Gotta love the see-saw that is the Federation. First Starfleet is “ill-equipped,” then once that complaint is addressed, suddenly they’re “too militaristic!” Can’t win for losing
that's politics in a nutshell, though I also get it the logic even if it's flawed in areas. Basically the Starfleet well acts like a real military that's being held back and in check by politics, while the pacifics have reasonable concerns, Starfleet is both a science organization and a military. They shouldn't be the first one to fire, but the first to attempt to defend themselves.
Been watching your channel now since it’s exception and I’ve commented plenty on the past. However, I’ve never said this. Your channel makes me happy. It’s a welcome distraction from the realities of our world. Thank you. 💙✨
Although the Enterprise and Miranda style vessels are iconic profiles for Federation ships. I loved the ships introduced in First contact. I fell in love with the Akira, the Steamrunner and Sabre Class' share an aesthetic quality, Norway class was not quite so eye-catching. They all broke the mould but all felt like Trek in terms of design. Great lore video though.
I have always really liked the Steamrunner, its heavily armoured hull, compact design, and full 360 degree phaser coverage speaks to it's reputation of being key to any defense force. Its relatively low front profile has always made me think that it was designed to charge face first into enemy fire, with its low cross section allowing for it to slip by incoming fire. once past the frontline, it can open up on the surrounding ships. Always an A+ ship in my books
Agreed, I've always really liked the Steamrunner class. With its low profile and upgraded weapons, it seemd to me to ne the next logical step up from the Defiant.
I always thought the incorporated Warp cells into the haul was the best design. How many time did warp engines get knocked out of commission? Yet the Defiant class was always running. I had some great ideas for SF war ships
rarer than you think, it's most common only when someone is able to easily penetrate shields, by then it's usually a death nail for most ships since most trek ships have pretty high yields for torpedos and phasers.
In my head canon the Steamrunner was built as much in response to Star Fleets experience with the New Orleans class frigates as to the Borg. During the Cardassian border wars the New Orleans class proved to be a major strategic asset, as a NO with a full tactical load out of three torpedo pods could easily counter Cardassian vessels. The weakness of the design was it's dependence on shields and the vulnerability of it's thin nacelle pylons. The Steamrunner design was an attempt to retain the tactical strengths of the New Orleans while compensating for it's weaknesses.
Amazing video In the beginning, for some reason I always imagined this ship like a submarine of sorts, not like the Romulan Bird of prey but like the space submarines in Space battleship Yamato, that enter in some type of pocket dimension and fire from inside it. Maybe starfleet do something like this one day, sounds interesting huh?
What I'm curious about is the impulse engines. How do they work, is it fusion powered superheated plasma that is then collimated by strong magnetic fields and spit out the back of the craft to accelerate it forward? If so then all those beautiful nacelles and support struts would be vaporized wouldn't they? The deflector dish would fall behind as they left spacedock. Regardless I always enjoy your content, and find the ship designs both elegant, and for the most part aesthetically pleasing.
7:30 Starfleet falling from it's scientific roles? Why yes it did. Blame that on the forced bipolarization of Starfleet. One cannot have a peaceful organization that can switch to wartime quickly. I still / will say that Starfleet needs to be made into two forces: one military based and one science based.
The Steamrunner always struck me as the TNG movie era Oberth class in being an unusual design that still retains Starfleet design styling. Been fond of it for awhile and your backstory for how it came to be does make sense within the context of Trek I would say.
This was a really nice video. I'm not a fan of designs like the Steamrunner in comparison to ships like a Nebula where the Pod makes some sort of sense Podded or cutoff sections of a ship don't make much sense to me (and yes i know i will have a hard time when I finally come to watch Dis S3 onwards), that said i like the front view of this ship which seems like a good sister ship to the Defiant class. Outstanding on this video was the music for me that gave me Mass Effect vibes which is a feat not many tracks can. So thank you for this updated version of the video it was a joy to watch.
I've always been a fan of the Steamrunner being a mini-Akira - pass-through shuttlebay in the saucer section, torpedo launchers in the deflector pod. There's a set of fan-made blueprints along these lines, and I want to see a Starfleet Corps of Engineers series set on a Steamrunner built like that.
Star Trek has so many fantastic looking ships. Only problem as their doesn't seem to be any difference beyond skin-deep (Defiant excluded) since they tend have the same weapons, shields, speed, etc.
The Steamrunner always struck me as odd with its low number of phaser arrays and their coverage for a ship its size. Looking closer it seems to have a lot of armor, like the Defiant, so for a while I justified its role in a fleet engagement as that of a damage sponge. Basically it would fly around acting as a nuisance and tank hits that otherwise would have gone to more important target.
While I don't suggest the need for large vessels like the Sovereign class, Galaxy class before it and Exchessior before that have a useful place, I have always thought a smaller class of ship was a better idea. Ones that can operate as a squadron, but operate well individually also. The Steamrunner seems in line with this concept. Especially if they can be integrated into a unit of ships of many parts and redundant command, controll and tactical capabilities. If a squadron of say 15 of these are operating, which one contains the officers in charge? Which bridge does one take out to cripple the whole? A Tactical advantage against an enemy trying to engage such a group of vessels. Just my thoughts.
IF I were to take this shape and explain it, I would put a forward deflector dish on the leading edge of the sauce, then find another explanation for the aft segment….. better yet treat it like the mission/function components seen on certain Nebula and Miranda classes. NOW you can have it be everything from specialized sensor and weapons package, even secondary vessels
I love the steamrunner. The model in your video shouldn't the Shuttle bay in the front be recessed a little for a landing pad. Oh no I am thinking Sabre class.
The Steamrunner class was terrible to work with in "Star Trek Dominon Wars" game. I'd have to use this ship with saber class starships in the badlands where shields didn't work because the Steamrunner was helpless when fighting on its own.
🖖😎👍Very cool and very nicely well done and very well informatively explained and executed in every way shape and form and in every detail possibly provided indeed, I just have a problem with that the nacelles are built into the hull like they are and I'm sorry but I don't care how much protection you think you have from them some sort of radiation is still going to get through in one way or another!,🤔.
"...this handful of Steamrunner class starships were finally able to do what they were designed to do" ...blow up! It's the only class of ship that blows up on screen (apart from one Akira at the very beginning). two at the same time after 9:25 and one caught in the explosion after 9:46. 😂
What about the story lines from Star Trek Armada I and II with III upcoming? They were considered frigates that used long range cobalt torpedoes and had weak armor and shields.
Unfortunately the Armada Story line are too far fetched to really ever be used... LOVE the games, but I have to pick what makes sense as opposed to what I love!
Great video. I kinda feel you missed a few bits here and there but just my opinion. The cowling covering the necelles and part of the engines was to act as armor. The whole point on the steamrunner class was to be up close and personal with the enemy, able to take ALOT of punishment. Think of it as the federations version of a tank. Every anti borg ship had its role, being a focal point to soak up damage was the steamrunners. Hence the substandard weaponry. Other ships in the fleet more than made up for it...
Nice video on the Steamrunner Class, I would like to see more of the Anti-Borg starship class from beta canon. P.S. Why haven’t I heard from you in the comments lately?

Glad you enjoyed it! And thanks for the approval ;)
You don't see it much because the digital model was corrupted so they couldn't use it in dominion war arc on DS9
So glad to have the Akira, Norway, Saber, and Steamrunner class starships in my Eaglemoss collection.

I felt the same way about her when she first appeared. But she has grown on me as well.
ive been on a binge watch of your channel and theres soooo many videos yayyyyy entertainment lol
Glancing at the titles while adding my subscribed videos to my playlists, my mind read this as the steampunk class.
It's my favorite designed ship of the new classes ushered out. Thought of it as an upgrade/beefier version of the Defiant class.
The Sovereign class has 24 decks per First Contact. I can’t believe the difference in size between the Steamrunner with 18 decks!

These were the siege weapons in Armada. Good times.
