One of the main things what i like about Picard season 3 is it has also brought back ship porn. I have no idea what S1 and S2 people were doing but give makers of S3 a raise.
Edit: USS Hornet would have been Spot on!
In my opinion I feel Starfleet lost a considerable amount of materials and energy when the synths destroyed Utopia Planitia. They seem to be repurposing older components. I like the designs and they make sense.
Thanks for the video.
Yeah my guess is we will see the three nacelle enterprise D from "All good things". The computer showed us the saucer was salvaged and they have been talking about the Enterprise D a lot this season.
I think Bill Krause's Toronado-class was the actual inspiration.
@@zoberraz Yaaaasssss! Granted the Toronado is basically a variant of the Wasp and is it nearly as well known as the Wasp class, but the Toronado was designed with the underslung deflector/long range sensor/communications array, not the torpedo module.
The underslung secondary hull reminds me of the weapon in TNG season 1 episode Arsenal of Freedom.
Like it though. Nice design.
beautiful design! when she arms her defences, and rises up with red light glowing, she reminded me of how menacing the uss reliant looked with those red lights.
I know man that scene with the virtual camera behind the Titan and showing the Intrepid going down but then rising back up and powering up I've not felt tension like this since watching the daleks for the first time I actually felt the need to hide as the Intrepid came back with vergence and you could see and feel that so so much so that and the music so so awesome.
Beautiful lol. No it not it is an Ugly design just like the Titan here is an ugly design.
@@sharonec5419 opinions vary
“It’s wonderfully simple, and yet radical.” My thoughts exactly. I think she’s a very cool addition to the fleet 👍
After the JJVerse and Disco ships.. finally.. Starships that make sense. Awesomeness!
Well Hoover Class looked almost like this ship.
How does the Titan make sense other than Starfleet going for a retro look or making use of spare ship parts laying around cause Mars ship yard is destroyed? And the star drive section of the Intrepid looks ugh.
the bridges are enormous an very disco. PIcard, strange new worlds and discovery all have the jj\kurtzman issues
@@cruman87 The thing about the Titan-A that gets to me is that the retro design thinks of retro as 30-40 years ago, when in-universe they're aiming for 130 years ago. So it's like designing today's battleships to look like US Civil War screw sloops, with sails and all.
Riker's Titan from the novels/Lower Decks would have been much more preferable (or even the same basic outline of the ship but with different nacelles/upgrades).
@@Cyke101 Yeah I like that analogy.
As far as the Titan, I'd rather they just call the ship something else instead coming up with some weird backstory that it is Rikers "Titan" but it's not. Its a refit but its not really. IDK
I would LOVE LOVE LOVE a model of this. At a good scale and at a reasonable price.
Man do I really like this design. Always liked Bill’s designs and this update is gorgeous. I really want a model of it!
This ship is getting a lot of rave reviews so I think they will 😊 would be silly not to if it's popular. I havn't done a airfox model in 30 years.
Honestly, I think this is the sexiest Star Fleet design I've ever seen. Definitely the best looking ship drop since the Akira, and it replaces my previous favorite which was the Sternbach Voyager Concept.
This is what I have expected from Discovery. New, pushing boundaries but familiar. Not floating nacelles and speghetti thrown at the wall designs
Why would it be remotely familiar after hundreds and hundreds of years?
Now this is a ship design I can get behind! Absolutely love the new USS Intrepid and wish this was the 'hero' ship of the season instead of the Titan-A. It's a great looking ship from all directions. Refreshing and new take on a Federation vessel. Still not crazy about the clunky nacelles, but hey, can't complain when the rest of the ship is spot on. So, can we say the Intrepid has _two_ secondary hulls? One aft of the saucer and the other below the neck?
I still like the Titan-A design over this, the traditional constitution profile is amazing, that said, the Intrepid is still awesome looking.
The Titan-A is not a bad looking ship. I only find certain aspects of its design a little awkward The wide profile of the neck and truncated aft of the saucer section seems a little odd. If the neck wasn't as wide or if the saucer wasn't cut off it would probably be a more balanced design. These two design features in combination emphasize the other if you follow what I mean. This isn't a critique on the Constitution class which is a classic and love myself, but the Titan-A is a very different ship despite its class name.
This is a MUCH better update of a TMP Krause design than Titan-A is. Makes me think Matalas demanded the TMP saucer on Titan was left alone, since they changed every other detail of that design and literally every detail of this one.
It was weird at first, but I like it. Kinda brings to mind those weapon drones from the first season of TNG when they were on that planet that was a big weapons emporium. "Arsenal of Freedom".
Now that Trekyards mentions it the ship DOES look similar to the NX-01 refit. I still don’t like the codpiece secondary hull, but this definitely gives me faith of the heart
Didn't realize that this ship was based off of one from FASA. Nice to see that. Not sure I like the new warp nacelle designs for this ship or the Neo Connie classes though.
I find these ships ape the refit era a bit too much but I really do like these designs. I am hoping they show up in Star Trek Online.
"Refit Era", it would TOTALLY thus make sense if Geordi off screen is finishing up the Ent-D Galaxy-X refit so she can help her crew one last time. The final character we need to see! (Though, I could be ok without the 3rd nacelle, refit changes and the megaphaser-cannon will be more than enough.
That saucer edge could slice a DS9 sized pizza. Not a huge fan of the sharp saucer edges on some of the new ships. But overall I love the ship.
Looks like an updated pioneer class.
This could have been the "Hero Ship"
Im still not sure about this "retro" look of this season...it's basically the refit era. Is there any expalnation as to why Starfleet went back to such ancient designs?
It’s been mentioned outside of canon that after the destruction of the shipyards around Mars that they’re salvaging parts of old ships. Maybe the design fits the parts that they’ve salvaged. Warp fields tailored to a particular geometry perhaps?
@@1garysan makes sense..thanks!
Look at the size of them nacelles..... ooooooooooer beautiful 😍
It reminds me of the ambassador class concept painting from the front. It's nice to see some good ship design.
Another starship cut off in its prime.
Enterprise-E and -F, gone after 30 years.
USS Titan, gone after 30 years.
USS intrepid, gone after 30 years.
The intrepid feels reminiscent of Bill’s Tornado Class interceptor side profile concept, notably the secondary hull configuration. Thanks for all that you do!
The tornado class is very similar, especially in the curve of the neck to the secondary hull. I'd say they used ideas from both the Hornet and the Tornado to put this together.
I don’t want to nitpick, but it’s called the Toronado class not Tornado
It’s not only reminiscent but I directly modified the Toronado (then Chaparral) class when creating this new 25th century version.
It is nice seeing old fan designs getting new life in canon, on screen, with updates to fit in the timeline properly
You guys put a lot of thought into your ship analysis and personally, I'd find it helpful if you would start to draw attention to the specific detail you're ever referring to. For example when you say something like "here you can see the phaser emitters" you could circle what you're referring to.
Not a complaint, I rather enjoy these videos but I'd get more from them if you gave focus to these details.
I wanna say the ball turrets on the Titan could be for low yield/rapid fire pulse phasers to deal with smaller craft and overwhelming enemy shields, the strips could be for higher yield/sustained fire phaser beams for larger targets and for when phasers are used in utility purposes such as debris clearing or (insert any time TNG Enterprise used its phasers for a non-combat purpose).
Not a fan, personally. The secondary hull looks silly to me. I’m glad you guys are digging it though.
When do you think we’ll be seeing some legacy ships? I miss the Hood.
Between DS9 and Mars burning, Starfleet has turn to dumpster stock to start refitting the fleet. Is the kinda vibe I get with Star Trek Picard.
The ongoing game of who inspired whom. USS Hornet blueprints. Designed by Lawrence Miller. I own a hard copy of that set (I should find that box of goodies...). I bought those in the 80's. I see evidence they have been reprinted a few times since in the current century. As they should be. 😉It had small fighters docked in similar fashion as a Travel Pod does in TMP. The orthographic image of the Wasp Class in the vid has a familiar FASA Federation Starship Recognition Manual graphic border. It wasn't published as part of the original combat simulator game. IMO, a passionate fan of the Hornet just renamed it the Wasp to adapt it. IMO, Krause's Toronado *may have been* inspired by both the Hornet and the Wasp. With original modifications. Authors of the written word are inspired similarly all the time. And now we have the Duderstadt-class. A nice lineage and I like it.
I understand they need the warp nacelles to still be that large and elongated for a more contrasting dramatic effect but, it just keeps bringing me back to what Capt. Janeway said about USS Voyager being 'the fastest ship in the quadrant' in the very first episode, given how tiny the size and shape of those nacelles on Voyager in proportion to the rest of the ship.
Being a massive TNG fan I was so excited for this but then after watching 2 seasons but there are so many issues with the series this isn't a star trek series this is just a series with a lot of special effects and dumb writers there is no thought for the cannon of previous films and ST episodes it's just ST discovery on a much bigger scale,
Is it just me, but why do the bridge module(s) seem off-scale?
OMGOSH - The Intrepid and Titan are so much less imaginative than Picard’s flagship in “Nemesis” - What happened to the Federation to make Starship designs so inferior to Janeway’s Voyager and the Enterprise F ❓
DIS S1 Hoover class had a similar forward dropped secondary hull
Still think those nacelles would look better the other way up, with more of a link to sovereign than TMP
I'm starting to think all of Bill Krause's ships will be in Picard.
This design as a militarised starfleet ship is perfect. This is clearly part of the starfleets' "patrol" arm lol. I actually like the turrets and arrays in combination. If those turrets were, say, defiant class cannons? That ship is now deadly as fuck at both medium and short range.
I would love to see this ship in Star Trek Online as a T6 variant of the utility cruiser, with the TOS era Pioneer class appearance available, to finally have a version of the utility cruiser design that isn’t relegated to only being used in the tutorial stage.
They are giving us a lot of good ships. I would have dismissed everything after Disco Series one if it weren’t for you guys.
I actually mistook the Intrepid for another of the same class as the Titan-A until I got a good look at it.
7:44 DEEP CUT! The circles indicating the shield perimeter are (i bet) a direct reference to the low tech shield display from TWOK! :D
EDIT: Of course you got it too LOL
I noticed that as well.
This seems like a weaker starfleet era
Reminds me of the STO Pioneer class as well.
the naceles are still a random mess of shapes that doesnt work at all
The scale is really an issue this season even though I love the ships. The shot of the Titian breaking the tractor beam looks bloody ridiculous if you actually look at the ships. Titan windows are like 10 meters tall. lol
I kind of prefer the Wasp look, but they are both great.
anyone think the intrepid would have fit a neo constitution theme far better than a Shangri-la class refit?
So happy S3 has gone back to more matt tones on the hull plating. The ships in S2 (and Ent-D in S1) were way too shiny 😊
Bill has responded to a lot of questions about the ship on his instagram post, pretty cool!
I don't get how Trekyards is so off on the scale of these ships. They are about the size of the re-fit Connie. The shuttle bay on that held two shuttles. When Ro leaves the Titan on her shuttle it did a close flyby of the Titan bridge and was about the same size. Compare to the main shuttle bay on the Galaxy class which was MASSIVE. So massive we never saw it from the inside on the show as they didn't have a set remotely large enough, so it was always shuttle bay 2 or 3.
The Titan A and Intrepid are not "high end ships" as Cockings put it. They would have been back in The Motion Picture era but Star Trek is well passed that. The Odyssey class Enterprise F, when it shows up should absolutely dwarf the Titan A.
The Titan-A is 540m, the Enterprises Refit is 305m so its signifantly larger :)
High end meaning almost brand new, both being built as part of these next generation ships in the last 5-10 years, versus the First contact era of ships of 20-30 years...TNG of 30-50 years or the older TMP era and such from 100 ish.
Per the designer the Titan A is 560.5m and the Intrepid 578.5m. These are new ships.
@@brianstewart8936 The Titan A isn't new by the show's own dialogue. They call it a new Re-fit which in Star Trek usually means an upgrade of an older ship like the re-fit Enterprise. The design of the Titan A is based off the Shangri-La class which was a contemporary of the re-fit Constitution class and was of a similar size.
I doubt their claimed 560m length based on the scale of Crusher's ship compared to the shuttle when it docked and their sizes compared to the Titan.
Not to mention a ship's length doesn't equate to overall size/mass. The Enteprise E was bit longer than the D but the Enterprise D had almost double the mass of the E because the saucer especially and even the secondary hull were larger. The E had the oval saucer mounted lengthwise and it had much longer nacelles.
Hell, 3/4 of Discovery's length is it's nacelles.
But like I said, the ships in the show don't look big (unless every type 9 shuttle is the size of a Runabout now).
Wouldn't be the first show to play fast and loose with ship scales, just watch Babylon 5, though that was the 90's. You'd think they'd be better at it now.
@@brentbartley6838 it’s a refit of the Luna Class Titan. Yes its design is a callback to the Shangri-la design but it is not a repurposed Shangri-la class starship. And yes the windows are too big, from my understanding, but I think that’s something that we, the ship fans, have to acknowledge and then move on from.
@@paulhitchcock2543 There is no way it is a re-fit of the Luna class. The hulls are so different it would be easier to just build a completely new ship. Some speculate that it is a re-fit Shangri-La using parts from the Luna class Titan but if that's true it's got to be all internal parts like the main computer or warp core maybe, at least for the largest parts. Maybe smaller bits like eps conduits, bio-neural gel packs and such. And the Luna class is canon, Lower Decks is canon and the Luna class Titan appeared in that.
Rather than separating the saucer section in the event of a warp core breach, could the core and antimatter storage be housed in the bottom protuberence and that gets ejected? Much easier to replace than half the ship.
Definitely going pick a model up for this!
is ok. The whole Ship follows JJs everything needs to be bigger and shinier to take viewer attention away from the story.
If Jack crusher didn't grow up with dad why does he have a British accent? Anyone?
Patrick Stewart looks so lost in these scenes.
we spend way too much time watching actors give each other looks.
They explained his accent; he went to school in London and never lost the accent. It’s not that far fetched, especially if he was there for 5 to 10 years as a child/student. It may not be a perfect explanation but they did hang a lampshade on it.
Interesting design. And it looks so mean after it came back up to shoot the Titan.
U.S,S. Murder Hornet
Missed chance.
I.M.O….Upscale the overalll size of the ship and modify the secondary hull to a more “traditional” design and this would’ve made a beautiful Enterprise G.
I like the new Intrepid, however I’m not so sure she needed to be called Intrepid given the Intrepid other than the name sounding cool and the likelihood the NCC-74600 was either destroyed, lost, or retired/decommissioned. Now remembering back to the NCC-1631 with its all Vulcan crew, this ship could have been called USS Spock or USS T’Pol. Another nod to past Trek could have been USS Tasha Yar. But I digress the Intrepid is nice.
Have they turned the clock back on Trek ship designs in Picard? Up until Voyager/FC/Nemesis, Starfleet ships were getting more modern and sleeker looking by the series. The Intrepid and Titan-A look very retro.
I like this ship👍🏾
The front profile of the ship reminds me of the NX01 refit concept, definitely.
It does look very post-Sovereign but still a continuation.
Oh god yes please I have not make an airfix model kit for over 30 years I'm still trying to get a 90's airfix model kit of the Enterprise D I built but lost. Thank you for the video 😊
I want to see the Enterprise F.
What gives you the idea these ships are upscaled?
The Windows and Bridges are perfectly in line and those are obviously TOS/TMP era sized Ships.
I got no problem with it if these aren't Galaxy/Sovereign sized ships.
If we ever see either next to the Enterprise-F and it doesn't totally dwarf them, then i'm gonna raise an eyebrow.
I like the ship but I just don't like the neck placement. I do appreciate a unique design. I still personally like the sleeker ships like the E or Voyager but I love how these are actual trek ships!
I didn't think this would happen but when I heard it was the USS Intrepid, a small part of me was hoping to see the Voyager style class namesake.
i got the sto duderstradi class science spearhead and it whould kick the titan-1 ass with its ten torpedos lunchers eight foreward facing and two aft facing with dual phaser beam banks, phaser strips with in game cannons and turrets it say it 587 m long as well and ingame u can lunch a energy lifeforms to attack enemy ships its fast ship as well for my sci capt.
I have mixed feelings. One one hand, the ship does look cool. But the design seems very impractical to me. These ships are extremely expensive, and when they are constructed, one would expect that faction is more important than design. You also want to minimize the surface, because that's where a ship is most vulnerable. There are good reasons why the nacells are separated from the main hull, but I don't see a reason why the secondary hull needs to be this separated. But it looks cool,
She looks mean and then she looks really pissed.
Its a Ron Jeremy class ship, that would have been a good command for Riker.
would’ve appreciated a cylindrical engineering section, perhaps.
I think this is a great ship if I were doing Star Trek online and this ship came about it absolutely would be one of the choices I would take.
And the ad is also a lot you can do with that particular design.
I absolutely love this ship. It's a very unique design and I was so excited to see a live action version of the Wasp class. My first thought was 'can't wait for this to come to STO so I can fly it'
I thought that the intrepid was the shrike projecting hollo image of a federation starship over its self, the secondary hull deflector dish looks like the shrikes, also thought that Roe was Vidik.
Both the Stinger and the new Intrepid look a bit like my own kitbashed TOS era Pathfinder class, with the nacelles attached to an extended raised section at the back top of the saucer and longer neck with a defector pod on the end and sensor pallets with antenna on the necks sides. So I'm biased to liking the design.
the issue with the deflector is obviously around because that dish was never meant to be a deflector in the first place but everyone glommed onto calling it that because of the error ridden ST technical manual.
I Hate the new nacelle design they are putting on everything its out of place and just sucks. I think it ruins the Neo Constitution look its just out of place.
I like it. In some angles looks like classic starship. Change angle and different
Hi, I'm from Ireland and was recently in New York for a few days with my wife and we were on the original real aircraft carriage US Intrepid.
wonder does anyone see this like the ship is inspired by a hornet/wasp. The bottom fuselage is the hornet's bottom body. The nacelle placement wing spans out like the wing of a hornet
The nacelles yes can be the same design but don't always have to be same scale Starfleet can easily make the same style model Warp nacelles in different scale sizes and it would keep uniformity
I wish the class would be called "Avispa" which is the Spanish word for "wasp."
I was wishing the Enterprise (whatever letter) would show up. The Titans and Interpid are nice but are no Enterprise.
The secondary Hull looks like a zat gun from Stargate SG1
My only complaint is that the ships are, once again, lightly armed. So it seems, at least. When will Starfleet learn? 😔
It also kind of reminds me of the Star Trek online 2260s Pioneer class
Im sure theres a another version of this ship in startrek legacy called the ajax i think but the lower pod is a phaser i think. Either way this and the iterations of it are pretty cool designs
You are right! In game it is called the "Akula Class".
Awesome ship! Would love to see a model of it, and it reminded me of the pioneer, wasp and the andor engineering hull, nice vid!
What's the point of a rear navigational deflector? I like the Wasp more.
Did you comment on the fact that when weapons were armed, we saw red lights on each ends of the upper phaser array/strips? That was a new one not seen on any other Trek ship before.
I don't really care for the Intrepid, the protruding secondary hull is an amplification of one of my biggest complaints of the Kelvin Enterprise. It looks good in some views, but overall does nothing for me.
I get like if you where to cross an NX and a constitution refit vibe. Kinda like it.
Hideous ship that ruins the name "Intrepid" forever.
I find it fascinating that they are going back to 23rd century designs for the 25th century starships. I honestly love it. I very much enjoy the Galaxy, Sovereign, Intrepid and Odyssey class designs, but this is classic trek. It's like apologizing for seasons 1 and 2
I was recently thinking that maybe the return to older designs could be the result of a design team composed of longer lived species in their later years. Using designs they had come up with before taking a 70+ year leave from Starfleet.
Logic dictates: if it ain't broke...
😂😂
No thats nostalgia. 25th century ships have grayish white hulls, black contrasts and blue and orange fixes.
Intrepid is a Vulcan ship……. Big mistake.
Those turrets could be pulse phaser cannons like the defiant has
Picard has come a long way from Copy Paste ships.
Love this awesome quirky design
Ship truly looked pissed off after nacelle damanged
I loved this ship. Very very cool design.
I'm glad it doesn't look like a gun, lol.
