I even understand the love over sneakers, appreciate athleticism, and talent which can manifest in unexpected ways or in unexpected people.

Pacing perfect, artwork perfect, emotion characters all so so perfect, Slam dunk will be forever the best sports manga, this inspires me to make my own story one day
Great review. I think what's really special about the manga is takes something that might be foreign and demystifies it by connecting it to really common experiences. I've never seen a red headed 6 foot japanese person... But I've wanted to believe I was naturally good at something and turned out not to be. I joined something I had no interest in to chase a girl and ended up loving that thing. It feels surprisingly slice of life for a shounen manga. It's dramatized but there is an emotional core that is true. We've all been Mitsui at one point in our lives. And we've all hated someone like Rukawa!
I’ve just started slam dunk and I am loving it a lot. I’ve finished volume 1 and I’m on volume 2 and ordered more volumes of the series. Man this series is going to be peak sports manga
The end of battle against Kainan was the point where I start to really love Slam Dunk. The show is full on comedy at times but when it gets emotional, it really gets me bawling.
Personally, I was only interested in volumes 22 to 31 because I first saw the anime which was so massive despite the fact that Toei animation badly wanted to have the same pacing as the manga and ended up with hilarious results (Kogure's shot vs Ryonan felt like a season-ender that continued at the next season premiere), it also didn't help that Toei animation wanted to change the story after Shohoku beat Sannoh and it pissed off Inoue enough to cancel the anime when it was just about to start the Inter-High Nationals.
I just finished Slam Dunk the other week and it was a great read! Haikyuu!! is my favorite shonen manga of all time and seeing how much of Inoue's writing style carries over to Furudate's own really puts into perspective how great and legendary of a series it was.
im half taiwanese and lived the first 10 years of my life there and shit was (and still is) super popular there. yesterday while talking to one of my closest friends (from korea) for over 10 years i found out that he loves the series just as much as i do lol (hence why im watching this video now) yeah there r many manags that we loved growing up and still love to this day, but no other manga/anime from my childhood still makes me feel the way i do now that slam dunk does. the characters, story and how involved and immersed u get into it is truly on another level. i truly believe that when u look at all aspects of things, one piece could very possibly be considered the best manga of all time, but man, slam dunk most def belongs in that conversation as well.
yo second time ever i got some kind of reply from the content creator. mad love back to u and really happy u decided to give this truly all-time story a shot and that u came to love it
You've convinced me to read this manga. I tired watching the anime numerous times and made it up to maybe episode 8-10 or so and would just get annoyed at Sakuragi that I gave up. However anime isn't manga and you've made some amazing points. So I'm going to give the series a whirl. The only think I'm sad about now is there was a big 2 for 3 manga sale up here and now it's over... Thanks for the video.
I actually rarely watch anime based on manga and a huge part is because often I feel they get the pacing wrong and it takes me out of the story. Plus until recently I don’t feel like the animation does the art justice in many cases. Hope you enjoy the manga!
@@omnibuscollector I agree with you. I've never been able to watch DBZ as it's just a slogg to get through however the manga is one of my favorites (especially pre DBZ). The 90s animation doesn't bother me at all though, I grew up with 80s anime (Astro boy is still a personal fav). I'm really glad you made this video to highlight the series.
I’m not a fan of sports either, but when I watched Slam Dunk over in the Philippines back in 2002, it became one of my favorite anime/manga series of all time. I used to think I was the only American who knew and liked this series, so it’s great to hear from others in recent years that they also enjoy Slam Dunk
As we all know, Hanamichi's character is based on a colorful and charismatic basketball legend Dennis Rodman, who happens to play with the G.O.A.T. Michael Jordan, where Kaede Rukawa's character was inspired. Hanamichi's rivalry with Rukawa makes him more interesting as he progressed amazingly fast which makes you root for him. For a sports manga, Slam Dunk is a breath of fresh air even though it was released 30 years ago, where most of shonen mangas within the same genre focuses on a protagonist which is either a prodigy, or an underdog who was bullied then catapults himself to the top of whatever he's into. Hanamichi is a cocky idiot who wants to impress a girl, then faced skilled opponents where makes him want to become the best player in all of Japan. Can't wait for the upcoming movie, and I hope Inoue would make a continuation for this masterpiece.

Slam Dunk is one of the all time greats. Personally, I was not the biggest fan of the epilogue but it was still a phenomenal story across the board. You did sum up sports manga very well. As long as the story-telling is well done, it will be enjoyable either way. I eagerly await to hear your opinion on Haikyu!! (my favorite) when you get to it!
Bruh, my heart pounded so hard at the last panel when Shohoku x Sannoh. Will they win??? Never before i felt the same experience while reading a manga.
I haven’t read Slam Dunk yet, but I recognize that it’s a legendary series. Haikyu is my favorite manga of the past decade and it hit the those points you mentioned with Slam Dunk: getting you into a sport you didn’t initially care for, amazing characterization, pacing. When I get around to it I know I’ll enjoy it as well. Great video.
Haikyu is following the formula established by Slam Dunk so closely plenty of people consider it almost a rip off😂 If you enjoy Haikyu, you gotta check out what made Haikyu possible.
Slam dunk is the 2nd manga I ever collected after vagabond viz bigs then after both of them I collected the single volumes of berserk and bought 1-5 deluxe edition volumes
I watched the Slam Dunk anime around 20 years ago, and I didn't give a fuck about sports and never watched any sports on TV in my life. But I was immediately hooked and to this day, it's still one of my absolute favorite anime ever. I plan on starting a manga collection in several years after I make some money, and Slam Dunk will be one of the first ones I seek out.
I'm sorry I happened upon this video so late. But I too love Slam Dunk and it came into my mindset on a weird day at a convention, waiting around for friends. It's weird how it just popped up into my head , but damn do I love it.
i love slamdunk.. i love it more than kuroko's, ahiru, eyeshield, prince of tennis or even haikyuu, and ippo.. and i know it's not just bcoz of nostalgia.. it seems to me dat given a chance of a remake, slamdunk cud be toptier to today's audience..
I'm an anime only fan. But Slam Dunk is the only manga I felt compelled to read. I remember being amazed by how the drawings looked. Didn't think I would be engaged in just reading and looking at stationary drawings.
@TOC / I’am, as I’m known to say...a recent convert to Manga. For years I thought it was all never ending volumes of Art, and very little in Plot, Script, and Characterizations. Sooo, about 3yrs ago...as the Crow flew North...Lightning struck, and whatever the cause was..? I found myself reading the Vol 01, of a Manga...by the title of “MONSTER.” Written and Drawn by some Japanese Manga guy named “Naoki Urusawa.” / Needless to say, I bought it, immediately issues 2-4, then I up to Vol 18. Where, much to my unexpected sadness (that was revelatory), it just ENDED..!!??? I was more in shock that it had ended so quickly, than at the realization that I actually felt this way about a funny Foreign comic book, printed in cheap paper, in B&W. I had heard and knew of Japanese Manga...but for whatever reasons(?), had never got around to seeking them out and buying these little Comic Books. I want to thank you for your thorough and insightful review of this very interesting creator. I will seek out “Slam Dunk”, as I’m currently making my way through EVERYTHING EVER written and/or Drawn by Naoki Urusawa. Along the way I’ve picked up the recent HC Vol of BERSERK, which came highly recommended. Next on my list to start buying and reading will be Slam Dunk, Vagabond, which looks to have exquisite artwork!! Please, i draw but I write as well-nothing can replace great crafted characters, and a great plotted story that is executed - flawlessly. If you (or your viewers?) have High Recommendations of Mature Manga that would captivate my imagination, please - suggest away. I’m listening. Again, Thank you, for such a well crafted and thorough video, that makes an un-reader of Manga as I was, for the last 25 yrs., into a Brand New Excited Manga Fan..!!!
This is the only sports anime where I didn’t dislike anything. The pacing was good usually after every shenanigans, there’s a bit of drama then the sports moments and bit of slice of life. The side characters and even opposing team characters were all likeable and had their great moments. This anime is my real definition of a 90s anime. The endings always usually leave a big hole in our hearts lol
I would love to read Slam Dunk (physically that is) but unfortunately it never fully released here in germany and the english volumes also seem to be really hard to get nowadays.
Do you enjoy Haikyuu? Haikyuu for me is the closest sport manga that gave me the same kind of feeling when I read Slam Dunk years ago - characters, realistic, passions. I love Eyeshield 21 too.
I don’t, and it seems Viz has been having a hard time getting things printed quickly during the pandemic so I would have to guess if it happens it will at least after things go back to normal at their printers.
I love slam dunk but I think one piece is the king of shounen but slam dunk is better done and it’s one of my favourite manga of all time I would say only berserk vagabond monster punpun is better and real is as good or better
Slam duck is one of the best out there but it has so many open plot point. I think the ending could have been better it felt rush. In one chapter they wins the best game of their life but in next page turn it reviled just in little corner that they lost the next game. I agree it is a bittersweet ending but it could have been better. Also so many characters that has still open story lines that are not resolved. For example stories like oyasumi punpun or monster or 20th cen. boys even FMA those were perfect example of how a story should resolve all the plot points. My score - 9/10
The reason I love the final chapter is because it embodies what the entire story is about...it's about falling in love with basketball and not so much about winning thats in my eyes the final chapter is a perfect way to cap off the series Every character has gone through with their respective arcs and have been challenged on an emotional and physical level to the highest degree Although I do understand when people say that they aren't the biggest fan of it...cause it took me a couple of re reads To fully appreciate inoues vision Side note: that hi5 between rukawa and sakuragi always brings tears to my eyes when I read it
I 1000% agree with the title!!! Ahhh so nostalgic~ my childhood memories 😌 Its still my most reread title (every year i go into a slam dunk season) of all my manga collection and im still hyped everytime👍
Currently reading Slam Dunk, and I'm at the start of Volume 22. So far, it's been pretty above average, but nothing super special. With the exception of the match with Ryonan. Did anyone else feel that way at that point of the series? Struggling to see right now why it is so heavily praised.
perhaps it's the translation? because like the youtuber said, even if you don't care for basketball, you would still get invested in the characters. the manga itself is hilarious, but if the translation is not done well, it may ruin the sense of humor. Age could be a factor too. I would say, if you are over 22, you may be too old for this manga.
That last match between Shohoku and Sannoh is on a whole other level. I can't for the life of me imagine how Inoue scripted that.

Great video-also peeped the volumes of AJIN in the corner, bro knows ball
Dude this is such a great review! Looking forward for more video like this. Slam Dunk teach me in life its okay if we can't win anything.
I'm currently at chapter 133 and its soo freaking Good... why didn't I start this sooner
I just finish it..... 9.5/10
They set up some things that didnt get paid off.... That's why it's not 10/10
I’ve just started slam dunk and I am loving it a lot. I’ve finished volume 1 and I’m on volume 2 and ordered more volumes of the series.
Man this series is going to be peak sports manga
This is my favorite comedy manga.
The end of battle against Kainan was the point where I start to really love Slam Dunk. The show is full on comedy at times but when it gets emotional, it really gets me bawling.
great video!
Great video
Personally, I was only interested in volumes 22 to 31 because I first saw the anime which was so massive despite the fact that Toei animation badly wanted to have the same pacing as the manga and ended up with hilarious results (Kogure's shot vs Ryonan felt like a season-ender that continued at the next season premiere), it also didn't help that Toei animation wanted to change the story after Shohoku beat Sannoh and it pissed off Inoue enough to cancel the anime when it was just about to start the Inter-High Nationals.
Great video👍
good video man you get a new sub
Just ordered this manga
I just finished Slam Dunk the other week and it was a great read! Haikyuu!! is my favorite shonen manga of all time and seeing how much of Inoue's writing style carries over to Furudate's own really puts into perspective how great and legendary of a series it was.
y'all stan takehiko inoue
im half taiwanese and lived the first 10 years of my life there and shit was (and still is) super popular there. yesterday while talking to one of my closest friends (from korea) for over 10 years i found out that he loves the series just as much as i do lol (hence why im watching this video now)
yeah there r many manags that we loved growing up and still love to this day, but no other manga/anime from my childhood still makes me feel the way i do now that slam dunk does. the characters, story and how involved and immersed u get into it is truly on another level.
i truly believe that when u look at all aspects of things, one piece could very possibly be considered the best manga of all time, but man, slam dunk most def belongs in that conversation as well.
yo second time ever i got some kind of reply from the content creator. mad love back to u and really happy u decided to give this truly all-time story a shot and that u came to love it
You've convinced me to read this manga.
I learned about Slam Dunk when it aired on Mexico.
I’ve been on the fence on getting this....you totally sold me. I’m going to pick up first couple volumes. Thanks
Your passion for the art of manga really comes through in the video :)
Love Slam Dunk, I just watched/read it. Masterful. It's really high echelon.
Good job, your vid made me reread slam dunk again for the 5th time
As we all know, Hanamichi's character is based on a colorful and charismatic basketball legend Dennis Rodman, who happens to play with the G.O.A.T.
One of may favorites mangas for sure, and the best spokon along ashita no joe
In the Philippines, Slam Dunk is the number 1 sport Anime.
I never cared about basketball and had stopped watching animes but Slam Dunk changed my life.
and if u guys can believe it a slam dunk movie was confirmed to release this year
i just started the anime immediately after watching this on ep 4 nd loving it
What ep now man?
@@raza9tixx 34 just finished thr 2nd game gr8 show i was expecting it to be vary serious judging by the chr design glad its not to serious tho cuz hanamich iz amazing

I’ll admit I still haven’t read the epilogue, but making this really made me want to read that and also Buzzer Beater!
I hope everyone is as excited about the upcoming movie as I am!
Where is everyone in the comments? Two years ago? Wait,… Im in the future?
Bruh, my heart pounded so hard at the last panel when Shohoku x Sannoh. Will they win???
Never before i felt the same experience while reading a manga.
I legit jumped, punched the air, and shouted when Mitsui hit that four point play
Haikyu is following the formula established by Slam Dunk so closely plenty of people consider it almost a rip off😂
If you enjoy Haikyu, you gotta check out what made Haikyu possible.
did you read it tho?
Slam dunk is the 2nd manga I ever collected after vagabond viz bigs then after both of them I collected the single volumes of berserk and bought 1-5 deluxe edition volumes
the mitsui character arch specifically on the sannoh match is probably the best or second best character arch in the series
takehiko inoue is my top ten 10 favorite mangaka .
What stands the most in Slam Dunk is the Comedy. Sakuragi is the only Shonen Character whose closer, just a little, to Gintoki in terms of comedy.
Even Rukawa was funny without even trying.
Thank you!
I'm an anime only fan. But Slam Dunk is the only manga I felt compelled to read. I remember being amazed by how the drawings looked. Didn't think I would be engaged in just reading and looking at stationary drawings.
the power of comics
My personal favourite mangaka are Takahiko inoue which is my personal favourite and urasawa naoki junji ito and inoue asano
Me wanted on you to do an Eyeshield 21 video.
Are you going to review The First Slam Dunk movie?
It's getting increasingly harder to collect as time goes on lol
I'll check it out thanks to you.
I finished it today. Started reading it in March. One of the best manga I've ever read. Very special
I first read Slam Dunk in Shonen Jump! much love to SJ
Best sports manga, period
Do you know if there will be reprint soon?
I don’t, and it seems Viz has been having a hard time getting things printed quickly during the pandemic so I would have to guess if it happens it will at least after things go back to normal at their printers.
I really want to read slam dunk knowing my dad watched the anime growing up but I just can’t find any volumes
I love Slam Dunk. It’s the godfather of shonen sports manga.
You might also like Kuroko no Basket, Blue Lock or Diamond no Ace
The greatest of all time
I love slam dunk but I think one piece is the king of shounen but slam dunk is better done and it’s one of my favourite manga of all time I would say only berserk vagabond monster punpun is better and real is as good or better
I need this on digital so bad. The scans out there suck. I'd love to support it
If only I could find it...😔
The anime is incomplete so I am looking for the manga.
The reason I love the final chapter is because it embodies what the entire story is about...it's about falling in love with basketball and not so much about winning thats in my eyes the final chapter is a perfect way to cap off the series
Every character has gone through with their respective arcs and have been challenged on an emotional and physical level to the highest degree
Although I do understand when people say that they aren't the biggest fan of it...cause it took me a couple of re reads To fully appreciate inoues vision
Side note: that hi5 between rukawa and sakuragi always brings tears to my eyes when I read it
hv u read diamond no ace.. its a baseball manga.. n its has the same trope... mc dont know much about the sport.. n we leanr together with him
I 1000% agree with the title!!!
Have you finished it?
Wooooow 💖💖💖
There's a collab with the Jordan brand. It's successful, alright 😏
We just made a Slam Dunk March Madness Tournament on our channel, please check it out!
