DISCLAIMERS ON FORMATS COVERED:
Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth. Now Popular does not mean official even though two of the formats I will be covering were official formats being Japan Nintendo Cup and VGC, but it is an indicator of what a good portion of competitive players thought was “optimal” at the time. Also sometimes the Pokemon Battle Historia doesn't provide enough information to talk about certain Pokemon so I add Smogon analysis to make sense of it. This is pretty rare though.
To the people asking why I don't cover Smogon Singles for Gens 1 and 2: It wouldn't really be a history video if I covered those because online Smogon gen 1 meta to my knowledge wasn't actually played until late 2000s. I wanted to cover tournaments/competitive battling that was actually played during the early years of Pokemon (late 90s).
To the people asking why I cover Smogon at all for singles: To my knowledge, Smogon was the most popular format for Gens 3-5 and held a number of tournaments throughout the years. As for Gen 6, I am not covering Battle Spot Singles because there is more information and explanations about sets being used relative to their own meta on Smogon. In other words, there are few written analyses about Battle Spot Pokemon besides the Top tiers and I would like to avoid theorycrafting because it may have a hint of bias (though I theorycraft if I REALLY couldn't find information on a certain Pokemon). The keyword here is explanations. Though I did find statistics of most Pokemon used and most moves used, there wasn't really any explanations on why. Also the few Pokemon I did find analysis of for Top Tier Battle Spot Singles had very similar move sets to the Smogon OU sets anyway.
For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent and I will not fault you for using evasion or whatever, I just like examining popular tournament formats.

I feel like you missed a VERY important thing about Umbreon when it came around to gen 5. In gen 5 and onward, it fell in usage not really due to to other passers being more useful, it's because Mean Look + Baton Pass no longer worked! After you pass a mean look (or Spider Web, for that matter) they could switch, which pretty much crippled it's entire nitch and just became a boring old wannabee Blissey/Miltank Fusion that I guess could Foul Play. It's really a shame how much Umbreon was shafted in gen 5, it really did get nothing relative to it's Sunny counterpart.
MapCRimZ ah good catch. We will pin this. Our bad for missing that. Thanks!
MapCRimZ gen 7 is worst time for our little Eeveelution Umbreon. Umbreon easily can be replace by Alolan Muk and Alolan Persian with is way better than Umbreon. Alolan Muk only have 1 weakness plus a lot of resistance and 1 immunity. While Alolan Persian very fast and can support very efficiently not to mention the infamous z-Parting Shot and plenty supporting tool that can support out his team, plus have knock off which for how many generation Umbreon did not have access for this move but Alolan Persian, New Pokemon have this move in USUM by move tutor. I think gamefreak hate Umbreon so much.
xenonim2013 A-Muk and A-Persian are nothing like umbreon. Infact, the literal only similarity is that they are dark type.
If you want to list something that fills the same role as umbreon that also is dark type, Mandibuzz is probably the closest thing (tho it's not a cleric, which is pretty much Umbreons only useful role now). Otherwise it's literally a worse Vaporeon that learns Knock Off instead of scald.
Umbreons 1 nitch was passing Mean Look and it lost that. It's like if Forretress lost rapid spin and you try to find a reason to use it over Ferrothorn.
Forretress still has volt switch and toxic spikes over ferrothorn, so it's not the example you should put there.
They are similar and obviously ferrothorn is the better option because it has a recovery option that keeps it around longer but you can't substitute one for the other and expect them to work the exact same way.
A better example would be saying what reason you would have to use gastrodon over seismitoad if gastrodon lost recover.
DJarr216 ok sure you can run volt switch for ease of prediction/to tank damage do the switch in comes in free sure but that's like giving B Pass to umbreon a tank umbreon solely to dry pass and that's a reason to run umbreon over blissey or some shit. And i could make a same silly comment about TSpikes but like ok yeah I get it they're not /exactly/ the same but it fills the same role w/o it's nitch of spinning and spiking. Either way my point was comparing umbreon to A-Persian isn't a good comparison.
I like this Pokemon a lot (:
Lol of course you do
I never would've guessed...
Me too bro me too. They my frickin life (specifically shiny umbreon).
omg had no clue XP!
(i wanna call myself mysticaegislash now)
Same here, Mystic! He's been my favorite since I was 9. I'm 27 now. I love your videos btw (:
The Foul play is amazing, so many times they think they can boost with either sword dance or dragon dance and they die in 1 hit by foul play.
:o
Work excellently for Mandibuzz too
Umbreon getting 2nd at Worlds this year was really cool
Congrats on Umbreon making the 2019 Masters Final! Spoons crossed in luck for it's final game.
Spoons Crossed?
Alakazam Reference there.
@@dadorkdoge2689 Si, Si, oui...
I'd say umbreon hit me with charm right in the heart, he's my fav
I absolutely love this series it's so consistent in it's high quality and thoroughness. The only thing I could reccomend would be playing the Pokemon's cry whenever you feel appropriate.
Also people actually discussing the Pokemon in the comments, instead of just 'how good was actually' comments.
The questions in the comments section is one of the main gimmicks of False Swipe Gaming's channel.
Really wanting to see tentacruel featured
Considering it suddenly featured in this video as someone who could get past Gen 2 Umbreon, I can see it happening. Much like when Skarmory and Scizor were mentioned a lot and then a lot of support came for covering them
It really is, Cruel, that we haven't seen it yet!......... 🌚
Jamie Weir hahahahaha CRUEL hahahaha
Pat B 😊😊 merry christmas my dude!
I'd like a Tentacruel episode too. Even though it's completely overshadowed by Toxapex, it is a Pokemon with a lot of utility. Rapid Spin, Knock Off, Toxic Spikes, Acid Spray, and Scald to name a few moves in its arsenal.
If I could have a pokemon in real life, I would want an Umbreon. I love how it looks, and I really love the concept of a mysterious, dark themed dog.
mabostiff says hi
I'd say it's time for a remake of this video!
Time for Ampharos, the lighthouse Pokemon!
Trust thar hair
Ampharos all day
The best mon ever
I will not give up. How good was Pinsir ACTUALLY? Finish the holy trinity!
I believe it's time to break the Gen 3 barrier, and we haven't covered a Grass type in a long time, either:
How GOOD was Breloom ACTUALLY?
Edit: I found there's some support for Breloom already, and I'm honestly very curious about it in certain aspects. Sorry Sceptile.
No....I want Sceptile....
Tropius would be nice to see too
No starters?
There's no Gen 3 barrier
since Porygon Z was covered
Yes, support the Breloominati and break the gen 3 barrier つ ◕_◕ ༽つ
oh umbreon. back in 2001, in gsc era, me and my friends played pokemon stadium 2 every afternoon. since all of us had a gen2 game, we decided to do "gyms" of our favorite types and payed around that. note that we were 10/11 year olds that barelly knew any english (PORTUGAL CARALHO) and we didnt knew about "competetive" sets or "banned" pokemon. so the owner of stadium 2 choose Fire Type because he loved Oh-oh and Charizard, and his team was Oh-oh, Moltres, Entei, Charizard, Typhlosion and Magby (this last one was filler from stadium 2 itslef). His cousin choose psychic and his team was... Mewtwo, Mew, Lugia, Celebi, Alakazam and Starmie (the last 2 were fillers)... the third, who was the only one who though strategy before strengh, choose normal and his team was Snorlax (damn this one gives me nightmares), Blissey, Miltank, Smeargle, Pidgeot and Raticate (Pidgeot was filler, raticate not so much... superfang was scary). I was the last one, and choose dark. My team was simple since there were only 6 dark types xD houndour included. And houdour was the filler one from stadium. And my team worked around umbreon. We didnt care much about strategy back then, hell we didnt even knew the point of set up moves, until i acknowlegde in game how fustrating it was to kill koga muk after 2 minimizes.... and though "the only way i have to beat those teams is by setting up". So, my team, that only lost to the normal team but were like 10-9 to the normal team was:
1st and the most important: umbreon with mean look, baton pass, double team and rest, item brightpowder. this was simple trap a favorable pokemon, either the filler or another that couldnt do much, start double teaming, pass the double team to another pokemon. the sole reason i used mean look over substitute was that if the trapped one was set up fooder for umbreon, it would be for sneasel.
2nd sneasel: my favorite xD it had dynamic punch for the normal types, CURSE AND AGILITY, and beat up, item kings rock. i loved this one. after 6 double teams from umbreon, nobody could touch you. after 2 curses and 2 agilties, you would outspeed and hurt everyone. it only lost to the normal team when dynamic punch became dynamic miss and the pp went out... beat up plus kings rock meant flinch for everyone... or so i though....
3rd murkrow: again, thanks to double team, this was a nightmare. toxic, protect, fly and nightshade, item leftovers. stall stall stall. bad defenses are nothing if they cant hit you xD
4th tyranitar: earthquake, rock slide, crunch and hyper beam with quick claw... yes, now i know that it wasnt the best set in the world, but back then it was marvelous, and hyper beam was hyped by the anime.
5th houndoom: fire blast, crunch, sunny day, solarbeam with charcoal... yes, we were able to discover that sunny day reduced the solar beam turns and that it buffed fire moves and debuffed water moves, but not the effects of pursuit xD solar beam was only for starmie.
6th houndour. it was filler from stadium 2, i dont know its moves.
i loved this team, they hated it. well, the normal gym leader loved it, because it was always a great battle between us. soon they learned NOT to start with the filler pokemon on my umbreon on 6v6 xD but it didnt matter much, because the usual was a 3v3, that was laughable. all thanks to umbreon.
And now my boy climbed all the way up to be the runner up of VGC 2019
How good was Feraligatr ACTUALLY? I've been wanting this.
EricFeraligatr27 // SSLYT yeah!😍😍😍😍😉
EricFeraligatr27 // SSLYT me too Feraligatr is my fav starter.
Feraligatr was decent and then became better when it got Sheer Force
name checks out, haha
you just got pranked gg
True. Feraligatr is my favorite Pokemon thats why its my Pfp and in my name.
How GOOD was Ampharos ACTUALLY?
Ross Freeman bad
Alright in gen 2. Good in gen 3. shafted by the physical/special split. That's basically it.
You cant ignore that lovely mega mane
Yes
Wooo! Ampharos!
How GOOD was *FLAREON* Actually?
NirthPanter *how bad
Flareon sucks. Case closed.
awful
it's pretty bad
How terrible was flareon actually?*
colosseum made me love these two Eeveelutions. theyre so badass
Umbreon: Heh, I can't be outclassed by othee Dark Types in UU
*Ghetsis Theme starts*
*_HYDREIGON HAS ENTERED THE SERVER "UNDERUSED BUT STILL GOOD"_*
I mean, that's not saying it's bad. Hydreigon is one of the most OP non-legendary pokemon, right behind Garchomp and Mega-Salamence. It;s impressive that really any dark-types can come out of it's shadow.
Finally Umbreon. Thanks for this video.
How good was everyone's favourite telekinetic egg coconut tree thing (Exeggutor) actually?
I have been asking this for weeks...
Jeroen B decent in Gen 1 but later gens... yeah 125 sp.attack is good but having 7 awful weaknesses is not very good at all, 55 base speed is awful as well, unless u have chlorophyll but that is if you survive the first hit, it can be either good or bad in sun teams in Gen 5, but powerful fire types like Infernape and Heatran can easily burn Exeggutor to crisp, it can also have loads of trouble with Weavile, Mamoswine, Cloyster, Ninetales, Heracross (scarf) Chandelure (scarf) Scolepede, Excavalier, Darmanitan, ect. The list goes on, and don't even think about gen 6, with so many powerful megas running around like Mega Charizard X and Y, Mega Pinsir and Heracross, Mega Houndoom, etc. I'm pretty sure that Exeggutor is on RU, sorry pal :(
It probably won't be covered until the USUM metagame is completely developed. I say this because s/he has an alolan form that has a typing in which the cold is hated.
Best grass type for the first couple of gens.
If exeggutor is ur favorite it doesn't mean that is everyone's favorite just saying
Good in Gen 1 and 2 and bad in later gens
How good was Vaporeon?
Nerd Dwarf Like Suicune but with anchors tied to its legs.
TheIncredibleMasterE 😂😂😂😂
I get the reference (hopefully).

Vapoureon Video exists
Gotta say, this might be your best *looking* video. Super smooth and high definition.
I'd like to see Pidgeot.
I'd love to see you do "How good was Vaporeon actually?"!
It's a superior cleric to Umbreon in almost every way. Sure, its base defenses aren't as high as Umbreon's at 60/95 for physical and special respectively, but base 130 HP lets it pass beefy Wishes. It's also got a much better defensive typing, Scald to spread burns in order to make up for its below average physical Defense, self-sustainability in Water Absorb that also predicts opposing Water moves, and a nice base 110 Special Attack to keep it from being too passive.
Seriously, Vaporeon is freaking great.
I wonder why it is (currently) NU in Gen 7.
Super Duel707 kek
Actually, run a curse set on umbreon, and it can sweep at least half of someone's team, leaving the rest of their team doomed...
Vaporeon with Rain Dance in Doubles alongside Jolteon with Thunder. Just godly. If you're playing Gen 6 or 7, you also have a Hidden Ability Sylveon in the back with Hyper Voice.
Ya know, Vaporeons pretty great at other things as well 😏
* Inhales *
Did you know in terms of male human...
How good was Ampharos Actually?
1997Mr Game and Watch ampharos is my favorite Pokemon

How good was Pinsir ACTUALLY?
How GOOD was jolteon ACTUALLY?
Please do Jolteon
A vote for Jolteon is a vote for positive thinking.
See what I did there? ;)
Ah, Umbreon. My favorite pokemon ❤
I've got a shiny Umbreon running toxic, heal bell, foul play, and moonlight, and it's just so much fun to use. I'm considering trying a wish, protect, curse, payback set in Ultra Moon now. I just relish the chance to use Umbreon
i enjoy the emerald footage '-'

How good was Dunsparce ACTUALLY?
Dunsparce no magikarp
And some dope sunglasses.
Dunsparce nice idea
Nukesoldier99 what about against Steel or Ghost types?
Dunsparce You misspelled "bad".
How good was Pinsir?
Eduardo Carreno even in gen 1 he sucked, but his mega is actually pretty decent
Eduardo Carreno Pretty bad until it got a mega.
Same as Heracross just watch that ;)
Butt Stink
What? I'm pretty sure that's way innaccurate! Heracross was so much better than Pinsir when the beetle came out, got even better in some later gens...heck, I don't even think Pinsir has ever been in the same tier as Heracross before Gen 6! I think Pinsir is much more similar to Kangaskhan than to Heracross...
Butt Stink nope. no megahorn, has never been given a decent bug stab, has a bunch of fighting moves with no stab, for the longest heracross has been an upgraded pinsir. a bug type that can actually utilize a harder hitting moveset. it wasn't until mega evolution that they distanced themselves from each other, and pinsir actually became good enough to be a sweeper.
How good was Dugtrio actually ?
I will never give up
Turki Alamri I'm with you on this one
Dugtrio was bullshit until Arena Trap was banned. All that really needs to be said
Watching your videos makes me wanna play my Emerald and Crystal version all over again now that I'm older. Your videos also make me feel so nostalgic :)
Stat wise: (If Umbreon was granted a Mega Evolution)
Typing would be Dark/Ghost
HP: 95 >>> 95 (0)
Attack: 65 >>> 65 (0)
Defense: 110 >>> 170 (+60)
Special Attack: 60 >>> 60 (0)
Special Defense: 135 >>> 175 (+40)
Speed: 65 >>> 65 (0)
Potential Abilities: Magic Guard, Magic Bounce, Oblivious, Regenerator, Shadow Tag, **Phaze Through**
Phaze Through: The pokémon will be able to bypass any barrier, such as Protect, Spiky Shield, King's Shield, Substitute, etc. with any attack.
Umbreon's problem is that it lacks the power to pressure, so wouldn't it be better to boost those? You give it an offensive ability, yet not the power to use it?
Unaware would be better
How GOOD were the Johto and Hoenn starters ACTUALLY?
Awesome J johto was shit hoenn starters were great
AppleBee Mcfirdays lol true
Awesome J shame too
there's only info to cover for feraligatr swampert and blaziken, the other 3 are garbage, sadly
I will never stop asking
How GOOD were Gligar/Gliscor ACTUALLY?
Like Weavile? lmao!
Michael Smith uhhhhhhh weavile is the shit.
I WANT THEM NEXT AS WELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah
How good was Ampharos ACTUALLY? Come on, we need this one!
i started competitive play in Gen 4 and Umbreon was one of the first mons i started using in singles. I had Calm nature with Curse, Payback, Confuse Ray, and Moonlight; full investment in Sp.Def and HP. Thing was a monster half of the time. i used it on my OU team as a bulky sweeper and it worked so well, only really being stopped by opposing Cursed t-Tar or other taunt users.
This is my favorite Pokémon for the art and back story. Thanks!
How good was Feralgatr actually? I will never give up.
creepy creeper Feraligatr is my all time favorite Pokémon by a huge margin. I second this.
creepy creeper yes do it
Temper your expectations, the gator is only okay.

How good was pinsir actually?
I can't wait till you make that video you've said about the gen 7 meta and now you must talk about how amazing umbreon did this weekend in worlds 2019!
Wow, I must commend you for making this even when it's Christmas. Props to you!
How good was Salamence!
It probably won't be done yet since it's not a Gen 1 or 2 Pokemon, but it'd be cool
He only did so because their pre-evolutions were part of Gen1 or 2.
How Good was Jolteon Actually?
Do Houndoom Please!

Who here besides me think Eevee could've evolved into Umbreon with a Moon Stone instead of the time-consuming friendship evolution?
How GOOD was Butterfree actually?

I would like to request How GOOD was Blaziken ACTUALLY. Also, Merry Christmas, man.
How HAPPY are the Holidays ACTUALLY?
We need to do Gen 2 tho.
Blaziken sucked until gen 5.It still sucks if it doesn’t have speed boost.
Byron infernape is always better
I used to troll my friends using an Umbreon with Toxic, Confuse Ray, Double Team and Moonlight. It was so unbelievably infuriating I never dared use it seriously.
shouldve
I think it would have been cool to mention the combo of curse and payback. I know other Pokémon do it better, but it catches a lot of people off guard.

History of Murkrow and Honchcrow
Wizard Bird dude murkrow does better than honchkrow
Crazy Bubble03 well it does now because it has prankster and eviolite but it didn’t always have those.
Yes!
i prefer the emerald footage to the XD footage
one thing I should point out is inner focus works perfectly with curse
it keeps a slow pokemon from repeatedly being flinched while letting it setup curses
couple that with payback, and you have a defensive pokemon that takes hits and throws hard hitting attacks back
toss on toxic for draining and rest for healing, and umbreon becomes an even more monstruous wall
I always ran a set of Curse Payback Healbell and Moonlight, it made for a great setup sweeper thanks to its bulk letting it easily take hits from most attacks even not set up as long as it wasn't super effective, once it got a few curse boosts off its attack power became good enough with the 100 BP Payback that it could beat most things, barring whirlwind/roar, but I didn't find that very common tbh. I used it in OU quite a bit. Nobody expected the sweeper Umbreon since it's normally a cleric or baton passer.
How good was Jolteon ACTUALLY!?
How good is JOLTEON actually?
Jolteon, vaporeon, flareon.
Awesome but shit in Gen 1, Awesome, Shit in every gen
Around 15 years ago, I'll always remember when I caught a female Eevee in Black 2 and it evolved into an Umbreon. It was my first Eeveelution and, since I had caught it's pre-evolution just before sleep, it seemed natural it would become an Umbreon !
BW2 was released in 2012. It could not have happened 15 years ago.
Fact check
I played around with a singles sun team during X and Y and I ran an umbreon a sort of last resort. After everything else was taken out I’d be left with umbreon who had Sunny Day, Toxic, Moonlight, and Payback with Synchronize as the ability. So whatever survived Mega Charizard Y would get cleaned up eventually. If anything didn’t get Stun Spored by Whimsicott and tried to inflict anything on Umbreon would get it too, and if not I’d just use toxic. At times it felt kinda cheap, but because it was my first attempt at a competitive team I had a lot of fun.

Alright now let’s keep her going with jolteon
I noticed that the best(?) dark type move umbreon has in gen 3 is feint attack. So difficult to take advantage of it’s typing, though I guess feint attack, hyper beam, and moonlight combined is decent. I’m only talking about the main series games, not competitively though.
How GOOD was Ghost Types actually
AMPHAROS! (cmon I’ve been asking for a month and a half)

How good was Pinsir actually

Umbreon has always been my favorite eevee. I actually use him to kill dragons in gen 5 with foul play, swagger, and moonlight / wish. Surprised a lot of people with that move set too.
How good was Yanma-Yanmega actually?
How good was Primeape?? :]
Also Merry Christmas!!
Sammy Dray Merry Christmas to you as well!
In Pokémon Uranium (a fangame), Primeape gets an evolution. Perhaps that can be covered once such meta gets analyzed by Smogon. ;)
Now, do JOLTEON
Movepool consists of Thunderbolt, Hidden Power and Volt Switch. There, here is the Jolteon analysis. Never use it when you can use Tapu Koko, Mega Manectric or Raikou and you should be good.
I'd like to see either Jolteon or Vaporeon next!
And then he got to finals in The 2019 world
Umbreon is the best and coolest looking eeveelotion. Anyone agrees? Or am I alone?
Pokemon Xbox 360 not to mention its shiny form
Glaceon is the coolest if you know what I mean.
i've got a lot of love for Umbreon!
