Would it be easier for you to cast consistent weight bars if you weighted out the raw material before you melted it & just had the exact amount in the crucible before you heated it?
Great channel and video. I’m in the Marine Corps and I don’t get paid very much but I would still like to start getting into investing in silver. Your videos have helped and have given me insight. Do you have any silver samples for sale that I could purchase to help get me started? That’d be great if you did!
I am curious, you mention that you can't just melt 31.1 grams in a crucible and pour it because it leaves graphite pollution, how come eyeballing the silver instead of pre weighing it out avoids the problem? I don't understand. Also, if I use a ceramic dish crucible instead of a graphite one and put pre weighed out shot in it that should avoid that problem correct? Thanks!
Great questions - happy to explain. The graphite is lighter than the silver so comes out with the last parts of the silver as it is poured from the crucible. The first 90% of the pour is clean - it is just the last 10 % that has the graphite. We could indeed use a ceramic dish crucible and use this method but it is a very labour intensive one and also one that we are not very familiar with. I like the way we do it and it yields some lovely looking bars and hey, some free silver for people too!
These are all sold as it's an old video but we have got some 100g bars on our website, www.backyardbullion.com and we ship worldwide! You can checkout there!
Yes, but as I explained in the video the quality of the bar will not look nice. Often you get graphite come out as well as the silver and the simple act of dumping everything out yields a very different looking (and not so nice) bar. It's why we make them the way we do, so they look really nice.
I could possibly, I have thought about taking some of the better looking bars and stamping them up - just up against a time deadline at the moment and want to power through to make the full 200 bars
Yes indeed we can - but you then get all the horrible graphite coming out the crucible. By doing it the way I do it allows a nice clean and attractive pour to come out the other end.
lulu0462 I bought brand name sterling table ware and refined it to 99.99+. All the sterling was bought below silver spot. Dissolved it in nitric acid. Dropped out the AG using pure copper. And lastly used electrolysis to get 99.99+.
Do you need a licence to make silver bullions? If so I’ll get one and add it to my collections of licences with include a fishing, sneezing and I also have a licence to cough. Just waiting for them to make a licence to breathe so I can get that as well.
You don't need a licence to make it - you need to have it hallmarked and assay tested if you want to sell it and call it silver. That is the law here in the UK.
Backyard Bullion ok thanks mate. I’m from Australia and yes I’m sure the rules will be fairly similar here. Guess I’ll have to do that process if I plan to sell what I make. I like your ripple effect. Try doing it with cooper and other metals or does it only work with silver?
Hi Diana, sorry someone snapped that one up very quickly already. Usually £25 would be about $35 and then maybe $ for shipping. If you wanted to buy 4 or more then it would be free shipping to the USA. You can buy them directly via my website here: backyardbullion.com/product/pre-order-2018-silver-forum-bar-1oz-hallmarked-hand-poured-silver/ Or you can get in touch directly (email me on byb@backyardbullion.com) and we can sort out a price without PayPal Fees included.
Best place for you to look is my website - there are multi item listings for all of the sizes/shapes we currently can make. We cannot do 1gram bars but 1/2 oz is about as small as I go. backyardbullion.com/product-category/hand-poured-silver-made-to-order/
funny how the people overseas are so scared of their government they will not stamp things. one thing I am glade of wear I live is I do not have to worry about this. and places that do a lot of stamping actuley own a computer for testing and print the report selling it with the item.
Well, you can drop me an email to byb@backyardbullion.com and we can talk about selling to the USA. 1000 Oz is a lot and will be quite heavy and valuable to ship, but I do ship to the USA all the time so certainly possible. Drop me an email and we can look to arrange something
Maybe you can help me with a problem I am having. When I see everyone pouring bars their bars look amazing. Last night i was playing with my new to me kiln and just attempting to pour a little 1 ounce bar in 925 my bars just look like trash, worse by far than any of your rejects. Im using a small amount of flux, im getting it nice and hot, im warming my graphite mold, im pouring fast but not crazy fast. What am I screwing up? is my silver too cold? not pouring fast enough? It just seems like it gets into the mold and just instantly cools into these ugly unamalgimated blobs. Help?
@@BackyardBullion Thank you so much. These were just practice bars. Im planning to refine them and other silver anyway so whenever I get my silver cell put together ill turn them into .999 Makes sense though. Thank you very much
@@BackyardBullion that would be due mostly to copper content correct? I ended up getting some better pours using the map gas method but one of them has a copper color on the top. Im thinking I heated it up so much that some of the copper separated out? Short of refining with a silver cell is there a less work involved way to get it to 999? pretty much thats it isnt it? Ive messed around with smelting a little in the past but it was typically with aluminum....which is easy by comparison.
Why don't you put a tray on the scale and tare it to 0; then you can premeasure your 31.1 min grams of shot instead of the trial and error method you appear to be suing?
I love watching the process of making poured silver creations. So much talent and creativity in this community
It is a very talented community for sure. Thanks for stopping by

I just bought everything I need to start pouring! I'll record and post my first attempt.
How did it come out?

Thanks very much for the feedback - one day I will try to expand out to the big dealers but it is hard to even.get noticed.

Yes they are so beautiful! 😍💙
Love the process and just seeing the bar come to life from start to nearly finish 👍
Best finish - this is the thing that frustrates me sometimes as I want to get them all done right away!
Awesome!!! What an amount of work - in every pour! Thanks big lad!

thank you for this video, it was very edifying. looking forward to trying my hand at pouring one day now!
Can you weight the quantities of silver before melting so you can control the result or its hard, very good job...
What dimensions is the mold in mm's to make 1oz Bar in silver please.
How can I purchase some of your poured silver bars? I think that you are doing an wonderful job

Hi BYB! Is that one still available? It would go very nicely with the bars that I have already ordered. 😍
Unfortunately this #111 has been sold already, got snapped up within the first 30 minutes
Backyard Bullion That's what I figured, but I thought it was worth asking. Great video! I'm looking forward to receiving my bars. 😊
Do you mind me asking where on earth you can find someone to make custom metal stamps like this? It seems to be very difficult overseas.
Question, where do you get your punches from?
Thank you, awesome video...

If you weight your silver beads first than every bar will be the correct weight

You should look into a more sensitive scale that goes into the thousands on the decimal place.
Just no need for a set of scales that accurate. The two decimal place ones are just fine.
Where do you buy your silver shot? Love your videos btw. These are awesome and make me want to try pouring my own silver.
I actually really like some of those reject bars, you could sell some? Like when you sold the tombstone error bar.
I could possibly, I have thought about taking some of the better looking bars and stamping them up - just up against a time deadline at the moment and want to power through to make the full 200 bars
I like ugly bars. I always buy the ugliest bars at the bullion shop.
Super interesting video mate 👍 would buying silver shot be a way to stack silver but not necessarily melt it down ,just keep it for weight ?
You could do - but it would not be capital gains exempt like the Britannia and selling it on would be difficult in bulk
Hi is it still possible to buy these bars ?
Mmmmm! Silver banana bread.
This was a fun video!
Also, where can you get those custom stamps?

£100 or so for them

I had the stamp made for me by an engineering company

wow very nice
Why not weigh exactly 31.103 then melt it and pour so it doesn't go over in weight.
Because you will end up with a very ugly bar with no ripples and a lot of nasty graphite

Re watching this, i realise it would be cool if you sold “wonky bars” as some silver pieces with a lower premium (maybe even unhallmarked)
I would rather have the best looking products possible to be honest.

No worries, glad to help. It is the fact that 925 silver oxidises a lot quicker so it's cooling rate is vastly increased
