Good morning this is the second or third time I’ve watched your video I love Your hair last night I started my locks again maybe this is about the fifth or sixth time I’ve started I’ll keep them In for a couple of days the longest I think I went was a month and then I took them down and start again and started again this time I’m going to keep them in and you said embrace your loc’s loc’s are suppose to grow whatever way they grow and they look the way they look and thank you for telling me to keep my hands out of my hair. my thing is I don’t know how to wash my hair I’m scared if I wash it I’ll take it down I’m not at the time right now to go to a loctician or someone to wash my hair I’ve been off work since February with a broken foot it’s not healing like it supposed to so I said I can do this sit here and embrace my lock’s so I just want to tell you thank you and keep doing what you’re doing and keep embracing your life journey because you are very beautiful with your loc’s and I want to get there too I’m going to get there so keep encouraging me the way that you do
Thank You~ Robin
I just started my locs 7/28/22 and I really appreciate your video of what to do and not do. I didn't know about putting oil in my hair, keeping my hands out of my hair and the wig cap way of washing my hair. I'm going over to IG to follow you and check out your products. Keep up the informative videos my beautiful sister 🥰
Hello Courtney by my hair being short can I start my locs by twisting with my fingers
Can u help me I'm a week in so far I love the journey but not sure on the care of them yet
I am in month number 9 of my loc journey. My "ONLY" regret is that I didn't start this journey years ago.
Same here! Loving it
Love to hear that!!
I know I'm not a loctician but I know for a fact that oil does not moisturize, it seals moisture in. Moisture needs to happen often (3 or 4 times a week) and moisture comes from water. Wetting your hair often keeps your locs moisturized and a lightweight oil will seal that moisture in. I'm surprised locticians are still telling people not to wet their locs. I hope that "advice" quickly fades out like beeswax lol .... dry locs is counter productive. But I love your locs and your nose ring and you're absolutely beautiful. Much love
Steam is good.
you’re completely right! I wish she made that clearer
Yeah because I just got locs 12-18-2021 and they told me to only use water for 4 weeks just oil & my scalp is itchy , locs merging and dry. I look a hot mess. I came from being a natural. This is definitely a journey. Especially finding out what works for my hair
Oil doesn’t “seal” because water evaporates. Also, oil and water don’t mix applies to one one’s hair as well.
That’s should’ve common sense… like a plant 🌱 you water it for it grow
Started my locs 2/21 and I love it so far. The first time I’ve felt like myself.
Yes! I felt a very similar feeling! Like THIS is what my hair was made for!
@@CourtneyGrayton Thank You so much for the advice. I just started my loc journey. Yes, I'm having emotional struggles with the not so cute stage. I'm all about the cute Do. I'm about 4months in and waiting for the "cute" to set back in... TTYL
Yes, it's a beautiful thing! Self acceptance
Started today June 21 2023
I started my locs yesterday and your loving words mean so much to me. I was scared that I’d hate the look of short starter locs on me, but I’m really embracing it and loving this stage in my journey🥰
Congrats on starting your loc journey! That is so good to hear. Thank you for watching this my video and engaging!
How’s your journey going? I wanna get starter locs like yesterday 😭😩
how’s your journey going? i cut my locs off like week ago and i restarted them tdy. i was going to wait like a year or so bc i’ve never had to go thru the short loc stage and i was scared of how it would look on me , but i’m embracing it.
me too.I love my locks :)
Thank you so much for the information. I was ecstatic to see your locs were about the same length as mine so your information resonated with me more than other video's I've watched. I started my loc journey May 19, 2021 and my hair was about 3" long. I've had my 1st wash/retwist at my stylist but I want to learn how to wash and care for them when she's not available. My scalp is also very sensitive and I can't use coconut, olive or tea tree oils so imagine how excited I got when your video had no recommendation for their use! Thank you again for sharing your professional insight and information.
I started my locs yesterday I’m so glad I found your channel
I’m about 6 weeks into doing locs and I’m pretty clueless, so this is pretty informative. Thank you so much!
U have made me comfortable about this journey. Blessings!!
I started my love journey 11/20. I’m glad I found you.
Thank you !! I loced 2/14/22 and this was the most informative video I’ve seen so far . Some people just be chatting about being patient lmaooo I appreciate the Fact that you answered all my questions ! Thank you
Just started mine 11/30, I binged watched some of your videos the day before. So glad I did. Made me more comfortable and confident in my decision.
Ha-ssential! I'm so using this 🤣. This is my second loc journey & you're speaking to every single thing I learned the first go round. Such a beautiful soul, thank you.
Thanks for this. My Sun started locks this year…after asking for two years. I finally agreed after he turned 10, but I’m clueless! He does go to a lock-tician but I do want to be more educated about locks so that I can support him through the process. 💙 He loves his little locks and I love that he loves them.
I got my locs 2-2 -21. This is going to be a journey ☺️
Congrats! I’m excited for you 🙌🏾✨ I hope my videos help you along this amazing journey!
@@CourtneyGrayton yes thanks
Congrats!! I’m starting today sis!!
Me too! Yay I started the same day with braids, how is your journey so far? ✨

I love your commentary, I am two into my journey I am loving it already Thank you .
At my 7 months mark and my locs are budding. I agree to definitely take pics of your baby locs week by week coz I did. My hair has changed since I put them in and I can't believe it! 😃 I keep staring at them seeing how much they've changed. I am also covering my teenage budding stage. 💓
That’s awesome congratulations
Thank you for the pertinent information. I started my loc journey on May 23rd. I’m so excited! I watched your video twice to ensure that I had the information down. Again, thank you 😊

My pleasure!
Your positivity and expression of beauty in the starter phase has made this choice so much more enlightened! Thank you 😊
Thank so much!! 💓
Your voice and your words just calmed me the hell down and now to embrace my journey I love my frizz I do not need a retwist embrace the frizz ❤
Thank you for this video! I’m in week 3 of my loc journey and I’m loving every minute of it. 😊

I notice you commented this so long so ! How is the journey coming along ?!
I just got my locs a week ago. I love your delivery 💜 will be following to learn from you🙌🏽

I Love Your Spirit! I just started my loc journey and I’m very excited! I appreciate you and the information you shared… Thank You!🌻
Thanks so much for watching! If there are any other videos you’d like to see, please let me know
I just restarted my journey 5/6/21. I was locked (professionally) for 4yrs (2014-2018). I cut them from poor self maintenance & medications. My texture changed from 4b to 3c and fine. I self started this time with 2 strand twists. This journey is waaaaay different. Patience is a learned virtue. Lol! I'm praying for a better result.
I’m starting with crochet locs . I’ve tried coils , twist and braids with no success. Will definitely follow what you say ❤
This video was very informative !!! Definitely going to binge!😊I just started my loc journey on 4.19.21! 😌
I started my loc journey on 12-26-20 and this video really helped. Thank you🤍
Good advice!! Started my journey with the comb coil method on July 2017 by my loctician, best decision ever!
That's awesome! Congrats and welcome to the loc'd team! I hope you enjoy your journey and if you ever have questions, feel free to ask!
I can tell you know what you’re doing. Very direct and very informative! Definitely going to be my go to info source!
Thanks so much!! I’m excited to share more!
Courtney I love your vibe and your wisdom. I'm going to try starting my own, and your tips are priceless. Thanks for such a sweet disposition....
I don't know what your locs look like right now, but in this video they look so pretty! I was always scared my hair would stick up and look weird but now I see with confidence it could be so pretty. I love how you wear your locs. This is so nice to see! Thank you Courtney!!
Girl... luvvvv your vid! Your hair looks GREAT & HEALTHY! And, good books in your collection by the way! Anyway --been wanting to journey into twists/locs but I've been hesitant for a long time (work, short hair, lack of confidence, etc).. but wow, as I've gotten older, my focus is on MORE healthier hair vs looks & opinions... 🙂 THANKS again for a to the point vid!
Yayyyyy this is my sis!!! She is BEYONDDDD about this natural hair life 😍
Thank you sissss!
I really like this video and answered my question from a previous video I watched. Here I go to embrace my journey. Thanks!
Hey Queen! I JUST started mine yesterday! Like did my own, starting with the twists, this is Definitely going to be a journey! 💫🥰
Have they locked at all and how long did it take
I am on my 7 week journey, I got a retwist done on week 6. I am.loving it so far. My hair is budding already. I have soft hair and I am totally surprised that they are budding already 🙂🙃
Thank you so much this information. I know I cannot do those tight 'snatch' styles as you described. I love you starter locks. And those gold earrings-and your style overall.
Thank you! ♥️
I started my locs nov of 2021 with the extensions and i cut them out and now im watching my hair flourish and grow but this video definitely did help
Thank you the tips on how to care for your locs. The do’s and don’ts. This is my second journey for locs and by watching these videos they are very educational for me to main healthier locs. Thank you for this information
It’s my pleasure!
I'm coming up on 2 years locd in June and locing my hair was THE best decision I've made
I think it was the best for me too! Can’t wait to start again 😬🙌🏾
I love the way you explained everything, starting my journey soon, still trying to read up, watch videos etc thanks alot🤗🤗🤗
My pleasure! Check out my other videos!
I just started my locs journey two days ago 🙂... your words are helpful.
I just got my locs and I love them. This video was so helpful. Thank you for sharing.
My pleasure! Congrats on starting your journey! 💚🥺
I actually find that shampooing the locks help the process even faster. Shampooing it every 2 weeks at the beginning stage. That keeps the locks clean and the water helps it to bind together quickly. Also keeping it moisturized with water, and the oil locking in the moisture. Then after they mature getting a retwist every 4 to 6 weeks works fine depending on what the client likes. Of course no tight styles every visit. But hey it's our own journey and our clients. As long as their hair is healthy and they still have all of their hair strands and edges with no build up then it's all good!
Yup! I’m moreso and advocate of letting the hair do what it needs to do. My goal is not to “make the hair loc faster”. Typically those methods involve drying the locs out, which I will never suggest.
I had my first set for 9 years, and you’re right, I didn’t like the baby phase, at all, but I loved, and missed the teen phase. But because I wanted to see my loose natural hair (hadn’t been loose natural since I was a child), I cut them off three yrs ago (Apr 2018), missed them, and restarted them on 10/20/21. Now I’m fully embracing the starter/baby phase.
I’m definitely going to be right back with you, enjoying the starter loc phase! Glad you can appreciate them this second time around ♥️
YOURE BEAUTIFUL AND SO ARE YOUR LOCS! I STARTRD MINE A YEAR AGO AND IM LOVING THE JOURNEY!! THX FOR THE VIDEO.

@@CourtneyGrayton yes it really is☺

Love your video ❤ You're so adorable 😍 I started my locs 2 years ago and I absolutely love them. I started locs on my daughter a few months ago and she LOVES them too. Great information and wonderful energy. New Subscriber 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Thank you ☺️♥️
Thank you for this video! I just started my loc journey today (7/31/21). I've been natural for 12 years but this is the first time doing starter locs. I have patience but I am truly praying for patience throughout this journey. I'm heading over to IG to follow you there as well😊
Just started my locs and then found your page and love each one of your videos. You give straight forward, great advice. Not to mention you seem incredibly kind!
Thank you so much for the kind words! 🥹 and thanks for supporting my channel. I’ll keep the videos coming!

I'm so glad I found your channel 😍😍😍thank you for your knowledge queen...HAPPY LOCn to all the newbies, I just started my journey yesterday 😊😀❤
Congrats!
Very encouraging video. I started my Loc journey June 17 2020. I am learning so much about myself my strengths as far as worrying about what people think. I let me hair do what it’s going to do I find myself smiling and loving myself.
Your comment just made me so happy! I’m glad it encouraged you. Comments like this is why I do what I do! This journey is such a rewarding one 🤲🏾
Your breakdown and how you simplified the info is great thanks
My pleasure! 💓
I just started my locs today! 6/21/22 and I couldn't be more excited :)
Congrats on starting!
Can’t wait for my consultation with you tomorrow! So much great information and energy here!
🥰🥰🥰
Started my locs almost exactly 9 months ago. Def learned a lot along the way and still learning but I’d say I’m in a good place right now with my locs. Noticing the growth is by far the best part.
Yes it happens so fast and in spurts, it seems like. I love it! Glad to hear you’re enjoying the journey
I just started my locs a week ago, so I hear what you're saying so I have to stop wearing a hat to work and just embrace them. That is so hard for me but I am going to try. And I thank you
Just had mine yesterday, thank you so much for the information.
Hello. I am in my 3rd week of locs, she done the two strand twist and had to loc them at both end, but I am over trying to deal with hair all the time. I enjoy you already, thank you sis. 🤗🤗
Mine are the same but not locked at the ends. Is that so they don't come unraveled? Or is there some other benefit?
Getting all the information I can before taking the leap onto this journey! Thank you sooo much!
My pleasure! I wish all the best for you on this beautiful journey!
@@CourtneyGrayton Awwww, thank you!
I just got my starter locs installed 2weeks ago. I am so grateful and happy I found your video. Thank you a lot! ❤❤❤❤
You are so welcome! Glad I could help
Started my journey 2 weeks ago.. ♥️ Thanks for the video!
Started mine 12-23-20. I wash and retwist every 4weeks and it has been beneficial. Usually I let my locs be free as possible, I only style on some weekends.
Congratulations on starting your loc journey! & that's perfect! your locs will thank you for that
I started my loc journey this past February. Your words were very encouraging. I'm so excited!
Wonderful! I’m excited for you ☺️
Thank you so much for your honesty and advice.
I love your eye makeup so much
Thank you so much! 🥰 It’s my go-to so you’ll see it often lolol
As a loctician you should also know you should never wear any loc jewelry or manipulate your starter locs at this stage is the most crucial. Just wanted to make that known as I've been doing research on my locs for many years. Also It can cause breakage, I waited at least a year before up dos and wearing loc jewelry I just found that it works best. Also for washing hair as "normal " to each is own everyone is different so it goes as a personal preference. Washing my hair works best for me 2-3 weeks with low manipulation and once a month retwisting in my early stages. Again to each is own. As the locs mature I believe less retwisting is better it strengthens and helps with less breakage also helps with thickening. Just some ideas I thought helped me definitely less is more. I've used oils essential oils and rose water and I love aloe vera gel as a retwist gel its less buildup they are all my best friend. Simple regimen is the key to hair growth and less damage. Health over looks! Light n Locs!🌤 Peace loc family 🙏🏽👊🏾
Always health over looks! Just as many of the other things you mentioned as “to each their own”, using loc jewelry is the same. I recommend very lightweight jewelry like the shell I have. A lot of the time, the heavier jewels won’t fit starter locs anyway. Thanks for your input. ♥️
@@CourtneyGrayton personally I don't use loc jewelry on my starter locs I wouldn't want to interrupt any locing progression that my hair is experiencing but I get it I used to on my first loc journey but this is my second loc journey and I decided to start a second loc journey for personally reasons, but I'm making sure on this journey I am having the upmost natural experience and excepting what ever how ever my hair wants to loc so you can say I'm semi free forming. I love the journey Blessings on your journey 🙏🏽
Love Light n Locs 🌟👊🏾💗
This is what I was looking for...my daughter and I just started our journey yesterday...I can't wait to be able to add a few pieces of jewelry 😍😍
Hello how are you? I am 3 months in my dreads journey can I wash my hair yet ?

The last part really touched me going through the starter loc journey.
I just started my loc, so I thank you for the wisdom
It's my pleasure! Congrats!!
Started my locs today w/ Courtney!!!!!!!!!! 06/08/21 new journey !!
Started mine with 2 strand twist 5/23/21 and absolutely LOVE how my journey is coming along ❤️
Congrats on your journey 🙏🏾👌🏾
@@reihannahherring8605 thank you!!
I just got my 2 strand twist locs too on 2/9! I'm only one week into this journey.. I have so many questions! My loctician has advised a couple of things but I've hear so much contrary to the advise:
Newbie Loc Questions:
1. Prior to starting my new twist My hair was washed and conditioned and conditioner washed out no oil. I was told that I should have used a clarifying shampoo by another loctician. Tru or False?
2. Hair was interlocked at root, 2 strand twist at bottom. She used TGIN rose water which was a bit filmy to me and made my thick yet fine 4B,C hair extremely soft🥺. Some have unraveled.
3. Upkeep - She recommended that i spray the TGIN rose water for moisture and only oil scalp as needed not the hair yet since they are not matured yet?
If I'm not going anywhere, she says keep them in 2 french braids so I'm not manipulating the. Contrary to another who has told me that my hair should be loose so they can start forming locks?? True or false?
I'm so confused because I read so many different things and everyone says trust the process and enjoy the journey but since everyone's hair is different every stylist is different you just don't know.
I love this channel because there's a lot of good advice out here but I wanted to speak to someone whose locks are flourishing who have two strand twists.
I would love to chat further on Instagram if you have a channel and I can send you a picture.
@@seelykerr7690 what I’ve learned on my journey was to do what your locs want you to do!
Thank you for this video,it has helped me I’m only 6 months into my journey.
Loc’d 3/20/22 ❤scalp started to itch a little a few weeks later. Glad I found ur video 😊
Thank you, Courtney! You were amazingly informative. I've been on my loc journey for about 6 years. I'm 51 and my hair has never been this long and healthy. I too enjoyed having my locs at the shorter stage. I just love the
"carefree" look. I'm still learning a lot about caring for my hair and I found your video to be insightful, educational and honest. I would like to learn more about the best oils to use for my hair as I have already purchased coconut and olive oil not knowing that they could cause more damage than good. Be Blessed.
Thank you so much! I can't wait to say I'm 6 years in, but I also LOVE this stage as well. Just embracing it all. I'll definitely create a video specifically about oils to use/not use. I appreciate the suggestion :)
In her video on best oils for locs, she rephrased what she meant about olive & coconut oil.
She basically said these 2 oils work better when mixed in with a more Lasting Carrier oil.
My sister has very thin hair. She swears by Olive oil.
But my hair is pretty thick; and Olive oil is nearly soaked in & ‘thirsty’ an hour or 2 after using it!! Similar results with the coconut oil.
See Courtney’s 2nd video about the best oils to use.
Again, they’re not bad, they’re just a bit too ‘lightweight to use on their own.
Thank you- you have a sweet and compassionate spirit. I just started my Loc journey about 1 month in. I wish I had started last year. I have spent so much money on hairstyles.. Some days are hard but they are getting better. As a African American woman I’m proud of my hair and I’m looking forward to the journey No more artificial nails. Just me. On a side note. I’m Self-Employed, Home Based. - Come ON - y’all let’s do this!
Thanks for the motivation.
Congrats!!! I Love this self-love journey that you're on! I hope it's still going well
I just stated this journey a few days ago. Thanks for this video. My loctician barely gave me after care information. This helps a lot.
Glad it was helpful! It’s my pleasure
thank you! i started my loc journey 2/22. this information helps alot!
It’s my pleasure! So happy it’s helping people 💚
Appreciate this video ^^ I'm starting my locs this Saturday and am doing finger coils myself. My scalp can be finnicky so going multiple weeks without washing is a challenge, as I usually wash once a week, but I'm going to try tea tree and peppermint oil, along with rose water to help.
I'm starting locs tomorrow how do you like them
@@moonhoneymami I love the way they look so far! Today marks day 2 for me. :) I'm going to document my locs journey on my channel and am recording my first video today. No pressure but feel free to follow along if you'd like to see the progression 😊
I started my LOCS two weeks ago and I’m still getting used to them. Either my hair grows pretty fast or the loctician did not do a good job. Within a week there’s a lot of new growth. Either way, the journey is really real. I keep hearing trust in the process.
How are they now
That happened to me and my daughter. I was told the same, but it just didn’t make sense to me by what I’ve seen with others. We were 8 & 9 months in and our hair looked more like freestyle wicks and not small locs, which is what we asked for. I decided that we are going to someone else. Thank God we did! 6 months in and her locs look great! They are not unraveling like before, the budding is small and not huge like before and her locs are staying small. I am going to start mine again next month. My daughter wanted to start immediately and we are both grateful!!
@@jlatham8442 Yeah I went to someone else too. The place I went to (Happy to Be Nappy) here in Detroit were horrible. I went to three different loctitian and they all sucked especially the guy who was banging the crap out of my head giving me a headache with those clamps. The person I have now is amazing; now my hair is starting to actually look nice and like locs. She said the place I went to before didn’t even part my hair right. There are different size parts in my head. I would have started over but after seeing how she styled and fixed my hair I’m just going to stick with it.
Thank you. Very informative I started my journey almost 6 months ago. Your tips are great.
Just started my second loc journey 10/22 I’m so excited
Great tips! Thanks for the info on olive and coconut oil. I’ve been using olive oil and my starter locs look a hot dry mess. 🤦🏾♀️
Thank you! And it’s my pleasure! I’m thinking about making a video specifically about oils not to use 🤔
Your brows are so thick and beautiful. Thanks for this information. I'm approaching month 3; 2strand twists.
Thank you so much! My brows are my babies lolol how’s your journey going?
I'm dealing with a lot of locs trying to stick together . I have a bunch of stiff areas by my roots I assume it's budding. I have never slept without my bonnet 😁. I do need to find something to help with moisture . Otherwise it's going great.
Love love the information and the honesty.
