Here is some advice to all of you living where there are bears from someone who has for the last seven decades: many years ago I lived in a very remote area. It was so remote garbage pick up was only every other week. No matted how I tried to store the garbage, bears would either get to it or cause damage try to get to it. I was at my wits end when one day, as I went to throw away a hot dog package, I had a eureka moment, why not wash the package/can/wrapper that had food in it bears wanted to eat BEFORE I throw it out! After that, NOT ONE INCIDENT, EVER!!!!
So, please take the little extra time to use soap and hot water to clean your containers and compost any food scraps to save yourself and the bears a lot of trouble. Compost vegetables but if you have meat scrapes or meat that has gone bad and you want to dispose of it, seal it in a plastic bag and freeze it until just before you put it in the garbage right before pick up. PS Bonus:The garbage did not stink after that!

@@Readysetgo2007 No, I was so grateful, the bears taught me how to be more hygienic, no flies, no stink. I lived in a town for a while and kept doing the same because it was just better. Composting was a little harder, but once I figured out how to it became routine and not a problem. Also, in my compost heap, I never had a bear rooting around it. Only a skunk every now and then.

In this case the media claims the dog was on leash but 50% of all Bear attacks involve unleashed dogs and in 90% of these cases it is a "Dog attack" not a "Bear attack". I have been photographing bears for 15 years now and up until two years ago had my dog with me on 2 leashes. I never once had a bear with or without cubs act aggressively toward me. Unfortunately, once a bear goes after a human they are not considered a candidate for relocation as they go from being a "nuisance bear" to a threat to human life as they have learned humans are a potential food source and will teach other bears. This is commonly seen in the fact that only some area have difficulty with bears breaking into cars looking for food. In most cases a female bear did it and got food generations ago and taught their cubs who taught there cubs. In these areas bears still have the skills to break into cars and the knowledge that they may contain food despite locals not leaving food in their cars in years.
