How to make a gold bar (and silver bar too!)

  • Wonder how to make a gold bar? In this video I cast gold and silver bars. Melting gold is done in the KK8 kiln (Kwik Kiln 8"). I use a combination of placer gold, hard rock gold, and old sterling silver to make a very large silver bar and a bunch of smaller gold bars. I do smelt some of the hard rock gold to purify the gold some as the hard rock gold still had some impurities in it. After I cast the gold bars, I then calculate the value of the gold. The one ounce gold bar is worth about $1780 Canadian. It was a whole lot of fun making gold bars and they look great as well.
This video is produced by Dan Hurd, Prospector, Miner, Teacher and UA-camr, as part of his UA-cam channel based on educational videos about gold mining, gold panning, prospecting, rock hounding, and mineral collecting.

A couple quick tips, you don't need to add that much Flux when you're doing a melt. You shouldn't have to break Flux off of it. Also, you should almost immediately quench the metals when they solidify. Give it 20 or so seconds to harden and throw it in some water! It strengthens the metal a ton! Great video!!

A couple of days ago you smelted some into a bar. What purity do you get? ( actually this video )
What's the cost to register a claim?
Is it OK to pan anywhere as long as not on some ones claim?
I'm in Ontario and would like to drive out to the west coast and to Alaska and pan just for fun.
How much is the ferry ride at Lytton and when does it run? I take it's powered by the current, point the bow upstream and away she goes.

I think in europe you are guaranteeed a certain value in any national crisis. So people here creates several accounts in more then one bank if they exceed that ammount in savings. And same thing goes for bank safety depost boxes. So in europe I would just document it and store it in several bank deposits to be on the safe side. To have gold at home and be known/famous for it is asking for trouble.

Great video Dan, I love melting gold. I stack firebrick as a kiln on top of a blacksmith forge, it works pretty well for small pours. I usually do 10 grams at a time but find it freezes pretty fast and doesn't make a nicely shaped bar at times.
