- In this video I dive into the common issues that occur with the VANOS system in the B38 and B48 engines, particularly focusing on the failure of the hydraulic actuator. You´ll learn exactly what goes wrong and how it impacts engine performance.
I will guide you step by step through the process of timing the engine and removing the VANOS sprockets. Whether you are a seasoned mechanic or a DIY enthusiast, this comprehensive guide will walk you through diagnosing and fixing the VANOS issues on your B38 or B48 engine. Stay tuned for part 2, where I will cover the engine build up.

Even though I wouldn’t do this kind of work it’s still interesting to see and the commentary progresses with the work and doesn’t continually reiterate information already covered, which normally has me reaching for the forward slider. Looking forward to Pt 2. Thank you
You’re just awesome and an amazing tutor for BMW DIY enthusiasts. Thank you and keep up with the excellent content
What a nice comment. I appreciate that you took the time to leave it 🙂
These videos are brilliant Ben!
I see the faults on a daily basis and I always advise our customers to replace the Vanos central bolts and Vanos hubs on both camshafts and this video perfectly explains why.
Do you mind if I share the link ?
Hello Simon 🙂 Please share it, of course.
Great as always and spot on. Great you take the time to share your knowledge and experience 👍
Glad you enjoyed it 🙂😊
Thank you well done... I actually have to do vanos intake actuator 230i b46 today🤗🤗
Oh haha fantastic 👍
Can you show the flywheel pin and location in part 2 please , great information so far thanks
I will for sure.
Wonderful tutorial. Especially appreciate the tips around removing the injectors. Still trying to root cause my B46 lugging/hesistation misfires without any codes. Wondering if there is a chance that codes would not be triggered by this failure? Also would be helpful to have a tutorial on how to record those waveforms of the intake and exhaust vanos cycles. Ty!
Also you might be happy to know the very latest engines are coming with ‘e-vanos’ fully electronic instead of oil controlled, I guess it’s the only fix bmw had for this fault.
I need to get on Tmsi and keep up to date 🙂
Great video. Really informative. I just did this on my b48.. but bought the wrong locking bracket tool... so I didn't take a chance messing things up. Where's the best place to buy the vanos locking bracket tool?
Dont buy Laser tools one - the kit is great but the locking plates are not strong enough and we are dissapointed. BDS or HCB are good
I’ve been seeing this failure in the states now that the cars are getting up in mileage. Particularly on the B48 so far. Now we have E-Vanos which will be interesting when those start to fail. There’s a thin sheet metal with springs to lock/unlock the rockers with an actuator to adjust it and the Vanos solenoids are now 3 phase motors lol way to over complicate it eh
FYI bmw say if it takes more than 13nm (if I recall correctly) to remove the injector with the tool then the injector needs replacing. I’ve snapped the heads of a few with the tool when they’ve been seized. Not fun.
I snapped one once too. I still have the tap and the tool I made to get it out. Crap injectors. GDI is garbage and nothing but trouble.
@@allmech_BMW_fault_finding a terrible design too, they could have easily made it so the rocker cover could clear the injectors.
Hey man so you work for an independent bmw shop right? Did you work for a main bmw dealer before that?
I do and yes I did
How many miles on that? Inside engine gives the impression it has been well looked after.
60 thou km
@@allmech_BMW_fault_findingquite an early failure then :-(
My B37 has a shake at idle. No codes at all. Ive checked the mouts and they all look gooed. Ive done smooth running test and im getting cylinder 1 - 0.52 cylinder 2 + 1.24 cylinder 3 - 0.46. any idea why the shake???
Leaking injectors
@@allmech_BMW_fault_finding thanks mate so replace all 3?
@raygen1 confirm with borescope first
Sounds similar to my issue. How do you confirm leaking injectors with a boroscope? Carbon buildup on pistons? I did pull the plugs and didn't smell any fuel on plugs. I checked the resistance of the Bosch injectors and they were 1700 mOhm when Bosch specs 1500. That said I'm not sure if measuring resistance of coil works for a solenoid-type injector. Thank you
