      Honestly it’s something I’ve wanted to do for a while as it makes my content a bit vocally flat when I can just expletive ad infinitum. That’s just kind of how I talk when I have to run my mouth quickfire and I’d be interested to replace it with something.

    • @tonton_1964
      @tonton_1964 3 роки тому

      I know that beeping words out doesn't work for youtube. Apparently, it alerts the robots to bad content, but maybe you could just replace swearwords with names of flowers for example, promising a lexicon in a later video, and that could be very effective at translating anger or frustration while being funny in itself, and might convey a graphic content while staying well and proper ?

    Good for you! I'm here more for the long form old timey voice acted uncut content, not a big fan of the quick new stuff. But even with that being so, I think you're one of the few content creators I'd actually want to support to grow and build this into a career because you're just freaking good at this stuff. You're likable, talented, great sense of humour, nice voice, and a good eye for quality. You might just make it! Looking forward to see where this leads. Please take care of yourself to prevent creator burnout. Slow and steady wins the race.

    • @EditEdward

      Slower voice acted is fine until one is sifting 60+ takes PER LINE sadly. Don’t get me wrong I love doing it but that’s more something where having an editor or “it’s my job to do this” has a legitimate impact through both time and commitment.
      Regrettably while editors are easy to come by, even they can’t help sift the lines since I’m effectively director as well lol. It has to be THE RIGHT take, not the clearest or best, it needs to feel right To Me.

    One thing I think I've seen is that numbered series don't seem to get promoted as well as you go through a series. Perhaps consider not numbering them, or going the Spiffing Brit and have standalone content that also exists as part of a longer series

    • @tonton_1964
      @tonton_1964 3 роки тому +1

      But you can add a season number to reinject viewers partway into a story... it's true a series gets less viewers after 40-50 episodes, so you can change something, and open a new chapter called season n+1 episode 1. You get new viewers who sometimes go through all the older videos after seeing it that would not have hopped into a 50th episode.

    As far as the swearing is concerned, Nostalgia Critic did go through a full year with out swearing and people still found his content entertaining.
    It's not an algorithmic thing like I know you more likely want to know, but from that he made a point that you don't have to be shocking in order to be enjoyable.
    Essentially what I am trying to say, as long as you are actually smart about it, with some common sense, judgement, and you 100% like what you have made, you don't even need to swear in order to be enjoyable or entertaining.
    And as far as I can tell, you already have that. From the calmer plays of the older videos to the higher edits of today, you know exactly what you want and what you are doing as far as entertainment is concerned. So if you are concerned about not being as funny for not swearing, I think, you fucking got this. ;)

    One channel to look at is Many A True Nerd who has a variety of video game content, ranging from one offs where he looks at a game for a bit and moves on, and he has his bread and butter series that he comes back to after enough time has passed for either dlc, more content or to just give the series breathing room, like crusader kings, stellaris and fallout or any other grand strategy series, but he also has video essays, speciffically on fallout, fallout 3 is better than you think, how do we fix 76 and fo4 is better than you think and covering various mechanics of the fallout franchise. He also does live streams and he either goes to a regual relaxing game he has like FTL, continues a one off for fun or uses the community channel to vote on a game to live stream.

    Perhaps you can track the way your high edit compares to low edit videos. Also, I’ve noticed most UA-camrs start mentioning the amount of nonsubbed viewers. I don’t know how much you can influence the growth of sub count with this, but it’s worth a try.

    Seeing as the last video I made was when I was 12 I know very little about the algorithm. I will say swearing is unfortunately likely the way forward for most youtubers. Also definitely try to keep similar content, ive seen channels crash and burn from trying to do too much on one channel. By that I mean doing things like movie reviews and video games regularly, so yeah. Besides that I unfortunately don't have much else to say. But I will be trying to make sure to hit the like on your videos more often. Also I know someone else mentioned it earlier but having a series follow one character where you can make something of a story for them would be great. Keep It up my friend!

    He's not mega huge but the thing that pulls me towards Gopher's videos and yours as well: Story.
    Seriously
    Gopher plays a lot of RPGs, openworld games that allow him to not only play the story of the game, but of his character. The man's played through Skyrim 3 separate times and each one was it's own thing. From Stiv the WarlOrc to Richard the Tomb Diving Librarian and recently Lenny 'The Man Who Stole Your Sweetroll' Septim. The man's ability to get in character can rival Critical Roll at times.
    I mention him because you like to make your own story and it's something that could synergise with your lower effort stuff.

    Gonna suggest researching how Mark Rober consistently gets on trending.
    Might not seem all that useful, but there's a few bits- ex: low-edit videos having a snippet of the second or third-best clip in the video, "consider subscribing" instead of "like, comment, subscribe" for however you'll do that mid-video reminder, stuff like that. For a high-edit version of that snippet suggestion: Comedic foreshadowing.
    Also gonna suggest looking at how Rimmy does things, since both you and him do gaming videos with stories.
    He gives the moment-to-moment shenanigans from multiple perspectives, while also having a consistent focus on the story and having excellent hype and psych-up moments.
    Also gonna point this out:
    The algorithm treats likes and dislikes the exact same way- the only difference is how it looks
    Any face/"face" that doesn't look like an unaltered human face is more likely to get recommended
    Thumbnail backgrounds matter, the algorithm likes the foreground and background colors being distinct from each other- hence why bright outlines seem successful.

    • @EditEdward
      @EditEdward  3 роки тому

      Names noted and techniques too, thanks! Re: snippeting I once tried that for a time but I never knew how to transition from that to the main video without the usual slowpoke “hello everyone I am X” intro afterwards bringing the pace / tone right down again.

    For your Twitch stuff I would recommend watching the interview "itmeJP" had with "CohhCarnage", because a pretty significant part of it is all about Twitch, and how Cohh "handled" Twitch to get where he is today. Funny enough, one part of it was him stopping to swear. XD
    The interview is two videos (links at the bottom), and is in total almost 3 hours long (1st ~70min, 2nd ~100min). Unfortunately I don't know exactly where in the videos they talk about the relevant twitch bits (it was many months ago that I saw them)... but from what I can recall/gather the first video is more about Cohh's life with growing up, gaming, music, working befor he became a streamer, etc... and then the second video looks to have more of the actual twitch stuff in it.
    Personally I would say watch it all, but that's because I was interested in knowing all Cohh had to say in general, because I do like him and the person he is, and the community he has built on twitch (one of the nicest communities there is on twitch I think), and since I do watch his live twitch streams when I am able to catch them (as long as he is playing something I am interested in at least), or his backlog on youtube for things that interest me (he does not save his twitch vod's anymore, because of that whole twitch dmca thing last year, so now he uploads all of it on youtube befor he then deletes the vod on twitch).
    Anyway... at the very least what Cohh has to say about twitch, and about his path to "make it" on twitch, etc, is I feel very good information, and can probably be at least helpful in some ways to you... since his rise is not just a coincidence or luck (even if some luck always plays a role in most peoples success), because he also made the right deliberate and calculated choices, and "made his own fortune" as they say.

    Hey mate, a long-ass comment which is going in a bit different direction: you've talked a lot about the mechanical side of getting popularity, but I'd say it's also important to think about the social side of it, if you will (not saying that you did not, just that I haven't heard that in the video). Things like, why people like your videos? What kind of content your viewers/subscribers are looking for? Are there different groups liking different things among them?
    Personally, I think that your high-edited content is your strongest suit by far, since your 1) voice acting and 2) storytelling is what makes your content, well, uniquely "yours". I think that your three-pronged strategy might well work, but I'd just like to point out that it is possible that it means that your audience is three groups with different desires and preferences, so might be important to keep that in mind, for example when choosing which games to play next. These groups can also be different in terms of making money: I'd guess that high-ed content could bring in more patrons and less subscribers (and viewers), etc.
    And also one suggestion about mechanical side: maybe try keeping high-ed (low-ed are probably gonna be rather short anyway?) videos shorter (like you did at the beginning of XCOM series)? Two 30-minutes videos could be better than one 60-minutes (less intimidating for folks to commit to watch and would allow you to post more regularly), especially since you've made great cliffhangers in the past (Avenger defence!).
    And if you really gonna go like-fishing in the middle of videos, you could easily do that like a commercial break (would work especially well for XCOM I guess since you could play with either Resistance Radio or Advent TV or whatever to make it interesting).
    In any case, have some faith in yourself and do not let the pressure of earning a living out of content creation get in the way of your creativity!

    For Twitch, it seems that the Twitch algorithm will randomly pick a low viewer count/low follower count channel from the list of games genres you're interested in and just recommended them to you under "Recommended smaller channels". Your twitch channel kinda falls into that category. So all you really have to do is pick a game people are interested in. Try Darkest Dungeon again. Its getting a resurgence in popularity recently and its only going to increase as DD2 approaches. Another option is Pokèmon... but not the mainstream titles. The fanmade games are absolutely brilliant. Look up "Pokèmon Reborn" and "Pokèmon Rejuvenation". *Proper* Pokèmon games but with more mature and inclusive storytelling.
    And UA-cam is just Random.

    Something I've seen in a few of the youtubers I watch regularly are video titles such as "[insert video game] but [insert related but still clickbaity phrase]." For example, something could be titled "Minecraft but its with proximity chat" or go even further to "Sims 4 but I murder the entire town for fun". Now to be fair this doesn't seem like it would work well with your style of videos, but hey you said provide some things that we've seen and I've seen videos with those kinds of titles do really well so 🤷‍♂️ maybe you can get something from it. Either way titling is really important I think, I personally enjoy titles are are a bit more interesting than "part 1005: defeating the final boss" kind of things yknow

  • @shrikebutcherbird
    @shrikebutcherbird 3 роки тому +1

    Not sure if this will make a difference, but when it comes to titling Videos, try to make sure the actual subject of the video itself isn't more than Seven (7) words long, the title can be longer of course but try to keep it below that number, if I remember correctly it's something Newpapers will sometimes do to help retain attention

      @@EditEdward Another thing with Newspapers, I don't know if all of them do this nowadays, but I know some older ones definitely did it, but the Content on the actual Cover is usually some ways inside the Copy, so perhaps having some build-up, then getting into the subject/meat of the video, and putting the Like request somewhere either in there or after that could work better as well
      Obviously don't spend TOO long floundering, I know Tangents are part of your thing, but if they go on for too long many people will just outright skip to wherever they think the 'Content' is

    i think it's a good idea to do a little "like ad" midway or 3/4 into the video as you say yourself. one thing other youtubers also say helps is comments. but I have no proof if this gives anything, and I would probably get as much out of trying to understand youtube's algorithm as I would for out of hitting a rock with a stick. and on that note, can we agree on what to write if one is not creative enough to write something? otherwise I will probably just start writing my stick and stone report.

    Right I wouldn’t called this exploiting the algorithm considering that I hadn’t blown up. But I have found that putting multiple tags in a video that relates to the video in even in the slightest then videos tend to get more consistent views also sharing it around on social networks can help to get external traffic to your videos also keeping your titles short and to the point can keep people interested in watching the video rather than losing interest and clicking off.

    Yo. In case this helps, I'm sitting on a rather significant collection of Steam keys I got through Humble. They just kinda sit there, doing nothing. I don't need most of them.
    If you want me to, I can compile a list of those that I can give away. No strings attached. Like, none. Even if you were take me up on the offer and later decided that the games aren't actually a good fit, there'd be no obligations whatsoever to play the games, let alone put them on the channel.

    But boobs and grey sweatpants are proven to work... :( No, OEM. Humble Xager has a suggestion that might work. I know you'll hate me for it, but... your meme work, stuff like the 'You're Welcome' video, and 'Hades in a Minute' seem to be very successful. Perhaps you could do some more stuff like that, as a possible idea? The kinda short, punchy humour that is good for a giggle, and people will be inclined to share on social media for a laugh?

      Oh trust me. If I could meme I would. But I don’t know how to.
      You’re Welcome wasn’t my doing that was Reddit, Earrape mixes and somehow Rick and Morty made the song a hit.
      Hades In A Minute does not classify as hit sadly. The effort to create exceeded the gain back.
      Anything I think of as a running gag or “channel meme” just never takes off. I legit think I’m the anti-meme man my brain just isn’t programmed like that somehow
      I’d like shorter “channel trailer” style pieces but even then I just ramble on so strange and so long that I have no clue how to trim to social media length. /shrug maybe I’ll find a guy to do it someday who loved the shit outta Vine and understands that stuff.
