Nicely balanced review Mike, thank you. Goes the extra mile in terms of looking inside at the dial and movement in a way that I haven't seen before. Also for those of us who have cracked open and serviced a couple of dozen NH35s, making it right.
Nice review! I bought the Titanium version of this watch a few days ago, looking forward to receiving it. The Rolex Submariner in Titanium has always been my dream watch. This is probably as close as I will ever come. It looks like a very nice watch.
Interesting to see the dirt on the rotor. I have one SM with an NH35. It died on the first day I had it. However, I cannot fault SM's customer service. They organised and paid for it's return to China, and a new movement was put in and the watch returned. I had a custom dial design, so I am assuming they didn't just sent me and entirely new watch. It has worked with no issues for the last two years.
It is good to hear a positive story of their customer service as usually you only ever read negative mainly because the positive outcomes are not shouted out. An issue in the movement is probably not their fault, it does not take much to stop a watch and the NH35 will not have been assembled by a human. Pleased your watch is now all good and your happy.
@@mywatchreviewsI just received my SN0111-g-a. First impressions are positive. I can see and feel the improvements in overall finish compared to my now 2 year old San Martin. Far fewer sharp edges. So far I have only two minor gripes: I think a flat sapphire would have suited it better than the slightly domed crystal it has. I have a genuine Rolex Explorer 214270, and I suppose I am used to the flat crystal it has. The female end links are pointless. They are not capable of folding down beyond the angle of the fixed outer end links or lugs. This means they extend the effective lug-to-lug length just as much as fixed male end links would. So, you get the less visually appealing (IMHO) female end links with none of the benefits that people with smaller wrists are looking for. In this aspect, I prefer the male end links on my old San Martin’s bracelet.
I love the detail you are going into. All these details matter to me. I love the fact you've taken the watch apart to inspect how they have done it. The condition of the rotor was naughty! I have subscribed.
One of the highest quality reviews on UA-cam. The in depth look into the watch is just absolutely amazing. What is the best quality Sub homage around this price point in your opinion?
Wow, thanks! If I’m honest this is the first Sub I have reviewed as I’ve not been reviewing for long. My main channel is watchmaking . I have to say though that this one is very well made for the money and it’s grown on me to the point I now wear it.
The mix of polished and burnished finishes is very well done, I especially like the highly polished chamfers and bezel scallops. I enjoy the great closeups of the uncased watch, but I don't envy your effort in having to clean up before reassembling,
I almost think this dial had static as the dust poured in! as a hobbyist watchmaker I have no problem taking them out the case and maybe in this channel or my other one I will soon start to take some of these Chinese movements apart.
@@mywatchreviewsI would watch the heck out of that. Like, over & over. I’m fascinated by these Chinese watches, but I am unsure if they’ll last. If you tear them apart and talk about that aspect, I would be glued to the screen.
I really enjoyed the review. I actually like the homage or borrowed design. I also like the blank back. The (R) brand does make some of the best designs of all time so I’m actually happy with all the borrowed designs that they make. Thanks again for the review. 👍
A nice review thank you Mike. The 'Spring Bar' issue is a backwards step, to use a disassembled version of a product that has successfully been developed into a robust assembly! Good to see Yoda was keeping a close eye on everything. 👍🇬🇧 and Yoda 👌
Great review, I think SM did a good job with that exposed spring bar..look at the thickness of the shoulder junction / end pin , I suspect it is used in favour of a usual spring bar for added security & strength and to prevent the deaded `clicking` spring bars make especially in a vulnerable area like that piont in the strap.
I've noticed Yoda making more frequent appearances both here and the myretrowatches channel 😁. For the price, it's a really solid choice. The phantom position on the NH35 would make me twitch, but I dislike cyclops so it might balance out. For someone looking for a decent water resistant tool watch, this Sab Martiner looks like decent pick.
Yoda is something quite personal and he will be in many videos. During my cancer diagnosis, treatment and now afterwards I joined a FB group on prostate cancer where I made some new friends. Amongst some of these fellow warriors was a guy called John. He was a few months ahead of me on treatment and he offered me a lot of support. We had got to know each other and I found out he was a Star Wars nut and also very good at making and painting models . I mentioned in one conversation that as a lad I had the original Yoda back in the 80s but a mate of mine nicked it off me. Low and behold a few weeks ago this turns up from John. It was a lovely gesture, from what we both went through and our support for one another. It 50 it almost feels a bit silly to have Yoda but I said he would make it in the videos here and there. Still means the world to me just as a symbol of all that bad stuff and that we are both still here
Thanks for the nice review always interesting to see these SM. Is it possible in your next reviews to show how the movement is secured in the case and also to show what type of pendant tube SM are using whether it is push in glued or a nice screw in one like the Daytona trip lock tubes that one can pick up from Ali express. Thanks
Hi Tony, any NH35/ 34 / 38 movements are always a friction fit, I have never once seen and clamps to hold them in place. For PT5000 movements I have seen movement clamps. For pendant tubes I have never given them a second thought. I would be surprised if San Martin would be using ones that are clued (never personally seen this on my watch repair channel) almost all San Martin are screw down crown so you would expect these to be a good press fit.
I have the San Martin SN0111-G-B and noticed there is a 10 seconds variance between dial up and 3 o'clock up. The variance was even greater before adjusting the beat error and effective length. I hope this is not typical for an NH35A from SM.
I think your expecting way to much from a humble NH35. Firstly San Martin will have nothing to do with it. I really doubt they regulate as it’s all to a budget and the people who would be doing it would not be adjusting for positional error. When I repair customer watches I can be 30minutes on regulation and then a few days later to be sure. Seiko just knock these movements out for peanuts. If I can buy a movement for $30 or less then what are they at manufacture? It’s all robotically produced and would never be checked by human hand and that is why Seikos tolerances on the data sheet for the NH35 are so huge . It’s something like +/- 40 seconds and nothing on positional error. You want chronometer standards be prepared to pay considerably more to ensure positional error is less than 10 in all angles.
I went with the SteelDive SD1953, at only ~US$100 (AliExpress; on sale at the time), with the same NH35. I did upgrade the bracelet to an unbranded oyster with micro-adjust for an additional $20. Basically, half the price of the SanMartin. The key difference...no pip with the SD1953. In terms of fit/finish and materials...very competitive.
As an owner of Rolex, I feel justified owning the SN017 - I can’t by a Sub from Rolex so Inwill buy a Sub somewhere else and this one (17 in my case) is quite good. These are not my GMT Master II but excellent and I love it.
The Sub homage is so overdone. Prefer under the radar homage myself. Pretty sure I had that clasp bar issue. Just replaced it and thought no more. If it has a purpose, I would like to know. I am still a fan of the brand and love the quality feel of these watches.
I agree it’s done to death and I make mention of that. However this design sells in numbers and for San Martin it’s a numbers game and people want these designs. As much as it’s a nice watch it’s not really for me. The clasp is fine I like the glide lock system but curious why a spring bar is not used. I can only think these pins are perhaps harder wearing? Most people would never be undoing it like me anyway. Thanks for your comment and for watching.
I love the watch but i love the "classic" look of a dive watch. I would prefer a date wheel. As for the case back. I like it as it leaves space for engraving and exhibition backs have become tiresome to me. Bulletproof Nh35 movements are everywhere nowadays. I appreciate these reviews as they have introduced me to brands i had no knowledge of. Thank you
I love a display caseback but even as the massive Seiko fan I am I do bore of looking at a Seiko NH movement through the glass! some of the Miyota movements look nicer and on one of mine I thermally blued the screws to add more interest.

The difference in quality is there of course, but is it a $9,700 difference? I see their prices coming down on many models. To me the $200 is where they should be that. I would not say they are overrated though but I respect completely your opinion and others.
Yes I'd expect a good looking watch with a very well finished case, a sapphire crystal, ceramic bezal, quality japanese movement, quality bracelet with glide lock to cost a lot less than 200 quid. 🙄
@@markwade1376Exactly... Some people complain about everything.
*too overrated
It's all looks, behind the looks it's total rubbish.
