      @@sleepyearth tbf the comparison on those very high contrast pictures wassn't that fair. he should've either disabled the hdr function on the s23 ultra or used a fixed lens on the a7. having a full frame with a zoom lens increases the quality of shadows, increasing the already present advantage of the bigger sensor. if he shot that pic with a fixed lens and the hdr disabled on the s23, the pictures would've looked way more similar, bringing the comparison down to the software being able to correctly elaborate the shadows. a phone has a small sensor, thus all the job in those details comes down to the software and the hdr function.

    One thing I think some people have overlooked which is particularly important to myself, is that, to resolve all that extra detail, Samsung have quietly also upgraded the lens, not the specs, but the quality. The refraction (spots) from lights in night shots, is noticeably improved and the overall natural sharpness in RAW shots seems improved. That, along with the overhauled speaker system and microphones, tells me Samsung are more focused on pushing the more marketable material. I personally think improved speakers/microphones on such a device, is a big deal! Especially as a content consumer/creator.

    • @finch-island
      @finch-island Рік тому +14

      You'd run into sensor readout-speed limitations pretty fast. That's one reason professional cameras can't (yet) do a lot of the software-trickery cellphone cameras can. The Sony A7IV for example reads the sensor very slow (it's a budget/entry level camera), but even the Sony A1 flagship hovers around 15ms I think (in electronic shutter mode). It WILL be interesting to see what will be possible once APS-C and fullframe cameras have near-to-instantaneous readout. edit: then again; who knows what will be possible with tiny cellphone camera sensors then! :)

    • @finch-island
      @finch-island Рік тому +5

      @@M0eRiyadh Not directly. The current BIONZ XR processing units in some Sony cameras for example are pretty beefy already (the A1 can handle up to 30 fullframe 50 MP images per second, which is pretty crazy), the limitations lie within the imaging sensor itself and the pipeline to the CPU as I understand it. Once you have read out let's say 12 or 30 or 50 MP of sensor data and the CPU goes to work, it doesn't really matter that much how large or small the sensor was. The amount and type of data is basically the same. I'm sure Sony BIONZ XR processors could run circles around a cellphones CPU but nevertheless it can't (yet) do what - for example - the S23 Ultra can achieve. But I'm not an expert, and I'm sure it's possible that Samsung is already doing some trickery before the image data has even left the pipeline to the CPU. Maybe there is some HDR processing already going on in that stage, just as the Canon C70 camcorder apparently does to boost dynamic range in certain modes...

    I really like the 200MP. I'm not a good photographer, but I like taking photos. A lot of photos that would be throwaways are often saved by the 200MP camera because I can crop into the image without losing much details and change the look of it, which is can't do with the 12MP cameras I'm used to, because the quality quickly suffers. Obviously the answer to this is "just take better photos" but when I'm running and gunning with a phone, that often isn't an option, and being able to crop in without losing too much detail and saving the shot really helps.

    Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra vs a $5000 pro camera. It's a fascinating topic that highlights the advancements in smartphone technology and how they're challenging traditional cameras.
    While it's true that smartphone cameras have come a long way in recent years, they still can't match the image quality and versatility of professional cameras. A pro camera is designed with a range of features and functions that allow for complete control over the image capture process, from the shutter speed and aperture to the lens and sensor size.
    That being said, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra has some impressive features that make it a formidable competitor to a pro camera. Its high-resolution sensor, advanced autofocus system, and multiple lenses provide users with an incredible level of control and flexibility when it comes to capturing images.
    Ultimately, the choice between a smartphone camera and a pro camera will come down to your needs and preferences. If you're a professional photographer or someone who values the highest level of image quality and versatility, a pro camera will likely be the better option. But for most people, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra will provide all the features and functions needed to capture stunning photos and videos.

    I have a Sony A7C with Tamron 28-200mm and also a Samsung S21U. The Sony auto uploads to my google photos, along with the phone pics, and for me the differnce in quality is very apparant even without zooming in.
    I think the main factors are the natral bokeh, lack of over-sharpening (while actually resolving more detail) and more natltral colours.
    Looks like the S23U has improved things further but still a little way off in my opinion.

    I have had the chance to do my own tests on the s23 ultra, and let me just say... WOW! The night mode is amazing! It's like having night vision, the phone could see better in the dark than my actual eyes! I was walking around a pitch black room and I could use the camera to see. Very impressive. The 200mp camera looks amazing. The detail and amount of times you can zoom in on a photo and still get a clear image shocked me. 100x zoom of the s22 ultra lives on as well! The phone felt great, quality yet not heavy in the hand. It has a very clean look, the sides have a bit less roundness than the s22 ultra, as it has a bit of a flat spot on the sides which I think is handy for gripping the phone steadily. The s-pen was amazing as always, the phone was smooth and fast like the top of the line phone it is, and the selfie camera made me look great! Can't wait to get my own, and I highly recommend going in-store to feel the demos. You'll be impressed. Hope this helps!

    Is this a sponsored video? Really, because so much nonsense is going on here. 1- By comparing photos side by side, you are effectively showing us 540x405 pixel snapshots on a FHD monitor. Saying one is better one is sharper blah and blah. At that 0.2M target resolution, I can take exact pictures with an old S4 mini, run through lightroom to match color grading and add some NR, and it'd be indistinguishable from S23 or A7IV or even A7RV images.
    2- WHY does everyone compare phone-vs-camera with two sub-par zoom lenses? If we are comparing versitility, put one single 24-240 to the camera, and do "fair" daily device vs device comparisone. If we are comparing two "systems" in image quality, night performance, then put an Sigma ART 24mm f/1.4 prime lens and then compare with its 23mm main camera. Put a 50mm f/1.4 to compare 2x 85mm for 3x.Because *NO* photographer (amateur or professional) will "prefer" taking an f/4 zoom lens for low-light photography or top image quality is required. Most will RENT faster prime lenses before going to a pre-planned shooting with that sorry thing. TBH, we all know the reason here: At 8:24, you've clearly demonstrated the 200MP main sensor/lens doesn't resolve much more than 12MPs even at optimal lighting conditions. Sigma ART is not only faster lens (which will drop ISO or speed up shutter on camera more), its sharp enough to optically resolve ALL 33MP of an A7IV's sensor, and camera will keep doing this at crazy high ISOs. So "Goliath completely destroying David as expected" wouldn't be a fun video isn't it? No shame here, we are comparing phone's f/1.7 lens on 72mm2 sensor vs f1.4 lens on 862mm2 full frame sensor.
    3- You're just wrong (or terribly biased) about night mode explanations. Phone's don't go THAT low in shutter speeds. I've listed my entire phone picture library (comprised of a dozen phones) by shutter speed (just out of curiosity) and lowest (non-manual) shutter speed I have is on a dark beach, 1/5 seconds at 12k ISO (and picture is still terribly underexposed). Lowest shutter speed in a cityscape like that is 1/13. Question is WHY on earth do you need a tripod for this? We are talking about a pretty wide 24mm focal length here, with just a little extra care, you can use an 80 year old film camera to take razor sharp photos at ~1/15 (at 24mm focal length). ANY half-modern camera made in last 10 years (even entry models with their dirt cheap kit lenses) have at least as capable optical stabilisation as a phone. My 12 year old D800 with its 24-70 Tamron has 5 stops of OS, theoratically allowing me as low as 1-second shots hand held. Granted I'd need 3-4 shots to get a really sharp one at 1/2 or lower, but that is EXACTLY what phone does behind the scenes. Burst shoot many photos then pick the least shaky one, then apply NR/sharpening/color effects.
    With your A7IV, your body has 5.5 stops of in-body sensor-shift stabilisation plus, 4 stops of optical stabilisation in that 24-105 f/4 G OSS lens. Phones have tested have like 2 stops of OIS at best, If you really need a tripod to match a phone's shutter speeds with that setup, well... I'll just say problem is neither the camera nor phone.
    Don't get me wrong, I WANT phones to get as good as to proper cameras. I want to leave my gear at home and not regret my decision everytime I find something beautiful to photograph. But as you've demonstrated, even with wrong lens, we have to be careful in our "editorial choices" to claim they are "almost similar". With correct lens for the correct scene, Comparing an S24 Ultra to any modern full frame device is like comparing a webcam to an S24 Ultra.
    Only half-valid point you have is about phone's doing auto editing in software. Half-valid, because cameras can do editing too, its just phones can do it better.

    It's difficult to compare the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra to a professional camera that costs $5,000 because they serve different purposes and have different capabilities.
    The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is a smartphone with a powerful camera that can take high-quality photos and videos. It has a quad-camera setup with a 200 MP primary camera, a periscope telephoto lens with 10x optical zoom, a telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom, and an ultrawide lens with a 120˚ field of view. It can shoot up to 8K video at 24 or 30 frames per second and has features such as auto-HDR, panorama, and super steady video.
    On the other hand, a professional camera that costs $5,000 would likely have even more advanced features and capabilities, such as interchangeable lenses, larger sensors, and more manual controls for adjusting settings such as shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. It may also be more durable and able to withstand harsher environments or shooting conditions.
    Ultimately, whether the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra or a $5,000 pro camera is the better option depends on your specific needs and preferences. For most casual photographers or videographers, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra's camera will likely be more than sufficient, while professional photographers and videographers may require the more advanced capabilities of a dedicated camera.

    Though I am a big advocate for greater technology in smartphone cameras, I still think that they are a long way away from being a perfect substitute or alternative to a professional camera. Mainly geometry, lens interchangeability, reliability and editing flexibility just aren't on equal grounds yet, mostly due to the over-reliance on software over optics and hardware. For video especially the gap is substantially larger - colour science goes out the window, everything is fuzzy and dynamic range suffers severely. Without perfect lighting setups I have found that they are quite often unusable, though they are perfect (with the right lighting setups) for indoor work, for say, streamers or UA-camrs.
    The thing with a camera is, if you're doing it right, it's going to come out right. You may need extra equipment, say, a tripod, a star-tracker, good lighting, lenses, filters etc. or maybe even custom camera software to bring the most out of it for film-making, but at the end of the day it is still the best option, in my opinion. I will say, however, I am not a fan of all the new super-high resolution sensors that are coming out as someone that enjoys working at night. Moreover, for price vs. performance, I would still choose a mid-tier DSLR with a 50mm f1.8 lens over any smartphone of a similar price.
    It would be nice if you could demonstrate these two options in a serious setting, taking each on a dedicated photoshoot in challenging but likely conditions for photographers (i.e. at night) pushing the editing flexibility of each option much further. That is where I have never found a suitable smartphone option for the work that I do at night with continuous RGB lighting, as all options I have tried struggle to pick up enough detail than even my old Canon 800D, or worse yet, Nikon D3100 which is an entry-level camera from over 12 years ago.
    I understand that it's different for average consumers who are looking to buy a phone that HAS a good camera, but if I am to spend £1000+ on a smartphone FOR its camera, I think I would still prefer a Fuji or a Sony. And despite everything I hear about convenience, I remain hardly bothered to use my phone to take photos when I know I will get a better result from my camera.

    The Sony camera gives you a raw image with excellent details for professionals to edit and processed it afterwards. The S23 Ultra is for the layman who doesn't want to go through all the steps so the phone does everything for you. However, you end up having less control of the final image and especially in zoom shots there is significantly less details.

    At the end of the video you talked about night shot mentioning that you need tripod for professional camera to get good results. That is correct for long exposure. However phone takes reasonably long (or short) exposure and combine multiple exposures in one picture, as most of us know that. My point here is that Canon introduced the same principle in 2012. called handheld night scene in their DSLR line starting with EOS 650D if I remember correctly. So for more than 10 years we can take night scene without tripod and it works pretty good - I have used it. To be precise, it make low light photography much better, but it is not long exposure.

    Back when screens weren't as good as they are today, I could barely notice the differences between smartphones and professional cameras. But now you can tell very easily
