What's The Best All Natural Insect Repellent for Dogs?
I've included 3 very simple but highly effective DIY recipes you can make up and two of them can be bought ready-made as pump sprays if you prefer.
The vet and off the shelf spot on treatments are toxic and can cause long term health damage to your dog when these natural insect repellents for dogs are highly effective and safe for use with fleas, ticks, lice and other biting insects.
In this video I share 3 natural tick and flea repellents for dogs but one in particular is the only non-DEET product that the International Travel Clinic recommends to those with destinations in malaria-prone countries, and oil of lemon eucalyptus is one of only two non-DEET chemicals approved by the CDC.
So if you and your dog live in a mosquito infested area, this one will meet your needs.
And remember, keeping your dog safe in the summer isn't just about repelling insects, but keeping them free of toxic pesticides.
And when you finish watching the best all natural insect repellent for dogs, leave a comment below the video to let me know what you think.
Neem Oil:
For Daily Flea Irritation:
Mix in some pure neem oil to an organic leave-on hair conditioner or jojoba oil, or pure Shea Butter around 5 drops of neem oil to 1Tbsp of conditioner/jojoba oil/shea butter, then rub in all over the coat to stop the fleas biting. The fleas will then begin to starve and die. Then begin combing out the fleas each day until they are all gone.
As a general insect repellant, once a week, dab on a little 50/50 mixture of the neem and carrier oil such as grape seed oil at the base of your dogs neck between the shoulder blades and on the rear end above the tail between the hips, and a little under the armpits and groin to keep fleas away.
Cedar Oil:
Cedar oil can be used in much the same way as neem oil by adding 3 drops of the pure essential oil of cedar wood to 1 tablespoon of carrier oil such as grape seed oil.
Apply the oil mix to your dogs rear end above the tail between the hips, and a little under the armpits and groin to keep fleas away.
Another easy way to use cedar wood is by spraying with a pre-prepared 16oz spray product. You use the spray directly on your dogs coat before they go outside. You can also use it around the house, the yard and while travelling to repel fleas, ticks, mosquitoes and mites.
It can also be used on bed bugs, bedding and anywhere needed around the house to repel nearly all insects and rodents.
Lemon Eucalyptus Oil:
Again, you can use it like neem oil by getting the essential oil, mixing 3 drops into 1 table spoon of grape seed oil and applying a few drops directly to your dogs body, at the base of your dogs neck between the shoulder blades and on the rear end above the tail between the hips. Your dogs skin oils will distribute the lemon eucalyptus oil, just reply twice weekly to repel mosquitoes.
You can use the ready-made spray version as an effective repellant too. Avoid getting it into your dogs eyes because it stings by spraying onto your hands first and rubbing it gently into the fur on your dogs back but not on the face, head, legs, underside or paws.

@@jenjan18 I can't 100% certain without checking but this one is fine: amzn.to/3BmPzgm
@@DanScott1 thanks!
@@jenjan18 Your welcome Jennifer.
Thanks for all the help.
Your most welcome Phistos.
Very astute..very informative.. VERY helpful. Thank you. One grateful human.
Thanks Martin. Glad it helped.
Love you !!!!
Appreciate the love : )
I really appreciate this. We have so many mosquitoes where I live and my puppy loves to be outside but within 5 minutes he is crying because he is just getting eaten up.. I just ordered the neem oil, I can't wait to bring him outside and he just be able to enjoy being outdoors
I can understand that. Just keep regular and apply a finger dab of neem oil to groin, armpitts, under neck, above shoulder blades and hips.
Where did you order the been oil and what brand is best
Neem oil is what I meant to write. Not been
@@DanScott1 I want to keep mosquitoes and fleas or other insects from biting my dog. Can i just apply neem oil or neem oil + coconut oil to the body points you have mentioned. Kindly help me and advise. Thanks
@@simplysurfing To apply topically to your dog it's 1tsp neem oil, 4 tsp olive or coconut oil, mix and apply to affected areas. Can add the lavender (2 drops) to smell better and calm the dog.
Hi we live in Malta which is endemic for sandflies that transmit leishmaniasis to dogs - it’s deadly. What do you recommend please? The vets recommend Frontline Triact drops and scalibor collars. Would love natural options that really work just as well but of course want to keep my pup very safe too. Thanks
Yes those poisons have their own problems. I recommend Neem oil, just dab it on neat in the usual places. Any sandfly touches neem it's over. Try mixing neem oil 5:1 with carrier oil like olive oil, add a drop or 3 of something nice smelling like lavender or mint and rub over the skin where sandflies attack. Neem oil: amzn.to/3iV0Igq
Perfect for ticks/sandflies/mozzies/lice. Good for skin too. Smells a bit nutty/garlicky hence the added nice smelling oils if that bothers you.
Hi love your videos
I’ve bought the already made lemon eucalyptus repellent … how many times a week should I use it on my dog ? Thank you so much
Try it several times weekly or before walks where insects are an issue.
Have you heard of cistus incanus (sometimes called rockrose) for tick/flea prevention? This is a mediterranean herb that I stumbled upon for human health benefits (breaking up biofilms in mouth/digestive system, antibacterial, anticancer, antiviral, tons of antioxidants, etc) and then I read that it is great for preventing ticks and fleas for cats and dogs in addition to all the wonderful internal benefits. I've read you should start 10 wks of regular use before tick season, so we're starting now as a mouth rinse tincture after I brush his teeth and he seems to enjoy it. Thought I'd share in case it was new to you too ;)
Very exciting, thank you for sharing. I'm researching this pretty little pink spring flower. Not heard of it for fleas/ticks. My go to for that is Neem oil: amzn.to/3iV0Igq
and incidentally, Neem Bark Powder: amzn.to/2ULzroL for teeth cleaning... myself too.
Wonderful share, thank you. Let me know your results while I do some more research on it myself.
can these recipes also be used for humans for pest control?
Hi Janice, yes they certainly can. 100% natural.
Can inuse Neem everyday on my dogs?? Mosquitoes are HORRIBLE and one my babies has a suture still healing
Just rubbed my pup down with half a cup of coconut oil/ 1 drop of tea tree/ 2 drops of eucalyptus/ 2 drops of oil of oregano and a teaspoon of baking soda. Diatomaceous earth on beds and carpets. Hopefully this will help. Seems to be.✌️
Will pick up some cedar oil next time I'm out.
Sounds like a plan. Should make a difference and the cedar is good.
Hi Dan, first thanks for the informative video. I've read the comments below, and saw another parent asks a repellent for sandflies, which can transmit leishmaniasis.
To be sure; 5 drops of neem oil on 1 tablespoon of carrier oil (such as grapeseed, olive, coconut oil etc.) and additional 1-3 drops of lavender oil to reduce the intense smell of neem oil for the dog's discomfort. Is this the right ratio to use?
We've come across some information online that adding citrus or eucalyptus oils also helps to repel. Do you have any knowledge of these oils can be unnecessary or harmful? Thanks in advance.
Yes that's right. The Lavender is for the human who may not like the smell.
Citrus and Eucalyptus work but neem oil is fool proof. You can those oils like the lavender.
Hey Dan! Can I use coconut oil instead of grape seed oil as a carrier oil?
Yes just keep over 25C/75F so the coconut oil doesn't go hard. Coconut oils good for the skin too.
@@DanScott1 Thank you so much ❤😊

Hi Jose, this one is excellent: amzn.to/3tR8HyI
Yes you can use it in the corner/dog cage.
How do you make the spray for the lemon eucalyptus?
Lemon Eucalyptus Oil: amzn.to/3KoIXE4

@@DanScott1 thanks for the reply 😊 the mixture to dab on i understood and I see now that you have a product to buy that is a spray. I wasn't sure if I missed the directions to mix the spray at home or not. Thanks again for all the info you provided in the video!!!!!
@@vntrgirl Your welcome. Yes one home made option and two ready to buy options mentioned in the video.
Hi Dan, I'm new to your channel and feel very fortunate to have found you ! I have 2 little dogs, a 5 lb. Papillon and a 9 lb. Papillon/chi mix. I've been searching for natural insect repellent and found you ! I've purchased Neem oil, Cedar oil & Lemon Eucalyptus oil. I'd like to use them all if possible but don't know a formula. I'm wondering which of these would be most effective a carrier oil. I have Coconut oil, Olive oil, Safflower oil, Sunflower oil. I also purchased a 2oz bottle with an eye dropper. We spend 3 months in South Texas and the fleas, ticks and a Mexican Kissing Bugs that causes Chagus are very bad. Because of this we only take our dogs out for a quick walk and don't allow them on the grass. Kindly Advise, Thanking you, Mary
The Olive oil is the best for this use. With Neem on the dogs, they won't get bothered, good for the skin too. It's works on you too if needed. Cedar oil is also quite relaxing.
If i am using coconut oil as a carrier what should be the proportion of neem oil n coconut oil?? N how frequently am i supposed to use it ??
All oils are in the same ratio quoted in the video. Use once at least weekly, maybe twice if needed.
You can just spot the neem oil on in the usual places, groin region, armpits, between hips and shoulders.
I'm using Black Walnut and Wormwood tincture to rid my Golden Retriever of Giardia. Also, your suggestion to use Neem Oil with with Grapeseed Oil as an insect repellent is working out very well. Question: Will any of the above treatments guard against heartworm? If not, can you suggest a holistic treatment for heartworm?
Neem is a strong heartworm protection. You could run a 28 day protocol once yearly. The present protocol will take care of heartworm too.
@@DanScott1 Thanks much for the advice, Dan! I'll use the present protocol (50 percent mix of Neem and Grapeseed Oil over two 14-day cycles with a week off in between. For safety's sake, should I repeat this process throughout every spring, summer and fall when Insects are roaming around? Or is the once yearly option sufficient? Great to hear that Neem Oil is also a solid heartworm deterrent. I'm amazed at how this natural, safe, and inexpensive treatment keeps the nasty insects away.
@@markwille414 Mark, I'm sorry, I meant Black Walnut and Wormwood tincture for the heartworm internally (neem is for topical use for fleas, ticks etc).
Yes once annually is enough in my opinion and in the late summer.
Thanks to India scientists for neem knowledge over the years, amazing uses (just don't use if breeding as it's a disrupter in this regard).
Let me know you read this reply and correction.
@@DanScott1 Yes, I read your reply and correction, Dan. Thanks. I'll be finishing up the Black Walnut and Wormwood tincture application for Giardia early next month. Good to know that this late summer, one-time application will also take care of heartworm. You've saved me considerable $$ I would have shelled out for harmful vet meds that don't work. Really glad I found you!
@@markwille414 I'm happy for your dog too! Win-win.
I’ve been researching a lot regarding black walnut for a natural preventative for heart worms. I want to get my daschunds off of conventional medicine. Is this safe? What kind of dosage is best daily so it doesn’t harm them? I have 6 that range from 5- 15 pounds.
Black Walnut, Clove & Wormwood Extract: amzn.to/2S8paBE
1 drop smallest dog, 2 drops largest dog. Works great for worms and far safer than vet poison. Any distress, you'll know, back off. As long as they are generally healthy with no liver or kidney issues should be fine. Have treated several thousand dogs with virtually no issues.
@@DanScott1 everyday?
@@user-os2xx9cm1f You give the drops in food once daily for 14 days, then stop 7 days, then another 14 days and finished. It's this long to make sure all eggs, young and adults are expelled.
Doctor Hi,what do you say about sheep, goat and cattle lungs?are they muscle or organ meat?are they good food?
They are organ meats so add as 10% of a raw food meal. Thay are good to feed for variation in the diet.
@@DanScott1 Thanks dear doctor.

Is there something for flys ?
Nothing specific but neem will put flies off landing on the dog.
I'm buying the neem oil today with your link . My dog has lice, I was considering advantage topical solution but I want to try neem oil first. Will neem oil kill dog lice. Would cedar oil be effective to kill lice
Neem will kill the lice 100%. Mix with olive/coconut oil 4:1 and rub into affected areas. Great for skin health too. I've used neem for lice on dogs and kids for 20 years. Rub well in, leave for 1 hour, then wash off with gentle shampoo.
Cedar is effective at warding off ticks/fleas/lice, not sure about killing lice 100% like neem.
@Kim Williams Sure no worries. That would be 4 teaspoons full of olive/coconut oil mixed with one teaspoon of Hemp oil 4:1
If you want double the overall amount because you need more, then it's eight teaspoons full of coconut or olive oil to two tespoons full of Neem oil.
@Kim Williams Yes it can but first try 3:1. That's 3 parts carrier oil and one part Neem and let it soak in for an hour or two.
I once used it at this mix when My dog was stung by a wasp and blew up in welts all over his body and head with closed eyes and he was panicking. So I threw him in the bath tub and rubbed in the mix all over for an hour untill everything calmed down. An hour later he was normal agin.
I would say you could use it neat topically no problem but start at 3:1 first as this is still strong and does soak into the skin to kill mange mites that bury thenselves into the skin.
You can then dab some on neat around the lower body to hopefully ward off further attacks.
@Kim Williams If you need to but work at lower ratios like 4:1 or 5:1.
It does kill lice, in fact any sucking insect it touches is not long for this life. Also great on school kids with lice in the hair, worked every time for me.
First try dabbing some on in the places these lice attack as generally they won't go near the dog with some on. It's a bit nutty/garlicky smelling so you might need to add some pleasant oil like cedar/peppermint.
@Kim Williams Yes give as much to cover the whole dog, just keep to the proportions of each ingredient but add more of each.
What about ACV??
Pretty average. Neem oil - amazing!
I went thru the full video multiple times....but his whispering voice tone drowns out some words and im unable to make out the full process properly. Can someone advise what sort of homemade solution can i load into a spray bottle and spray onto my doberman or on the floor around him at least to prevent all sorts of crawling insects and flies/mosquitos from biting him. Plz help my dog is getting bumps on his body due to insect bites.
Ok, here's the solution: Get the following..
Neem oil: amzn.to/3iV0Igq
Castil Soap: amzn.to/3zJkF0k
Organic Lavender Oil - amzn.to/36laJRE
To that spray bottle you have, add 20% neem oil, 5% castil soap, the rest is warm water (76%) and 10 drops of lavender oil, mix up and spray all insect infected areas and the dog, everywhere except eyes. Can repeat following day if needed then make a new batch when needed.
You can touch the screen on the upper right corner the cc appear touched and you will be able to read
Apple cider vinegar will that work
It does pretty well actually.
Are these remedies safe for cats?
Some are some are not. Let me know specifically and I'll check.
Thanks for responding so quickly. All that you mentioned above. I have neem and the lemon eucalyptus. Also, jojoba, cedar/cedarwood, and grapeseed oils. Shea butter, too.
@@michiel2046 The neems fine, not eucalyptus.
The best essential oils that are safe for cats are rosemary, copaiba, helichrysum, oregano, frankincense and cedarwood essential oil. Cats can also tolerate chamomile, lavender, thyme and valerian essential oils at very diluted concentrations.
Grapeseed is fine as a carrier oil.
@@DanScott1 you are the best! Thank you for your help. 😊
