But even the ending of manga was so unsatisfying. Manga should be drawn again for like winter national games where akagi could finally win the championship.
Even more important than finishing the story: fix the pacing. In an era where an episode of anime is expected to progress the story in some way, the old Slam Dunk is unwatchable by many people, myself included. 6+ episodes for a throw-away practice match? No thank you.
But the practice match was exciting and whats the point of it all if i) we dont get to see them win national championship ii) we dont get to see growth of sakuragi as a basketball player and how his increase in skills along with his extraordinary physical attributes compare against other great players like rukawa, sendoh, etc
@J.T. yeah but atleast continue the manga and show sakuragi develop as a player in 2nd year and rukawa as a complete player rather than only a scorer( also outcome of his rivalry with sendoh), sakuragi's rivalry with that 200cm giant(i dont remember his name) he saw at the national tournament. Haikyuu and slam dunk are the best sports anime in my perspective cause they are very realistic(unlike kuroko no basket, wtf is zone) and although haikyuu is predictable, it is the story which makes it the best, it doesnt have cringy moments and does not show a 5'3 guy overpower a 6'2 guy alone, instead focuses on the team and equally focuses on the competition.(there isnt the need for making competition have moral problems like in KNB to be better than them), and slam dunk could have been better bcoz of the unpredictability but he just shut it down. Man this is annoying.
This manga not only popularized the game of basketball in Japan, but Korea as well. Ask any generation of the 80-90s kids who hadn't read the Slam Dunk in Korea, and you'll find it very rare to find.
Basketball was the only sport from the West which avoided being banned in China, Slam Dunk catapulted basketball's popularity to new heights. Everyone wanted to be Sakuragj, as his work ethics resonated greatly with hard working Chinese commoners. MBA has no.1 viewership in China, owning partly to Slam Dunk.
Is funny how Inoue created the Shohoku jersey based on Bull's jersey (same way Shoyo is the Celtics and Kainan is Lakers) and based Sakuragi on Rodman and Rukawa on Jordan, but well before Rodman and Jordan join forces in the Bulls, what a fantastic outcome!!!
@@carahai9270 not necessarily true, in '89 he was already a champion, although as a bench player the '89 Pinstons beat Bird's Celtics, Jordan's Bulls and Kareem and Magic's Lakers. I'm one of the ones started playing basketball because of SLAMDUNK. Not just within Japan. It spread through entire Asia. Cantonese translated mangas, I still have them in my basement. I think the series ended perfectly the way it should. Thank you Inoue!
Best fucking ending and ironic because despite the title the author decides to Truely show the appreciation and the progression of hanamichi as a basketball player. So inspiring if you're a fan of basketball.
It's impressive how similar Sakuragi and Rodman have as players. But dennis rodman came to the chicago bulls in 1994 and slam dunk began to be drawn in 1990. That has always made me think that Inoue traveled back in time to create Sakuragi .
This anime was the reason I got into basketball and a lot of fights. I was 14 and around the same height as Sakuragi Hanamichi (i stopped growing at 6’4”) I got a buzz cut to look like him and I basically emulated his personality for like a whole year 😂

Great video! I remember when the Slam Dunk anime started appearing on Catalan TV. The basketball courts in school got suddenly crowded. And this was in Barcelona, can't even imagine for Japan.
Growing up in Korea where soccer was the sports and the only basketball courts were on sand fields, this was what introduced me to basketball. Thank you Slam Dunk!

I honestly never followed sports manga or anime as I thought it wasn’t my cup of tea but then I got really into the slam dunk manga. I think I’m going to try another sports manga.
I really enjoyed this type of documentary style manga/anime Breakdown. The script was well written, the host was very pleasent to listen to and the editing was really clean aswell. Please more content like this :)
The best part of SLAM DUNK is that every character has a soul and a story of its own. Not just one team but every team and every player. That's why it draws so much audience because everyone can relate to different character in the manga. It's truly amazing.
It was Slam Dunk that got me into playing basketball throughout my high school years. Sweet memories. It was on Animax in Asia in 2006 2007 2008 or something like that. Also talking about Slam Dunk, you gotta talk about those on point soundtracks like Sekai wa Owaru Made Wa (from Wand) and Endless Chain (from BAAD)

A very similar story to this one is American Football in Japan. While it is by no means as popular or common as Basketball in Japan, the japanese pro-football league was actually formed largely in part to the popularity of Eyeshield 21.
Great video.........I watched Slam Dunk over school break over the past two years and believe me.........it was a beautiful journey. To love the game no matter what happens is a driving motif and the characters grip your soul as they struggle to find their place in the world and game alike. You can see how the game influenced the manga, and how the manga influenced the game and peoples' lives who were inspired by it. Slam Dunk is not only the greatest sports series I ever watched but one of the best series I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing due to its in-depth narration, deep characterization, real life and in-game struggles while reaching for success, and passion for the game like no other. Slam Dunk isn't just a great sports series, it's one of the greatest series ever conceived! That is what brings a work to life and takes it to a whole new level.
You should do one on Captain Tsubasa, the sport of soccer/football. I love this series till today, as I and much of Latin America and Spain saw this anime growing up in the early 90's. An amazing sport anime.
Just finished it, so here I am. Watching every video related to slam dunk. Something I always do when I get attached to an anime and finished watching it.
A few years ago I was in visiting family in Hirosaki, Japan, a small town in Aomori Prefecture. I think it was 2016 and winter. The town is famous for its cherry blossom festival and summertime Nebuta festivals, and outside of those times not a lot is going on. Anyway at the business hotel I was at, there's a bath with piped in hot springs water on the upper floor. I'm a tall white guy and pretty much out-size most of Japan, but when I was in the bath a handful of very tall, very muscular Japanese young men showed up at once. I'm very much impressed. Next morning at the hotel breakfast, after seeing quite a number of large guys there, I also notice a couple of black guys put two and two together and realize there's a basketball team in town. I don't know what they're doing in Hirosaki, but I figure it was one of the J League teams.

I am not old enough to have read Slam Dunk when it came out, I ended up reading it a few years ago and it's incredible how much it resonated with me, it's completely true the fact that Takehito Inoue enormous love for basket is transmitted through the comic and I believe that anyone who has played basketball shares the feelings he
many people across South East Asia, and I can attest to it, started to play basketball after Slam Dunk fame in the 90s and well into 2000s. And much like, Hanamichi, people first started playing bcause of the manga/anime but stayed onto play because of the love grown over the sport.
Slam Dunk also did that in Philippines. Every kid, teen, even adult knows Slam Dunk and heavily popularise basketball. Like almost every house in a neighborhood has a basket ball ring
SD was classic. But nobody was talking about Kuroko because: 1. Was hardly promoted 2. Shitty timeslot 3. Country is so heavy on cheesy soap operas and superficial entertainment 4. I think that this is a great video and thank you for posting it. I have yet to read the manga or watch the anime but definitely know how popular Slam Dunk is. Thank you for creating this video, I hope to one day read and watch this anime to check this off my bucket list.
Just finished the manga, it was great, took some time to get started, but when it did, it sprinted. The ending was a bit sudden and disappointing, but overall, it was good.
Funny you mention Dragon Ball, mexican dub have a Rene Garcia(Vegeta) be the voice Hanamichi. When Hanamichi is facing Hanagata voice by Mario Castañeda(Goku), he obtained a victory. So in a way it a victory for Vegeta against Goku.
They need to do a reboot for 2022 because the quality of animation has improved and it can benefit from having the full concept being fully developed and produce it easily .

I remember reading "harlem beat" back when i was in 7th grade so i joined the bball team in middle school
Warriors went 73-9 beating the previous record of 72-10 by the bulls
And then, the infamous numbers of 3-1 xD
73-9 no ring
Erased and then got 3 championships
@@Rose-xm4og HAHAHAHHA, Well does Kawhi have a story for you
The Warriors or Dubs are now the NBA's Monstars.
Check their cartoon on UA-cam from Bleacher rBport.
I watched slamdunk when i was a kid, and it was the reason why i fell in love with this sport :)
Inoue actually released an epilogue for slam dunk called “10 days after” I picked up a copy in Tokyo last year and it’s fun to see the characters again. Worth a read
Slam dunk is my favorite manga/anime of all time, it made me love basketball and make it a major hobby
Hajime No Ippo is the BEST sports anime no cap and now I’m gonna start amateur boxing and eventually pro boxing
I think Ping Pong and Ashita no Joe are better personally.
Ashita no joe and Ping pong are better.
Ippo is in the high tier with Slam dunk, Diamond no ace, Major while Joe and Ping pong are god tier
Eyeshield 21 stomps ippo with ease.
Ippo and slam dunk are like 1st equal to me
Hajime no ippo fans are so toxic
didn't know about those player comps but they make so much sense
The anime had a similar effect in China. Yao Ming really caused the sport to take off, but Sakuragi Hanamichi helped lay a lot of the grassroots.
I have yet to read the manga or watch the anime but definitely know how popular Slam Dunk is. Thank you for creating this video, I hope to one day read and watch this anime to check this off my bucket list.
Actually basketball introducede me to Anime
Slam dunk was the reason why i got into basketball in the first place
I hope one day we get a Slam Dunk anime remake that covers the entire manga. Hopefully made by Production I.G.
Joel Barnes Imagine David Production making a sports anime, that would be lit
And still, any anime wont be even close to insane skill of Takehiko Inoue. Manga is always better.
Inoue-sensei hated the Slam Dunk anime... I'd assume it had left a bad taste in his mouth.
5:26 - Jordan played the Small Forward position when he played for the Wizards, although this was after the manga was written.
I like how he said high school players get “drafted” into the NCAA😂
Yeah I thought that was funny too lol
My favorite character was Mitsui Hisashi their shooting guard. I was somewhat like him minus the injury.
Just finished the manga, it was great, took some time to get started, but when it did, it sprinted. The ending was a bit sudden and disappointing, but overall, it was good.
The ending is perfect
thanks tim. love ur vids on here
Thank you for the highly informative video. Enjoy it a lot! :)
Glad you enjoyed it!! We'll be having more coming soon too!
This video is awesome! Please keep releasing more like this!
Thanks! We have a new one up about wrestling and anime, and more coming soon!
Fun fact: The first non-white basketball player was Japanese-American who played for the Knicks... Wat Misaka.
Interesting.
"(In Japan)" Okay, cuz I was trippin over hear by Detroit. Lol
Two of my favorite things in one. I couldn't asked for a better video.
I grew up watching this shit. Good times
They need to do a reboot for 2022 because the quality of animation has improved and it can benefit from having the full concept being fully developed and produce it easily .
You made a mistake at 14:45. The 2016 Warriors beat the Bulls record by winning 73 games in a single season.
and blew a 3-1 lead
@@bazinwaz6883 That doesn't really matter because it's a regular season record.
one of my fav animes of all time!! awesome vid
Charles Barkley is the best anime basketball player
Barkley-sama....
Tim Lyu Barkley-kun
Barkley - Onii chan
that would be kawata from sannoh lol
Charles Barkley is my waifu
I would love to see a similar video about Eyeshield 21. From what I understand, Eyeshield 21 had a similar effect on the number of Japanese playing American Football as well.
I love that ending. We fight, we lose, life goes on
It's beautiful
What a super interesting topic, Sports manga and anime, are always so enthralling. Love content like this, would love more!
It's wild!!!! We just did one on wrestling then you might like. It's one of my favorite topics
