    Released in 1989, Batman is one of those games that made gamers smash their controllers in frustration due to its difficulty. Loosely following the plot of the movie, Batman avenges his parents' death by hunting down the Joker. Loose was not an understatement, either: after the climactic fight atop a clock tower, Batman throws the Joker to his death. Source: speeddemosarchive.com/BatmanNE...
    At this past Awesome Games Done Quick, $1,025,000 was raised for the Prevent Cancer Foundation. It only took a week of continuous streaming, 18,000 donors, and many many runners to achieve. A big thanks to everyone responsible for these amazing numbers, what a humbling achievement. For comparison, last year's event raised just under $500,000.

    One of the best Batman games of all-time. Graphics are stellar in the 8-bit era, gameplay is responsive, and music is on par with Ninja Gaiden and Mega Man 2. Wish there were a few more levels though.

      Sunsoft honestly made some of the greatest games that most people don't think about. Obviously Blaster Master is herald as their best game on the NES along with the Batman games. But Gremlins 2 and Journey to Silius were outstanding fun games too. The graphics and the music for those games were out of this world back then... hell EVEN NOW I am still blown away over 3 decades later.
      Hard to believe Batman on NES is 35 years old now.

    What I like about NES speed runs is that they really show that games in this era were all about rhythm and timing. You can almost tap your foot to the rhythm in which this guy plays - a mark of pure understanding of the game.
    And of course, it helps to get some love from the weapon drops. Good stuff. It makes me want to play my old games again.

    Your complete mastery of this game is commendable! You taught me a few things like how to get past two of the four gear sets in the later part of stage 2 without taking damage. The other 2 I figured out you could fall right down and grapple, but those other 2 you have to grapple so LOW! Timing is so key in this game. I eventually figured out on my own you were invincible while damaging other enemies so long as you strike them first as you invade their space. Never knew of the first boss glitch. The way you handled all of the bosses was boss, and never figured out those exact methods. Haha, I knew about those shortcuts on stage 2 where you can grapple up to the next level.
    On the console, I usually got stuck on the squares boss. But one time I got up to the 5th stage, but never could do the vertical climb before the final fights. Never figured out how to get past those gears without taking damage. Now that I have the game on emulator I have been able to beat the game through the miracle of moderate state save abuse (I only allow myself to save at the beginning of the zones in each level). This was still a tough game! I eventually learned how to replenish my health slowly by killing the metal bombs those ceiling bubbles drop. I bet the programmers put these "grind for health" points in purposely. Another place is right before the 2nd boss you can replenish weapons and health by making those 2 needle machines and 2 runners respawn.
    Still a very tough game (though you make it look easy, as all you SDAers do), but at least they start you at the beginning of the level you were on, you just have to start at zone 1 of that level which is pretty fair. Still, it takes so much time to figure out how to beat certain parts of levels and bosses that you fail the first five or ten times before you figure it out (this is where state save quickens your learning curve). Then to the next roadblock where you fail five or ten times. Progress is slow. Such were the nature of many NES games.
    You guys are one of my favorite channels on UA-cam. I grew up with these games. I stuck with NES and SNES while my friends graduated to whatever was the newest system. It is really good to see there is still interest in these old games. They require more mind power. And you actually feel accomplished when you figure out the "puzzle" of the game. Like a puzzle the programmers put out for others to figure out. An interesting interactive form of art I have always loved. I love figuring out systems which is why I like video games as well. Well, you guys absolutely 100% figure them out! Usually when I finish a game I come to see the SDA speedrun.
    Nowadays video games are more about showy graphics, but there are some great modern ones as well the few I've seen and played.
    You can tell the unabashed passion I have for these old NES and SNES games. I have no problem letting my nerd show.

    i remember chucking tantrums when i was a 5 year old until the old man got me this game and waking up one morning with it next to my face lol, one of the best days of my life as i was totally sick of TMNT
    This was one game i always went back to, ALWAYS, the few times i got up to the final boss i died, it was excruciating! Grew up a gamer, and always will be a gamer though I can't play them as much now of course. Watching this made me realise how few levels there were and i am almost ashamed that I could never beat it until years later (highschool) on PC with an emulator and savestate, same goes for TMNT lol

    Having played these on the NES at release I am stunned by how masterful you guys are @ these. I wonder, though how many of them train on a real NES or whatever system and DON'T train on emulators? Not that emulators aren't cool, but is it easier to plan/practice speed runs on them with save states? Genuine question here, not being facetious, and that's not saying it takes anything away from the runs, just a question. Great run DXTR absolutely stunning man!

    • @Likuzaim
      @Likuzaim 9 років тому +1

      Save states do make it easier, and in some cases slowing the speed of the game can help someone practice frame timing and get certain aspects down. Also, save states help with sections or moments. Say a boss gives you trouble, like Cosmo's Castlevania 64 run. The vampires from the coffins at the end of the..garden...? gave him soooo much trouble at first. He spent hours on a emulator, with a save state right at the start of the fight to practice that boss fight.

    • @googleplussvcksballs
      @googleplussvcksballs 9 років тому

      Likuzaim
      Precisely. As opposed to taking mins/hours to get somewhere and spending only seconds doing the activity. You can rack up hours practicing one jump with an emulator that would take days/weeks/MONTHS on a standard console...

    • @johns832
      @johns832 9 років тому

      If I remember correctly, emulators are fine for practice. But, for a record to count it has to be on an actual legit system.

    • @Travesty7007
      @Travesty7007 9 років тому

      I don't see anything wrong with an emulator, as long as they're not using any kind of Game Genie like cheats. But I will say, if you guys can find the ROM-hack of this game with the black costume like the movie, it's really cool. The game is exactly the same in every respect, except for the updated costume.

    • @johns832
      @johns832 9 років тому

      Travesty. I am by no means an expert. But, if I recall correctly, the community made this decision to not allow emulators to help legitimize runs easier. Emulators are generally more competent than older systems. Therefore, they can load screens faster, lag less, or even run at higher frames per second. All these can alter times by sometimes great lengths. I have picked up all of this from just the commentary from these types of videos, so I maybe be incorrect.
