Hi Dave... I received the red cable and followed your instructions on the installation of the driver. And... everything works! No problem dowloading or uploading from and to my Puxing radios. Tx a lot for the info! Your "Ask Dave" series is great and I of course subscribed! 73 from Gilles VA2GD
For those that are wondering why you can program some models of your Baofeng UV-5R (Series) and/or your Baofeng UV-82 (Series) of radios and not others within your collection, two primary issues come up over and over again: First, Baofeng changes firmware versions within their radios constantly. That means if you program three newer UV-5R radios (or UV-82 radios) and then attempt to program another UV-5R (or UV-82) that has a different version of firmware, it's NOT going to work (at least not with Baofeng's VIP software or with Chirp). If you are lucky enough to have RT Systems software then you simply do a read from radio (on the different firmware radio), which seems to tell the software what adaptations to make, and then reload your template back to the "different" radio. To answer the follow-up question some of you will have, you can NOT upgrade or change your Baofeng factory firmware, as it's a one time only EPROMM. Even if Baofeng offered that as a service, your cost to pack and ship the radio back to China would cost more that what some of you probably paid for the radio, in addition to whatever cost they would also charge for the firmware update and re-shipment back to you. Second, if you carefully inspect the programming jack holes on your Baofeng radio(s), you may notice that your two holes are NOT always perfectly centered within the jack's location under the mic flip cover. Baofeng's led the way in low cost Chinese radio production, but unfortunately your parents were right, you usually do get what you pay for, so many of you have a mic jack location slightly out of proper alignment which can easily cause your programming cable (regardless of what brand or make you purchased) to NOT completely fit into your mic jack completely, which then provides you with an error code when trying to program the radio. When the holes are even a few millimeters off in the wrong direction it can cause the cable to not completely fit into place. Want to know for sure if your cable is completely inserted into the radio? Cut a 1/4" strip of paper that's about 6" long and insert the centered portion of the paper strip between your two cable prongs (as flat as possible) as you insert your programming cable into your mic jack. Once you think your cable is completely inserted, pull on one end of your 6" piece of paper. If it moves (or worse, comes out completely), your cable is NOT making the proper connection to your Baofeng radio. Now get out your Dremmel tool, remove your cable, and CAREFULLY remove a small amount of plastic from the USB end of the plug that seems to be rubbing against your programming jack. Repeat the paper test until the paper tears into two pieces before the connector lets go - then you know your cable is completely inserted. These two bits of info may not solve the Baofeng radio problems that you are still having, but knowing this info will definitely help you with your troubleshooting. I can't tell you the hundreds of times that customers at the shows we attend insist that their radios must be broken, or that their cables are completed inserted, only to have us show them those assumptions are/were incorrect. That's the end of my free hardware support on radios you purchased elsewhere. 73, Craig
FYI: I was able to use the original Baufeng cable with the Prolific usb chip on windows 10. Installed the prolific driver from Baufeng. It showed up on Com #5. Then I was able to read and program my Wouxun KG-UV9p with Wouxun programing software. But I could not use the Wouxun software to program the Baufeng. I will also get the red cable and driver.
Apparently, this cable works on the Kenwood TH-K20 2M HT. I found this very cable listed on the HRO website. The software for the Kenwood radio is free from the Kenwood website. I'm going to order it and try it on my TH-K20.
Hello. I have a error code from my bj-218 vhf mode. The code says this. Error reading from radio not the amount of data we want. I have no idea how to remedy this problem. 73 ve6 gpt. Gord
I popped the cover off the usb part. Looked at what chip was in it, downloaded the driver and was back to it. My chip was ch340 Arduino based. Using windows 10. Miss xp lol.
I just ordered a Red Cable seeing that I run Windows 10 and down't want the hassle of having to troubleshoot problems. The postage to the UK was only just over $6.
Hi Dave Thank you for your very informative video. As usual you never disappoint me. I have found another solution to the Prolific/Windows 10 incompatibility. I just downloaded Chirp on my Raspberry pi 3 in Linux. And lo and behold no problems. My wouxun programming cable is working a treat. I have just had to reformat my drive and I upgraded to Windows 10. So i have been downloading all my radio programmes again. And good job I saw your video early this week and knew straight away what was the problem. My Raspberry Pi is becoming my computer of choice for most of my radio programmes that works on Linux. Now I have a portable setup which I can run on low power batteries in the field. Keep up the good work.
Hi: I am K6RVD, handle MEL and just purchased the Baofeng UV5RTP radio from ebay and a cable from Amazon. I watched your video on programming the radio but ran into many problems with it. It is very confusing and I do need your help to program it. There is more than I anticipated and becomes very frustrating doing it. Maybe, I made the mistake in purchasing it to begin with. I was hoping it would have been automatically done using the cable. I also live in a very remote area near a small town and not too many repeaters here. Spokane, WA is about 75 miles from where I live. So, in a way, I don't know how to make the radio to function.
i have the baofeng uv-5ra and i have im having problems setting it up and by that i mean like whats the best SQL or best off-set you get the idea but is there a way or cheat to set it up step by step to get talking
Dave, something that bites many people: If you plug the USB cable into a different socket, it will usually be assigned a different COM port number. So folks need to be consistent, always use the same socket, or learn to check the numbers.
Thanks for this video. I haven't tried programming my radios via PC in a long time. The last time I did, I was using Windows XP. So now I'm on Windows 10, and my old cable isn't working. I just ordered a red cable. I also downloaded the driver, and I'm hoping this will all work for me.
Just to be clear.... We can't use the programming cable here, to send data to do PSK31 or any digital modes right? I was hoping that because it plugs into the mic and speaker jack, that it could be used to send/receive sound and PTT...
The cable when in programming mode is actually RS-232 underneath the covers. The cable doesn't carry sound back and forth. The chip that converts USB to RS-232 is actually in the part of the cable that plugs into the USB port.
Thanks for the video. I had recently purchased a cable from Amazon and I couldn't get it to work. It's heading back to Amazon, today. Something else of interest; the software disc that came with it had 2 viruses. I did a Norton virus scan when I put the disk in the computer and Norton indicated there were 2 high risk viruses. I've ordered the "Red" cable and should have it in a couple of days.
The best way I've found is to get a name-brand USB-RS232 adapter from a reputable 1st party company. Then buy (or build!) serial radio programming cables for your radios that "just work" without any funky chips to worry about. Also there can be other issues -- 2 of the 3 Baofeng radios I have had the programming cables refused to work on them. I even had a friend who had a Baofeng and programmed his try and program mine. Apparently the Baofeng radios randomly change so even though they are the same sometimes they are incompatible or something and just don't work for no apparent reason. I suppose that makes sense considering the poor quality of them, all the Baofengs I've had would simultaneously pick up NOAA, hospital pagers, and emergency dispatch while listening to local repeaters across most of the ham band. I've had better luck with TYT on my TH-8000D and TH-UV3R radios working reliably, they not only program consistently but they also have far superior receivers..
Dear Sir kindly advice me how to program an icom icf110 pmr radio with ftdi or cp2102 usb to TTL converter? it is an old radio and icom special programming cable(opc112) operates from the rj45 modular connector for ptt front side of this radio. Rear side it has only a connector for an external speaker.I have a Sony Vaio p3 window 7 32 bit: a laptop without db9 port.
My concern with any custom-programmed driver may be obsoleted by some future Windows "upgrade." The FTDI serial cable I bought for my Yaesu HT worked great with the built-in Windows 10 drivers: no driver installation was needed. I suspect that the FTDI cables for BaoFeng, which range from $15 to $20, will also work with the built-in Windows drivers. Others have noted in this thread that not all BaoFeng UV-5R models have the same firmware in EPROM. You can get the model # by holding down the 3 key while turning on the radio (it flashes for only about a second) and the continuation of the model # by holding down the 6 key while turning on the radio. When using CHIRP, be sure to clone your radio first and then make your changes to that image. Radios with the same version # should work with that CHIRP image, but make a new image for any different version. Also note that your com port will change if you use a different USB port on your computer.
@David Casier > Hi, have had no trouble with the current cable i'm using, however, on the Wouxun (Woxun) i came across an issue. Hi Dave. I just bought a Baofeng RD-5R which comes with a driver free programming USB cable and when I connect the radio to my Windows 10, the computer does not detect the radio and no virtual COM port appears in Device Manager. And of course, the programming software says "Device Not Found". I emailed Radioddity and I'm waiting for support, but in the meantime, do you have any thoughts? Thanks.
The problem with these Prolific chipsets is not just them being counterfit. It's also about the PL230x series coming in different revisions and only the latest revision gets an official Windows 10 driver from Prolific. You can however use the Windows 7 prolific driver and force it on the device. That will do just fine and dandy. However, i deem it unacceptable, that a major operating system series, that had USB support for over 18 years, still does not manage to handle many USB device classes specified in the USB standard by USBSIG. Microsoft is a member of the USBSIG, so why they fail to deliver is beyond me. Why Proflific decided not to include support for the older chipset revisions in their Windows 10 driver is anyone's guess, counterfeit chips might just be one of a 1000 reasons.
Dave, thank you very much for bringing out that "background" info about the counterfeit cables. I was totally unaware of that. My problem is that I have a Baofeng UV5S ( Yes I said "S" ). I have been told that my 5S is essentially a rebranded 5R. That made things a little clearer for me. Unfortunately, my radio has a Motorola style instead of the Kenwood style connector. Do you have a solution that I could apply to "S"? Many thanks. 73
Update : everything works, but I can't save the file on my computer. I get "File access error"... But that is a minor inconvenience... the programming works and that is the important thing.
Hi Dave, great videos I own 5 Boafeng UV82 but one of the radios when I plug it to my computer gives me the “wrong radio model..” the other 4 radios work flawlessly, any advice on this??? Thank you
Hi David, I found the problem among all my UV82 Radios 2 of them don't have firmware, I don't know how or why, but all the rest of the radios have a firmware. Is there a way to update the firmware on these radios? Thank you Dave
Nice work. I just subscribed. I was wondering if a Baofeng UV5R can be programmed with Wouxun software and cable? I think it's the same cable for both. I want to load the same freq's as are on the Wouxun.
I use Linux, will I be able to load my HT with its software useing Linux or God forbid have to borrow a friends Windows Computer? I am getting a Yaesu FT 60 R
why these knuckle heads couldn't just sell the cable with the radios after this problem is beyond me. I've 6 hours trying get it to work with the original cable and no luck. I ordered the "grey" cable with the fancy software, I hope it works like the red one. Geeez!!!
Programming cables have always been a problem. The Japanese radios not only charge for the programming cables but also the programming software. At least the Chinese manufacturers provide the programming software for free. Or you can use CHIRP. The problem with a lot of the programming cables is that they use chips made by Prolific. There have been many counterfeit chips made. So Prolific got with Microsoft to fix the drivers so they would not work with the counterfeit chips. The way they did this was to declare an entire part number series counterfeit whether they were not. This is still an issue. Most Chinese radios come with the programming cable, although not all. I still use my red cable from time to time when the Chinese cable will not work. It's a very frustrating issue, and like you, I've spent many hours on it.
Lots of links in the description, but none is relevant to the cable driver... Actually, this video added to the frustration already experienced. Bla bla bla...
For those of you who found this video by searching how to get your existing cable to work, it is way easier and cheaper to just install the correct driver. Windows 10 is misidentifying the cable and installing the wrong driver. The correct driver is Prolific 3.2.0.0 and can be downloaded here: www.miklor.com/COM/UV_Drivers.php
Yes, I thought you had. And at the beginning of the video I thought that's where you were going, then you surprised me with the "red cable". I didn't even know that existed, so thank you for that. As always, I did enjoy the video. I especially enjoyed your emphasis that this issue was a Windows 10 issue. As an avid Linux user (since 1998), I truly appreciate the fact that anything I want to plug into my computer will work out-of-the-box and I never have to fuss over drivers.
I tried the Prolific 3.2.0.0 driver but it still doesn't work and says the Baofeng cable is an Unrecognized device. It doesn't actually install anything, just creates an empty folder! BTW, what gave you the idea that Linux has drivers for everything? It actually only has drivers for common things like mice, keyboards and thumb drives and it you want to use something different that you would have to install a driver for, you can't. I like it even though it has limited usefulness, it doesn't crash all the time like Win 10 does.
You have talked a lot about the programming cable. Realize that this is simply a USB to rs-232 interface. An FTDI-232 board will do the same thing. As long as you have the correct drivers (automatically downloaded), any rs-232 adapter should work. I was going to use the headphone/microphone plug that came with the Baofeng, to make my own adapter, but it was so inexpensive to buy the proper cable assembly that I would rather keep my headphone. www.ebay.com/bhp/ftdi-usb-cable
I had so many problems with the PL2303 l found a real cheap solution for that. On eBay you can buy a USB to UART CP2102 module for less than 2 dollars. All you need to do is to crack open your old black cable unsolder 3 wires GND,TX,RX throw away the 2303,,, solder the 3 wires on your cp2102 everything is labeled on the board too easy and you Will never have any problems with any computers
I ended up going with rtsystemsinc.com for my TYT TH 9800 (cable, driver and programming) ... more money but was brain dead easy, TH 9800 is a quad band mobile, takes a different cable than the talkies...only mention because they also offer cables/programming for many radios, mobiles and talkies...about $50 complete... Haven't programmed my Baofengs by computer...yet.. Will pick up a red cable and give it a try.. Love chirp Thanks for sharing

I use Linux, will I be able to load my HT with its software useing Linux or God forbid have to borrow a friends Windows Computer? I am getting a Yaesu FT 60 R
Chirp runs on Linux, so give it a try. It's free.
why these knuckle heads couldn't just sell the cable with the radios after this problem is beyond me.
Good luck!
I covered that in an earlier video. Thanks for the link, as that provides more info about how to load the old driver. 73

Thanks for the tip!

Every cheap cable I have tried works Ubuntu Linux.
you use this as a scanner
I ended up going with rtsystemsinc.com for my TYT TH 9800 (cable, driver and programming) ... more money but was brain dead easy, TH 9800 is a quad band mobile, takes a different cable than the talkies...only mention because they also offer cables/programming for many radios, mobiles and talkies...about $50 complete...
Haven't programmed my Baofengs by computer...yet.. Will pick up a red cable and give it a try.. Love chirp
