Emergency! Behind the Scenes Facts & Secrets

- Fans of the pioneering TV series Emergency! probably already know that it was a spin-off of the shows Dragnet and Adam-12. Jack Webb and Robert Cinader, co-produced the show with unprecedented attention to detail and realism to usher in a bold new genre of municipal services based TV shows.
NBC would follow the pattern laid out here with later popular offerings like Law & Order and Chicago Fire. Not only was Emergency! entertaining, but it was also borderline educational.

The excellent script was supported by a truly superb cast. Roy DeSoto and John Gage, played by Kevin Tighe and Randolph Mantooth respectively, made up the Station 51 dynamic duo. Then we had Dr. Kelly Brackett - played by Robert Fuller - and Dixie McCall, the lovely nurse played by Julie London, to round out the cast that was packed for of heroes and heartthrobs that grabbed audiences by the stethoscopes and kept us coming back for more.
Emergency!, was an amazing series and Jack Webb was one amazing TV producer. Not only did he help launch shows like Dragnet and Adam-12, but he was a quintessential founder of the municipal services themed TV show. Most notably, he was the producer of Emergency!, a show created by Robert Cinader and Harold Bloom.
Emergency!, follows Squad 51, EMS responders from Station 51 in Los Angeles County. Randolph Mantooth, Kevin Tighe, Julie London, Bobby Troup, and Robert Fuller gave us some breathtaking performances in this show that captured realism in a way that audiences had yet to see on television.
Fans of the show will probably be surprised to see all of these facts that we've managed to uncover about one of TV's finest rescue shows. Find out all the details that you never knew like how Station 51 eventually became a real-world fire station or why they producers of the show had to slap the opening credits with a disclaimer to prevent people from attempting the medical procedures they saw on the screen.
Find out about all the secret cameos and momentary mash-ups that were thrown into the show as Easter Eggs to see if audiences were paying attention.
Did you know that Emergency also ended up inadvertently saving people's lives by inspiring a movement to adopt EMS across the country? When the show first premiered it was merely an experimental concept to have emergency responders come to your aid when things went awry, but look how things have changed since then. You're not going to want to miss this video. You'll never look at the show the same way ever again. - Розваги

I love thiss I love this show I have been watching it ever since it came on and I am 71 years old and in a wheelchair now and I watched emergency all I love this show it is so realistic I grew up in Hollywood California on before I moved to Colorado and I love seeing your trucks go by California and places I've seen I'm glad they do those rescues they're all worth seeing did you know if you
Yes, but not a fan of how this whole piece was narrated. Maybe next time find a narrator who can at least pronounce the actors' surnames (as this one gave us 2 different variations of Kevin Tighe's... neither of which I hadn't heard of at least). Might help too if the narrator saved some of his snarky comments (like referring to John Travolta as "Johnny") and quits begging for "Likes" (like a dog) during the segment. In other words, please at least find someone who doesn't sound like such a "doosh"!
This show made me go to paramedic school and I was a paramedic for 36 years
I couldn't do it and see the stuff yall have to see...especially children. Thank you for everything you do for us
Thank you for your service. First responders do not get the credit that they deserve, but I am glad that you went in to that profession. Wow 36 years that is a long time. Um, are you still a paramedic, or have you retire?
I am retired. Thank you for replying
Me too I am a retired paramedic as a young person I wanted to be Johnny gage
That was the purpose of the show. Just like Angie Dickinson in Police Woman was planned to get more women to take the Civil Service tests to have more women on police forces across the US.
I joined the volunteer fire service in 1981, in part because of this show. Today, I am a career firefighter, 39 years total firefighter. I actually attended the 50 years celebration of LA County paramedic program in Bellflower last year. Sat with Mr. Tighe and his family. Very nice people.
The show was groundbreaking and made history also. This is why paramedics/EMT/EMS is now nationwide. If not for this show these would not be available.
Thanks for watching!
I never became a Paramedic, but I LOVED the show Emergency. I ended up becoming a Police Ofc. who would work with Fire Rescue. I have ALWAYS been impressed by the work these brave men & women do. I wonder how many became Paramedics as a result of "Emergency." Regardless they deserve our profound respect for the work they do.
We're happy to know that you love the show. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and your life story. If we may ask, which episode did you like the best?
I became a CNA in a long term Care
Emergency was and still is one of my favorite shows. I use to watch it with my grandparents on Saturday night. IMO we need more programming like this.
Yes we do
Great show!! Still watching it 2023. Never gets old.
We're happy to know that you love the show. In your opinion, what is its best episode?
Emergency was one of my favorite shows as a kid! I loved it!!! I was a fan of Adam 12 and Dragnet as well. I think the Dragnet episodes were reruns when I saw them though. These shows of the 70's were part of my growing up. I went on to love Chips and Trapper John too!!!
The pop star Bobby Sherman appeared in an episode, and was so impresses by the paramedics who worked as technical advisors to the show that he actually became a certified paramedic.
And a reserve deputy officer for San Bernardino County Sheriff's office
Bobby Sherman play as a doctor on one episode who was cocky and a snob towards the 2 paramedics. He was much better as a singer who sang Julie Julie Do You Love Me in 1970 or maybe 1971.
For the police department
Actually he became an EMT not a Paramedic.
And now he is celebrating 80 years old.
I hate that these days are gone this was a great time to be a kid I was born in 1965 !!!
This was my favorite show. It inspired me to become a firefighter. I retired last year after 38 years ONLY because I turned 57 years old. My daughter somehow was able to contact Randolf Mantooth and he sent me a really nice retirement video. It was a pretty long video. Very special.
We're happy to know that you're a fan of the show. In your opinion, what is its best episode?
As I am sure many others have the same story. I became a firefighter/Paramedic because of this show. I would say this show was the best recruiting tool for fire and ems they could have had in the 70’s and 80’s. I still watch it today and occasionally see an episode I missed growing up.
I was in grade school & junior high during the run of EMERGENCY! But I absolutely fell in LOVE with the show. I still watch the show on sindicated reruns. I also own the complete DVD collection of EMERGENCY! In fact it was this show that inspired me to become a real life EMT & Paramedic!!
Awesome - Thank You - Because of that show I am the Chief of an Emergency Medical Service in NJ.
Thanks for watching! We're so glad you enjoyed this video. What other types of videos would you like to see?
Kudos!!!
I’ll never forget getting grounded because EMERGENCY was my favorite show. I even had the lunch pale. Anyways, I was about 7 years old circa 1973 when my parents were visiting friends of the family one Saturday night and I was worried that this visitation was going to cost me the privilege of viewing my favorite TV program, pre VCR days. I was warned if I kept pressuring my parents to leave I was to be grounded and punished by missing EMERGENCY for two more consecutive weeks. Well I had to learn the lesson that parents set the rules and believed children “should be seen and not heard”. Finally caught those episodes in reruns and had to sit in my room while the rest of the family enjoyed Johnny and Roy. In conclusion in 1990 I did become an EMT and later a Paramedic in 1999 and was fortunate the fire department I worked for paid for both licenses. Hard to believe I’ve been in EMS for over 30 years.
My favorite episode is the one where Gage and DeSoto have restored an old 1930's fire engine and while driving it to a parade, dressed in period fireman uniforms, they go to a real fire and rescue several trapped people before the on-duty firemen get there. Their restored fire truck is damaged when a section of the burning building collapses on it.
Fun fact, during the filming of the episode , Randolph, was driving the 1930's engine and crashed it in to a wall and hit his head on the steering wheel. That is why you see Johnny with a bandage on his forehead at the beginning of the episode and that is why they made Roy drive the engine instead of Johnny. Love the episode too.
OMG I was just thinking of that episode before I even read your comment!! Wow!
Yeah, I watched Emergency every day it was on when I was in elementary school. Good times!
I am 53 years old and viewed the show when i was a kid and still love it like the first day.
Julie London who played Dixie McCall was a well-known blues/jazz/lounge singer who had several albums to her name. Her most famous song, one that was written especially for her was, Cry Me a River. Her albums are well worth listening to
She was a real beauty and a talented singer.

At the age of 25 become a Lt and the only female firefighter paramedic in my family. My dad and three brothers was firefighters and my dad was a volunteer fire chief for 21 years before he passed away.

AMEN ON SWAT I LOVE THAT SHOW I HAD A BIGG CRUSH ON ALL THOSE SHOWS EVEN STARSKY & HUTCH OH YEA
Been a paramedic firefighter for 30 years and it all started with this show
As a former paramedic/firefighter, I would have no problem having John & Roy treat me for a medical emergency. They always performed with competence and were compassionate towards their patients.
Emergency was my introduction to EMS! I watched the show every time it was on. Years later I began an EMT for 10 years, I even went to paramedic training but couldn’t finish needing a surgery just before my practicals. I still watch all types of programs on EMS and rescue work.
I grew up watching emergency and I still do like watching the show, one time I asked a firefighter how accurate was the emergency show and he said it was pretty accurate for those days and he said it was a very good show.
I got a job as a paramedic in 1976 and worked 20+ years, then left to be a phlebotomist. Now I am nearing retirement as a registered nurse, but my career choice was heavily influenced by my father's sudden death from a heart attack and this TV show. "The boys" made me realize that prompt, professional care could make a difference in someone's life; they were right!
It was because of "Emergency" that I spent a 25+ year career as a Firefighter-Paramedic and over 30yrs as a volunteer firefighter in Connecticut and after I retired, also in New York
I had heard that Kevin and Randy saved someones life, for real at a Hollywood party. The man was choking, and they performed the Heimlich Maneuver on him, saving the man's life.
And that's the Tooth.
And that's the Tooth.
Randy also did the same thing on an actual Air Plane when someone was having heart problems like he did in the episode where they are coming back from a trip they had to do to learn more about Paramedic Life saving techniques. When Johnny was flirting with the Stewardess.
That was an episode.
@@martywall6199 May have also been a real separate incident.

The fire stattion at Universal studios, was originally LA Co station 60. It was changed to 51 after the series ended. The offer to Randolph Mantooth to be hired as a real firefighter, came from the actual LA County Fire Chief Howtz. (TV Land interview with Randolph Mantooth video, on UA-cam.)
You are right. Universal Studios was and still is a small but very valuable unincorporated county island surrounded by the city of L.A. and it's value and distance from other county stations necessitated placement of a staffed fire crew at the studios long before the show was ever thought of.
As the studio grew into a resort and amusement park the need for increased staffing associated the building of new and larger fire station. When that station was completed it was dedicated with the new station number 51 and the addition of a rescue squad for the first time.
At least four of the major movie studios have their own on-site fire departments including full-time private crews, but universal is the only one to have a taxpayer-funded fire crew located on studio.
Among the studios that have their own private fire departments are Warner Brothers and Disney in Burbank.
I'm not sure even Chief Hours could have made that job offer. It would have broken civil service rules and employee contracts
Even though it is a county fire station, Universal gets a bill from the county fire department for their services. The station does respond to off site emergencies, usually mutual aid for LA City Fire
@@paulndaoc The LACoFD Fire Chief's name is spelled Houts.
@@caryeastwood6691 The studios were and may still be part of the Universal Fire Protection District and pay as part of property tax not direct billing. They may have been pushed into the Consolidated FPD just like Dominguez and Wrightwood were.

This show made me dream of being an EMT...unfortunately they didn’t hire woman back then yet.
Me Too Brothers... 23 year career FireFighter. This show started me down the path, it made a very big impression on me as a kid. Johnny Gage was the man!
Emergency was the best show ever
Retired EMT after 34 years in EMS. I was hooked at 6 years old...the show premiered on my birthday. Had a full time career as a social worker so never made it to paramedic, but when I certified EMT-I in 2003 I found it interesting that the training was more advanced than paramedic had been in earlier years. Intubation and IO infusion were included in our certification.
One thing you forgot to mention > there was 2 actual LACFD fireman who was on the show ENG Mike stroker ,and CAPT Dick
Hammer ( season 1 shows 1-10) and as well the voice of the dispatcher sam laneir who was a actual LACFD dispatcher
I was shocked they missed Stoker. They got him because they wanted someone legit for the truck as it was an expensive prop!
Back in the day when kids played outside and used their imaginations, me and my best friend played Emergency every day! He was Roy and I was Johnny. We found old ropes that we used for our rescues and we both had metal lunchboxes that were our medical kits. Those were the good ol days.
This show will never gets old although it has been on this long in reruns.
Once a fan, always a fan. If I had grown any bigger as a kid, I wanted to be a paramedic…never got past 5’2”, so I went into research science instead, but still became a first aid and CPR instructor for the Red Cross. Never miss an episode if I see one playing…always hoping it will be the rattlesnake one.

I had the Emergency! board game. Wish I knew what happened to that
In 1976 I was 19 a Navy Corpsman because I knew I wanted to be in medicine since I was 13. Didn't really know what I wanted to be so Corpsman was a good start. One night after my shift at the hospital I saw "Emergency" THAT'S IT, THAT'S WHAT I HAVE TO BE...a Paramedic. Not many paramedic schools back then and they were all expensive, took me 7 years but I did it. Johnny Gage and Roy Desoto were my hero's. My son has taken over where I left off and is currently a paramedic. Emergency created a dynasty in my family.
I love this show! It is one of my favorites! Along with Adam-12 and Dragnet. You should do those next! I would trust Station 51 to come to my time of need because they get the job done!
I became a EMT because of this show. I was born in 1961. I did other things 1st but at age 38 quit my UPS job of 17 years because it wasn’t my passion. Started school at 38. Months later tested and got a job in Charlotte. I just retired after 21 years of service. Best job I ever had. Mantooth has spoke at our annual service awards before. Like 10 years ago. This show is responsible for EMS as it is today. Can’t tell you how many partners I rode with over my career who have this exact same story to tell. Maybe the most influential show ever created.
Fun stuff, thank you so much for sharing your life story. Guess it shows that you're a big fan! Which episode is the most memorable for you?
Emergency wrote the play book on advanced emergency medical care. My department followed it closely and the citizens in our city benefited greatly. Captain (retired)
I was a Volunteer Firefighter in Kentucky and there was a firefighter who was also an Emergency Medical Technician Supervisor with the Emergency Medical Service for Jefferson County Kentucky.
FYI, the FETV network is showing back to back Emergency! episodes nightly from 10pm till midnight EDT.

Awesome show! Never missed it growing up! It inspired me to become a volunteer fire fighter and EMT in 1979.
What struck me aside from *Emergency* being a good show was the camaraderie amongst the actors in the show. It was very good, and you could tell they got along and liked each other away from the set. Good casting by Jack Webb.
Because of this show I went on to become a paramedic in LA County.
Emergency was our regular Saturday night TV show when I was a kid. I remember the 2hr pilot where Roy DeSoto recruits Johnny Gage into paramedic training from the old-style rescue squad. They wanted to be ready to go when the state assembly voted to approve paramedic units in California. Later, DeSoto has to debate whether to administer treatment to a critical accident victim without legal authority, and the doctor lies to him saying that they'd been approved. After treating the patient successfully they find out that the vote had only been held moments before and they would've been liable had they helped the patient only a few minutes earlier.
Back in the day my brother & I were faithful watchers of Emergency. it was an influence on him to become a fireman/E. M. T. upin the Seattle area, after 33 years he retired but said he loed being to help people in need. These kind of guys r the real heroes of today. I am still a huge fan of mergency, it's an awesome show I ust can't get enough of John & Roy!
I was a huge fan of Emergency as a little 70's kid back then. Bobby Troup who played as Dr Early sang "Get your kicks on route 66". Randolph Mantooth as a paramedic/firefighter played in 2 episodes of Battlestar Galactica in 1979 as Michael. I always wanted to be a firefighter but in 2019 I became a medical assistant student. Dang they sure don't make these TV shows anymore. 🚒 📺 🇺🇸✌❤😄😊☺😁
I watch the show every day. It's as good then as it is now! That's Real a great show # 51 to the Rescue!!!!🚒
Emergency was one of the reason I became a firefighter/paramedic. Going through paramedic school our instructor said I don't want anyone doing a gage and desoto. In the opening credits you see them popping preloaded syringes we still used them at the time and she didnt want us doing that. Lol some of us did just to drive her nuts
I enjoyed the show very much. Their dedication and concern for people. There were episodes when Gage and Desoto helped people when they were off duty. I love the medical field. So the show was right up my alley.
One of my all time favorite t.v. shows ever, I love it !!! I watched this as a child back in the 70's. I got it on dvd now and rewatching it as an adult !!!

This very show inspired me to become a New York State Certified EMT, and I actually enjoyed helping people, and saving lives within my Commuinty for about 10 years, before I moved away to Pennsylvania.
This show caused me to join the fire department and EMS
Kevin and Randolph had to take a crash Paramedic course before the show started.
There was an actual Paramedic on set as an advisor.
Except for Kevin. Randolph, and Tim Donelly, the other guys at Station 51 were real Firefighters.
Actually, Marco Lopez, was an actor. He did many shows and was often called by his real name. Captain Hammer was a real firefighter but quit after just a few episodes so that he could be a firefighter. John Smith, an actor, replaced him for the rest of season 1. He portrayed Capt. Hammer. John Smith was best known as Slim on "Laramie," where he co-starred with Robert Fuller. Beginning the 2nd season they got a new captain, Hank Stanley. He was portrayed by Michael Norell. Mike Stoker would eventually retire with the rank of Captain.
Mike Stoker was the only cast member (apart form the original captain) who was a Firefighter. From what I read that was so they had someone who could actually drive the engine.
@@Booger414 He also had a SAG card. IMDB doesn't list him as having any credits other than "Emergency!" so I don't know why he had the card. I'll ask my daughter to see if she can find out through their mutual friend.
I listened to Mantooth talking about this. He said they took the whole course but didn't take the written tests.
Nope, marco captain Stanley were actors
I loved this show as a kid, and my son loved watching it years later when it was in syndication. Interestingly, one night, when I was sick with a respiratory infection and resting on the couch, he came over to check on me, looked at my hands and face, and called 911. He told the operator that I was cyanotic and in trouble...which I was. He told her my nails and lips were turning blue when she asked him what he meant by cyanotic. The paramedics arrived a few minutes later. They asked him how he knew I was in trouble, and he said he learned about low oxygen and its danger by watching "Emergency". So..by watching the show, my son saved my life. I'm forever grateful to him, and to "Emergency"!
This was one of my favorite shows in the 1970's. I loved this show.
Emergency And Adam 12 are still my favorite shows
I used to watch that show when I was young and always wanted to become one of those paramedics I was a firefighter for a while until medical reasons I can't do it no more
Started my firefighting career in 1973. 110 man 5 station department in Florida. We had a chief that loved this show and in 1974 we were one of the first departments in Florida to receive and put into use Biocoms. The exact ones you would see on this show. After that, all the units were equipped with defibrillators. Highly controversial stuff back then. Despite the show much of the medical community was a little hesitant about fireman doing this kind of stuff. In 1977 I became what at the time was called a 500 hour emt, we couldn't use the term paramedic back then, but a 500 hour emt had the training to, with physician oversight via the biocom, just like on the show, administer medication and start IV's. Just a few years earlier in our town, the funeral home was running the ambulance service. This show had more to do with the rapid progress we made in emergency services than I think anyone will ever know. And may that Chief, Harold Stinchcomb, rest in peace. He was a good man.
This is why I became a paramedic! One for 35 years now!
Fun stuff, thank you so much for sharing your life story. We're happy to know that you're a fan of Emergency! If we may ask, what is your favorite episode?

One of my favorite shows! I have season 1-5 on DVD. I watch them all the time! I would love to have John and Roy rescue me!
Just a great show. Waiting for it to come around again in the rerun circle. Adam 12 is on, right now.
More more more. Loved emergency.
Thanks FETV for showing emergency
This was a favorite show of mine back in the day, and I’ve been watching it again each evening. Glad I found it again after all this time.

@@FactsVerse I'm just now making my way through the seasons now, so it's hard to say. It's been years since I've seen them. I'm enjoying them.
I've always loved this show!
It made me join the local volunteer fire department in my area. I'm now retired after 28 years of active riding and driving the equipment.
This TV show inspired me to become a volunteer fire / EMT. Did so for 23 years.
