I can tell you from personal experience that driving on the Salt Flats at high speed is much scarier than on the Autobahn. The reason is the salt surface is loose enough to break traction in any car with sufficient power. When the car gets up to speed, very often it begins "waltzing" back and forth on the loose surface. You have to be mindful of making small corrections and the whiteness of the surface doesn't give you much contrast to see little ruts. Even when the track has been recently scraped, it is not pavement smooth. If you start to "lose" it, it is hard to get the car back in line because once the tires start sliding sideways, the salt piles up on one side of the tires, creating a hump they have to go over in order to straighten out. A slide can easily become a rollover as the tires will start to dig in. Most cars cannot get up to the same speed on the salt as they can on pavement because of less traction and yes, I have driven on the Autobahn at about 150 mph in the 1960's. At the Salt Flats, I ran a 1968 Dodge Charger RT hemi in 1970 @ 142 mph, top speed was limited by wheelspin, no rear wing (would have helped). It felt weird having to feather the throttle at 140+!
Well put. Driving on the salt is not like an everyday drive in any respect. And it is definitely weird how the lack of color contrast kind of messes with your orientation, even if you're just going in a straight line.
Arthur White Yes, good keeping in mind that if anything had happened, he'd be a good walk away from help, if he could walk afterward! Depending on where he entered the flats, he could be quite a distance from help.
True.. when I was out there a couple of months ago, the conditions were perfect and no one was there early in the AM. I had some support with me and I was able to get 3 back to back 150+ runs in within a couple of miles of the entrance point.... video/GPS/etc.. could not have asked for a more perfect day.
Don't scoff unless you've done it. If the vibrations in his wheels had locked onto a resonant frequency and caused him to lose control, he could lay out there for days until he died of thirst. His dessicated beef-jerky body would be found months later when the next Speed Rally was doing their pre event grooming. I might have pussied out at 144 mph, too.
Everyone thinks the Salt Flats is easy to drive on. It isn’t. But the statement that you can’t see ahead of you at 145 is just hogwash lol. It may seem that way but not true. In 2016 Dave Davidson of Vintage Hot Rod drove his blown fuel hi boy roadster around a small piece of steel at over 250 mph and was able to tell us exactly where it was within 50 feet ... there’s actually video of it on UA-cam, not too hard to Google it. I worked out there from 2010 through 2018 as a roving patrol on course 1. But it’s tricky enough to drive on when conditions are good. He was smart to get out of it because once the front tires lift from the ‘slop’ it’s all over and would have spun if he was lucky. If he wasn’t lucky he could have wadded it up in a ball. Discretion is the better part of valor.

Middle of no where ? Not true I’ve been to the salt flats in Utah a fair amount in my life. There between Eagle mountain, Utah and Wendover, Utah. And if you have Verizon you’ll have full coverage the entire time. There’s also a lot of people that shoot rabbits by the salt flats below the mountains.
It’s really not the middle of no where, however the salt does create a mirror effect and will duplicate mountains and you’ll drive to them they will disappear that’s why meany people get lost it’s also kind of creepy when that happens. You can also find a ton of arrow heads left over from the native Americans that use to hunt around the salt flats called the Utes which is why Utah is called Utah that means people of the mountains in Ute.
You’re also able to see the old Air Force training Center in wendover,Utah where they trained the pilots that dropped the nuclear bomb over japan in WW2. There’s also caves out there that have native Indians remains in them, and there’s skin walker ranch in that area will just look up Skin walker ranch it’s rather creepy as well don’t get lost and have fun if you go there!
I don't understand what you were freaking out over. I've driven 140mph on the Florida turnpike. There's nothing around you for dozens of miles, why not just keep your foot down until you hit 170 or so? What are you worried about, accidentally going back in time or something?
If you have never walked on that surface, hear the sounds that are made on the salt flats in a car at speed, or been going that speed into the wide open with no lines or or anything to aid in giving you perspective you won't understand. I have done 150mph on a freeway and 130mph(rental car) on the flats, one is nothing like the other. If you ever get the opportunity do it only way I can describe is like being on another planet.
That's funny because the most I've gone on the Florida turnpike was around 160mph when I was back in highschool, but then again I was younger and more reckless
Sure, I agree there is nothing to hit. There are sone questions to ask about suspension. If a car is going that fast hits a deep groove then what is going to happen to the car? Loose control and flip. This is why he is nervous.....not being a pussy.....being careful.
it gets all over everything and in everything. Have you ever been to the beach and you find sand in all your cracks and crevasses? That is like that for your car... which is made of medal... which doesn't go well with salt.
I love seeing how geniuely happy you look here, despite not beating the goal you set. I'd also like to you drive some other cars here some time in the future.
Karter and Bartinater they then OFFICIALLY changed it back to aluminum. However, many European people still call it aluminium, as it sounds nicer, and as an American I agree. The thing is when you called it aluminium here people thing your a smart ass.
Million dollar idea... Take a couple of water tank trucks out there. Hook up a couple of 2 gpm hoses, Set them up a by the edge of the flats by the exit, and charge $20 for 5 minutes of water to clean your car off. You could get fancy, and get some 1 inch perforated hoses so cars could drive over them, and clean the underbelly.
When I got stuck on the flats it took over 45 min with high pressure spray point blank to get the mud off (it dries like concrete). The salt comes off easier but still tough. There's a car wash close by on the NV side FYI. :D
As someone who grew up with the Autobahn it amuses me when people in the states get scared by high speeds. Regardless, the landscape is incredibly impressive and I am sure Doug must have had a lot of fun.
I live in Utah. If you’re ever lost, simply head EAST - towards the East Wasatch mountains! I’m definitely checking out this place this weekend. Let’s see how fast my daily driver - C240 4Matic - goes. I might post the video on my UA-cam channel. Thanks Doug for showcasing my home state. Check out my other AMG videos.
The salt flats aren’t that large. I mean yea if your stranded with no vehicle your pretty much toast but if you drive in a straight line away from the large mountains you’ll eventually hit route 80.
Unless you get stuck in a spring, or can't see the mountains because of crappy weather. I believe near Wendover it is about 12 miles at it's widest, but when you get out there it looks like 1 mile. You would be advised to pack a magnetic compass if you go past losing site of the roadway.
But the angle you drive in towards 80 could take you longer or shorter and closer to route 80 the terrain becomes less and less navigable (ie: rougher).
Last time I drove from Salt Lake City to Sacramento, many years ago but I had done it many times before, I got bored going down that 100 mile stretch of interstate. So... I did what I wanted to many times before. I left the cruise on and just drove off the highway onto the salt flats. Basically just let go of the wheel, and let the car run right off the road. I turned up the radio, stuck my hands behind my head and just relaxed for a while. A couple of miles out, I nudged the wheel a bit with my knee, because I was getting pretty far away from I-80. About ten miles down the salt, 3 songs later on the radio, I was getting a bit drowsy. Decided not to fall asleep while in cruise, so I sat up and sped up to about 110. A few miles later, I veered a bit to the left again (with my knee) - which brought me back to the highway about ten minutes later. I looked for any traffic before getting back on the road, but... PFFFT! When you're on I-80 west of SLC, there's no traffic. It's just an empty expanse of desolation. I did slow back down to about 80 before I pulled back onto the interstate... but nobody was there to notice either way. :P
Oh, and when Doug said "you can't just drive on it at interstate speed", he wasn't completely correct. It really depends on the season and the condition of the salt pan. They have a rainy season, then there's a "drying" season, and late into the drying season the winds have already flattened most of the imperfections out of the surface so it's fairly smooth. I didn't know that at the time, so I suppose I was just lucky. This is stuff that I learned years later, after I had already driven off the highway and cruised hands-free for a while on the salt pan. If I had been there at the wrong time of year, I'm sure it would have gone badly, since I was driving a little Chevy Chevette that I had rebuilt. (Tinted windows, sunroof, aluminum mags, rebuilt engine... black interior with a pumpkin orange paint job... I liked that little car.) As it was... I just drove around for a while and didn't think anything of it. (About 1990, I think.) A decade later I had been on this "internet" thing for a few years, and one night I read about the "seasons" of the salt pans. I suddenly realized that I must have been there at just the right time, even though it WAS ever so slightly bumpy. Life is just like that sometimes, I suppose. _shrug_ (Also, I was in Utah. So I bet it was probably illegal. :D )
I drove my 4th gen camaro from Colorado to California last summer and I think I went faster on the interstate next to the salt flats than Doug did on them ;)
how about 2? :) this winnipegger had the good fortune to go there with a friend in his Audi S5, managed 153mph insane and scary because speed week was already over so we just went for it without any marked track, but then again it was still smoother than a winnipeg road even at those speeds HAHA

I stopped there on my way back to WV from Sacramento, CA, having flown out, bought a truck, and was driving it home. Excellent trip. Anyway, I was definitely not going to be able to not stop and check out Bonneville if I was going to drive right past it. Imagine my chagrin to find it all under a few inches of water... Still a cool experience, and the flats underwater is even more surreal than it usually is, like an endless mirror stretching all the way to the horizon. Pretty crazy.
trust me, I watched the video many times. when Jeremy pumped up his tires to 50psi, he got up to 169mph, when Hammond let the air out he only got to 139mph
You will get initial acceleration from grip, but since the contact patch is increased you will have more friction making you go slower overall on a straight line.
I am the proud holder of my own Bonneville speed record. In 1970 I took my 1968 289 c.i., 3-speed manual, meadowlark yellow (yes, that's actually what Ford called it) hardtop Mustang hauling a fully loaded enclosed U-Haul trailer (with everything I owned at the time, because I was moving from Colorado Springs to Lake Tahoe) onto the salt, and buried the throttle. If memory serves me correctly, I hit almost 69 mph. Of course that was with the aid of a poorly installed set of Hooker headers and two really badass black hood stripes. I'm pretty sure that to this day no one else has ever challenged that record. Which is probably a good thing because it turns out that pulling that heavy a load behind a fairly light car is not exactly a safe thing to do, especially through the mountains. Ah, to be 20 again!
Wow....I had the same idea back in '91 on a road trip after my discharge from the Air Force in California and drove cross country to Virginia with my brand new Hyundai Excel.... Got up to 110 before I realized if I crashed out there alone, and way before cell phones.... I'm sure you can fill in the blanks.... It was fun though!!! I felt just like you did Dave...
Still more Safe than eastern europena autobahn
Was out there yesterday...The salt was just about perfect... and no wind. BUT, 150+ is still something that you need to take seriously.
Bruh I felt like I was watching an Apollo 13 movie when he was accelerating

If the vibrations in his wheels had locked onto a resonant frequency and caused him to lose control, he could lay out there for days until he died of thirst. His dessicated beef-jerky body would be found months later when the next Speed Rally was doing their pre event grooming.
I might have pussied out at 144 mph, too.
Finally an intellectual
@mark bender you can clearly see there is only one person with him.
Fin Jan I went 181 on a 2003 Yamaha YZF-R1. Being a car reviewer and wussing out at 145 in a car is pathetic.
@@DPRX99 every asshole thinks driving on the salt flats is easy.
IT AIN'T.
You wouldn't know shit from Shinola if you were buffing the floor son - just go check in with some of my 'chump pals' over at Jalopnik like Dan W, head of impound at Speedweek or some of the other fools who have set records at BONNEVILLE
I've spent the 3rd week of August (~September) watching my dad, then racing, then working at BONNEVILLE for almost 50 years -
Here's the thing son, wide street tires generate their own lift on surface moisture starting around 140 for an improperly equipped street car, while wings don't typically start working until about 180.
In my MANY YEARS working as a course steward, most cars spin around 150 and up and typically on the wettest part of the course (about the 1-1/4 Mile mark where the underground stream crosses the course).
So don't talk shit son, post a better video, or better yet come to Speedweek and show us how to go fast
You forgot to mention the distance you are to the closest Aston Martin dealer in case something were to happen and you needed to use your unlimited mileage, bumper to bumper warranty.

I don't think insurance would cover totaling the Aston on Bonneville
There's nothing to hit, how are you gonna total it?
That's funny because the most I've gone on the Florida turnpike was around 160mph when I was back in highschool, but then again I was younger and more reckless
Sure, I agree there is nothing to hit. There are sone questions to ask about suspension. If a car is going that fast hits a deep groove then what is going to happen to the car? Loose control and flip. This is why he is nervous.....not being a pussy.....being careful.
That can't be too good for the under carriage.
most likely covered by plastic, not a problem.
it gets all over everything and in everything. Have you ever been to the beach and you find sand in all your cracks and crevasses? That is like that for your car... which is made of medal... which doesn't go well with salt.
*metal
Moldygreenbean ever tried sex on the beach that will surely ruin your undercarriage lol 😂
Wait the land speed record is 600mph ?!?!? That's a mile in 6 seconds 😫
land speed record is over the sound barrier. heard of thrust ssc? the official land speed record is 763.035 mph
Actually, 600 mph is more than that. Maybe 9 mp/s.

aluminum* you fucking idiot
Gareth Technically the spelling aluminum came before aluminium
Karter Of course it didn't, it's the English language. Aluminium was discovered by a danish guy who named in aluminium not aluminum.
Karter and Bartinater they then OFFICIALLY changed it back to aluminum. However, many European people still call it aluminium, as it sounds nicer, and as an American I agree. The thing is when you called it aluminium here people thing your a smart ass.
Meh I thought you were going to do some serious speed
Million dollar idea...
Take a couple of water tank trucks out there.
Hook up a couple of 2 gpm hoses,
Set them up a by the edge of the flats by the exit, and charge $20 for 5 minutes of water to clean your car off.
You could get fancy, and get some 1 inch perforated hoses so cars could drive over them, and clean the underbelly.
It is crazy that there isn't a good "do it yourself" car wash close by,... I had drive to Toole yesterday to get to the first one.
When I got stuck on the flats it took over 45 min with high pressure spray point blank to get the mud off (it dries like concrete). The salt comes off easier but still tough. There's a car wash close by on the NV side FYI. :D
Except there's only a few souls out there, and even events get cancelled on the regular.
Legends say that he‘s still saying:,, and over there nothing.“

5:04 jees your hand
He's so scared that he shit on his pants xD
Seriously, only guy to turn the salt flats into Dorkville. And he wasn't embarrassed to post this video, unbelievable.
Doug the type of guy to watch a whole movie just for one part
I liked that little car.)
As it was... _shrug_
(Also, I was in Utah. So I bet it was probably illegal. :D )
I drove my 4th gen camaro from Colorado to California last summer and I think I went faster on the interstate next to the salt flats than Doug did on them ;)
You just showed us 6 dimensions of nothing 🤦🏻♂️

how about 2? :) this winnipegger had the good fortune to go there with a friend in his Audi S5, managed 153mph insane and scary because speed week was already over so we just went for it without any marked track, but then again it was still smoother than a winnipeg road even at those speeds HAHA
goober ankle-schmidt pretty much lol
Salt and some of the worst roads in the world... or so it seems. Seriously, pot hole nation! And that's why there's so few sports cars in Winnipeg.
Mark Sophucked it's pretty flat because earth is flat...
Here in Germany, you don't have to worry about salt on the Autobahn. You are allowed to drive as fast as you can (most of the time).

Holy Toledo There is nothing funny tho, it’s completely flat
I stopped there on my way back to WV from Sacramento, CA, having flown out, bought a truck, and was driving it home. Excellent trip. Anyway, I was definitely not going to be able to not stop and check out Bonneville if I was going to drive right past it. Imagine my chagrin to find it all under a few inches of water... Still a cool experience, and the flats underwater is even more surreal than it usually is, like an endless mirror stretching all the way to the horizon. Pretty crazy.
Do you have a video of you washing the aston? I want to see it.
Doug, let some air out the tires next time, you'll get better grip.
last time Hammond did that, he got slower
That was when he inflated the tires. Jeremy and James had their best runs with less pressure
improves grip but reduces top speed. needs to put more air in them.
trust me, I watched the video many times. when Jeremy pumped up his tires to 50psi, he got up to 169mph, when Hammond let the air out he only got to 139mph
You will get initial acceleration from grip, but since the contact patch is increased you will have more friction making you go slower overall on a straight line.
Do you have a warranty on this car?
BUMPER TO BUMBER WARRANTY!
Yeah, bumper to bumper.
Not only is it bumper-to-bumper, but it also has UNLIMITED MILEAGE
UNLIMITED MILAGE BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY!
The bumper to bumper warranty runs out at 125,000 miles. He bought the car with ~60,000 miles on it already.
