My 600-lb Life is an American reality television series that has aired on the TLC television network since 2012. Each episode follows a year in the life of morbidly obese individuals, who usually begin the episode weighing at least 600 pounds (270 kg), and documents their attempts to reduce their weight to a healthy level. Update episodes, called "Where Are They Now?", feature one or more previous patients, picking up a year or more after their original episodes aired.
Patients are placed under the care of Iranian-American Houston surgeon Younan Nowzaradan (often referred to as simply "Dr. Now"), who first has them attempt losing weight on their own by following a strict diet, and then depending on the patient's progress may offer gastric bypass surgery or sleeve gastrectomy to further assist in weight loss.
Have you noticed that in a lot of these cases, the family members who are "helping" them aren't that much smaller than the obese person they're helping? Many of those people have large weight problems, too.
When people say "obeasity runs in the family", it's mostly because of generationally awful food choices.
Sure, genetics play a role, but eating 10 cheeseburgers, several pizzas, and heaps of sweets and chocolates a day, your choices play the biggets role.
@@BoopSnootAndTroubleshoot🎯🎯🎯💯
@@BoopSnootAndTroubleshoot it's all just excuses. You can't outrun a bad diet and that's what they all have. The genetics argument is just yet another excuse.

I lost 100 pounds and I feel amazing 😍.
Proud of you Susanna. Very hard to lose that amount of weight. Take care ❤️
I'm very happy for you and you have my respect for your willpower
Great, you took charge of your life .
People "look me up and down." What do you expect?
You did it to yourself honey.
They look her side to side
Less "up and down." More "side to side."
It's always so immature when they say things like that.

@@FeuerblutRMHmmm, so you don't see anything wrong with people staring at those who are in wheelchairs? A paraplegic? Someone with cerebral palsy? Most adults have more sense than that. i feel happy these people are getting their lives under control, some of these people are truly dedicated and i feel so good for them!!
I wonder how people in a lot of these episodes afford fast food so often. That stuff is definitely not cheap.
I wonder that every time I watch one of these episodes. They must be spending hundreds every week, both for fast food and at the grocery store.
@@dancingfirefly7761 I know, right. None of the people appear to be wealthy. Then again, maybe they are but the money all goes to food. I not mocking them but we all know the cost of food and take-out food. I wish they could say what they spend on food and how.
Ridiculous amounts of American social benefits. UK equivalent is £350 a month
@@Linzig53american disability benefits are not enough to cover that much food. And McDonald's doesn't take food stamps.
@@MeganVictoriaKearns they still get a hell of a lot more than we do. There must be ways round it that means they can order so much. I can't even remember the last time I had a take away
I'm not sure about anyone else, but the big question I always wanna ask is "how the hell are you affording this many calories?" Like 60% of the food they get is fast food, and they imply they get these MASSIVE portions EVERY. DAY. Like, I can only assume they have disability, which means we, the taxpayer, are literally PAYING for these people to eat themselves to death.
Disability wouldn’t cover a week’s worth of food. People tend to think the government is handing out thousands a week or something. Nope.
@@daneenh5348yep! & it’s difficult to access! $800 a month for me
Exactly what I was thinking 🤔 Obviously they don’t have jobs..
Food stamps doesn’t pay for prepared foods and disability benefits are next to nothing especially if you don’t have a work history. They have to be making money online or someone else is paying for the food. If you don’t have kids you get a lot less food stamps but if you have kids you get more food stamps and if you’re head of household the child will get money until they turn 18. I don’t know how they afford a place to live, bills and astronomical amounts of food. The taxpayers are paying for it somehow.
Your taxes
The "ketchup plate" ... _that's_ when you know you may have gone too far.
Lmao nah my mom always has a “ketchup plate” when she has fries or hashbrowns and she’s a normal weight 😂
@@rosylagoon3600yeah ketchup isn’t the devil. I’m 125lbs 5’4 and I’m a condiment queen but the thing is I’m having decent sized meals nothin crazy I’ll eat 1200 calories a day a lot because my appetite isn’t very big. How ever most of my calories are in sauce if I have meals but I am not fat. Idk. Their issue is the volume eating of junk food and snacking.
Unbelievable! I am a recovering fent addict and i know how hard that addiction was to overcome...i can only imagine how hard food addiction is...because you cant have abstinence from food
exactly, i too am a recovered addict and i used to make fun of these people. I thought about it how hard any addiction is to overcome. Granted you're not going to have withdrawls if you don't have pizza but it's very hard to change
Yes people fast all the time..there’s ways to eat all day if u want it can be lettuce celery carrots , that kind of food. Not as fun as cake and ice cream but you’re chewing food lol
That's no excuse Dr. Now said nobody has to eat everyday. When you do eat have only one meal.
That’s true, but there are choices.
actually you can abstain from sugar (except fruit) and fried food. if you take only that from you menu and put more vegetables and very little oil you can lose weight. i shouldn't talk, i know everything and still i'm more than 30 kg. overweight
How the heck do these people afford this amount of food with no jobs?? Even with food stamps for one person, they eat the amount of money given for an entire month in a day or two, how ??
Ding, ding, ding - we have a winner ! Most people eat to live, these people live to eat ...
Credit card debt too.
A lot of these calorie dense, high volume foods are cheaper than smaller, healthier products.
Disability $ & Food stamps..Social Security help from parents..State caregivers because the weight causes enough other problems to qualify for the Disability..Regardless it takes years of easy, lazy, enabling.
They probably claim disability and other types of things so they can receive more benefits.
Do you know how much money you get if you have a kid from tax credits and from food stamps and Welfare and at the same time they allow you to have a part-time job.. and if you have section 8 you pay a ridiculously low amount in rent
Crazy thing is, it doesn’t matter what they eat. You can eat whatever you want and loose weight. But the portions are just out of control. The cake for breakfast is pushing it, nothing says “fuel the day” like straight sugar.
Fool the day!
Truth portion sizes are the key!!
Sean's story was one of the saddest. He wasn't allowed to mature, his mother was very controlling and then he passed. Very sad.
You gotta admit that was kinda hot and sexy
Sean's mother was infuriating.
I mean they take a family member to get the food or they get really mad
I mean ANGRY
@@user-Colette01251Let them be angry. They can barely walk, what are they going to do? They'd get small healthy meals and nothing else if I were the one taking care of them. Complain and they don't get the next meal.
I don't live in America, so this is shocking to me.
In my country, we love to cook things from fresh ingredients. Not heating some processed food.
And I never see someone this obese.
I think obesity problems there doesn't rely only on individual problems, but also food companies.
agreed, I am from europe and I never had pre-diced frozen potatoes o.o likr what hassle is it to peel two potatoes and make them...
People are lazy and don’t want to take the time to cook. I live alone and I always cook enough for several meals and I just freeze the leftovers in individual serving containers so I always have home cooked food.

I don't understand how they can love food so much but don't eat any really good food. You always hear how much they love food. I don't see a steak meal, crabs, vegetables, stews (home made). What the problem is they are addicted to junk/fast food.
I don't see anything I'd ever put in my mouth.
It’s a junk addiction for sure
Because the ingredients in junk food are non satisfying and purposefully addictive
pathetic fast food people are unable to understand what real food is. These people are base.
I feel totally ill watching them eat that mutch junk food
"Isabella, I want something to eat before you make breakfast." @25:35 .You can't make this stuff up. 😭
Yes, they can make it up, and the production crew's directors did precisely that throughout the show's nine season run.
This is an addiction like alcohol, drugs, gambling.. these people need help not to be mocked..

Of all the addictions, food must be the hardest to let go since it’s something you naturally can’t stay away, easy access and practically everywhere. I had never heard of sausage gravy!
It's gross, you haven't missed anything lol. Most of the world wouldn't ear any kind of gravy for breakfast.
I have to say biscuits and gravy, which is sausage gravy, is delicious to me.
It is also so filling so I only indulge once in a awhile.

The only thing I can think about is where do they get the money to eat like that?!
I have a great job, and make a decent amount of money, and I could never justify spending that much on fast food! And most of these people don’t even work!
They're on disability.
These individuals eat more in one day than I do in a week 😮
Laying down eating, and on his stomach? How does the food go down or even digest? That's way too lazy to not even sit up to eat.
I said the exact same thing
I mean food goes down even when you're upside down. Bill Nye proved that 😂
Muscles bring the food down, not gravity lol
He doesn’t want to overdo things by sitting up! God, next thing he’ll be walking to the lavatory
These people are smart. they got it all figured out. I wanna just sit at home and eat and never do anything.
So....with all respect to you, how do you see that as "smart"?
I'm retired, but am able to get around fairly well, and I couldn't imagine just sitting here all day, stuffing my face and body with food. Especially not with what those people called food back then (the show was all done by Feb. 2012).
White flour, white sugar everything, white pastas, every sauce and dip highly sugared and sweetened...that's not living, and it's certainly not smart. They shopped in places such as dollar stores, deep discount stores (which carry very questionable foods, at best), food banks, and they never had vegetables on their plates, never.
I never once saw any of them eating sardines or mackerel, nor tuna or salmon, all of which are very nutritious, and two or three cans of any one of them would have gone a long way toward satisfying their huge appetites. Certainly would have given them real food that would have helped them feel full sooner and longer. No, they weren't any of them smart, which is why they were, perhaps still are, in that position.

When I was a kid I LOVED a bologna/cheese, onion/dill pickle/tomato sandwich. With mayo on home made bread of course! YUMM! I'm from the south, so we even ate them fried, natch. (but only one)
I also was raised on that and egg salad sandwich’s.
That’s such an interesting combo! What does Natch mean? Sorry I’m British 😂
@@cedmunds2071 🤣 Sorry, "natch" is just slang for "naturally"! Let me tell you that is one good sandwich (fried or not). I don't eat them anymore, because I don't eat bread, but I do remember it VERY fondly. . . .
@@Son_of_the_south2024 Oh, yes. My mom taught me how to make egg salad when I was just a little kid. Even today, my kids and friends think my egg salad is the very best ever. :-)
@@cedmunds2071 Natch=Naturally The way she is using the slang means "of course it's fried". People in the Southeastern part of the states fry a lot of foods. That's North Carolina, South Caroline, Georgia, etc.
okay, so after watching a lot of these episodes, the one question that's in my mind is: How much is their grocery bill each week? The people who are bedridden demand the food. I don't know why their loved ones give them what they want. Is it from not saying no from their childhood? I don't get it. I'd love to see a video contemplation of only enablers.
Good idea
So you don't want to know why they eat like this just how can they afford it, smh
"I did Everything we could think of.....we drank Diet Soda....."
Yep, thats about everything.
$30.63 is a third of my electric bill 😮 or gasoline for 2 weeks 😮
Are these people independently wealthy?
They sure are not on disability social security with food stamps because if they were they would be nearly starving.
It seems to me that most of the people featured on this show have relatives and friends who aid, abet and enable their out-of-control eating addictions. Many of the relatives are almost as big as the contestants themselves. It actually bothers me that Dr. Now doesn't ever seem to suggest treating the entire family of a contestant, since they are so often dangerously obese as well.
Ikr? Fascinates me as well! I get $185 in food stamps & $800 on disability a month
I was thinking the same thing! Spending £30 on a take away (not necessarily fast food) is a once a month or every two months treat for us and we are a two income household with no kids! No way on earth could I do that once or twice a day!
There needs to be some sort of criminal charge for the enablers. Feeding people to death should be a crime! It's no different than providing alcohol to an alcoholic or shooting up a junkie.
Yeah, if they had them tied up and force feeding them. Criminalizing people for giving food to someone that is WILLINGLY eating it is authoritarian. Even if these people wasn't providing food. What makes you think the obese individuals wouldn't find other means of obtaining the food?
Yeah but humans have to eat right? That’s the issue.
It is genuinely concerning that your vote would actually count in most countries.
That'll never happen for several reasons:
1) Feeding people horrible food isn't criminal unless the other party is FORCING them to eat.
2) The U.S. healthcare and insurance systems are too reliant on patients like these. Think about how much money these industries bring in annually treating conditions like diabetes, various cancers, and high blood pressure or hypertension.
3) Addicts will always find a way to get their fix, regardless if they have enablers in their lives. So you can brow-beat them, remove all of the horrible food in the house, etc...but if they want it, they'll get it.
At the end of the day, the responsibility ultimately falls on oneself. We are all adults here.
If the enabler were feeding children to death, CPS would take the child away and charge the parents. Not with adults.
Im curious as to how many times the go #2 a day,,, all that foods gotta be coming out somehow,, i cant imagine the dueces they drop 😅😅
Yes and how do they wipe ? Seriously?

I'm down 82 pounds since my surgery in November, I never ever could eat that much food though. I certainly would order a bunch of fast food but I always ate it throughout the entire day. Now I eat soup and lots of pickles most of the day.
The amount of money it must cost on the daily to eat…

One mother was pigging out and her 11 y o daughter [who cooked the meal ] with both cheeks full of food was about to shovel in more, the adults are terrible role models.
but at least they were at the table most of these blobs eat on the bed or sofa.
That wasn’t a plate it was a serving platter. Used to serve lots of people.
How do these people support themselves or their family financially? With all their takeaway and the shopping I'm figuring that's a huge food bill per week.
I’m pretty sure if they’re rendered immobile and were working before that they get disability when they can’t come in. Also usually have people who support them family or spouse in addition

Imo it also depends on how you were raised. I was a single parent and made healthy meals for my 3 children, which included meat, fresh fruit and vegetables, a well balanced diet. I was raised the same way. As adults now we all still eat what is put in front of us. Very seldom we had takeaway.
In this and every episode, with every one of these obese people, they keep saying they're hungry. What exactly do they mean by that? I can't believe, as much as they eat, that they're bodies are sending them actual hunger cues. Is it a psychological hunger, just a craving for the next fix?
It's the actual ingredients in junk food that makes them want more. It's not satisfying them either. And the more you eat the bigger the stomach stretches so they need more food to fill it. Hence why a gastric bypass works. It reduces the stomach to the size of an egg, but it can fail as people eat more and it stretches again.
Could many of these food addictions be cause at least partially by all the sugars and multiple types of sweetening that are in literally everything produced here in America?
Try googling the ingredients for a common product like ketchup or Mountain Dew for here in America then in the UK or the EU. They have food purity laws that we can’t get here because of big business.
Precisely. Just look at the stores they shopped in---Dollar Tree, Dollar General, food banks, meals-on-wheels, discount grocery stores---every single one of which carries primarily the cheapest made foods on the market.
The show ended production in feb. 2012, so the prices during its run were far lower than what we're dealing with in 20123, too.
@@jb6712the show is still going, it hasn’t ended.
It's definitely part of the problem. I would include food deserts as a factor as well, and the fact that none of these people seem to drink any water. Purified, spring, carbonated.....no water at all!
"Food purity laws". YES. That's exactly what we need, but how to get them started is the problem. Public awareness, please people, someone knowledgeable get it done!
Thank you. At 73, I am too old and don't have the resources to do it. Wish I did.
All these enablers are just as bad. “I do it because I love her”.

I once saw on My 600 lbs life someone order a meal for a family of 4 from 3 different fast food restaurants in the span of like 6 hours.
That’s insane!
I just don’t understand. If I get let’s say a McDonalds single burger (most people know how big they are) and after 2-5 bites I’m full. I have not had any gastric surgery either. I don’t think that’s entirely normal but regardless it blows my mind the quantity of food consumed by the folks on this show and that it is kept down. Mind boggling.
It’s because the stomach stretches. If you eat more and more your stomach stretches out to accommodate the food and then you have to eat more to feel full too. It’s a vicious cycle.
I know what you mean. Often I cannot finish an entire cheeseburger and small fries.
Is it just these people or are all Americans as impolite as some of the folks I've seen on this program? Surely not but telling the attendant to * gimme 6 burgers and *I want extra cheese and I want sour cream, whatever they're asking for. Show some respect - may I, please and thank you at minimum.

I’m British and I noticed this when I moved to study in America. Many say ‘gimme’ or ‘can I get’ or ‘I’ll have’ instead of ‘please may I have’ or ‘please can I order’ I don’t know whether it’s a culture thing but I really noticed it!
Assholes come in all sizes unfortunately. We say please and thank you I would say usually from my experience in drive throughs. However there’s always that jerk that pulls up with “I need..”

The enabling family members always upset me more than the people with obviously uncontrollable addictions. They are much more empowered to say no.
You can eat a lot of food, when the majority of your plate is vegetables! These people could lose weight without surgery but you have to change your lifestyle or you're going to fail. Watching this show stops me from eating, but I do like watching other people eat. Ngl I want to know where to get a banana milkshake.
It can't be too hard to make a banana milkshake at home, if you have a blender. Just vanilla ice cream, a nice slightly-overripe banana, maybe some milk to make it more liquid, and Whrrrrrrr, you've got yourself a banana milkshake!😋
You can eat anything you want and lose weight. Just make it balanced. Lasagna? ok but also two veggie sides and some fruit. Dont forget the garlic bread! Seconds only for veggies or fruit. This is how I am losing weight. Also exercise.
How do they afford so much food?
Wow. Stopping for food on the way home from the grocery store? Not a good idea!

No fast food, krisps, icecream wipped cream, kakes just a LOT if carrot and cabbitch. You learn to love it. I was 120 kg, now i am 60 and its wourth it. Keep struggling.
I’ve never seen anyone call to complain to a fast food place lol
How do they afford a month worth of food every day and obviously not work.
The First Lady just doesn’t know what to eat, or how. Don’t go to fast food everyday, every meal. She can also fast. I fast two three days out of the week, so she could do at least a day!
R.I.P Robert, and Sean.
Great narration. Loved it. 😂
those waffles and gravy kinda sound good 😂😂
It’s sad, most of these people eat from a PLATTER, not a dinner plate 🍽️ ! That is so excessive!
