Lead singer Sebastian Bach said the song was written about the spiraling effect of drug use on his friend Steven Adler, the original drummer of hard rock band Guns N' Roses.

I'm now 57yrs old. Enough time has gone by that it seems like God stops "giving" us gifts, and starts taking em away. We sure have lost far too many legendary artists in the last couple of decades.

Also, Sebastian Bach is one of the most underrated vocalists of all time.

Slave to the Grind / Monkey Buisness ... People that were expecting a full album of pop rock got a dose of something in that album. Most bands (cough Metallica) (cough Def Leopard) (etc) that got softer over time, Skid Row went the other direction with that album at least. --- that said, I never kept up with them and have no idea what direction the albums after Slave to the Grind went.

    • @stanleymyrick4068

Ahh, now I know why I didn't follow Skid Row after Slave to the Grind. The label issues hid Subhuman Race album from the spotlight and then Sebastion left. The end of Skid Row as it was known. I heard Subhuman Race, while not living up to the first two albums, is still very solid. I will have to check it out.

Slave to the Grind concert in a smaller arena where I was about 11 rows back was the best concert I ever went too. Beating out KISS and their outstanding show, Alice Cooper, ACDC etc etc... I was at the epicenter of sound. It was so LOUD and so PERFECT. Went back to my brother's apartment and said "hey man, you seem to have crickets in your apartment". He turned around and said, "those aren't crickets! That's your ears ringing!"

This same album featured three shattering emotionally desperate power ballads, this, Quicksand Jesus, and In A Darkened Room. All three are excellent and Sebastian delivers them each with an insane level of both emotion and technical ability. At this point is his career he was pretty much as good as it gets.

I remember reading an interview with Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue some time in the mid-late 80’s. They asked him about the popularity of glam metal. He said they it had become so popular all the record companies were scrambling to sign the next big thing. As a result a lot of “chump bands” are being signed. It would take a while for the bad ones to get weeded out. On the first point he was absolutely right. Most of the bands who debuted after 1985 were not as good as those from 1980-1985. Poison & Skid Row were definitely the best of those to emerge after 1985, GNR excluded because they were never a glam band. Sixx was wrong about the chump bands getting weeded out. As the 90’s came in grunge emerged and the glam baby was thrown out with the bath water.

Of all the bands of the 80's, Skid Row has to be one of the most underrated of the overrated bands. Skid Row paved the way for bands like Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, and Uriah Heep. A lot of people don't know this, but they formed in 1956 as a barbershop quartet, which is how their singer Johann Sebastian Bach, learned to sing and write symphonies, and play the harpsichord.

Who doesn't waste time? Just don't waste too much time, no matter the age. Bach may not be today what he was then, he's not supposed to be. The problem with the hair bands was their arrogance. He thought he was the gift, not the music. Once that happens, music moves to a different place like today.

Here is video of him singing this song live in 92 in Sweden. He can sing it live just as well. He is the best rock singer of all time. Period.

It's about to losing a close friend to heroin: "horse." It translates to any real addiction though.

Yeah it is definitely about addiction. From what I understand people that can sing like he does stay away from drinking, drugs and smoking as much as possible as life choice. This song is about one of his best friends who basically wasted his life on heroin, Steven Adler (last name?) the original drummer of Guns n Roses. My brother idolized Sebastian Bach and he is one of the biggest reasons why he took hard rock vocal lessons and dare I say... he could probably give younger Sebastian a run for his money. He can hit some of those notes with as much sustain and my point is to maintain such an instrument he doesn't smoke nor has he used any drugs, he does drink in social occasions though. Thankfully, he is also not a mega-diva like Sebastian.

So you've heard a bit from the first 2 albums. Now you have to hear the covers EP "B-Side Ourselves" and 3rd and final album with Sebastian Bach - "Subhuman Race". That 3rd one is the best in my opinion and they completely shedded any traces of glam metal by then. It often gets ignored by glam metal fans for that reason, but also ignored by more modern rock fans because of their past. It was still a platinum selling record though.

Subhuman Race is underrated, but it didn’t go anywhere near platinum. It only sold about 200,000 copies and was off the charts in nine weeks, sad to say.
