Super Castlevania IV is a platform game developed and published by Konami and the first Castlevania game for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, as well as the fourth in the series overall. It was released in December of 1991 in the US. It was also released on the Wii's Virtual Console on December 25, 2006. It is a retelling of Simon Belmont's foray into Dracula's castle, first told in the original Castlevania. The game has all new levels (several featuring areas outside of the castle), 16-bit graphics featuring SNES Mode 7, and the soundtrack consists mostly of brand new pieces including a handful of remixes of previous Castlevania songs. This was a good donation read, but it was a bit hard to concentrate due to all that speed running going on at the same time.

Seems like no one tell the donator reader that the main event was the speed runners.
I think they've gotten better with this in more recent years. Luckily he just interrupts him to talk about the game.

Thank god that tone death announcer isn't around anymore. He keeps interrupting great commentary by the runner by screaming out minor or non interesting donations. Just ruins it.

It's constantly *reading* very minor and uninteresting donations.
That's the problem people are having because the announcer didn't seem to know when it was a proper time to have a word.
It's not like he ever asked or was told when it was a time to read the donations, he was simply going on about petty stuff which could have been filled up with a much more interesting commentary from funkdoc.
He sounds like psychedelic eyeball.
I just wished he would shut up. I watched an old Super Ghouls N Ghosts run by PJ and the announcer wasn't this annoying. PJ is funny.

An AMAZING run, and... I know the video here is old, but... sadly, I agree with everyone saying the announcer seemed to have ZERO regard for the player, the ~timing~ of when to speak and when not to... and just... did ~too~ much.
Maybe it's just me, but it should be something like:
* Announcer NEEDS to have at LEAST played the game before--maybe even finished it (whether TAS or normal, speed--who cares)
* Announcer needs SOME familiarity with the more difficult areas in the game -- so as to shaddup... ;)
* Some kind of quick, maybe "visual" check in with the player or... some middle man person to let people know to be quiet for a while
IDK. Annoyed me, since... holy SHIT is this game hard enough. Let alone with damage boosts, speed-running, and world records...! Damn.

Bluegrass really does add a certain lightness to the atmosphere and setting of these speedrun streaming events. I know this was years ago, but GDQs just wouldn't feel the same without him. He's socially awkward (sometimes to an uncomfortable degree), but he means well and is supportive of everyone, which is rad.

The newer speed run announcers are much more respectful of the players in timing their donation reads, thank god.
Holy cow is Blueglass some king of speedrun sage? Every speedrun I watch when he was spectating he knows a lot of patterns and strategies for said game! It's impressive how far his knowledge goes.

That was a gorgeous run of the game. Issues with the announcer notwithstanding, a deathless run of this game is something to be appreciated (by apparently everyone but the announcer).
this runner looks like your proverbial 80s movie nerd who turns out to be the hero at the end of the film.

The announcers on these runs normally dont bother me at all, but the announcer on this run made it practically unwatchable. He literally never shut up for more than 10 seconds during the entire course of the run.

Seconded :/ I get that they have to do donations but ugh. So much mic hogging and interrupting, so rude and unpleasant. Even goes over the final fantasy name donations which isn't even that important >.
Sarahsaurus Rawr Spikevegeta is one of the best examples of a GOOD announcer who knows when to say donations and how to give enough time for the runners...this guy on the other hand...ugh.

Can’t get over how good the sound track is.
One of the all-time great video game soundtracks, across all platforms
a) the donator jokes aren't funny, so you don't have to read them all
b) maybe down the hall the commentator marathon is going on, but in this room it's a speedrun people came for
c) if you only donated to be read, you aren't donating for a good reason.
Look, I understand that people are donating money and their generosity needs to be recognized, but the announcer just keeps opening his yap at the worst moments possible, and then he just keeps going on and on and on. It's like he's not even paying attention to the game being played at all, and he's off in his own world of hearing himself talk.
Funkdoc = Better than the japanese at this game means he is god!

The announcer is not just plain annoying and interruptive throughout the WHOLE run, but also barely understandable.
You don't have to read EVERY SINGLE donation. At least wait until the runner says it's you have time to.

Thank you to Funkdoc for this run and for inspiring me to purchase this game for my snes. I had an awesome time playing through it this past week, and and now i truly understand how skilled you are in this series. I just wish id have given it a try back in the early 90's!
yo this commentator needs to shut up donations are fine when theres down time but the dude had no time to explain any of the game. u could tell he had a bunch to say but he had to like but in to explain anything. donation comments are secondary to runner explanations. this guy doesnt understand that ppl watch the stream to see speedruns and hear the explanations about the nuances and tricks of the game not to hear donation comments

john doe Metroidvania and Classicvania/Old School Castlevania are two seperate games. Its too hard to say wich one is better than the other. It is more biased than say Castlevania vs. Castlevania 3 or Dracula X vs. Rondo. I am personally split between Aria of Sorrow and Rondo of Blood as my fav games.

Man this has to be my favorite classic style Castlevania. It's got great tunes, sweet levels and plenty of challenge. Nice run Funkdoc.

So far my favorite run. Skilled stuff here.
It's been said, and it really doesn't need to be done to death, but I seriously wanted to stomp a mudhole in the announcer. It was around the 35:08 mark that Funk was getting further and further into the last stages of the game, climbing up a set of collapsing stairs, and the announcer just kept speaking over his commentary. I was furious.

Im currently trying to speedrun this game and i learn a lot from speedrunners like Funkdoc. But I cant concentrate because of this narrator. I understand he has to state donations but not every 5 seconds. Breaks concentration from both the runner and the audience.

When I was younger this game just never seemed to end for me. I remember losing my passwords for the later levels and just completely freaking out. Good job on the time.

nice run, I played a lot back in the days. Speed run wasn't very common when I was playing it. I was more doing the game without losing life and health and knowing which candle to avoid for keeping my tripple cross

The announcer took away the awesomeness of how the nerd beat the 3rd stage boss as some other nerd in the audience had to bring attention to the fact.
I wish there were remakes of these games available for the current and next-gen (or last gen and current gen depending on your perspective) systems with maxed graphics. Imagine Mega Man 2 with Xbox 360 or PS4 graphics. How wicked that would be.

This game best shows why Slogra and Gaibon show up in the place you first talk to Death after you leave and go back to it in SotN, because like in this game, you see that Sloga and Gaibon are Death's subordinates. They're right before him in the same level, to the point where I knew he was gonna show up even though I've never even seen this game before. They're in the Cave area all over the place before you fight Death in SotN, and they're all over before you fight Death in Dawn of Sorrow. Nice consistency.
And then Harmony of Despair came out...
There is so much dead screen space, it would be nice for lower value donations to just flash or scroll down there. Of course, this channel would not be the same without these valuable fund raisers, but constant announcing really detracts from the content.
I was thinking that while watching this as well. There was so many times that Funkdoc was trying to concentrate or describe something and the announcer was reading off something. The donations are incredibly valuable, of course, but maybe handled differently.

When the announcer read the comment with "Sorry for my bad English" in it, I thought he was apologizing for his own. I can totally respect that English is not his first language and it's a tough one to learn, but I couldn't understand half of what he kept on talking about.
