Love him or not, Lars was serious about creating Metallica before the band ever existed. Dude has a skill for arrangements and is probably one of the most business-savvy guys in rock/metal.
They actually planned on replacing him. And james hetfield also tried to get dimebag darrell on guitar as well.
@@sortaunsure9048 James has to understand now that Lars is the one making Metallica stay successful with his business vision.
@@fatimapalacios2292 yeah. If I remember it was 86' they planned on it but never went through with it.
@@sortaunsure9048 yeah maybe losing Cliff made him fearful of losing the street family he had and decided to stay with Lars. I think that if he would have said to lars he was out Lars would have kicked him. Because I think he owns the name.
polyglot, smart, charismatic, natural-born leader = Lars
Lars has a vision for things unlike anything I’ve seen. He reminds me of the Steve Jobs of music. His approach to Metallica is always outside of the box. Love him for that.
This is why its comical when guys say Lars should be fired because he isn't some virtuoso drummer that wouldn't even sound right in Metallica anyways lol. The things he does outside of just play the drums is mind blowing for anyone who actually understands what is going on and how we got to this point.
If it wasn't for Lars Metallica wouldn't be where they are today, his vision, hard work and just sheer tenacity \m/
You forgot to include his crash.
Yeah, James would of probably written some killer tunes with Mustaine and other rock gems. But when really knows.
Your right, they wouldnt be washed up sellouts. And before you argue, make sure you remember Load and Reload. The only thing keeping their live shows going is the early stuff
@@drumsofviolence as much as I can't stand Larp, he is a great business man.
Who would've thought that Lark would be a Fine Art expert/buyer, a wine lover and become one of the richest drummers ever when we listened to Metallica in the mid 80s?
He is a turd but he earned everything he has.
I think it was their restless touring all over the world and in your face all the time attitude.
Jason seems like such a cool dude.
I remember at a Metallica fan club gig at London’s Ministry of Sound.
I was crowd surfing and screaming his name. He looked straight at me and sort of chuckled and rolled his eyes.
He was a Metallica fan, which made him one of us. One of our own had made it into the band and he was great ambassador and asset to Metallica at that time.
Probably one of the first posters I had on my wall was Jason with his almighty undercut.🤘
My brother got to jam with him one night. He is from the grand rapids Kalamazoo area in Michigan. He went into a Guitar Center in Kalamazoo and bought a bunch of equipment my brother's drummer was working and sold it to him. At the end of the transaction Jason said to my brother's drummer Hey I'm setting this up out of my parents' house if you wanna come over and jam and bring a few guys you're more than welcome. So my brother got to go on jam with them at his parents house for a few hours. He said he was a real cool guy. This was in 05-06 after he quit Metallica
Metallica has always been special in their approach to their work. Not only Lars too. It's some kind of band policy.
This band policy lives
@@pissfringe I think they are right. Some might call them obsessed with control, playing close to the vest and so on, but I believe ity the only way.
I wish they would have taken Jason more seriously when he was in Metallica. Yeah he was a fan at heart but that's not his fault. Metallica were biggest band even before Jason joined
I think the problem was they didn't give themselves enough time to grieve for Cliff, so poor old Jason became the outward focus of their pain.
Jason was treated just fine in the band at a personal level. They loved him, they treated him like a brother, and went through a lot together. They just didn’t take his creativity as seriously at that specific time and that’s what made him leave. James was scared he’d lose Jason if he did Echobrain, and barely realized it was because he was holding him back before it was already too late. For the first 2 albums Jason was pretty happy with the creative input he was being given, but after the Load albums (which were pretty much only written by James and Lars) he just needed something else. People always act like Metallica treated him like shit the whole time, but it was just way more complicated than that. They loved each other, and still do. They definitely took Jason seriously for the most part, but creatively they slowly started to forget about him and Kirk, and Jason was the only one that wanted to expand. Again, it had nothing to do with the fan stuff and the Cliff stuff. Only time I ever heard Jason talk about having an issue with it was during the first 6 months, but again they grew together rather quickly. They really weren’t ever bullies to him like the media tries to make it out to be. Way too many people taken some of these interviews too seriously, or out of context
@@smarkmalark I wouldn't call getting stuck with the entire bill at a restaurant, getting left behind while everyone piles in a cab, having your hotel room trashed, and having your contributions removed from what is arguably Metallica's last great album ok treatment. In fact, it screams "abusive workplace." I think the others knew that Jason was talented and allowed him to shine during live shows, but most people aren't going to walk away from millions of dollars unless the situation has gotten truly unbearable.
@@peterclarke7240 Cliff's death was obviously hugely traumatic, but I think fans underestimate the smugness of James and Lars. It's weird to hear James, particularly, talk about the abusive behavior that Jason was subjected to in the Zane and David Fricke interviews like James wasn't a part of it.
But being a fan is good! Working with someone who is familiar with your catalog is an asset.
Miss u Jason. Just watched Live at Moscow Air Field. You were on point that day indeed!
Jasons hair was Metallica's fifth member back then😂
@@mztweety1374 Agree. Also the mass of people in that moment of time was so amazing!!
I hope and pray that Lars decides one day to write a Autobiography and puts a lot of this stuff in the book !
It's amazing that not one guy in Metallica has yet written a Autobiography ?
They've written a bunch. They just call them albums, not autobiographies.
He’s planning a Metallica museum.
@@diverdownseattle would be hugely successful.
They're still writing their story. No time for talking about the past.
James said in a interview for 72 seasons that he won't write one because his story is still ongoing !
i've been known to snatch the set list off the stage after a show. got stacks from bands i can't even remember. Cheers.
Jason's tha MAN mann!!🤘🎸🤘🎸🤘🍻🍻
That was fun to listen to
That would be cool to see all the stuff in that vault...maybe some day it will end up on youtube
Lars was always the business mind.
Amazing
I liked this guy in Metallica far more than rob.
Nah, Rob's the perfect fit. This guy always felt a spare part, plus Robs a way more ferocious and more talented bass player.
@@thedigitalemotion yeah but the thing is that Rob's full talent is never displayed in Metallica I still will always love Jason and Rob
@@thedigitalemotion Rob's a fucking bozo.
Yep
@@thedigitalemotion it’s actually the other way round. At least to most of us. Back then, Jason was a second frontman he and Hetfield synched perfectly. Same style but still different, they were a unit on stage.
Rob might be the more talented musician, but he brings skater suicidal tendencies - westcoast Punk vibes to a band that never had those vibes before. And as it was said before, Rob’s too talented for Metallica, in all seriousness. He’d do better in a band that allows a bassist to be more active.
I want/need to see the stuff.
Lars' drumming has been questionable since the early 90's at least... that bein said. His vision, ear for a riff and song structure is pretty much unparalleled in heavy music. The man's definitely earned his "Legend" status.
His drumming was questionable on the justice album? His drumming on the black album is some of the tightest of all time. Recently, sure, I buy it - but early 90s? You’re high
@@Faboofighter AJFA was '88 Recorded through '87 I think. Spending months recording and copy/pasting drums is easy but his live performances have been questionable for decades. Don't agree? Good for you.
@Beef Cheeks he was a beast live in the 80s and 90s. He would speed up or slow down tempo during songs but overall he was pretty solid Metallica was a force in those days live.
@@midnight347 I agree for the most part but the early 90's was when it began to be very noticeable. I love Lars, he's the reason I wanted to play drums in the first place.
Love Lars.. Jason... 🖤🤘🤘
HE LEFT THE FUCKING BAND!!!
Metallica museum? Would love to see all the things they've collected through the years in person. It would be epic.
Lars should be on an episode of Hoarders.
That would be the coolest episode ever lol.
WHERE IS THIS INTERVIEW FROM?
@@winterlucy Thank you! This channel never gives credit to the original videos
Newstead is now Lou Reed
This would be news if Jason was there from the start. By the time he joined, it was already clear Metallica memorabilia would have value.
I think he had MONEY in his mind all the time, who the fuck would think of gathering memorabilia early in their Career, so it would be priceless in the future. He probably knew at that stage they were going to Stardom which they were. I heard on the justice album they could have retired on that album alone.... In all fairness though they treated Jason like shit, that's why he left... You can't do anything outside the band man.. The fans loved him and he loved the fans.. What a bass player he was, take the intro wherever I may roam I think.. Yeah well Lars was always has always talked through his hole anyway, fock this and fock man,and to turn down the bass on my favourite album was criminal, it should be remastered... In 50 years people will still be talking about it 😁
That's pretty damn chincy to just keep the extra copies meant for the dudes man...
Does Lars offer public tours of this Metallica vault?
That poor dude..I loved Metallica before jason was ever a thought but when he was up I instantly loved Jason just as much&some respects more they can act like rob is the right guy for the job&maybe their change in their style of music propelled them to the fame&fortune they like all bands only hope to accomplish but they will never be the Metallica they should've stayed when jason replaced cliff&the same respects of cliff replacing Ron ect..after they did the s&m album&jason left when they released their st.anger with Rob I was dissappointed&imo I was like oh noo..it's all over now..wat a shame..
Miss Jason in Metallica so much… Doesn’t matter to me how good Rob is, he just doesn’t mesh with them.
🤦♂️
Yes he does. Jason level-no but absolutely meshes
Yep
I don't mean to sound disrespectful to Rob, he's clearly a fantastic musician, but even after 20 years I still see him as the new guy, or the stand in guy.
I totally get why someone would feel that he doesn't mesh with Metallica.
Having said that though, other than seeing them at Slane Castle four years ago, I haven't listened to anything new from Metallica since Death Magnetic was released on Guitar Hero back in 2009 so I'm probably talking out of my arse here.
@@szithaanu9934 We’re on the same page brother. I mean Rob is a fantastic bassist, just not the right fit for Metallica in my eyes. Suicidal Tendencies was much more suited to his style, and personality…and to me, that’s the type of band he really thrives in. Alternatively, he’d be a killer fit for the Chilli Peppers, if Flea wasn’t their main man.
Lars is quite fascinating, he isn’t that great a drummer but he’s always been at the core of writing and arranging Metallica songs…which is really unusual for a drummer in any band. He’s kinda an annoying weedy looking guy too, not some tall alpha like Heitfield, you wouldn’t think somebody like that would be so dominant
He is the greatest drummer working today.
In studio you see Lars is an Alpha.
In some arranging, he knows what he wants and what works and even though he s not screaming and stuff but the sound guys and Kirk , they re a bit intimidated.
lars s great drummer.
At least he was.
I mean you lead a new drum style you arrange songs that became legendary with some varied approach, you think you do that without beign good ? Doing this is a sign of a great drummer and musician.
@@redrick8900 He's good, but he's no Portnoy or Peart.
@@jasonkloos6348 true. But he never needed to be
Damn, all these years thinking Lars is good for nothing….actually a great collector!
He can bring a mean lawsuit too. So that's two things😂
Jason is full of regret
Not at all dude, he sounds so much happier to have left that machine
@@crushingalldeceivers yeah more than regret is that his memories seems bittersweet.
Once again Jason not speaking up! Claim what is yours bro!
Jeeeeezz hahahahaha at the 1.28 point, who ever put this together made poor ol Jason look 200 years old
Don't forget, he's 60 years old now, so he's not exactly a young guy anymore.
@@A_Final_Hit I think he has aged as well as the rest. It's just we see him less often so it seems more pronounced. To be fair, that photo of him is just a particularly bad one also.
His eyes sadly shrank with age. A friend of mine said he saw him in person and when he took his glasses off they were the size of shirt buttons. Sad but true.
@@thedigitalemotion That is barely an anecdote.
@@paulmallon9292 Wasn't an anecdote, mate, just an observation. Did you go to School?
Jason will forever be my favorite member of this band. End of story. Lars will forever be be my *least* favorite.
Boo hoo for Jason.
