@cheapwatchman_official if you’re interested in the original of this watch (the helm vanuatu) have one new in box I could give you a good deal on, there is normally a year plus wait list for them.
I've been wearing that same watch for a good year now. White dial 8315 movement. I paid quite a bit less because I only buy those watches directly from San Matin during a sale. So it's a way to save 50-60 bucks. I wear it in a bottling plant and it gets slammed all day. It's very accurate and will run for a least 60 hours. It might be the most legible watch you can buy because the ar coating is good and the lume lasts a good 6 hours. So 3 in the afternoon in direct sunlight - 3am with no light - doesn't matter. San Martin said they use a different method to brush the steel. I think they were going for a very rough - very tool watch look. Mine must be scratched all over but it kind of looks the same. I wear it in the pool, the gulf of Mexico - a true beater/tool. Fantastic bracelet, great value. I have that movement in another watch. Same thing, Accurate and runs for days.
Why did they go with vertical brushing on the sides? Horizontal brushing accentuates the flow of the case much better. With those gauges on it I wonder if scotch brite will be enough to alter it. Some more aggressive means might be needed.... Thanks for the review!
Great review Randy. I own the same watch in black and totally understand your "rough finishing" reference. I think the same but consider the watch a true durable tool watch with a blue collar finish. The lume is also great on the black dial version- I love the watch.
I love mine its a Helm Vanuatu homarge I grabbed it because I have the helm but the helm don't come with the fully lume display it keeps great time ps always buy watches in the sale lol
I picked up a San Martin SN0074 for about $250 when it was on sale. One thing I like is that it's a clone of the BR05 but without the asymmetric date. Finishing is good but one of the screws on the bezel is ever so slightly off. I guess that's what we have to expect with SM.
It's funny how some people get enamored of a brand despite overcharging and crazy quality variance. A fine review, I definitely appreciate the style and structure of your reviews.

@@cheapwatchman_official 💯 After watching, I gave the Scotchbrite treatment to my Mako II that I wear on a NATO (modded with coin edge bezel and vintage Bakelite insert, sapphire dome). Looks SO much better, much more fitting than that gaudy high polish. Nice and laid back for the weekends 😎 Plus, now it's REALLY mine, a one-of-one. Despite being my 1st and a very low cost mechanical, I find myself wearing it frequently still. I just got my first Sinn (maybe not last?), a 104 I St Sa A (grey dial, H-link brac) and yeah... The high polish even on that - and the finish is of a high quality - but it still seems kinda off for a tool/pilot watch. Like, it works, but... I may have to seek out one of the bead blasted 104 FB limited editions. I can't bring myself to scuff up a brand new shiny bauble. Maybe though, a decade from now when it is showing signs of wear, I might find a pro who could brush the case? 🤷🏼
Ridiculous price for a watch with that movement (Miyota 8215) from 1977. For about $3 more their cost they could have put a Seiko NH38 in it. This is a sub $100 watch trading on their name. I like the dial and hands and only annoyed that I cannot replicate those and build my own version..
It's actually the 8315. I have two of them. They are both better than any of my Seiko NH's. More accurate and a 50% longer power reserve. I leave them in watch boxes for days. Take them out and not only are they still running, I don't have to adjust the time. Fantastic.
