A 4K step-by-step how-to video on how to measure your valve clearances and replace shims on a Triumph Bonneville 2012 SE. This maintenance is easy as long as you are careful to replace bolts where they came from and to cover up engine holes so that no parts fall into the engine.

This video is one of the best ive seen. I followed the procedures to the T, used the supplied excel calculator, replaced the shims and now she's running like new again. Thanks Chris!!!
Fantastic guide. I'll be doing the valve check on my Thruxton for the first time myself and this video has given me the confidence that I can do the adjustments if necessary.
Thanks for this very help full tutorial 👍, I did this maintenance yesterday and everything went without any trouble. The excel shim calculator file was great as well.
Good job
Thank you for the great quality instructional video
Great video! Straight to the point without all the extra babble that most seem to have!
Well made video, concise, to the point, accurate and very helpful. Many thanks.
Thank you for being clear and concise. I’ll be referring to this video a few more times before I dive into my project.
Thank you. This was very helpful. I will be doing this inside my garage thanks to you. Excellent video. Thank you. 🤙👍
Nice man! Excellent video with all the pertinent details! Thank you good sir!
Excellent video. Thanks for being on point and concise.
Wow killer video dude! Great work!
Nice video, best I've seen on the subject!
Great video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Great video! Learned a lot!
awesome video! excel spread sheet is gold
Excellent video.
Love you man! That's it, life saver!
Super well done! Great job and thank you. What year Bonneville is that? I’m getting ready to do this to my ‘01and I’m wondering if those clearance values are the same as the ‘01…
Good video, thanks
Very helpful. Thank you.
Can a zip tie be used instead of the bolt you ground down?
Thanks for the video!
very helpfull thanks
Hey Chris, nice video, very informative and it gets a thumbs up from me. Can I ask what year Binnie this is? It's a beautiful machine!
Thank you for this Video!! Now i know i have to go with my Thruxton 1200 2019 to the Workshop. I cant do this at home :-)
when would a timing chain replacement be needed?
Awesome
I would like to ask what is the tightening torque of the camshaft holder bolts?
Is the new t120 valve check and shim replacement the same?
How many miles did this bike have on it
Well produced but you lost me at ”remove the camshaft” 😅 Think I will support my local workshop instead...
Its worth the first part and just check! If all is good, no need to send it to a workshop😊
How did you line the backlash gear back up mine shifted slightly on removal like yours did
Mine just moved half a cog. What did you do?
Man great tutorial but there is one thing you've made wrong!! ATTENTION. When you replace the washers of the valve cover, you put them upside down. THE COPPER PART HAS TO BE FACING UP!! This make sense taking into account that above it there is a screw.
Hi Chris. The spreadsheet app is saying I can view only. I sent a request to be able to edit. Is there anything I'm doing wrong to not be able to edit or add my own data?
Hi - you can click File -> make a copy for your own editable version.
legit
I WATCH YOUR VIDEOS FROM MEXICO CITY, SOME DO HAVE SUBTITLES OTHERS DO NOT, I WOULD LIKE THIS COULD YOU PUT SUBTITLES BECAUSE MY ENGLISH IS NOT VERY GOOD AND I AM SOON TO DO THE VALVE ADJUSTMENT ON MY TRIUMPH SCRAMBLER 865 CC AIR-COOLED
GREETINGS AND THANKS FOR THE GUIDE
How do I get access to shim size calculator (spreadsheet) thanks.

@@ChrisIronhardt Thank you.
Great video,I dread shim valve adjustments. My question, and it might be incredibly stupid, why is this called a SOHC,there are two cams, right? What am i missing?
It's a DOHC, since like you said there are 2 cams.
Ok,I have a 2023 street twin 900,it is a sohc according to the literature. Is that an air cooled bonneville you are working on? Does my bike have rocker arm activation? This is my first non Japanese motorcycle
And thanks by the way
@@garydavis2265 it looks like you are right. The engine in your bike is a SOHC. My understanding of the Street Twin was to be an more inexpensive bike than the Bonneville.
After doing a little research it appears that all 2016 and on bonnevilles are sohc
Ha, this is an IKEA Hammer!
There is no gasket to replace on the valve cover? Or is there any?
You can replace the gasket on the valve cover. I just reused my old one because it was in good shape. I have not had any leak issues since doing this maintenance 18 months ago
Crikey, this is why i hate shim and bucket style valve actuation. I may need to adjust the rocker arms on my bike more often (though that hasn't proven true yet) but it takes all of ten minutes and two tools.
Believe it or not, this is why I will never own another Triumph. Screw type valve adjusters are just so much easier to deal with.
Why can't you just buy new factory shims? Why do you need to get special ones with different thicknesses? I have 24,000 miles on mine and never checked them yet.
The factory shims are not one thickness across the board. Manufacturing tolerances make it necessary to use an array of thicknesses for the shims to get the clearances correct. With miles on the engine, you must now factor in wear. The only way to get them right is through the measuring and calculating process. My bike is at 15K miles and it appears that the valve adjustment was never done. I will require four new shims on my adjustment. It really isn't hard to do.
@@StRYCH9ofFOCR Thanks for the info. My bike is running fine. Maybe I'll do the work this off season.
Reason i don't buy Triumph...Massive drama of taking cam shafts out / verify timing just to adjust valves. lol no thanks.Give me a screw tappet or hydraulic lifter anyday.
