Idiocracy touched on this idea in a satirical way, but it raises a genuine concern: without a well-informed, engaged, and critically thinking public, democratic systems flounder. Education provides not only knowledge but also the skills for critical thinking, empathy, and the ability to engage in constructive dialogue. A healthy democracy relies on people who can discern facts from misinformation, evaluate complex issues, and vote with a sense of collective responsibility. When education fails, it leaves people more vulnerable to manipulation and reduces their ability to hold leaders accountable.
Which is why Republicans have been starving teachers for decades. They know that if they calmly explained what their _real_ policies were, no one would vote for them, so they've embraced black propaganda and the "privatization" of ..well .. everything. You can't win with only the votes of the 1% which is their real constituency, so they've openly embraced blatant lies and corruption. Then they lucked into a more effective con man than even Reagan.
That's a misguided response. Yes, it's true that educational standards are dire in the US, but *more importantly* you need good candidates to win. The Democrats haven't produced good candidates for over ten years now.
54% of adult Americans have the reading level of a 10 year old and 21% are functioning illiterate.....79% of US adults have English literacy skills sufficient to complete tasks that require comparing and contrasting information, paraphrasing, and making low-level inferences. Strong Man Politics has proven yet again to override democracy. Julius Caesar, Napoleon, etc. People beg you to take their freedom away if you promise to fix all their problems. The point of a free democracy is for the people to work together to solve their own problems, not elect some wonder man to solve it all for you
Biden and the Democratic party brought this upon themselves by their lawfare and rhetoric against Trump that was just totally over the top and turned regular voters against people crying "Hitler". This result was predictable to people who were paying attention.

In my opinion, it’s not about sanewashing. Trump is the logical conclusion for a country whose “left party” out-fundraises the “right party” from Wall Street and the financial sector. Whose “left” party represents and is fully controlled by highly educated culturally liberal elites who live in their own bubble and advocate for incremental changes. They protect the establishment. The left have become the establishment. They’ve become the machine. They’ve become “the man”.

I'm scared for those who are different from me, and I'm scared for my friends who this will affect. I'm scared for the future of Ukraine, I'm scared for the women who will need (not want) an abortion and won't be able to get it, I'm scared for the people who will be harassed, assaulted, and even killed by the absolute crazies (there aren't just a ton, but it only takes a few) who feel vindicated by seeing Trump win because they see him as "one of us" and now feel that they can freely attack anyone they want because America is okay with that now. I'm not scared for myself, I'm scared for the people who are different from me, and I'm scared for the immediate future of this country.
I'm grateful I didn't throw up, because I hate doing that! But I feel a pang in the pit of my stomach and on the verge of tears. RFK has repeatedly stated that his position is not to ban vaccines but to promote information about their risks and side effects so that people (especially parents) can make informed decisions. America hasn't changed, it has been the same all along, with deep divisions and authoritarian tendencies. The only difference is that social media gave a louder voice to those that were kept in the shadows and edges of social norms, and with unrestrained freedom of speech, that just emboldened them. There is a good reason to why in Europe, most countries and constitutions have a more careful approach to free speech, because you know... Fascism and all crap that happened over here... Good luck, Murica!
Republicans under Bush and Reagan and even Nixon were always very careful to purposefully exclude racists and conspiracy theorists, as they felt they would poison the Republican ticket for moderates. Clearly not the case, in fact, it only made the Republican party more popular in some ways, which is disheartening.
Pretty accurate statement. America is going to TikTok itself into either an authoritarian shithole or a Balkanized shithole. If we stay on the current path, I feel that this country is going to break up to one degree or another. States like New York and California aren’t going to cooperate with shit like a national abortion ban.

To me the US has just become ugly. Its part of why i moved overseas, even though i come from a very deep rooted WASP type family. I suspect the US has some ugly times ahead, that would have been teue even without Trump. Hes just a symptom of the problem
Some other countries, like France and Germany, have also been facing similar rises in extreme anti-establishment parties. It's not just a US problem, unfortunately
Honestly, the US has always been ugly. All the repulsive things, misogyny, racism, etc, have always been there, at least under the surface if not on the surface. It was often just hidden under a facade of "The American Dream" idyllic image presented in the 50's and on. The US is very good at concealing its sins in the history books.
I guess I as a retired white (cat) lady will be fine. I have always considered Colorado my home, but now I fear for those citizens, *especially* those who voted Trump. People will die.
I was told by majority of Americans voting that I am not an American. My conservation, animal rights, care for things outside of myself - I am not an American because I don’t share the values of the Americans that would choose a sexual predator.
Conservation was considered a rich man's concern by the left until they realized it makes a great pretext for voiding property rights and instituting totalitarian government. It can be used to justify anything at all. Farm seizures, for example.
Those who voted for Hillary voted for a woman who helped her sexual predator husband publicly humiliate and destroy his accusers in the sight of the whole world. And if you are old enough to have voted for Bill Clinton, you were applauding them both.
It's easier to internalize "the bad guys won, most people just suck" than realize the truth, that everything is harsh and subjective. The future must be won. Look after yourself and your loved ones.
NYT… please acknowledge that our lack of a principled Left is a huge part of the reason. We could’ve been finishing Bernie’s 2nd term if people in your political class had taken him seriously.
It's completely delusional to think Bernie could've won the general election. At the ballot box Americans will always choose the economy first and they would've believed his policies would hurt the economy. But you're right that the left has a huge problem, it's just not that they're not principled enough. Their problem is that they've let themselves believe that right and wrong beliefs can be dictated by the collective and that they represent that collective. They thought they were fighting for the rights of the oppressed and anyone standing in the way must be a bigot. Being on the receiving end of that kind of treatment creates a very powerful emotional reaction against this perceived social exclusion and as it turns out the "bigots" are a clear majority. The left must rid itself of this thought policing if they ever want to win an election again.
Not just “taken him seriously,” but if the Democratic Party hadn’t systematically made sure he lost when the left base and most Democratic constituents would have loved to support him and what he represents. Can we admit the Democrats CONTINUE TO LOSE reliably, or maybe every other election at best, because they really are a moderate-right party and that appeals to neither the actual far right wing nor the actual left in the country. We need to make the Democratic Party ACTUALLY a left party going forward or just leave the party. If the Democratic Party can’t defeat Trump, why should people vote for them going forward?
The right has certainly showed us that what we normally think of as “principles” do not really matter. Revenge politics and the drive to get even. That seems to describe the MAGA movement. The USA definitely can no longer be called the leader of the free world. Still a super power, and now a dangerous one to the free world.
RFK will be in charge of national health, Gaetz in cabinet, Comer and Jordan elevated, it's a nightmare.....the dark ages are upon us, a pestilence has been unleashed, and fear stalks the land...must we go through THIS !!??
I used to think that until I entered (via family) the red bubble and I can assure you what you call the MSM is not listened to or watched at all - is a whole ecosystem of right wing and religious media. The MSM could have said much more against Trump but none of it would have reached the red bubble. I realised that there really are two America’s. This is where MTG is right and there is a need to redo the union with far more states rights and far less federal power. She was mocked on the left when she said that but I have come to see her point. It a red state wants to go full Gilead then let them, but blue states can transform into European style Liberal social democracies.
The hysterical reporting desensitized people to the point of disbelief. People seem to believe America is a lot worse off and dangerous than it really is, and that is because of the media and their work. When everything is sensationalized, then it’s pretty easy to believe nothing is, which is exactly what trump played into.

I wrote this in another comments section but it feels appropriate to paste it here: I am part of the 'old' left, i.e. the left that cares a lot about economic inequality rather than identity politics. I think the Dems need to look in the mirror. Rather than consider what 'we' think Trump is and how everyone knows this, we have to realize why 'they' would reject 'us'. Here's how it looks to me. The Dems rallied around a VP who was not elected in a primary to complain that democracy was under attack; she refused to distance herself from an unpopular president. In fact, she grouped together a coalition of the old neocons (the name Cheney looms large) with what I'll call the neoliberal Dems. It is these two coalitions that sold the working class out to corporations and to other countries (offshoring) for decades. Then look at the media. Trump poked a bear that made the elite jump into overdrive to support minorities and women - and we were right to do that. But the end result is that it looks like the Dems could care two wits about working-class men. And all of our programs, from SNL to Colbert and beyond (which I watch) just make fun of the one person (Trump) that 'they' feel is actually recognizing their plight. The fact he is a grifter is obvious. But Dems need to stop blaming Trump and racism and misogyny and realize that working-class people (yes, largely but not only white men) are a constituency, too. Until the Dems adopt a message more like Bernie Sanders - someone who turns away from the neoliberal coalition - the Dems will never reach these people. And why should they? For the neoliberal coalition (plus our involvement in wars, which sent working class kids to die) is what got us into this mess. It's time for the Dems to fire the gerontocracy. It's time for new leadership.
You miss the real point which is that for hundreds of years white men ran the show and they want it back. For example billionaire Peter Thiel who bankrolled Vance is quite open about restricting the franchise to ‘useful’ people and he has praised the early America where ‘we the people’ actually meant white property owning males, over the age of 35 and Christian. Statistician Nate Silver two months ago predicted a Trump win and listed 34 reasons. One is that all men (not just working class) have reacted. against the feeling (reality) that woke has deprived them of a guaranteed good job and it’s especially true among white men. They want to return to the day when work was a man’s world and the home the woman’s world. A couple weeks ago ProPublica ran an article on a PAC run by two TX oil billionaires who having made their billions are now pastors of fundamentalist evangelical churches and who espouse a policy of a terrifying mix of billionaire bro and fundamentalist evangelical. They are interviewed and in their PAC the entire leadership is male and when asked they quite openly say ‘a woman’s place is in the home’.
Very well said. Pushing aside Bernie in 2016 was a clear sign that USA is actually a plutocracy, where candidates are "vetted" by the elites before the elections.
I am shocked your comment doesn't have more likes. Instead all I'm getting from others is a sense of pearl clutching and performative distancing from the "idiocratic rabble". Why don't these neolibs and neocons look in the mirror and just admit they do not appeal to anyone working class or young? And I say this as someone who begrudgingly voted for Harris.
As a 19 year old first time voter, I can affirm that I was woefully disappointed by the age demographics I saw at the polls. I would say there may have been one person within 20 years of me in the sea of voters in line.
@@joelhenry5489 I'm offended you would make that statement while being inaccurate: "Based on the available information, it's not accurate to say that Generation X definitively gave Trump the most amount of his votes in the 2024 election. The search results provide mixed and sometimes conflicting information about Gen X's voting patterns, and there's no clear consensus on whether they were the "Trumpiest" generation."
I actually thought Harris was going to win. That America would never bow down to a dictator. The land of the free and the home of the brave has become the land of fear and intimidation.
It’s fascinating you believed she would win. She didn’t go through the primary process! She refused all interviews because why exactly? She chose a completely incompetent VP. Her nonsense about blaming Trump about the immigration problem was laughable. On what level would she win?

@@admiralrooster Corporate media center and center-left (relative to the US) has an obvious neoliberal establishment bias. It is not the result of conspiracy, but of incentives and culture. Fox news, on the one hand, has always found it profitable to stoke the flames of fear, hatred, and anger. The neoliberalism post-Reagan of the democratic party has had a long symbiosis with the corporate worlds of CNN, MSNBC, and the like despite the growing and obvious ineptitude of this worldview in the face of democratic system erosion, wealth inequality, and climate disaster. Civility politics, pretending compromise is always the correct approach (despite your opposition revealing itself to become only more and more incontrovertibly fascist), drawing false equivalences between the parties, pretending its just 'Trump bad' and not an issue of the party or culture, obfuscating the core class tensions, and presenting these choices 'neutrally' has the been their playbook for one or two decades too long, and it's obvious to everyone else it's a dead end with no actual solutions. The plot that has ultimately lost is this neoliberal fairytale, and the corporate media does indeed bear a great deal of blame for its perpetuation and suppression of actual (leftist) solutions. 2016 was not a fluke. Instead of heeding the warning, the Right has been left unopposed to capture and cultivate a twisted populist energy when no viable alternatives were presented to those 'tuning in'. Failing to manufacture consent, what remains is widespread discontent.

It grieves me that Christian Republicans are praising God for the outcome. One of my most ardent MAGA friends posted this morning: "I was reading Psalm 68 and the first four verses I read were, “Rise up, O God, and scatter your enemies. Let those who hate God run for their lives. Blow them away like smoke. Melt them like wax in a fire. Let the wicked perish in the presence of God. But let the godly rejoice. Let them be glad in God’s presence. Let them be filled with joy. Sing praises to God and to his name! Sing loud praises to him who rides the clouds. His name is the Lord- rejoice in his presence!” (Ps. 68:1-4) Wow, God through the night showed us exactly this in the morning in giving us and the world President Trump!" That is how Republicans view Democrats, as the enemy that hates God and need to be punished by God. It sickens me that they cannot see there are many Christian Democrats who love Jesus and strive to live like him. And it also shows us how Christian Republicans view Trump--as appointed, anointed, and blessed by God.
It’s nothing new, the US fundamentalist evangelical right have long talked of Trump as being ‘Gods anointed’ to ‘bring America to God’. Read the Wikipedia entry on Dominion Theology which is by far the dominant religious ideology in conservative US circles. It has ideas like the use of ‘Holy Violence’ to bring in Gods kingdom rule and to punish evil doers.

Can we please acknowledge that the two sides are working with different facts? From the Trump supporter’s’ perspectives there is no conflict between prioritizing democracy and voting for Trump because they believe he was legitimately re-elected in 2020 and Democracy was denied then. They do not believe he’s a fascist. They do believe the mainstream media is fundamentally biased towards the left. This isn’t about objective fact. It’s about two coalitions believing in mutually exclusive realities.
But the so called left in the USA is only socio-culturally left. The USA is mostly economically right-wing. The bias you think you see only a small part of the spectrum, socio-cultural. These socio-cultural are not the most important things. The economy takes precedence and it is all right-wing conservative. People are manipulated to believe that the socio-cultural is more important than the economics. By getting them to vote on the socio-cultural issues they inadvertently vote for right-wing economic policies. In other words they vote against their own economic benefit.
@ I don’t disagree with that. But it also doesn’t change the fact that there’s a crowd that thinks Fox is right-wing and a crowd that think Fox has sold out to the left-wing mainstream. These two crowds do not consume the same news and each believes 100% that the other is delusional. So that voter you speak of isn’t even hearing the message, let alone getting the information they would need to make an informed decision about how beneficial it would be for them. And if they do venture out of their bubble, they’re approaching it with the same skepticism an atheist has watching a documentary about a religious cult.

I think Biden won last time because he DIDN'T campaign. He WAS essentially locked in his basement, and it worked to his advantage. If Harris had had more time to campaign would it have made a difference? I don't know. But I do know that I blame the Dem Party for mucking this up (again) with the Biden nomination. We had assumed he could well be a one-time president when he won the first time. The party was too afraid to be bold.
The reason Biden didn't campaign is because he was having problems with his age already at that point and limiting his exposure worked to his advantage. Harris, unlike Biden, is a bad politician so over exposure and putting her in hostile interview settings would only make her make her look worse.
Arc of history that bends toward justice? Well, It’s going to be very difficult when humanity is at the very edge of the precipice …as there is not much room to bend anymore. Good luck to us all.
Picking fights with those who can help is why the left loses. Purity testing has value - it prevents the outrageously impure like Trump - but it has to be limited or we will just fight with our friends instead of those that seek to do us harm.
I'm at a loss for words to describe what happened today. There are two big mistakes that explain Trump's apparent victory. One, Biden should have honored his promise to be a "transitional president" and not sought a second term. Two, not having a primary and anointing Kamala Harris as his successor was ill advised. Democrats should have had a choice who their nominee would be. Well, it's too late and we'll have another four years of Trump. I'm really depressed. I can't believe we'll have a convicted felon for our president.
I agree with your first point. There would then have been a primary. But Biden didn't do that so what was Kamala Harris to do? She only had 100 days and ran a very good campaign. It is not her fault that the USA is misogynist and racist.
Despite both of those potentially valid points, did Democrats find those decisions so unforgivable to hand the country over to a team of fascists? If it’s as easy as that then the blame isn’t on the Biden or the Democratic Party, it’s on everyone who allowed nihilism to win, who allowed racism to win, who allowed sexism to win. Because in spite of Biden and the choice of Harris, the choice was still clear and easy to make, yet they chose silence or Trump.

Nauseous is an unconscious response .
Reflect on where the democratic party lost its way while you're bent over the toilet
Before all the "har har, lib tears" etc folks roll in, I understand how you feel. Thankfully my stomach is a tad stronger than that (throwing up is the worst), but I totally understand how you feel. Now is this going to affect me all that much? No, I'm a young white guy in Texas, I'm gonna be fine, but it's not about me.
My only hope is that Trump is as 'good' at not keeping his campaign promises as he was in 2016. However, with Project 2025 looming in the background, my hope is feeble at best.
Can't wait for RFK Jr. to make lots of great decisions about healthcare. Big win for anti-vaxxers and anti-science people in general. Speaking of anti-science, we can kiss taking climate change seriously goodbye.
The GOP Senate might not let RFK have the job. Remember that appointees have to go through the Senate and now the factions within the Republican party will be jockying for power.
I hope they do everything your team has promised they will do.
RFK is delusional if he thinks the Trump team will let him anywhere near a power position in health care.
You are kidding right? Lol

Lol, vaccines are not without risk, and anyone saying otherwise has swallowed the lies of the vax manufacturers. RFK has repeatedly stated that his position is not to ban vaccines but to promote information about their risks and side effects so that people (especially parents) can make informed decisions. Science is not some divine entity not to be questioned as liberals treat it, but a system of gaining knowledge best practiced by listening to dissenting voices and promoting robust research.

@@MartinZiegert on what basis?
@@andrewpirr We literally just elected an insurrectionist. What is confusing about his comment?
I wrote this in another comments section but it feels appropriate to paste it here:
I am part of the 'old' left, i.e. the left that cares a lot about economic inequality rather than identity politics.
They are interviewed and in their PAC the entire leadership is male and when asked they quite openly say ‘a woman’s place is in the home’.
exactly! thank you
Extremely well-said. Thank you for your sober commentary.
Very well said.
Pushing aside Bernie in 2016 was a clear sign that USA is actually a plutocracy, where candidates are "vetted" by the elites before the elections.

That feels like an easy scapegoat. There are plenty of us who haven't gone down the rabbit hole despite 'corporate media'
If anything it's those who rely on sources other than corporate media who've lost the plot.

The left is the ideology of anti-natalism. Obviously that's against God.
It’s nothing new, the US fundamentalist evangelical right have long talked of Trump as being ‘Gods anointed’ to ‘bring America to God’.

A reoccurring theme.
The reason Biden didn't campaign is because he was having problems with his age already at that point and limiting his exposure worked to his advantage. Harris, unlike Biden, is a bad politician so over exposure and putting her in hostile interview settings would only make her make her look worse.

This is correct! Biden’s ego and desire to have a two term presidency is a major reason as to why we were put in this position.
