    It occurs to me that the anti-borg ships are meant to work a Cube like a team of bullfighters. All working together to bring the massive beast down.

      That is similar to a theory I believe that Lore Reloaded had come up with, though specifically with the Defiant-class. His thought was that they were meant to operate like a Kriegsmarine submarine wolfpack in WWII, working in a swarm to overwhelm a Cube’s resilience

      I like this idea
      They have the ability to alter energy output of weapons, Shields, and other systems. To keep the borg reevaluating which ships are the greater threat.
      The borg keep changing targets, giving each squadron a chance to recover and create openings for attack

    • @gulliverdeboer5836
      @gulliverdeboer5836 2 роки тому +3

      Maybe. Star Trek beam weapons have pin point accuracy (except when someone fires at the Defiant), infinite ammo, and energy can be shifted between beam and shield emitters around a ship. I'm not sure if there's such an advantage to attacking a Cube from multiple sides, you'd actually expect the smaller ships to have an advantage when they all concentrate their firepower on one side of the Cube, trying to overload the shields and only being in the firing arc of some of the beam emitters. And Starfleet using lots of smaller ships is simple economics: it's almost always cheaper to build 10 small ships than one huge ship with the same firepower, especially when the enemy can easily cut through a ship's armor/shields, like the Borg can. That's also why modern navies don't build battleships anymore.

    You answered your own question about the deflector pod being swept backwards instead of forwards. I'm not sure why everyone seems to hate it because it makes total sense. If the warp core gets hit then it is physically as far away from the main hull as possible, giving a higher chance of survival to the crew inside. It kind of reminds me of the A-10 Warthog, one of the reasons the engines are placed the way they are is because if hit by a missile the exploding engine is as far away from the main body and fuel tank as possible.

    I would like to suggest that the anti-Borg mission of the steamrunner can be described as "to disperse the Borg's attention for a prolong period".
    Against the Dominion/Cardassians, it was used very similar to shock cavalry or stormtroopers (aka assault troops). They punch through enemy lines to disrupt the enemy's defense and allow for a breakthroughby follow-on forces.

    I think Steamrunner is a very appropriate name for the class. It's fast and hard to remove out of ones way with brute force, just like running steam. Plus it always makes me think of some retro-futurist steampunk design that although not the most powerful, it has an enduring conviction to steadfastly not relent until she's given all she's got.
    Also I agree in regards to the angle of the deflector/pod.

    The pylons sweep backwards to allow more room for shuttles/fighters to enter and leave the hangar bays at the back of the saucer. I think the Steamrunner class tries to protect its hangar from direct exposure to firepower, but also to provide enough room for shuttlecraft to maneuver from the hangar safely, especially during combat you wouldn't want your own fighters colliding into the pylons, etc.

    Nice video! The Steamrunner-class reminds me of the US Navy Des Moines-class heavy cruisers. While the Steamrunner doesn’t have anything to parallel the auto loading main battery of the Des Moines, they are similar in the sense that they have extensive armor protection, heavy subdivision, a large amount of redundancy, and increased magazine capacity. Both ships were built to take a stand against the enemy and be a veritable threat to whatever they’re fighting for as long as possible.

    The issue with the dedicated anti-borg role is the registry numbers, with several examples (including ones you've used in this video) in the 52xxx range. The Defiant is NX-74205; that's a big jump if both designs were instigated after Wolf 359. From what I can tell there are a few contradictory registry numbers for the USS Galaxy, but the lowest is NX-59637, and that suggests the Steamrunner class actually pre-dates the Galaxy class altogether. The small phaser strips are also unusual on later ships as you correctly note, but not the Ambassador class, which is notable for its small and disconnected phaser strips. I think this points to the Steamrunner class being the result of an earlier mini-rearmament phase. There's enough incidents and conflicts in the several decades pre-TNG to motivate a more combat oriented ship with approximately Ambassador class technology, and it's quite plausible that ships like that could be up-armored and upgraded in other ways when the threats started looking more immediate.

    I’ve always really liked the Steamrunner class, but I do think that an underslung deflector would look better forward sweeping or swept back and above the saucer, like the Alkira, which is probably the reason it’s underslung to differentiate the designs, although I do like to see some design commonality so personally would have liked it above.

      The Akira does not have an oversaucer deflector, it's deflector in under the saucer. The pod on the pylon over the saucer is a torpedo launcher, one of 18 the Akira has including a few that fire sideways out of the side of the saucer.

    If only the embedded nacelle design became the new paradigm for Starfleet, instead of them just going back to the cliched _primary and secondary hull_ with _two nacelles on pylons_ for Picard's copy/paste fleet.
    It could have become symbolic of the new Militarism of Starfleet, they were no longer explorers… they had pulled back.
    And meanwhile their traditional Multirole do everything explorers still keep the old layout style.
    Apparently that was the plan post Nemesis film for following outings … but with Nemesis crashing at the box office, and going the prequel route, that was abandoned.
    Starfleet was going to have compact muscular ships (with integrated nacelles and a 'Defiant inspired layout') to show that the Dominion War had had a profound affect on Starfleets outlook.
    But as far as the Steamrunner, I would have preferred it didn't have all that *negative space* and instead it was one continuous hull, to give the impression that it was a _tank in space_ that could take a beating from any angle.

    Steamrunner class: the freedom brick of the Federation. A task force of 2 of these and 3 Defiants would be a very nasty wing to deal with and could be perfect for interdiction and guerilla fighting.

  • @SPatrickRoss
    @SPatrickRoss 2 роки тому

    I see this and immediately think back to your battle of the giants video. The tactics the Vorta used wouldn't have worked against a Federation Task Force. The Jem Hadar battleships worked because of weaknesses in Romulan ships and tactics. The fact that they had close with their big guns. Starfleet could sit their Sovereigns and cruisers at torpedo range easily side stepping the siege guns. Letting the Defiants and fighters take the attack ships and the Steamrunners wear down the defences of the Battleships and Battlecruisers.

      @@venomgeekmedia9886 Exactly. In that regard, the Cardassian battleship is better designed to face off against Federation and Klingon ships then the Jem Hadar battleship. In the end, the Dominion would have been better served building upgraded Hutet class battleships.

    I absolutely adore the rugged look of the Steamrunner. My headcanon is that it was designed by Tellarites, their ship also tend to be pragmatic, though and shaped like a ram, just like themselves.
    The only thing I hate is that the Impulse engines are pointed directly at the pylons. That is so weird. Star Trek Online makes it better with a variant where the impulse engines are *in* the pylons, though.

    I thought the steamrunner only had a single forward torpedo tube. It was described as only having one tube in armada as an artillery ship which isnt official but a video i saw said it had one forward tube too. It having two forward torpedo tubes is odd rather than one fore one aft especially if its a close brawler as it would have to manouvre in close ranged combat and need an aft tube. I also heard it has quantum torpedoes. I thought i knew the steamrunners official traits compared to things from pc games etc that are not official but i should probably check. Nice vid btw

    I love the Steamrunner class. It would be such a cool ship to see a tv or comic series based off of, between the combat capability and the police/patrol roles I think there would be a lot of cool stories to be written. With all the space for torpedoes, I imagine they could retrofit one and replace some of the torp magazines with science facilities and turn it into a super tough science ship.

    I'm not a fan of that Deviant art render that seems to squish it's warp nacelles together pushing them out of line with the Bussard Collectors, it looks wrong. I suppose they didn't put the deflector/engineering section on top as they already had the Akira running round with it's pod on top and wanted to distinguish them from one another in long shots.

  • @lynngreen7978

    What if it has two cores, like the Intrepid MSD? Primary in the deflector module, and a secondary in the main hull.

      That's a lot of area to lose in my opinion. From the looks of the schematics, it seems that ejection of the warp core would be easy where it's at. Just drop it straight out and you're good.

  • @bsmnt23

    So...wait. Hold on. The primary goal of Starfleet is scientific exploration, but it's the RESCUE ship that can take the lumps that exploration can often dish out? Here's a concept, and bear with me here: make the rescue ship the exploration ship. If it's a Steemrunner that ends up needing a rescue, you know that you're going to need a bigger ship for it anyway. It'd be great going off into the unknown on a tin foil hulled exploration ship knowing that there's likely a big strong Steemrunner out there probably no more than a week away to maybe pull your bacon out of the fire. Maybe.

    W/ all the "perversion" of the Original Enterprise - 1701/1701A, the Steamrunner is gorgeous in it's deflecter down config.
    The warp core has to be in the saucer. Flow reversing is too tedious.
    Will champion 2 names, Corsair & Marauder. That's my 2 cents.
    1A the initial Enterprise
    1B the Defiant
    1C the Steamrunner! Many thanx & be safe 🦊

    The problem with changing the angles on the Steamrunner, is that it would look quite similar, top-down, as the Akira. That one design, however unlikable to look at, separates this design from the other Borg task force ships, and burns itself into our imaginations, unequivocally.

    This model never made any sense when considering the class was a "bruiser", the deflector is incredibly vulnerable in that position.

    • @venomgeekmedia9886
      @venomgeekmedia9886  2 роки тому

      Not really. It's placed at the very back of the ship. Heavily armoured. From most angles you won't get a clear shot at it.

    • @ornatus9616
      @ornatus9616 2 роки тому

      @@venomgeekmedia9886 The only way it's covered is if the ship is pointing at a target and tilting slightly down so the main body of the ship is covering it. In any other position it can be shot at (from the side, rear, ventral, dorsal, and even the front, as it dangles below the main body). To me, it makes better sense to stick it on the secondary hull and use that heavy armor to cover that area around the deflector, and therefore the warp core. When placed on the secondary hull in the usual position it is completely covered from the top and rear. Just my opinion.
