I'm in East TN and had an encounterwith a black bear with two cubs in my backyard a couple nights ago. I almost walked right up on them in a dimly lit area in a tree without knowing until I heard the mother make that gutteral warning which scared the crappola out of me. I was probably about 20 feet away from it and backed off but couldn't leave because they were within 15 feet of my dog lot and I was afraid the mother would attack my dog (the one in my avatar) that was barking. I ended up firing off a 9mm round in it's direction and the sound apparently caused it to drop out of the tree and move away, calling it's cubs to also descend to the ground and follow it out of my yard. One of the scariest experiences of my life.
@@rtc2112 I'm near Johnson city but there have been sightings all over this area. Someone had mentioned there's an issue with berries/food sources not being as readily available as most years which is driving the bears towards more populated areas looking for food.
The other reason you fight a black bear and play dead with a grizzly is because black bears are not normally aggressive so if you get attacked by one it probably intends to kill and eat you. A grizzly on the other hand is more aggressive and may just attack you because it feels threatened but is not intending to eat you. If a grizzly thinks it's killed you or messed you up enough he may stop attacking and leave.
I believe the last fatal attack in Az was in 2011, not in the 1980s. Also, while rare, as they are usually timid, predatory black bear attacks are well documented. Few if any were because the bear was sick or old, etc. It is usually young males that are either habituated or unfamiliar with people (as in Alaska). A truly terrifying fate.
