    Outlaw Tribes, Slaughter Tribes, #Gravewalker Difficulty etc. Welcome, Ranger, to the present day. For one night only.
    (Real talk a mo, pinned comment will also reflect this)
    This all began as taking the mickey on the people who berated my old longform, low-edit OEM videos as being "stealing" from the bigman despite us being...well...pretty different in vibe.
    I'm a secure enough chap to admit the homage-satire was partly good natured inspo, & partly bitter "give you something to really moan about" energy.
    But in the years that followed, I learned a lot from this journey. SoW:DR taught me to love editing again after uni beat it out of me; it begat X:MBR, which became channel-defining; it forced me out of using the (speedily turning IRL toxic) OEM persona, since he couldn't vocally carry the "ripoff" gag. I want to say thank you; to all the people who left angry, strange, nonsensical comments & messages (back when YT had those) that spurred this into inception. I literally couldn't have done it without you. And to all the people who saw a harmless fan's gaff for what it was & expressed support. You're the reason it continued & is, now, concluding.
    Irony is, over the years the "thiefcallers" stopped. I think I get one/two a year now where pre-SoW it was a decent rate per month.
    This last episode has been (quite visibly by time & content) difficult to make. Behind the curtain there were a lot of questions.
    -How do you close out a sting piece aimed at people who moved on & no animosity remains either side, even evolving to outright gratitude?
    -How do you end a meta-narrative about two different rangers?
    -Largest of all. How do you deal with how hard SoW's ending S U C K S?!
    Both in gameplay & narrative, I truly believe SoW disservices itself at the last - and not knowing that, when I came to record it I found all my ideas for finales (such as a fully-written Rap Battle that I would lose against ToG 'final boss') crumbling away. I don't know what they were thinking here.
    But enough of that. The sour finale is over - go celebrate our Mordor lord of old. Say it with me, for old times' sake. "The T to the O to the goddamn G!" - Link in the endcard and description. For on this day, The #DiscountRanger rides from Mordor forevermore! Peace y'all!
    I hope on some level y'all enjoyed this satire story of shameless knock-off that revelled in the ripping & spun out so hard it create its own lore (looking at you, Killabrimbor & co)!
    I never intended to "steal" the WHOLE style (e.g. bad joke cutaways, screams etc.) - the older more sedate (but still dramatic) SoM-era style was the aim. Now at the end of the experiment I'd say we half got there. The pace was there, but the commentary quality & creativity was lacking on my part. Blame the ep-by-ep growing amount of "me" as time went by since, well, we're different dudes.

    Real talk a mo (WARNING: Long Comment, as addressing the delays & general whole series)
    .
    .
    .
    .
    This all began as taking the mickey on the people who strangely berated my old longform, low-edit OEM videos as being "stealing" from the bigman despite us being...well...pretty different in vibe. A problem I later found out wasn't exclusive to me, fun fact. This hit a few UKers at the time.
    I'm a secure enough chap in myself to admit that 2017 Ed's idea for the homage-satire was partly good natured inspo, & partly bitter "give you something to really moan about" energy. Mostly the former, but using the latter as engine fuel to actually get up & do it.
    But in the years that followed, I learned a lot from this journey. SoW:DR taught me to enjoy editing again after uni beat it out of me; it begat X:MBR which became channel-defining; it forced me out of using the (speedily turning IRL toxic) OEM persona, since he couldn't vocally carry the "ripoff" gag. Thus, I want to say thank you; to all the people who left angry/strange/nonsensical comments & messages (back when YT had those) that spurred this into inception. I literally couldn't have done it without you.
    And to all the people who saw a harmless fan's gaff for what it was & expressed support (including one long-term friend I made via this shindig). You're the reason it continued beyond a one-off and is, now, concluding. Thank you all so much.
    Irony is, over the years the "thiefcallers" stopped. I think I get one/two a year now where pre-SoW it was a decent rate per month.
    This last episode has been (quite visibly by both delay & the content itself) difficult to make. Behind the curtain, there were a lot of 'approach' questions that stalled the process of getting this done. Beyond the usual delayers of IRL dayjob & mental health.
    -How do you close out a riff piece based on people who moved on? Esp. when no animosity remains either side. Heck, even evolving to outright gratitude from mine to theirs?
    -How do you end a meta-narrative about two different rangers when the game is inevitably gonna just have one?
    -Largest of all. How do you deal with how hard SoW's ending S U C K S?!
    I think we've covered them all mostly in one way or another, I'm sorry it took so long - I'm not a very good nor fast "ideas guy".
    But let's quickly revisit that last one because it does define the video a bit.
    Both in gameplay & narrative, I truly believe SoW disservices itself & its character at the last. Not knowing that when I came to record it, I found all my ideas for finales (such as the LotR cast in group therapy after being replaced, or a fully-written Rap Battle that I would lose against ToG 'final boss') crumbling away. This also was a delay in itself. I don't know what they were thinking here. So my deepest earnest apologies for the rather boring gameplay on display here. I tried my best but wow it doesn't give you much to work with, even after grinding to Max for the strongest matchups. Plus, while we're here. I missed the SoM "Your worst Nemesis" boss design!! Mog The Poisoned deserved one last hurrah!
    But enough of that. The sour finale is over - go celebrate our Mordor lord of old. Say it with me, for old times' sake. "The T to the O to the goddamn G!" - Link in the endcard and description. For on this day, The Discount Ranger rides from Mordor forevermore! Peace y'all!

      As always, I'll be supporting you not because you might be a ripp-off of someone I might know, but because I like YOU. And your way of doing things. And as you may have seen it in Patreon, I don't intend on coming back on that.
      I didn't fully followed the game (as I jumped in after discovering XCOM:MBR), but your narration on this game was on par with your style, the one that made me like XCOM and the one that made me stay. Sucks the ending is bad, but the video was enjoyable. Just a regret to not have heard ToG rap battle ? XD
      So, what's next Discount Ranger / Commander ? In the category "great series I would ask death to wait just to see one more episode", what will be the next game ? (If you have any idea ?)

    The ONLY thing I truly hate about the ending? Talion's soul walks off into the sunset, but we don't see his family waiting for him. Talion's story is supposed to be defined by war, and I actually appreciate the twist that Talion was holding back Sauron's forces for years until his will finally gave out, because that makes Talion one of the strongest and most tenacious bastards in Middle-Earth. The dwarves could never be corrupted by the Rings of Power, but Talion WAS being corrupted and managed to hold on while also waging an unending war against everything in Mordor. And at the end he's freed from Sauron's control and can move on. So what SHOULD happen is that Talion should play the Old Soldier, finally coming back to his family after years of war. And we don't get that.
    As for Celebrimbor and Eltariel? Once again, my disdain for elves has proven validated, because Celebrimbor was slipping ever since he made that bloody ring of his, and his disloyalty to Talion because he objected to keeping Isildur enslaved and instead chose to KILL A BLOODY RINGWRAITH PERMANENTLY shows that the love between him and Talion had been well and truly lost, sacrificed on the altar of a dead elf's ego and ambition. And Shelob validates it all, saying that had Talion gone along with Celebrimbor's shit, the Bright Lord would have become a new Sauron, and Talion having a conscience stopped it. So where Celebrimbor fucked up royal, succumbed to his own personal evil and got screwed, Talion opted to stay true to himself, do the right thing, and chose to fight and suffer just to buy as much time for Middle-Earth, hoping he'd make a difference in the end.
    Also, FUCK Eltariel and her DLC. The characters in it are good, including the two Ringwraith OCs they came up with for it, but she DID NOT deserve a DLC. That shit should have been Talion's and Talion's alone. Show him trying to connect with his army and trying to maintain his sanity, actually shoring up the defenses to last against the sieges. Tie that shit into the Shadow Wars to help pace it out and give you a REASON to want to play defense missions all day. But no, gotta give the SECOND WORST female character in the game a DLC all her own and give Talion the shaft. And that's saying a lot when her competition is a spider old enough to have dated Sauron in High School, a tree with tits that can barely speak English, and Talion's dead wife
    Baranor's DLC is fine, even if it feels like Assassin's Creed: Middle-Earth at times and the difficulty is jarring to those who played the base game more casually. Man needed some love, and he got it.

    • @rayclawicefire2503
      @rayclawicefire2503 Рік тому +8

      agreed also Eltariel could have saved Talion in her DLC and chose not to.

    • @nicholasholladay-elser7307
      @nicholasholladay-elser7307 Рік тому +5

      While I agree with you in that it would have been nice to see his family, we are still shown that they are reunited with the white rose, the last gift Talion gave to his wife, growing next to his knife, the broken blade of his son. I think it's mean to symbolically show that they are together now but could have been made stronger if his sword or the broken remains of the ring was in the shot as well.
      As for the DLCs I haven't played her DLC so I can't really comment on it yet but I have done the Baranor and found it pretty good and a good but fair challenge as long as you are coming at it with a strategic mindset since you can no longer just throw yourself at the problem again and again until you kill it like you can in the base game. I honestly spent my time with it first collecting all the upgrades and money I could scavenge until I had all the upgrades and could afford some good legendary help.

    This has been... a long time coming. I could go on a 4000 word message about how this series has changed and evolved, but I feel like the only things I should really say are as follows
    1. Thank you, for the literal years of entertainment and content
    2. I completely understand how difficult it must have been to work with this game's trainwreck of a finale. Truly, the only thing that it did well was really show just how resilient and amazing a person Talion truly was, he'd have been a hero of legend, had he merely been born a few centuries sooner, with the blood of Numenor in his veins.

      I just assumed she was desperate to see Sauron’s reign end, since she was only in Mordor in the first place because Galadriel sent her to keep the Nazgûl in check. Problem is the Nazgûl are immortal, so she seemed doomed to fight them forever. When she and Talion were tracking Hammerhand, she told him “in the war against darkness, stalemate is victory.” This is probably what she told herself to cope with her doomed mission. However, when Talion kills one of the Nazgûl, Eltarial sees that her task was not, in fact, impossible. Celebrimbor offers a way not just to end Sauron’s reign of terror, but a chance to finally complete her quest. The chance she had of freedom from her burden blinded her to Celebrimbor’s true colours, unlike Talion who realised his friend’s new plan was not at all what he signed up for. While Eltarial tried to rationalise the betrayal by weighing Talion’s life with the fate of Middle-Earth, she ultimately made the wrong decision and was doomed to either failure or condemning Middle-Earth to the reign of a third Dark Lord.

      @@EditEdward I really loved Shadow of War, I definitely can see the hate for micro transactions but they aren’t needed to progress. The only problem I had with the game is that the interactions didn’t feel unique enough, after a while you hear the same monologue over and over again. I just wish more stuff from the trailers made it into the game. I could see the series going a few ways if they made another one. They could either show more of Talion during the shadow wars, they could have him come back from the afterlife after a dire call from Mordor or something (not a fan of this one), they could switch focus to Celebrimbor after the fall of Barad-Dur and his escape, hunting down his ring, and the final, most unlikely one. Since this series is not canon, they could let you play as Sauron (who should be dead, that’s why this is non canon), once again after the fall of Barad-Dur rebuilding his army and trying to regain control of Mordor. There is definitely potential for a 3rd game, but the only thing I want is for them to spend more time adding more unique interactions like the trailer had.

    • @EditEdward
      @EditEdward  Рік тому +1

      I think a lot of people hated the micros for the original Shadow Wars grindathon. But my personal main issue with it was how it afflicted the design philosophies. Primarily that they went in with the knowledge “you can always open and get a handful more uruk” - where SoM seemed built more on “every uruk is a long term investment we expect players to get attached to”.
      But for example with orcs having rarities, the cooler weirder ones being WAY harder to create (eg SoM if you wanted an arrow themed returner, kill him with arrow and if he comes back HIGH chance it’s with “the arrow scar”. Whereas SoW, it’s kill him with arrows and then it’s a 1/60 if he come back as the legendary arrowguy, vs coming back basic like nothing happened).
      The generally meatgrinder-y/disposable nature is also exemplified in the fight pits. Where SoM a warchief infil was “he has a trial you can escort him thru” now it’s JUST the 100% AI (and uninterruptible) fight pits. And not only can the AI derp out hard at random, ignoring rarity and level advantage, but early days fight pits could just delete totally unrelated uruk. With no way to reliably ress them; that can gimp a good “Right hand uruk” vibe in a heartbeat.
      Speaking of uninterruptable. Savior (originally) couldn’t be turned off and no-choice instagibbed enemies. There’s also debate that it may have slashed a nemesis’ chance to revive. Which, as proven in this series with The Stitch, can scupper a good, possibly rare rival before there’s any momentum. For a system that NEEDS you to lose for uruk to get a chance to revive (and thus get the best scars and storylines) that is a huge pain in the arse. But again, storycrafting wasn’t at the forefront.
      Blood Brothers just randomly growing on the walls, often appearing with no warning or popup and aligning with your own recruited uruk is also a bugbear. Since blood brother based betrayals often proc iron will. And removing iron will risks deleting your uruk’s personality via derangement all because they got a blood brother you never ordered them to get and the game didn’t inform you they had unless you made a point of hand-checking every uruk’s blood brothership every single time advancement. Feels again like even KEEPING the uruks you have wasn’t an important thing for their design philosophy.
      Allies can revive too now, great.
      Allies can bleed out now, great, except only applies to bodyguards or during sieges, not somewhere helpful like the fight pits. Oh and if they happen to be on a wall during a siege, screw you they’re permadead, no chance to revive ‘em.
      Epics and Legends are also objectively better than baseline uruk due to their traits. Which means if you have a basic boy you wanna keep alive the best way to do that is by using orders to put him on equal footing, which used to come from the boxes. That’s more an outlier one but still notable to me. Since if rarities didn’t exist, nor would them being objectively stronger (and more gameplay desirable) options.
      The last part being that with so very many slots to fill between warchiefs and overlords across EVERY fort. Chances of having quality lads in every slot is low - which then I’d presume started to hit home harder in Shadow Wars when Sauron would roll out strongtier rare lads with iron wills. But again I didn’t experience that.
      Don’t get me wrong, I love Some of what they did with the nemesis system and the interactions. But there are/were a lot of quite apparent holes in it that they just didn’t seem interested in fixing until they had to remove the boxes, (or still haven’t fixed at all) because you could always plug or supplement them by buying/grinding s few crates and gambling for the best. Which is hardly a basis of good balanced design imo. Similar to if a roguelike balanced itself around only the most overpowered combos knowing if players roll the dice / rerun enough times its inevitable they’ll get an OP build.

      @psycho7337 Рік тому +1

      @@EditEdward Yeah I can see where you coming from, I guess there are features I am turning a blind eye to or just overlooking. The whole pit fight/lazy captain AI is very annoying and terrible, especially if it’s a guy you like in the fight pits, then he just stands around taunting while getting beat to death. The savior system I actually like. I understand that sometimes your savior kills an Uruk that could potentially play a big role in you Nemesis system immersion, but you gotta admit that it feels awesome to see an orc you like save your life. Getting unique Uruks you like can be very difficult and annoying, but it is understandable when there are so many different variations of a scar or personality. I don’t really have much of a comment on the bleeding out system, there are moments where it feels fine, like during a large and powerful siege defense/attack, and there are times where it feels out of place such as just a normal duel mission. The blood brother thing sort of ties in to another gripe of mine, every single captain I fight has death defying. I don’t know about you, but when I spend 10 minutes downing a damn near invincible captain, I am very upset that he along with the guy I killed 5 minutes ago has death defying, it really starts to annoy me. An easy fix is to just considerably lower the chances of an Uruk having a blood brother or death defying. I also don’t have much to say about the legendary/epic captain vs a normal one. I’m the kind of guy that always has the training orders and miran to spare, so it has never been a problem of mine. There are definitely some broken systems in this game, but I’m sure if they do make another game, these will be touched up on. All they need to do is just spend more time looking into the smaller details like these. Shadow of War is the kind of game in which the little details are what makes the big part of the game so amazing.

A lot of attempted “LotR-speak” that just muddies things and also I swear SoM/SoW was meant to be offcanon. What was so wrong with just letting us have a big bombastic finish? Put no, grindathon to encourage lootboxes a gogo

    I was your 69th view~ hell yeah.
    And Ed, I have loved your stuff for a good long time. When I saw you change at the end of XCOM:MBR, I'll admit I teared up alittle. But I was so happy that it ended up best for you. I know you don't post as much as other content creators I watch, but you hold a special place in my memory. Whenever I feel like giving up, I watch your XCom. Whenever I just need a laugh, I watch Discount Ranger. Whenever I need silly song covers to brighten my normally dark days, I have a few to choose from, thanks to you. Never try to be more than you are, because you, OEM persona or no, are the person who has made me smile when I would otherwise have given up. Thank you, and I will always be a teacup.

    oh boi, sure has been a ride that's for sure, I'll admit I only initially found this series while I was looking for SOW videos of people like sethorven (didn't know TOG was a thing back when I found this pretty sure), and after a while of watching your videos I kinda just... fell off from watching your videos? (alongside seth and TOG himself, probably didn't help that the videos kinda just went adios from my notifications at some point) Hadn't even realised you had changed your name until I decided to try and find this series again, straight up went something along the words of "where the fuck did OEM go", I'll admit, I don't mind the style change, but it still was surprising, still though, this was INEVITABLY going to end, every story has its end after all
    oh and don't worry, there indeed WAS a sequel hook, in the fucking almost completely non-canon DLC (I think, and honest to god HOPE, its non-canon anyways), unfortunately we ain't gonna get a follow up of that because instead we get a golum game, and until (and if) we get a announcement trailer on that sequel, we're straight up gonna have no info on what's happening next
    also one last thing, those TOG Sauron edits were godamn cool
