- In this video we Diagnose the P20E8 faultcode often found in Peugeot, citroen, Opel, Vauxhall, Fiat and Toyota diesels.
Along the way i take the time to explain the system step by step.
Enjoy the video, i hope it's helpfull.

lot of work and thoughts to get such a brilliant explanations videos with all the issues and steps to check like the working tank on the bench.
What has happened with the Mercedes A Class from last summer - I mean 2023 ?
That had many fault codes and you wanted to diagnose it later cause I had seen it only once after that: in the bmw video.
thanks
@@typxxilps eventually it was fixed but it turned out it had many issues and also had been involved in an accident and it was poorly repaired. We had to redo much of the repairs. Eventually it was fixed but with the background and history of the car we didn't feel comfortable selling it full price to one of our customers. So eventually we sold the car at an Auction for an Auction price.
I work at a Peugeot dealer as a Master Technician and have done 100's if not 1000's of fault findings of these Adblue systems throughout the years.
The video is very very good and the DDTSB information you flashed up on screen is pretty much spot on with my thoughts, experiences and conclusions.
Couple things I'd like to add / correct. Note - these are my own thoughts, theories and results from experimentation - I could be wrong - it's just what I have seen.
Like Dan said - the 4 bar pressure reading doesn't mean anything, it just means there is no pressure in the system since there is never a point of operation where the pressure drops below 5 bar. The reason for this is not necessarily and only the pump having failed as many think. The P20E8 is in my opinion a badly worded fault code and should instead be worded as "P20E8 - Tank internal fault" because the control unit of the tank runs it's own internal check of all components before turning on and activating the system and if it finds anything out of the ordinary it will not energize the system and will flag P20E8 - Low pressure which as I said just isn't true and is badly worded - there is "low" pressure because the system isn't turning on - not because there actually is low pressure during operation.
I've tested many many tanks after having replaced them to play around with them for fun and test each individual component, I personally have never had an internal component actually fail and not respond to voltage being applied - pumps, valves, sensors, temp sensors, heaters, level sensors and so on - for me they've always worked when tested individually. I've seen corroded circuit boards from the internal pipe connections leaking and filling up the cavity and eventually all the way up to the board and thus corroding it. Many times I feel there is something wrong with the circuit board or the logic of the circuit board and not actually with the physical components of the tanks themselves. I've sometimes tried to swap individual components like pumps etc from a known good working tank but it never solved anything. I've tried to flush the whole system with warm water and separately activating the pump and shutoff valve with a disconnected injector to flush everything through the whole system - for me personally this has not solved any cars - I might have been unlucky and only done the flush on circuit board damaged tanks though - who knows, maybe there are some cases where flushing would help because I've also many times had the theory that crystallization is at fault inside the tank - personally as I've said I've not been able to ever fix a tank by removing the crystallization through flushing.
Next important thing that I maybe think Dan might have overlooked / forgot - If there is a P20E8 fault in the ECU for Adblue it will not even try to start the tank until the fault code is correctly reset and all activation / command functions will not work either - like activating the pump. To actually get the system online again and to make it try to run again or to get it to respond to commands you need to not only delete the fault code but also perform a "Re-initialization of the Adblue system" before it starts working again. Just deleting the fault code without doing the initialization procedure is not good enough and will not work if you want the system fully reset and able to respond to all your commands and activations - my theory is that perhaps Dan forgot the re-initialization procedure and only deleted the fault codes which is the reason the pump activation didn't work through the scan-tool with the old tank until the new tank with no faults inside and fully reset memory was plugged in after which it worked - perhaps Dan can confirm or deny this. Remember to perform a re-initialization / reset of the system before testing because just deleting the fault codes is not good enough.
Overall this is an extremely extremely frustrating fault to have as a technician because whilst replacing the tank solves the issues 99/100 times I never actually know what's wrong inside the tank and have not been able to find out through countless experiments and dissections of old non-working tanks either. I think it's most often a circuit board issue and not a mechanical one inside the tank - of course that happens but I don't think it's very common and neither is crystallization damage. I know of companies who repair these tanks and I always wonder what the solution is, I'd love for someone else to chime in with their results and theories or solutions they've found to actually fixing a tank with another method that isn't just replacing it.
I'm happy to answer and help with any questions, I have also commented under almost every single P20E8 video here on UA-cam with more bits of information and my thoughts and findings - check them out if you want to learn more because I don't want to make this comment infinitely long - it's already bad enough ;)
Very good comment.
Many thanks for this interessing information.
The problem with these cars starts when the adBlue tank is not filled at the "right" time. The first warning probably comes from 3000 or 2500 km, and if you drive until it shows 2000 and below, you will probably end up with a bigger problem. Newer models from 2023 have this problem fixed. No warranty is offered, of course, although that could be exactly where the manufacturer should be sued and asked for a refund due to faulty design.
@@jyrgen3 Do you mean that problem is fixed because they are not providing any warranty for adblue system? :)
@@jyrgen3Warranty is offered and there even is extended warranty for specific Adblue issues. In some countries like my country of Sweden there is also a mandatory emissions component extended warranty of 5 years / 80000 km. Those few times the warranty isn't covering anything usually insurance will. Very few cases where the customer truly doesn't get help from anywhere and in those cases usually it's deleted.
I'm in Australia, been a mechanic and an auto teacher for many years. Your videos are spot on. Well done.
I always give Dan's videos a thumbs up before I watch it. I've never had to go back and change it! You da man, Dan.
I do also, its just second nature to give Dan all the support now because he's so kind and helpful. One day Dan will trick us all with a boring video with just a quick intro and a photo of a bottle with some repeat music and he will be counting his best fans lol.
Big spender you are
Eventually I have to smuggle a diesel into the country since I can't buy it here, so I really enjoy seeing how they operate.
It's a given that if you can't buy the engine, you can't get the electronics for it either.
Agreed! Do the same 👌👌
@@careyautorepairsha ha you know i never will be that mean🤣
A blocked urea fluid pump? Have you tried cranberry extract? 😂😂😂
Could be a stone, uff !

Thanks also for all the trouble you go through in filming, editing and posting your videos. That's a lot of effort on your part.
And eating flies🤣🤣
Dan, providing these videos for free is beyond generous.......! It is so amazing to see the complexity of these vehicles. Your honesty, transparency, and sense of humour, make these videos so enjoyable. I do not work in this industry, but can only imagine how helpful this information would be to those who do this work every day. Wishing you and your business continued success. You deserve a million views IMHO..........! Thank you.
Wow must be my lucky day! So many fantastic comments! Thanks its really appreciated 😁👍
My neighbor had exactly the same problem. Flush the tank AND clean the blue cover from the tank. If the three (4?) little air holes are blocked the system shut down because of „wrong pressure“.
His dealer want 1.300 plus tax and labor. Problem was solved with € 25. Car is running one year since.
Regards from Belgium.
People are comparing diesel engines with Adblue with petrol cars! Makes sense... I can come with a point, had PSA diesel and petrol models from 20 years ago without any of the problems we see here... If we start to compare what is not comparable to make a point we can come with models from the same brands from the past to say the same thing.
Ok and where are the little air holes for cleaning?thanks
Dealers are Stealers, always, you buiy a new car and you can get almost the whole world from your dealer, but if you leave with the car the gate, than the dealer is not reach anymore, so Dealers are Stealers always!!!!
Getting DDTSB in our shop was the best decision ever!!!Highly recommended, saved us hours and hours of diagnosing time.
Thanks for the great feedback 😁😁😁😁
Thanks Dan ! ..... best blooper segment ever ! ..... def ........ definitely engineered funding
Remember i had to eat a fly for that🤣
As a garage owner & fellow UA-camr I would have to agree that DDTSBs is the best spent money for me. We use it everyday on more complex issues & it always helps us in our diagnosis. I also watch the educational videos on it most days while eating my lunch 😊
It is excellent value @ around €350 or so per. annum.
Excellent tutorial Dan, I really enjoyed it 👏👏👏
Thanks for the great feedback! Great to hear you also have a YT channel! Keep up the good work!
This video finally explained the noise my van makes when i shut it down! was wondering for years...
🤣🤣 now you know
Dan you are the man your bloopers are fantastic it shows your one of us that get tongue tied I normally find it’s when I go to the bar 😂👍🇬🇧
I really struggle sometimes, especially when i get tired🤣 In the bar when i sing karaoke it goes a lot better 🤣
Brilliant video again. I really think that PSA should give an extended warranty of at least ten years on the tanks. They are in no way fit for purpose. I’ve seen this issue many times.
Yeah, designed by the same guys that gave us the wet timing belt 😂
@@DrDre-ir4guwet timing belt is NOT a problem! The problem come from piston rings!
Proace owner here. I got same issues last winter. 2018 model so 6 years old. Toyota covered the 1800eur tank replacement since all service history was with Toyota dealership.
There is 6 years extended warranty from PSA for this issue. After that usually most insurance companies cover mechanical issues between 6-10 years of age on the car. For the cases not covered by warranty or insurance a delete is the most logical solution.
There are many lawsuits against them and they are loosing them. In Italy the issue showed in this video must be fixed by the dealership for free already and many more countries are following.
Love the way that you investigate and explain your work. Brilliant.
Thank you!
I love these videos. No one like DiagnoseDan. Absolute legend and wish he had more time for UA-cam.
No one like DiagnoseDan? 🤣
A very educative and also entertaining video. It made me forgot my faulty addblue headache
🤣🤣
Awesome diag! Thanks so much for explaining your mistakes in such a clear way! Absolute legend.
😁🤣
Another fascinating video from Dan, my days of worn cars has long passed, but I enjoy watching repairs and especially fault finding. Imho no one, that I have found, is better than Dan. I am still a petrolhead, but when I see the complexity of ICE in normal cars, the more attracted I become towards BEV's.
Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment its really appreciated!
Electrical issue.love your work Dan. I'm 54 years old and you never stop learning. But what learnt from this video, don't but vehicles with adblue.😊
🤣🤣
There is a software fix for this issue causing the pump to work for max revs for extra 5-8 seconds after the engine is off. This will prevent the crystallisation inside the pump. Unfortunately the dealership will update your models only if you already have a problem.
Thanks for the feedback
Brilliant Dan, always look forward to you're in depth diagnosis, a joy to watch, bloopers being the best bit !!!
Also if they are doing exchange tanks, it's vary likely to be a circuit board problem, as that part is probably easily repairable..
You are proberbly right😁
Interesting to see the diagnosis and fix, we see it too often at our dealership 😂.
Just a tip on expert/proace/jumper/boxer/vivaro with a 6.4 diesel norm there is a tsb stating you cant use decrystaliser because it can corrupt the Adblue concentration sensor
Thanks for the feedback!
Im not a mechanic at all but I am subscribed because your videos are so well presented and fascinating. Awesome work!
Thats great to hear, thank you😊
Luv this you tube channel, Dan is the man, what makes me laugh is we don't diagnose together, we watch clever Dan do the business
🤣🤣
Very informative video Dan. One small correction though .. A pump does not deliver pressure, it delivers flow. The performance, and power consumption are measured by the pumps ability to overcome a restriction to flow (causing system pressure).
eh eh eh lots say it, i say in the real world it delivers pressure; proof? no pump, no pressure
The only way i can measure how much restriction of flow the pump can overcome is by looking at the pressure it can deliver. How would you have worded it in this video if you did a test to see if it could reach the required pressure?
I would have been here sooner if I could have been but I had to clean and polish the Corvette. Dan you are the Man!
coincidence i was on my 5.0 HO here in portugalia
I'm surprised there is any paint left on your car! I should be bear metal by now 😂 You spend more time polishing it than driving🤣🤣
@@Diagnosedan lol 😁
I don't have one of these vans, and I'll never fix one, but I do diagnosis and from that point of view this video was super interesting, and I appreciated your experience and the fact that you're sharing it.
Thanks! What kind of diagnostics are you in?
Mooie duidelijke video’s, dankjewel. 😊
Just to add a lot of people don’t realise that these vans also run eloys/pat fluid as well as adblue and when they run out of fluid it shuts down the adblue system, people wrongly assume that additive just means adblue
Even alot of workshops struggle with this! And to be honest my aftermarket scantools sometimes get this mixed up as wel! Especially when the scantool just shows "activate additive pump" and it doesn't activate the AdBlue pump but the Eolys pump. Thats one of the things that actually happened off camera in this video. As i suddenly heard the clicking of the small Eolys pump when i thought i was activating the AdBlue pump!😅
Love the bloopers Dan. Your english is very good tho! Gave up being a mechanic when cars were much simpler and quite easy to work on.
A lot have changed 😉
@@Diagnosedan yes things have certainly changed. I own a twin turbo Subaru and had to do the motor up at 170000km, I had a friend helping, but what a terrible thing to get the motor out, and back in again.
U are the king of diagnose. I like the way you aproach the problem. Much respect!
Thank you!😊
Dear Dan, Thank you for the information you share with us. I may never get to work on any of these vehicles but the knowledge you share gives me the confidence and understanding of modern diagnostic methods and an insight into the design and workings of modern automobiles.
Best regards, Pierre.
PS: I spent 20+ years working as a telecommunications operations technical officer so fixing complex systems is something I have some experience of. I enjoy the thrill of the chase (so to speak) , cracking that elusive fault and the mindset and determination of the master fixer.
Thank you for the great comment, sound like you had an interesting job
Respect Dan
I hope i can come and visit you this Fall
Greetings from Oberhausen Germany ❤
Always enjoy the videos, the bloopers make them even better. Hope this finds you and yours well. Cheers from Florida!
Thank you Chris
I didnt expect the AdBlue- pump being in the tank itself but the packaging is probably better. What isnt better is probably PSA build quality that made the curcuit board not withstand against the AdBlue and harsh conditions :) Nice fix, even tho it was the expensive route this time around.
AdBlue is very corrosive and will destroy electronics. There is not supposed to be any AdBlue where the circuit board is located.
Nice to see you work in a Dutch garage 🙂
You are very good at what you do Dan. I really enjoy watching your videos. Learn something new every time. You bring honor to our profession my friend.
Thank you!
Dan we missed your videos, always a joy to watch! Great job!
Missed you to😂
That adblue crystal looks like early stage kidney stone! You are indeed a car doctor, making diagnosis based on evidence & science 💯 👍
I have a small one and i'm always afraid it one day decides to come out 😅
( And when i say i have a small one i'm talking about the kidney stone😂)
In the USA we call it( DEF )diesel exhaust fluid, it the same thing. I use hot water to dissolve the dry crystal and when the SCR decomp is clogged with dry DEF crystal I soak it in water to soft it before cleaning it. So next time use warm water to flush the tank out first and if it works drains out the water and add the DEF fluid.
Thanks for your comment!
Hi Dan. What a great video and I wish you had posted it a couple of months ago! Had the same problem with my C4 and couldn't reset it on the vehicle. Whilst trying to remove the tank, I managed to break off the nozzle so I had to buy a new one from Ebay. After fitting it still wouldn't work so I ended up having to take it to Citroen who reset it for €49. I will now be looking for some of that additive as well as trying to see if the pump etc are still servicable. May try to 3D print a new nozzle.
When researching this fault I also found some articles on failure of the pressure sensor as being the root cause. One guy was able to make an in-line substitute and wire that back into the system from bits off Amazon.
That guy is here in the comment section, but there are many more all with different theories😁
i'm sure you heard this before but dan's the man with the plan
😁
Great video.. thanks so much for hard work on putting together for us globally to watch Dan..
It's worth it when i read comments of people that appreciate it! Thank you
Great video Dan. Im only a petrol (or diesel) head. Really interesting to discover how this works. Thank you for taking the time to do this. Bloopers
If you ever give up engineering , you could do voice overs for Warner Brothers 😅😊
🤣🤣 Thanks for the great comment!
Great Video Dan, salty water (adblue) and exposed circuit boards sound like a dream match hahaha
Match made in heaven 🤣
It can also be software related. You can update the older tanks separately from the car via your PC. You can do the newer ones by updating the engine computer. I've had it happen a few times that it helped because something went wrong with the software on the circuit board.
Thanks for the feedback!
Great diagnosis. Thanks DiagnoseDan!
You are very welcome!
That def tank was programed to fail, to generate revenue
Truth
The irony that sometime somewhere a car will be junked because of a non functional 'environmental damage mitigation' feature.
Sometimes i think the same but it doesn't make any sense as they are loosing many lawsuits and in countries like Italy they already have to fix this fault for free. Many other countries are following.
Good work Dan! Ever thought about making a blooper compilation? 😂 would be so much fun 🤩
Thats what my son told me to do🤣
Another great video Dan. Look forward to the next one.
😁👍
Thank you Dan for this video AND especially the demonstration!
I didn't work on vehicles with DEF systems as retirement was in 2016. The L.A. City Fleet I worked in has gasoline, (or Petrol if you wish) CNG and some PRE-DEF diesel vehicles. I've seen some in IATN, but that's it. Your demo was GREAT!
I guess in general it's less common in the US as most diesels over there are the Heavy trucks stuff and not the people carriers. I hope you enjoy your retirement, enough time for watching UA-cam videos 🤣
Great video. Come on I dont want bloopers. This man is a professional!
You can stop the video before the bloopers😂

You made my day! Thank you very much, its really appreciated
In the UK.. Royal mail use these vans for delivery , constant stop start short journeys, lead to either total Ad blu failure or massive ad blu consumption. ... either way these vans are just not suitable for short journeys .
The exhaust needs to be very hot for the AdBlue to vapourize. Sometimes the desired temperatures are not reached.
Bedankt voor deze leerzame video 👍Ben toch nog wel benieuwd wat er mis is in de tank en het blijft toch vreemd dat het filter niet is te vervangen.
They don't want you to replace the filter. They want you to buy a new tank. 😫
Niets is (officieel) te vervangen en er worden geen reserveonderdelen geleverd. Alleen de gehele tank is te koop
Thanks Dan for another great video and for leaving your mistake in which shows how genuine you are 👍
😁🤣👍
Hi Dan, I have been watching your videos from the very beginning and love them. I have learned a lot from you. I have an f10 BMW 520i and I am struggling to find a fix for my parking sensors. All 8 do not work and there is a message on the dash board saying PDC failure. I have taken the car to many garages and no one has been able to fix it. A control module was replaced under the glovebox and still no fix. I would be willing to bring me car from the UK to your workshop just because i know if you look at it, it will get fixed. You can also do a video on it if you wish. Let me know if you're interested. Also I love DDTSB, it's the best thing every for a workshop and a clever idea!
Thanks for your great message. I can't believe they are not able to fix your issue locally. The Pdc system is a very simple system with a control module, distance sensors and a speaker......not much options for failure.
If you send me a mail with your exact location i might direct you to a workshop thats able to solve your issue in your general location

In the United States, Tank with Blue stuff, pumps and UREA are common terms for an RV toilet. I had to look up what Adblue was...DEF. I only watched the first few minutes. I started over after looking Adblue up. Finally I saw it on the dash screen but I was wondering if the Europeans had a toilet facility in the driver's seat. Dumb I know
totally dumb; and i hear that in 2027 pure piss can be used, new ionics will allow that, no more adit till you turn blue, or ammonia needed, All the lawmakers up here in Brussels, they who made this Pee Law hing mandatory are already starting to pish on a large container, they made this law too, and every urea car owner must do the same, and age it for 90 days; or else, the car will not start after 1000 kms; the dumbest thing i've ever heard for a set of wheels, karaaazy, man, karaaaazy
AdBlue is a registered trade name for the stuff you call DEF. But its know under many names in different parts of the world.

Amazing how complex this system is! Is running diesel really worth the effort? It must be really efficient! Great diagnosis, and I can tell a lot of extra effort went into setting up and documenting the tests. Bravo!
They are quite fuel efficient and they are pretty strong. Its all the emission stuff that makes them unreliable

Yeah, I have diagnosed more of my fair share of these urea problems.
In 90% of all cases, the reservoir has to be replaced or the injector leaks. A problem in the reservoir almost always means an expensive replacement part, which is ridiculously expensive!
So when a friend of mine also got this problem on his own car, he was given the opportunity to visit a tuner who disabled the system and gave the engine more power for €500,- and I totally get why he had this done to his car!
One spooky urea problem I diagnosed looked like it also was due to the reservoir, thech support then made some suggestions and I ended up replacing the vehicle wiring harness! Still no fix!
I decided to be stubborn and took my oscilloscope and measured signals on all components.
Long story short, there was a problem in the nox sensor after the urea cat and fap filter causing the CAN signal to drop.
Replacing the sensor fixed the issue.
I luckily don't work on these French cars anymore.
Great find! I've seen similar cases!!
Another thing is people buy badly stored abblue aka pizz. Almost all petrol stations keep it outside under the sun and all kind of weather. Also the date code is not always visible. It should never over 1 year old
Correct storage is important indeed
Really interesting Dan thank you, didn't know adblue was so complex, more to go wrong though!
It's not very complicated to be honest but i know that most workshops struggle with it
In Italie and some other countries (Belgium) there are lawsuits running against PSA.- for this specific problem. They are found liable for this and have to pay custumers back for this cost.
In Belgium there is extended warranty on these tank but i do hear dealers are billing customer and asking for warranty so getting double paid or not asking for extended warranty
@@Sean_Diagnostics Test Aankoop is looking to take this to court as far as I know.
In Italy they already lost and need to pay for all repairs AdBlue related
