Found this video 2 years ago for a fishing trip. The spray worked so well that now I was searching for this video again cause Mosquitos are so bad right now. Stuff REALLY works, and smells good, THank you so much!!!
I love this! I am a chemist and I want to let you know DONT put essential oils in plastic bottles. They will react with the plastic. Some of those reaction products could be worse for you than the products on the shelf!! And protected from light is much better as well!! Light breaks those essential oils down
Thanks for the reminder!! I knew that, but forgot why I bought all those glass spray bottles...😏 Glad I did!
What do you suggest instead? Even the glass bottles have plastic lids and tubes?
So, you're saying to put this mixture into colored glass containers, right?
@@ardyrides834 I put them in brown glass containers
Im glad I read the comments or I wouldn't have know
Witch Hazel 1/2 cup
Vodka/Alcohol 1 Tablespoon
1/2 cup water
Vegetable glycerine 1 teaspoon
30 drops bergamot oil
30 drops cedar oil
10 drops ea of lemon, eucalyptus, lavender and rosemary oil.
What was that tick stuff she was talking about. What other
alcohol can you use
@@mistyjames5193 rubbing alcohol
@Misty James you can also use grain alcohol
@@j.elle912 Thank you!
Thank you.
Just a FYI: bergamot and lemon are both citrus oils that will make your skin hyper reactive to UV rays. People have gotten very serious burns this way. Citronella, contrary to what the name suggests, is not from a citrus fruit, so that's fine.
I would leave those two out of the recipe if you plan to be wearing this bug repellant on sunny days. Instead of the bergamot, use geranium, like WellnessMama, and instead of the lemon, try lemongrass essential oil, which also has bug repellent properties.
The other option is to go ahead and use the citrus oils, and then just spray your bug spray on your clothes and not your skin. If you're going to do that, you could even add some pennyroyal oil, which is a powerful bug repellant, but too strong for skin. Maybe leave out the glycerine, which isn't great for some fibers.
Those are my thoughts, hope they're helpful!
Thanks for your very helpful comment !! Have you used this yourself ? And what about our faces ? Won’t mosquitoes still try to get to our faces since most people won’t be spraying this on their face ?
You can get bergaptene free bergamot
Why would anyone try to change this woman’s recipe. I find that ignorant. Get your own uTube Chanel.
I would suggest using a dark colored glass bottle so that the essential oils dont go bad! Thank you so much for giving us these tips!!
Any suggestions as to where to purchase dark colored bottles?
@@PHamm54 i think one of our natural food sores or brewery supplies sell them. Hope this helps.
I agree. Considering the fact that that’s also how the oils themselves are packaged, that would be a good idea. Some plastic bottles leach into the liquid inside as well. One idea is to store the mixture in a dark glass bottle and then transfer a little bit of it at a time into a small plastic spray bottle.
If you go out in the sun right after putting any citrus oils on your skin, you will get a severe burn. Leave the citrus out. I saw a child on the news that had been burned from citrus. They recommend you wait an hour after topical use before going into direct sun light.
Not for nothing, but if you are using them, consistently, during the summer months, it isn’t going to “go bad”. I have oils, and they are in dark bottles. I use them in sprays, that I use daily. My sprays go quickly, and so far, I have had nothing, “ go bad”. Now, if I was making up massage oils, and used a carrier oil, I would definitely use a dark bottle. Because, the carrier oils could go rancid, before being used, since I don’t use them, as often. Even so, if I was a massage therapist, I would have less need for a dark bottle, because I would be using them more often. Of course, you would definitely want to keep them out of direct sun.
I watched both your videos on this recipe. Made up a batch and the first night I used it over at my neighbors house. We all sat out by the pool and not a single bite. Smells great. Now my Mom who lives in the woods uses this recipe and I've even given a travel bottle to a fellow gardener. Thanks from deep in the heart of Texas!
It's really that good! Haven't had a single mosquito bite all year!
Just got to Houston for some work looking up at diy bug repellant I started getting bit in Louisiana. And now I need to repelle the wasps as well
What type of bottles did you use? Comments here are saying don't use plastic
Down by the bayou need a LOT , also hope it works for horseflies👍🏻. Wearing long pants and sleeves and was still getting eaten up. Thank you. I didn’t know about the glass bottles.
I got lost when I heard that vodka is needed but then relaxed after I heard that only one spoon will be wasted
I live in the Tropics on the Pacific coast of Mexico. Right now it's rainy season when there are lots of mosquitoes. I discovered a few years ago that if I dab lavender essential oil on strategic spots on my arms and legs that it alone keeps mosquitoes away. It works much better than commercial products and doesn't leave my skin feeling greasy. While I don't doubt the benefits of the spray recipe presented in this video, essential oil can be expensive, especially if you are using so many different types. I just make sure the lavender essential oil is the real thing and not a synthetic product.
Strategic spots being pulse points?
@@florencesouthard6804 I just dab the lavender essential oil at my ankles, calves of my legs (because I'm usually wearing shorts), back of upper arms, forearms and inside of forearms... anywhere I typically get mosquito bites. Just try it and adjust locations where you dab the oil as needed. Friends have told me it works well for them too.
💞Thank You for posting Sir ❣️
Can I put a couple dabs of lavender oil on my face ? Got bit twice on my face yesterday.
I too have used diluted lavander oil and water mix and it works.
Back when I was in the U.S. Marine Corps, we used Skin So Soft as a bug repellent. It works amazingly good.
Yup
Skin so soft from Avon?
@@Moon_lovelyme yea good stuff ..Worked for us
I used skin so soft too, they should name it skin so delicious, it didn't work for me at all.!
My mom always put that on us.
Carefull ya'll. The usual Bergamot essential oil and Lemon essential oil are phototoxic if you use too much.
If you want to avoid that, buy the bergaptene-free Bergamot or also called Bergamot FCF essential oil, and steam-distilled Lemon essential oil (not cold-pressed lemon).
OR
You can still use the usual Bergamot at a maximum of 0.4% ratio of the whole batch.
And the usual cold-pressed Lemon at a maximum of 2% ratio of the whole batch.
Knowledge is power. Be safe.
Thank you for this information!
Knowing this, I'm not using bergamot .
Just don’t put it on until you go out in the evening! 😊
Mosquitoes LOVE me! Just bought the ingredients and can’t wait to try this. Thank you for posting the recipe and links! UPDATE: This works so well!!! Not a single bite and smells good. This has been literally life changing for me!

💜 I have used essential oils for many years, this is a great recipe however one should always use glass bottles as the oils can have a reaction releasing chemicals from the plastic which can degrade your oils. Also some oils are photosensitive and should not come in contact with your skin if you are going to be in the sun. Thank you for sharing 💜
To eliminate mosquitos, fill 5 gallon pail 1/2 water. Buy floating mosquitos donuts at the hardware store. Float one in the water. This will not only kill the mosquitos but the eggs as well. Put out several buckets to cover large area and enjoy your outdoors.
@Rochesterhome, great post. Anyone who wants more info on this method for eliminating mosquitos can search UA-cam for "Mosquito Buckets of Doom" or ""Mosquito Buckets.". I recommend using only a quarter or a half of one of the floating mosquitos donuts per 5 gallon bucket and adding a new one regularly.
Add vanilla to keep gnats away.
CHICAGO, August 27 - Researchers report that nepetalactone, the essential oil in catnip that gives the plant its characteristic odor, is about ten times more effective at repelling mosquitoes than DEET - the compound used in most commercial insect repellents.
Can you link an article?
I tried the catnip oil last week... you didnt mention that ALL of the CATS would chase me down......😂
This is nice to know because I'm allergic to DEET.
I'll have to try this, my sons can't run around shirtless without getting eaten alive by mosquitos!
A note about essential oils...they're not regulated by the EPA/FDA, which means the product labeling isn't checked for accuracy, which means companies have been caught straight-up lying about what's in those little bottles. Cheaper oils are often mostly carrier oil (olive, vegetable, sunflower, etc.) sometimes with synthetic scent added, and there's no real essential oils involved at all. You have to look into who you're buying them from! Transparency is very important; if you can't get info on their facility and distillation process, don't buy.
Skin so soft from Avon with Lavender oil mixed in it works well too, Ive used it my whole life. Thanks mom!
Just making sure. You are saying this works as a mosquito repellant? If yes, does this need to be applied all over, or not?
@@hawaiinrainbow yes, SSS can be used as a mosquito repellent (even without adding lavender), and yes, spray it wherever protection is needed.
Don’t leave that in your garden in that plastic bottle. If exposed to the sun it should be in a dark glass bottle but I wouldn’t leave it in the sun at all.
Did she say she leaves it in her garden?
First, I want to say, thank you, thank you for putting ingredients/amounts in the description!!! So many videos drag you along for 10 minutes before ever hinting at the ingredients or how much to use, thank you, you are obviously genuinely trying to provide helpful information.
Second, you say that mosquitos "like" you....... HAHA! Believe me when I tell you, that they ADORE me.... mosquitoes will migrate across 5 state lines to bite me.... something about my blood/chemistry is irresistible.... evidently, my blood is more addictive than crack cocaine... Here, where I live, they literally arrive with 2 gallon gas cans and a funnel to siphon my blood....they look like desert hummingbirds. Thanks again for the video, I will be giving it a try.
❤️😂😅 I’m your competition when it comes to those dern bugs!!
I’ve been using your recipe all summer on myself and my family and it works!!! Way better than any store bought ones! 😃 so thanks for this! ❤️
New sub! Love that you put the recipe in the notes.
Can't wait to try it. Besides the fact that the essential oils will degrade in sunlight, some essential oils will actually eat away at plastic. So when using essential oils glass bottles are always best especially when applying on skin.
That salad looks delicious
I just walk around on fire… they don’t like open flames…
Ya see? There are answers for everything on UA-cam!
AND I have actually been growing all of those plants for this reason, 🤞 this year is the year I get a massive harvest on them 😍
Bravo! THAT is inspiring!
Do you post videos? I would to know about diy essential oils.
Instead of buying it, GROW IT! Steam and blend: Lemongrass, tumeric leaves, mint, vanilla + cinnamon (for gnats and mosquitoes), rosemary, lavender to name a few.
Thanks Rachel! I've been wanting to find a homemade recipe. I will try this in the Spring :)
Colorado has had such a rainy season, which has brought on a ton of mosquitos! I am so stoked to try this natural option and you’ve gained a subscriber! I’m stoked to see more from your channel! Praying and sending good vibes for growth and an increase in your areas of need around your channel! ♥️✌🏻
Thanks for the sharing! I would like to add an important detail that citrus essential oils like lemon, bergamot, etc. can be photosensitive* up to how they are produced. I recommend you check if your essential oil is photosensitive if you are gonna go out and get exposed to the sun or simply go for other options rather than citrus family.
Thank you so much! I made a batch using the ingredients I had on hand and it really works. Excited to purchase the additional oils and share the vlog with family and friends.
I watched 5 videos before I seen yours and it's the easiest to understand to make. Thanks

I made this, because I too, am loved by chiggers, mosquitoes, and every flying/ biting critter.. Within about a month, it has reduced the amount to only one or 2 bug bites every couple of days (vs. 10-15 every couple of days). I use both geranium and bergamot oil in mine as well as cedarwood and that combination has really worked! Thank you!
Excited about making this spray, can't wait to try it. Thank you for the recipe!!!! 😁
Thank you for your video! I just want to mention that bergamot and lemon are citrus essential oils , all of which can make you photo-sensitive. I learned this the hard way when used them in a homemade body lotion years ago. I went to the beach and got the worst burn of my life where I had blisters under many layers of peeling skin after five days of peeling! I have a naturally olive complexion and rarely burn otherwise, even at the beach. Otherwise I'm going to try your formula. 😊😊
I would never use the citrus ones on my skin!!!
I made this last summer but never really used it. I have flies on the patio this year and this is fantastic! I spray down the cushions and underside of umbrellas and the bugs leave! Really this is great! No mosquito bites either. Thank you so much.
spraying the umbrella and cushions! very clever. thanx
Thank you!!! Exactly what I was looking for. Tons of ticks and mosquitos around here!!!!
I appreciate the brevity of this video.
Thank you Rachel - I am a bug buffet! Anything that bites within 5 miles knows when I am outside. Love the idea of a natural repellent. I always have been concerned about chemical absorption and I am definitely going to try this recipe! It so funny - I just received my first order of Plant Therapy oils so I think this was meant to be!
Fantastic! Hopefully it has what you need
If not I will order some... they are pretty reasonable...
"Bug buffet" SAME! 😂😂😂😂❤
@@17...20 me too,, in FL I barely close my house door and already I have 2 bites. Also we have yellow flies the bite is super painful and super itchy and can last for over a week. They are v aggressive and follow you into your car to terrorize you while driving.
I love Plant Therapy myself! They are very affordable and come in 30ml sizes, which are often hard to find unless you want to use a fragrance oil as opposed to a natural essential oil. I also love Wellness mama!
Hello this is awesome. I have most of the essential oils and I do have everything else. Will be making some this week because we are starting to get up in the 80's again. Thank you for writing the recipe in the description box. God bless stay safe and have a wonderful day

The plastic will break down your essential oils .
I made a similar spray with some varying essential oils, but they all do about the same thing. Cinnamon and clove and peppermint oils all work great in it, too
The mosquitos will avoid you but husbands and small children will follow you around, with fragrances like that. :)

Thanks so much love ❤️ it. However, Bergamot is not good in sunshine on skin as it gives prickly heat. Excellent repellent I’m definitely making it

I have made my own for about three years now without the glycerin or vodka. So if you do t have those you don’t need them. I also add a few more types of oils. Cheers.
so just EOs and water and witch hazel? Does ratio matter much?
I was wondering that myself. I don't drink alcohol so didn't want to buy it and have no other use for the glycerine. I have used a spray with just witch hazel and peppermint and eucalyptus with good success but am always open to trying something new! The witch hazel is so refreshing on a hot summer day!
Kimberly Guimond - Can you please share your recipe? Thanks.
The glycerin is a preservative, and the alcohol helps emulsify the essential oil, as water and oil don't mix, without an emulsifier.

This works extremely well for mosquito repellent: myrrh resin gum oil (20%) + jojoba oil. Of course, this can be homemade. But it can also be purchased -- NOW brand essential oils makes this (small glass bottle). This is easy to apply on legs, arms, etc without any discomforting effects. 💜

I've gotten eaten up with ants and I don't know what else. So glad I was looking through your videos. I have huge welts from the mystery biter. I'll be making the bug juice asap.
Spider bite maybe?
Catra Campolieto - Don't know what kind of ants are biting you but here in the South we deal with fire ants. They are nasty little creatures. Blend some Cajeput essential oil with a carrier oil - 5% dilution rate. Please use a quality brand EO.
You can also use Plantain leaves (a weed that grows just about everywhere). Crush them up, mix with a little water to make a paste and apply to bite. In emergency, chew up a leaf (yes, put it in your mouth). The crushed/chewed leaves mixed with your saliva and applied to your bite(s) will take away the sting of the bite.
For wasp/hornet/bee stings, use Blue Cypress EO diluted in carrier oil.
Bergamot causes photosensitivity. Also EOs come in dark glass for a reason. EOs are wonderful but you need to educate yourself on their use.
Thanks for sharing this recipe for bug spray. Glad it works so well for you. I understand y'all have a big mosquito problem in MI. Since I am not out and about so much anymore I will have to pass on it because of the expense of the oils. I don't do anything with these oils so it would be out of the question for me. Have a Blessed day.
Will test this out ASAP. Thank you.
Great work:apropos chemistry and plastikbottles, for the same reason we should not,as seen in the film store our essential oil bottles lying flat in a box, they will"eat up" slowly the plastikclosure of the little essesntial oil bottle from within...
I use Listerine and water for bug repellent, regular Listerine one part Listerine two parts water.
Thank you so much for this bug spray! I will think of you every time I use it! 💕
Great spray, thanks for sharing.
Lemon and bergamot are both photosensitive. I would not recommend those for a topical application.
Some brands of witch hazel already have alcohol in it. So you probably wouldn’t need to add the vodka/alcohol. Essential Oils don’t need to be left in too much heat, they will lose their beneficial properties, especially citrus based ones like lemon & bergamot. Also, read the “other ingredients in your oils, some are not of a quality that you would want on your skin, because the skin is highly absorbent, akin to ingestion. So if you want to stay away from “chemical based EOs” don’t waste money on cheap brands! You get what you pay for.
Plant Therapy oils are all 100% therapeutic grade, high quality oils, they're just more affordable, because the company isn't MLM.
@@sharihenderson7621 Thank you much. Great info. I didn't know!🦋💖🦋
@@barbaraclayton6053 - You're welcome! Since there are no FDA regulations on essential oils, companies can do pretty much whatever they want. Always about making an extra buck, many of them will stretch these oils with synthetics (smell close to the same as original oils but not the same - just can't do what nature does naturally :) )
It frustrates me that so many consumers are giving these unethical companies their hard earned money, and putting synthetics on their body.

That looks like an amazing recipe, I am going to try it..thank you! One thing to note is that bergamot causes photosensitivity, so if you are going to be in the sun it can create a burning reaction on your skin. May be that geranium is a better option.
