Just bought this yacht master yesterday from an AD. This watch was never even on my radar. Seen it in person for the first time. Had to get it. Looks even better in person. Rhodium dial is incredible
I own both and can say there’s no wrong answer here. That said, the YM is just one step up on the Sub. Plus, it seems that everyone these days wears a Sub. The fact you don’t see the YM much in the wild is a big draw for me
I’m lucky enough to own both of these beautiful watches. I agree with Dylan, the Yacht Master is stunning and is a little more dressy but can easily be dressed down. The Sub does wear slightly larger and is slightly more casual. Both are wonderful timepieces but I bought the Yachty before the sub. But personally, I think the rhodium Yacht Master is one of the most gorgeous watches I’ve ever seen.
I own them both. Both are fantastic pieces. That said, I prefer the YM simply because its a little more rare in the wild. You see the Submariner on so many wrists so it’s nice to be a little more unique with the YM
I collected mine last week.....I'm absolutely loving it. The 'slate' dial with those ice blue hands are memorising. It's my second Rolex. I have a 'Pepsi' on oyster.
Submariner looks just….normal. The bezel looks similar to many other brands’ divers. If you want to “fit in”, then sub. If you want to “stand out”, go with YM
I commend you for this absolutely excellent review! Usually, I click off of watch reviews and lose focus because they’re either boring or just poorly made. Yours was great in every way. Very informational, intriguing, well made and entertaining all throughout. Thank you sir! 😊
Great video keep them coming. I must say that the Yatch-Master 40 is growing on me! I was never a fan of the bold round numerals on the bezel however, when compared to the submariner they look more finessed and complete, given that the case is rounded off as well. Additionally, you mentioned the case differences. One of the best/worse things I done was compare the 5-digit and 6-digit sub cases, and since then I fallen out of love with the 6-digit - the balance between lug taper, lug size, and bracelet size is just incorrect (imo).
The Yacht-Master with the blue sunburst dial is the one to go for. That version has the red sweep second hand and red lettering which is glorious. The rhodium dial and blue second hand appears a little subdued in comparison.
The easiest way to define these two watches is, the Submariner is worn by the captain of the super yacht whereas the Yacht Master is worn by the owner of the super yacht.
Great review. You should have mentioned the rhodium dial, it’s a very precious rare metal. I own that YM watch currently, previously owned the Sub-c, no question I prefer the YM due to the curved shape of the case and that beautiful dial with blue accents. It’s a stunner in person. Sub is a tried n true design, great watch, but a dime a dozen. You won’t see many YMs out in the wild.
The dial in this YM is not made of rhodium but brass painted in rhodium colour. It replaces the YM 116622 from 2012 with a solid platinum dial and a 4 years production run. So there was a downgrade from platinum dial to brass dial unfortunately. Does this detail matter in a dressy luxury watch? Well yes, kind of, this is not a utilitarian Sub.
@@lafireteamplx3400 The Sub is more utilitarian looking with little to no use of precious metals, yet still a luxury watch of course. The YM is the more luxurious take, where precious metals matter more. So I consider the slate dial a downgrade from the solid platinum dial. Would still wear one, dont get me wrong.
LOL man you are completely clueless! The “rhodium” dial on the YM is not MADE out of rhodium. It’s called the rhodium dial because of the color. You are the typical yachtmaster owner who knows absolutely nothing about watches, but bought YM because it’s shinier and more expensive.
Honestly it’s going to be very difficult to get the sub for retail, in the grey market you would be paying the same as the YM 116622, a nicer watch in my opinion. Furthermore, you only have to wait a few months on the waiting list for the 116622. Submariners are overrated and mainstream, in my opinion 116622 rhodium dial tops the sub any day.
Take the blue pill, buy the Sub and sleep with the peace of mind you have what everybody else wants. If everyone aspires to wear one, it must be good, right? Take the red pill, buy the Yacht-Master and step into another dimension, a world of sophistication where fine connoisseurs can appreciate the countless subtleties of such an exquisite timepiece (there's a reason Rolex charge considerably more). No one will understand it but you don't follow the herd. Instead you go your own way.
Looks like you need serious help. For some reason when I went to the AD to pick up the Daytona it didn’t look good on my wrist. It didn’t fit my style mentally. So I bought it and Flipped it for cash and got this guy. So in the end I paid nothing. Thats the beauty of Rolex. If I do decide to ad to my collection pre-ceramics gmts are 1st on my list.
As a former submariner and an offshore sailor, I had mixed feeling about which one to buy. Eventually I focus on the current and future and purchased the Yachtmaster some 17 years ago. I still have the submariner on my wish list. Incidentally my Yachtmaster is just finishing a major refurb at the dealer - I wear it every day and it gets knocked about. The cost of the refurb is about half the purchase cost but reflects quite a lot of wear and tear (and damage). Which one I prefer? Yachtmaster 1st and Submariner a very close second.
Love the vid fortunate enough to have had 35yrs to decide on my next rolex bought the non date 5513 at 18yrs of age still with me. My new bi metal rose gold yacht sitting in AD,s safe having arrived 6 months early waiting for lockdown to end .
So I am looking to purchase my first Rolex within the next year or so, I have always loved the Submariner ever since I was a kid and planned for this to be my first. After seeing videos on the Yacht Master Rhodium dial I cannot get this off my mind. For someone to look to purchase their first Rolex with being able to dress this up with a suit to being able to dress it doing with a t-shirt, would the Yacht Master work?
I have a yachtmaster in blue and am explorer I which is black. The color theme is very different and I thought this through before waiting on a list for either of them, Both can be worn dressed up or down, I tend to wear them both more casually and with smart casual wear. I have a good size collection and tend to use leather dress straps for suited attire.
just bought one today in rose gold choc dial 40....absolutely elegant classy and super rich.....fell in love the moment I saw it....and bought it ...my first Rolex. To be honest o wanted to buy GMT /skydweller two tone...... but the waiting period was rediculous .... but then while I was sitting at the ROLEX AD this watch caught my eye Sitting in the shelf and when I tried it in i felt kicking myself as to why dint I shortlisted this one ??? Honestly speaking even if they gave me the gmt/skydweller even at that very moment I would’ve gone for YM as it’s a stunner....I honestly feel it’s got all the best features Of all rolexes put in one.....love the polished lugs... the size is perfection (it’s a watch midway to datejust and gmt in terms of style size class and finess )and it’s the watch which is on both sporty and dressier side. You have to see this watch in person to justify the awesomeness of this watch fellas.
Late to this video but you are a natural - great presentation skills. Really enjoyed the comparison. I have the Sub and have just put my name down for the Yacht-Master. Thanks!
As long as either watch functions as a diving watch - there should not be any real comparison between the two except for size. I always favored the Yacht Master because of the size but the Submariner may be more practical as a diver's watch because of the white on black contrasting. I love both watches! The more practical of the professional Rolexes for the mariner or pilot is the GMT as it is made for navigation as it tells four different time zones as needed to aid in determining your LHA and GHA as well as what time it is where you abode if not on your sloop. The only real use of a Submariner or Yacht Master is for diving other than telling the local time. Admittedly, I use an "entry-level" forty-year-old (recently serviced by RUSA) Rolex Date for ocean navigation; I only wish that it had the protective horns at the winding button. It is great for GHA plotting as it keeps -0.625 seconds per day.
The problem with that is they all end up looking the same, Subs and YMs. No more clear differentiation. Look at the YM42 with its black ceramic bezel, it looks like a utilitarian diver, not like a 27,000 euros luxury piece. A precious metal bezel with raised markers and numerals is what made the YM since 1992.
The Yacht Master has really grown on me in recent months and I'm seriously thinking of getting out of my Black GMT to get the Yacht Master. I don't travel that much and the Yacht Master kicks up the dress appeal for me and it's less busy dial from the GMT. I already have a Omega Seamaster 300 Pro so I don't need a diver. Very goo video.
Do you think the YM 40mm will be discontinued in a few years? The fact that platinum is expensive and the production of 42mm Titanium YM increases this expectation.

Thank you very much for a detailed review on the Rolex Yacht-Master 40 and Rolex Submariner, very informative. I like both watches and I prefer the Yachtmaster with the blue dial. The Yachtmaster is understated which I like very much. Great channel and looking forward to more reviews.
Great video. The YM is a fantastic and very underrated watch, and I owned one for many years. It is much better to wear at work than the Sub, since it is dressier. But the resale value of the YM is terrible. Rolex really needs to relaunch and redesign the YM.
The resell value of yachtmasters is going up. Especially the newer ones. My Chrono24 estimate shows my new yachtmaster has a higher estimated value above retail than my explorer I
And because the Yacht Master has a TRIPLOCK screwdown and rated at 100m/330ft. you can really dive with it. I only dive to 30ft- 75ft most times anyway.
Le bracelet gris pour la submariner à la fin est une hérésie. Quant à la yacht master, elle est magnifique mais la quantité de platine est elle suffisante pour justifier son prix ?
IMO the price of the Yacht-Master isn't really anchored to the cost of the precious metal that's gone into making the watch. If that were the case, a Submariner would be selling for 20-25% of the current price tag. You're paying for the brand and the hype, not the metal. It sometimes backfires too. Just look at the Vacheron Constantin Overseas Ultra-Thin 2000V. A gorgeous white gold watch but VC they couldn't manage to sell it because it was considered overpriced for what it was (despite the WG metal). Especially since it was competing directly against the slim alternatives of its holy trinity competitors, i.e. the Patek Nautilus (in steel) and the AP Royal Oak 15202 (in steel).
I've had the 116610LN sub for about 2 months now, had to get it from the grey market and paid a premium to do so...but I love the watch. I've been trying to get the Yacht master 40 steel/plat with blue dial but to no avail, cant even find one on the grey market. I'm a diver and a yachtie so accordingly want both!
I'd doesn't matter what crappy James Bond wore but yes the submariner is better. The black bezel and dial contrasts nicely with the steel case and bracelet.
I‘m the lucky owner of a (yellow) Submarine but no Yacht at the moment. For me as a daily user the Submarine is much more comfortable, stealth and safe than any Yacht whatsoever. You simply cant dive with a Yacht. So I think I should go for the Submariner.
Are you saying that a yellow gold Submariner is stealthy? Technically the YM is waterproof to 100m, so unless you dive a lot deeper than most people, the rating of the watch isn't really stopping you from diving with it.
This is the only Rolex that I would consider. Unfortunately, I already own a diver with blue dial and red accents, so it's hard to justify the purchase 😂
I just don't like the chunky case of the Submariner, it looks like a hexagon with the rounded bezel forcibly bolted on top, sticking like a sore thumb. The Yachmaster averts all that for the most part, it's a beautiful case. It has everything that looks good on the Submariner (dial design, bracelet) and none of the defects.
I can't escape the feeling that the Rolex designers had visions of people chilling out on a billionaire's super yacht in Monte Carlo harbour, rather than of people sailing competitively in a battered and sea-stained racing yacht! But one of the nice things about Rolex sports watches is that they can basically be worn in almost any situation. You could be getting dogs out of a 4X4 and going walking across muddy fields....or at a swish evening reception for diplomats...or at a glitzy wedding...at a business meeting...hanging out with friends...etc... A Rolex sports watch would never really be a howling fashion faux pas, in my opinion.
At my AD the Yachtmaster II is a hotter watch than GMTMaster II, luckily I got a white gold one at retail no wait, so I don't get why it's so unpopular compared to strange looking Pepsi or Batgirl.
Had both and sold both as one was shiny scratch magnet and fragile. The other was just too big and bulky. The end result was my Tudor black bay 58. Have not looked back since! 😉
JAIME TORRES No, the stainless steel bracelet is what gets roughed up, espicially with the high polish links. Ive had mine for a couple years and the platinum bezel is still good/no scratches.👍🏽
This guy struggles to find anything new to say about these watches, everyone and his dog has said all the same things before but I still watched to the end cos I like the YM. I still wear it with a bit of clear tape on the clasp cos I’m a wuss and don’t want scratches
If we follow your logic then we should chose the best Rolex diver, either Sea-Dweller or SD Deepsea. The YM offers a classier and dressier option against the utilitarian nature of the Sub. So it depends on what you want to add to your collection.
The numbers on YM's bezel are too big and there is no illuminated stone on the triangle on bezel (at 12 position). The blue second hand is too eye catching. The polished bracelet will scratch so easily. The rounded edges of the case steered Rolex's character away and made it look like a Breitling even. Considering these points plus the price difference Submariner Date is definitely a better option.
Its more that things have moved on, for me the larger datejusts are just right, dive watches etc need to be bigger, but not as big as super avenger, po chrono etc.
Just bought this yacht master yesterday from an AD. This watch was never even on my radar. Seen it in person for the first time. Had to get it. Looks even better in person. Rhodium dial is incredible

More so when it is on very conservative Rolex watch

As long as either watch functions as a diving watch - there should not be any real comparison between the two except for size. I always favored the Yacht Master because of the size but the Submariner may be more practical as a diver's watch because of the white on black contrasting. I love both watches! The more practical of the professional Rolexes for the mariner or pilot is the GMT as it is made for navigation as it tells four different time zones as needed to aid in determining your LHA and GHA as well as what time it is where you abode if not on your sloop. I had never noticed the curved case on the YM before!! 😮
If they introduced ceramic bezels to the yachtmasters they'd quickly become bestsellers IMO
The problem with that is they all end up looking the same, Subs and YMs. No more clear differentiation. Look at the YM42 with its black ceramic bezel, it looks like a utilitarian diver, not like a 27,000 euros luxury piece.
High precious metal banging about the rigging while yachting. Ha. Wear cocktailing in the harbour. 💪
@@j.burgess4459 well said, and one of many reasons I want one. I can wear it everyday, whether I'm flying, surfing, going to dinner, whatever.
@@j.burgess4459 its called yatchMASTER not sailor. Lol.
At my AD the Yachtmaster II is a hotter watch than GMTMaster II, luckily I got a white gold one at retail no wait, so I don't get why it's so unpopular compared to strange looking Pepsi or Batgirl.
Yatch-Master is just another level🤍
someday
Had both and sold both as one was shiny scratch magnet and fragile. The other was just too big and bulky. The end result was my Tudor black bay 58. Have not looked back since! 😉
So you end up with nothing
@@impexRQ
Lots had happened in a year!!
Proud owner of a BLNR batgirl 😉
Bb58 sold too!!
Why do you only wear watches on a strap?
Great Video Dylan! How about a video tailored for the many people now working from home and the wearing of suits is less common
Yachtmaster all the way
Yacht master all the way.
You played Ahmet Aslan's music in the background, and am not sure if he is aware!
Can the platinum bezel get scratched easily? Thanks
JAIME TORRES No, the stainless steel bracelet is what gets roughed up, espicially with the high polish links. Ive had mine for a couple years and the platinum bezel is still good/no scratches.👍🏽
blownZ713 thank you very much.
Agreed
I've had my yacht-master just over two years and the bezel is unmarked.
@@cliffwheeler7357 Thanks Cliff
I always can't tell the difference between these two watches
try harder
On the wrist it’s night and day
This guy struggles to find anything new to say about these watches, everyone and his dog has said all the same things before but I still watched to the end cos I like the YM. I still wear it with a bit of clear tape on the clasp cos I’m a wuss and don’t want scratches
they are way too similar, the submarimer is 300m divers and is cheaper. theres no competition. yatch master 2 is the only real yatch master
YM2 is cack
If we follow your logic then we should chose the best Rolex diver, either Sea-Dweller or SD Deepsea.
The YM offers a classier and dressier option against the utilitarian nature of the Sub. So it depends on what you want to add to your collection.
@A. B. harsh comment on the YM2
You have to wear both to see the difference. It’s substantially different on the wrist
YM 2 the ugliest watch rolex have ever made IMHO
The numbers on YM's bezel are too big and there is no illuminated stone on the triangle on bezel (at 12 position). The blue second hand is too eye catching. The polished bracelet will scratch so easily. The rounded edges of the case steered Rolex's character away and made it look like a Breitling even. Considering these points plus the price difference Submariner Date is definitely a better option.
could you be more wrong? (answer - no)
You don't understand the nature of the YM.
Do people really go diving 300m in theese watches?Lol😂😂😂
Sorry,yacht master that is!
Sub all day, every day.
YM😍
„yop“-master??? YACHTmaster …
There are two kinds of people. Those who think the Yacht Master is a rich man’s Sub, and those who think the Sub is a poor man’s Yacht Master.
Those gold Yacht-Masters are gaudy. 👎🏻
no they're awesome
All gold watches are
second!
Sunshine SUEN childish
Both too small
you must be a Viking from Scandinavia
Its more that things have moved on, for me the larger datejusts are just right, dive watches etc need to be bigger, but not as big as super avenger, po chrono etc.
@@fredriksvard2603 i understand, but it would've been super cool if you said you're a viking :-)
mike jones Ofc, i play cowbell in amon amarth
38-40 is perfect size - anything more is gaudy and gauche
Yacht master looks kinda cheap. Is don't know why but it looks like some swatch or anything like that.
More childish and not as refined as the sub
😂😂😂
YM is the best Rolex
