAR too many) in utter contempt and disdain. 11 of the first 12 apostles were martyred for preaching the faith. With respect to the Bishops, we have to be obedient, however, they have surrendered their constitutional rights to worship to the state. The state has deprived us of this essential service. How can liquor stores and abortion clinics t be considered essential and not the church thses path months? The clergy has acted selfishly and hoarded the sacraments from the faithful, while they watch many of the faithful die without the sacraments.

I'm with the Archbishop in more than one way. Firstly, I happen to agree with him. HOWEVER, it is my duty as a Catholic to support him and to follow his direction, despite my personal "need" to attend Mass and receive the Eucharist. It is my duty always, when speaking IN PUBLIC, to support him and the church so as to avoid scandal. Period. Now, I will be a "bad Catholic" and call out all the holy Catholics responding to this video in a negative way, putting their personal beliefs, ideas, and "needs", before everyone else; and putting their "wisdom" above that of an Archbishop of the Church the so strongly miss.
I guess you would also always and dutifully support the likes of McCarrick and Weakland if you lived in their dioceses. Fair enough!

I don't understand these negative comments. To be PRO-LIFE also means taking precautions to preserve life, especially when it is preventable. I applaud the Archbishop for following medical science's recommendations, which can be viewed as God's gift via human intelligence. Faith and science should not be seen as opposing forces. In the meantime, "...go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."

This is the time when we need the Church the most. Delaying this is causing tremendous harm to the Faithful. You need to be brave now and be a real shepherd, not to hide away and keep us from the Lord. The Church is an essential service, and it has historically been there for people, WITH THE SACRAMENTS especially in times of illness and plague. Sadly you are losing the trust of many of the Faithful. While the online Masses are lovely, it is not the same. YOU priests get the Lord personally and we don't. That is hardly just or compassionate.
We as Catholics should always remember that going to church is more than an obligation it is a gift from our dear Lord. We should also remember that to be close to God we don't have to go any further than our own hearts because through our faith we know God is always with us. Also in this difficult time we should remember those in other parts of the world where God's faithful are not allowed to go to church but never lose faith because they carry His love with them always. I too miss going to mass but I am grateful I can still participate in the mass each week via television. I am also grateful to our church leaders for their wisdom and guidance. May God bless you and all those longing for the day it is safe to gather in our dear Lord's house again.

Christ would never close his arms to anyone neither should the church. “Mass online” doesn’t satisfy. Not even coming up with creative ways to provide us with sacraments like confession and others really hurts. I’ll be catholic until I die. There’s no way I’ll leave the Holy Eucharist because church clergy didn’t help me during this rough time. Christ provides even when his shepherd’s don’t. My prayers are always with you and for the entire Body of Christ.

My hope with the following comments is not provoke division where there shouldn’t be or to defame any bishop. If we disagree, I pray it can be done with gentleness and reverence.
What caused such a dramatic change in thinking - from not a whisper of doing anything previously to a complete lockdown - this flu season?
In my opinion, churches are essential and should be prudently opened and the Sacraments celebrated. If we can go to Walmart, Dollar Tree, Home Depot, Rite Aid, grocery stores, airplanes, etc. together, we can also go to church.
I understand the value of social distancing, wearing masks, cleaning, etc. These make it feasible to gather in a safe manner.
How about creative ideas for our churches like outdoor services, or in car services? If a priest and penitent meet outdoors, wear masks and there is a barrier between them, is that not safe? Isn’t doing all we can to bring souls into a state of grace worth pursuing?
I’m OK if seniors, folks with certain pre-existing condition, their care-givers and other folks who are for whatever reason uncomfortable refrain from attending church functions. With those people protected, other Catholics should be permitted to prudently celebrate the Sacraments.
Personally, I feel there was an overreaction to the virus. I feel fear prompted our churches to be shutdown in too extreme a manner - not even Confession, Eucharisitc adoration, funerals, etc. were allowed and the doors were locked.
A time of crisis is when the Church needs to be there for the people the most.
I feel that encountering Jesus in the Eucharist (and other Sacraments) has a powerful impact on the recipient and the world at large. Could the increased evil we see in the world be the result of this Sacramental famine?

Seems reasonable to be more cautious in the Los Angeles area given the current "COVID Reality" stats. At this point, however, there should at least be some sort of limited reopening plan. The Archdiocese covers three counties. There are 287 parishes within 5,413 square miles. Much of this area is deemed safe enough for the opening of most businesses and activities, provided they can do so with proper social distancing and sanitization. So, let's proceed with caution rather than stand frozen in fear.

Hopefully, through God's great Grace, we will be able to utilize the data we are given, and see why this virus has caused so many people to die of pneumonia in Los Angeles, but not near that rate in the rest of California. We must take great care of our vulnerable citizens, but at the same time realize, that most of the population is not at great risk. California is opening malls and restaurants. This message is for Archbishop Gomez. I am a concerned Catholic who has been Confirmed in the Church for nearly a decade now. I have reached out to Archbishop Gomez on numerous occasions. I want to know why we are re-opening our parochial schools so early when Los Angeles is the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic in the US. If you are uanble to provide information on this topic other than because the local government approved it, please let me know if you are providing additional income to the teachers and staff who are serving multiple 'classrooms' both in person and online or who are teaching multiple cohorts. Why are we, an organization devoted to the sanctity of life, playing it fast and loose with our educators and their support staff's lives? This does not seem to be in line with our teachings on the sanctity of life nor is it in line with our teachings toward community safety and growth. My spouse teaches second grade and I run a homeless shelter for children, our work is obviously improtant to us. How will you keep her safe and if she gets sick and is hurt or dies, what will you do?
This is yet another example of why so many Catholics have gone from respecting our bishops, to being disinterested in our bishops, to being angry with our bishops, and finally to holding our bishops (not all, but FAR too many) in utter contempt and disdain. 11 of the first 12 apostles were martyred for preaching the faith. Could you find 11 bishops in the entire USCCB who would die for the faith (or even just preach the faith with clarity and zeal regardless of the consequences) today? Our shepherds are Men Without Chests.

Once again the church rates a ‘fail’ with myself as a single woman.

The laws of Moses and the teachings of the old and new testament should be above science and laws and opinions of humans! Please realize how many catholics follow what church leaders tell them to do! So please understand when you have government leaders who put their hand on the bible when they take their oath of office, shouldn't the bishop and other church leaders tell all officials what commandments and scriptures teach! From every courtroom, and every government office those in public places of authority, have taken oaths to govern with the help of God! The commandments are written and the scriptures from book of Genesis to revelation is written, then why do church leaders allow government leaders to ignore the teachings of the bible when they make laws ? The USA has chosen to value thousands of other books above the bible! The public schools don't even study the bible! The public schools have shown children and the public it's ok to be premiscous from premiscous sex ,and it's gotten worse to where homosexuality is a chosen behavior in public and private!...graven images have been allowed, idols and many other teachings against the commandments! With respect to the Bishops, we have to be obedient, however, they have surrendered their constitutional rights to worship to the state. The state has deprived us of this essential service. How can liquor stores and abortion clinics t be considered essential and not the church thses path months? The clergy has acted selfishly and hoarded the sacraments from the faithful, while they watch many of the faithful die without the sacraments.
